One that has drawn my eye several times is Maria's Market, which has a huge sign painted on the side of the building. As a former employee of Costco, I knew the Maria's brand of salsa and guacamole, so I was happy to find that the source of that delicious stuff is just a few blocks from my new home! (They make and distribute from this location on Home Avenue, and the little market has all kinds of Maria's products, plus every other Hispanic food you might be craving on hand.) Because I am married to an authentic Messican man (and I am just a boring white southern girl without any Latina flava), I am always looking to make my man some almost-as-good-as-mama's comida, but in the gringa-easy-way if possible. Cook pazole, albondigas or menudo all day? Ummm, not likely. Spend hours in the kitchen making tamales? Not while I am working full time and cherishing my weekends! However, grilling up fresh carne asada, making real guacamole and serving him mango juice and cactus from a bottle? Now those things I can do! The meat counter at Maria's is amazing (two pounds of REAL bacon for less than $3, a whole chicken breast for less than $3.50!) and the butcher was very friendly, even smiling and replying to my mangled Spanish. They have tons of produce for CHEAP (25 cents for a huge bundle of green onions, 39 cents for a head of iceberg lettuce, 50 cents each for small avocados!) and a huge variety of queso fresco, fresh tortillas and canned sauces for gringas like me to cheat on enchiladas and soups. Maria's Market is just about as authentic as it gets north of the border for a small grocery store, and in my blue eyes, that makes for my new favorite little mercado.

I read the reviews about the wait, which to us, didn't matter. As an Afghan, I know the hard work and time that goes into to making the cuisine. Everything was made to order with fresh ingredients. The woman working was very kind and attentive. We were short a few breads for purchase, which she immediately made us the amount we needed. They make their own bread and baklava (they're pretty good!) and also have a meat section with halal/non-halal meats. The staff here has always been friendly and greet me with a smile when I walk in.
