A few weeks back I was hanging out with an old friend and as we started discussing lunch, poke came to mind. It sounded good but we also weren't really feeling like going "out" and something that could be delivered or that we could pick up seemed like the better play. All the typical poke places showed up when we searched but none of them really sold us. Well, good thing I remembered that Valley Farm's poke game is strong... really strong. Believe me, I know that those of you who don't know Valley Farm will likely say "really?" when I detail that this sleepy little Spring Valley market kicks out poke as good as anywhere else in SD, but it's true. It's a sleeper of a choice but the quality and price will make you a fan, trust me. read more

It just tasted like salmon coated in some kind of sesame oil. I still ate it with snacking seaweed but I would not buy again. -Hatch chile Caesar wrap, I liked that the wrap was soft and not soggy. Chicken was grilled and diced, lettuce was crunchy and hatch chile tasted grilled and notably cold, came with Caesar dressing on the side. There was nothing wrong with the ingredients but together it just made a very underwhelming wrap, I didn't really taste any flavor from the wrap even with the help of the dressing. I also would not buy again. Ambiance 5/5 -They had a lot of ready-to-eat food options, both hot and cold. Valley Farms Market is one of San Diego's hidden gems. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the difference. The store is clean, beautifully organized, and filled with high-quality products you don't always find at larger chain grocery stores. Came here shopping for prime rib for Christmas and walked out with almost my entire shopping list the butcher section is BEAUTIFUL! Service is prompt and you get the perfect cuts fresh and right in front of you. They also have a section of game meat in a separate freezer where we got bison meat to make food for my cats! Win win! The staff is friendly, the store while not huge is properly stocked with a little bit of everything you need! They also carry Julian's famous apple pies! Parking is huge and the store is conveniently located just a minute away from the freeway for easy access. Will definitely come back for more meat cuts for special occasions! read more

This year I ordered a half smoked turkey from Valley Farm market. The Spring Valley location is well stocked and always clean. The workers are always very very customer service oriented and I appreciate that as a returning customer. When I arrived, there were several other people waiting for their orders for pick up. I love that they had a process where you check in at a table give them your information and then they let you know that they see your order and that it will be out shortly. I only waited about 7 to 8 minutes and my order was ready. I pre-ordered online a couple of days before Thanksgiving, which was very convenient. When I picked up my order, I asked the young lady if there was cornbread mix, and they absolutely did have some. Everything that they have at the store is top-notch, stocked well, and current. What I did notice is that they have premade enchiladas and other yummy food in the refrigerated section to the right of the deli. I did not know this before, but I sure will be coming back to try some of those items. My checkout process was seamless. I went to the front but my cornbread paid for my turkey and everything was done within 15 minutes total. Thank you, Valley Farm Market Spring Valley/La Mesa for saving our Thanksgiving! I've been here once. Who doesn't love a clean grocery store and butcher.?! I can say it was really nice to visit. They have amazing meats (they're not cheap). The coffee shop "the shack" has good coffee which is why I gave it so many opportunities. The service from these girls is always passive aggressive and not pleasant. After today, I will not be returning as they only filled my coffee HALF WAY. When I brought it to their attention they refused to do anything about it and said that's how it comes. I've ordered it multiple times before and know that not "how it comes". Will not be returning. read more

Great store to buy your meats. Fresh cuts, the butchers are very friendly and cut meats to any size you want. Definitely recommend for steaks and carne asada. For me it's a 20 minute drive but it's worth it. The store has plenty of parking. It's on the corner of Bancroft and Campbell Road. Can't say I do my typical grocery shopping here, even though it's super close for me but l'm almost religiously here every weekend to pick up a John Wayne Prime Steak and REAL bacon for breakfast. Their salsas are also super good. Meat department staff is always super friendly and helpful, informative, and so is the rest of the store personnel.. car meet-ups take place in the parking lot every weekend. Located in the parking lot of Valley Farm Market is The Shack which serves breakfast, lunch, and a variety of drinks.  I was here for the bbq.  I ordered a rack of ribs with fries.  Fries were crispy and seasoned.  Flavor was good.  Ribs were tender and juicy.  They were cooked just enough where the ribs were not bloody.  I liked the light smoky flavor and I loved the dry rub which had a bit of sweetness from the brown sugar. I like going to Valley Farm for unique goods and their abundance of healthy and locally made snacks/meals. I've stopped by here when I needed a quick meal for work or items that pertained to my diet. I haven't tried it, but they are offering poke and other specialty meats in the back of the market. I do have to take a star off as I bought a pack of breakfast bars that were due to expire back in November and some spicy salt and vingar chips that lacked any seasoning (not the market's fault though), otherwise, I still would prefer to go to Valley Farm market over other grocery stores. read more

This cute little neighborhood market is nowhere close to where I live, but for certain things, I make the drive to come here! I'm in the area on the weekends, but this is not exactly on the way. It's hard to find time during the week to cook and here, there are so many tasty options ready to just throw on the stove, grill or in the oven! My faves are the Huli huli chicken, Aloha beef and Maui ribs! Pricing is pretty good considering everything is already pre-marinated. That's less work for me! They also have grab and go hot single serving protons of food available as well. One of my favorite items to pick up is the fresh ahi poke! I had their bbq long ago and can't wait to try the bbq again! This is more a specialty store. Not really a one stop shop for me. You may not find everything that you would in a large chain grocery store here. But if you're looking for something specific in terms of bbq, you'll find it here! They also sell Julian pies! This review is strictly for "The Shack" located in the parking lot of Valley Farm Market. I'm a long time Spring Valley resident and grew up going to Valley Farm with my dad. They always have great products and I love their butcher/meat counter. It's truly the best in San Diego hands down. However, this review is for The Shack Kitchen and coffee. Let's back up a little......Valley Farm opened a restaurant in Mt Laguna called The Outpost. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you on Sat and Sunday up there, they have the best BBQ in Southern California. Amazing Ribs, pull pork, burgers etc....well worth the drive. So, NEEDLESS to say I was ECSTATIC to see The Shack had a very similar menu as the Outpost, if not the same. So, today (01/7/24) I stopped by for lunch and ordered a full rack of ribs and two sides. (Green chili Mac and cheese and potato salad) I also ordered a Cali burrito with no creama and no pico. Lastly I ordered a Birria bowl....that definitely was not Birria. I'll apologize in advance, because I only took a picture of the ribs and not the other two items. So here comes the review....DO NOT EAT AT THE SHACK. Either go to Mt. Laguna and eat at The Outpost, or venture into La Mesa or Rancho and eat somewhere else. As bad as I really hate to say it, the ribs I got today from The Shack were tough, chewy, had zero dry rub on them, zero smoke ring and were under cooked. (See photo comparison below) The green chili Mac and cheese was cold, rubbery, and bland. The potato salad looked and tasted like Reser's Red Skinned Potato Salad, that they just transferred over to a plastic container and passed it off as their own. To add insult to injury, the California burrito had everything in it that I didn't ask for. Minimal amount of meat and was all potatoes. The Birria bowl should have been called the pot roast bowl because that's pretty much what it was. It was just frustrating and disappointing all the way around from The Shack. I'll continue to shop at Valley Farm, and I'll absolutely still eat at the Outpost. But $73.00 at The Shack was an absolute waste of money. read more

First time here and I was wandering the aisles checking out all the products they have. Unfortunately, there was a lot of noise happening back in the meat section. The machine they were using didn't sound like it was operating right. I was going to get some meat but couldn't stand the noise. I did pick up a nice loaf of sourdough bread and few other items. The cashier took forever to ring up two people ahead of me. I almost walked out. Overall, my shopping experience was subpar. Didn't care for the parking lot either. read more

This market was super surprising to walk into. Our Yelp Elite friends S & M had suggested we try this place out for our food get-together (we go to a different spot every time to try out things). The selection was very versatile. There were a lot of options - vegan for snacks, vegan for drinks, food choices etc. In the front were freshly made hot food options - smoked bbq ribs, tri-tip, smoked chicken, mac and cheese, tri tip mac and cheese, bacon mac and cheese, and breakfast sandwiches as wel. I was also very surprised to walk among the aisles and find a section fully for smoking, a shelf full of Yeti products, a shelf full of cutting boards sporting the Valley Farm Market logo. In the deli area, they had fresh made poke as well! Along with marinated meats and sandwiches/salads. They definitely just had something for every body. Some of the prices did remind me of being in a Whole Foods Market, but the products were of superior quality and this market is a specialty one as well! Very clean area and nicely lit. My favorite from the hot food options was the smoked chicken. My husband enjoyed the smoked bbq ribs. I would hope we would be able to stop in here again as I'm looking forward to collecting possibly their cutting boards/smoke items once we get our own place, to add to our own backyard grill area. read more

On-line price for lobster tails was listed at $14.99 per pound. When I got to the store I ordered four tails ranging from 5 to 6 ounces each. When they rang-up my order they priced the tails at $14.99 each instead of per pound. Needless to say I cancelled my order at that inflated price. read more

The Shack is back at the Valley Farm Market in Spring Valley. Woot woot! We came here the morning of 1.15.24 for some to go breakfast to enjoy back at home. The menu is nicely laid out with great descriptions and extensive offerings. We ordered the Chilaquiles and the Elote Toast. The Chilaquiles comes with green sauce, tortilla chips, queso fresco, pickled onion, sour cream and choice of eggs (scrambled for us). The Elote Toast has fresh mashed avocado, Valley Farm Market elote dip, micro cilantro, cotija cheese and lime. The Chilaquiles plate was exactly what I was looking for. It had the right amount of crunch to sauce ratio on the chips, the cheese was fresh and crumbly, flavorful sauce, fresh bright orange scrambled egg and the pop of color with the pickled onion and cilantro. The Elote Toast had so much flavor! One of those dishes that keeps you looking and analyzing it intently after each bite because you cant believe how much flavor is in it. The woman at the counter helping us was friendly, informative and patient. She ends up being the person to prepare our food as well. I wish I got her name. There are plenty of clean tables under a pergola for dining at the location. If were eating on the run, it's a comfy spot for a bite. (for The Shack- a bit of feedback for the packaging on the Chilaquiles, is a piece of foil or parchment in the clamshell so that chips/sauce don't sog through the container. But not a deal breaker). So glad we choose this for today, it just set the tone for the day. We are looking forward to your other offerings and BBQ as I am an avid meat smoker myself. The food that we got was really good. I tried their chicken salad wraps (white ppl put fruit in weird places) but it was actually good , it had chopped apples, onions, celery and grapes. I think if they would've added some shredded cheese it would've sent it over the top. We also got the pasta and chicken Parm and some fruit. That was amazing as well and the juices man, just be prepared to drink them all in the same day. They are that good! The service here is top notch, everyone speaks to you and acknowledge you as a person. The ambiance is chill and slow paced, just right for a great shopping experience. Now, to the bank buster, the butcher section is not for the faint of heart. You have to go there with a plan . I spent $250.00 easily, everything looked good. Everyone knows the meat is amazing here. But I recently went there to grab their chips and a couple different dips. The elite dip and their salsas are really good. Anyway, I grab the chips and dips and I get a message from the wife. "See if they have heirloom tomatoes and grab a Blanco tequila for drinks tonight" So two amazing things happened. They had heirlooms which are hard to find right now. And I discovered they have an amazing tequila selection! They blow Bevmo out of the water. I only needed a cheap blanco for mixed drinks but they had three different choices of Arette including Gran Classe(amazing) and a few options of La Gritona and other really nice tequilas. They had Lalo too which is popular right now but for people new to tequila. If you're into good tequila and you don't want to drive all the way to the great shop in Old Town you need to check these guys out! read more

What a fun little market!!! They have EVERYTHING!!! This is not your run of the mill grocery or sundry store!! So many unique items, I was on treasure hunting overload!! They have these little single serve cocktails; twist the container and the alcohol is combined with the mixer in the attached compartment to make an adult beverage on the go! Magic!! My favorite purchase was the fresh skinned and boneless chicken thighs from butcher counter and the premade curry stew mix in the jar. OMGGG!! Delicious! Dinner was done instantly and it was definitely restaurant quality!! I feel badly to deduct 1 star for the pricing as they are a family business, however I spent $150 on one bag of groceries. The meat department is top tier. I grab the thin sliced top round and different marinated chickens. That is the highlight of this place. Customer service here all around is a bit rough. Some of the oldest employees won't greet or be polite despite me shopping here for 15 years. Morning cashier won't even bag your groceries or maybe she just won't bag mine? The wine selection here is excellent but the produce department needs help. I've been coming here for years for the outstanding poke. I normally do a 1/2 lb mix of the spicy and classic poke. A bag of chips and some beverages and you've got a nice little lunch or snack. I gravitated next to their barbecue, naturally because of the BBQ shack out front. Today we came here for the burger. The ambiance is perfect right on Campo road perfect place to stop for a bite. The service was quick and the burger came out when it should have. (Remember:good things take time to cook and prepare.) Their smash burger is worth the visit. We were having a burger challenge and had to return and put it up to the test. It does not disappoint. The fries remind me of seasoned Rally fries and are cared for even more and delicious. Absolutely crazy the prices they charge at the meat counter (hence knocking off 2 stars). Unfortunately, I do not ever see myself going back. I purchased a porkbutt that came out to $67, 14lb Brisket for $150, and 2lbs Maui Short Ribs. My jaw dropped when I put the packaged meat in my shopping cart. Valley Farm Market is the Erewhon of San Diego. The in house meats and premade meals are absolutely delicious. Since the market is close to my home, I prioritize their meals for those weeks that I just can't manage enough time to meal prep. Their elote dip is THE BEST. The market has a lot of items you won't typically find in your name brand grocery store and they always have quality produce. The downfall of this store is some of the pricing is absolutely absurd. I understand that this is a family owned store but as a note to the owners - no one will be keeping them in business selling grocery brand items at a 150% mark up. For example, at the time of this review, a bag of Tillamook shredded cheese was $18. It's only $5 at the corporate store. People want to support small businesses but those prices don't meet the demand when I can drive a mile down the road and get those items for significantly cheaper. Now, with that being said, I will always pay the price to support local farms. I have no problem spending $13 on a dozen eggs when it's coming from a San Diego farm. Same with $3 for a bell pepper (which honestly I still don't really want to do but it's not that much more expensive than the regular grocery store). I would hope the owners recognize that their profit margins would likely be a lot better if their markup was only slightly above the corporate competition. These prices don't prevent me from going but they do contribute to the fact that Valley Farm Market is not my primary grocery store. I hope that one day it may be but they need their pricing strategy to make sense in comparison to the competition. Supporting small does not mean taking advantage of the community. read more

We recently ordered our Thanksgiving roasted turkey for our family meal here and let me tell you, it was so, so good! The turkey was juicy and flavorful! Price was really reasonable too! When I was a younger kid this was the store that my grandmother would go and get groceries and had the lowest prices on the many products that you would find in other places . The Valley Farm Market is one location that had the great family atmosphere of the welcomes coming through the front door. Visiting the Valley Farm you see the best in the meat departments and the service you can find that old style market that is there to help with getting the things you need. The best in meat cuts and the beef you would see on the scale and the color of the beef and hamburger. The walks up and down the isles you could many of the products like you could find in the many markets in many states small town stores. The great service at the front cashier stands the friendliest always asking if they could help with bags to the car. Valley Farm Market is one place that has the old fashioned ways of advertising food specials and the produce that is on sale. You could always see the drink prices for the sodas they have in big painted butcher paper sign . We love Valley Farm! They have the best meat/seafood counter and prepared food. Some of my favorites at the poke (duh) and chicken salad with their fresh tortilla chips. The carne asada and huli huli chicken is also great. I mean there is so much to list. I love when they have the Carlsbad strawberries- so good. They have local vendors, which is also something I love. You can browse and always find something good. Pro tip: they have specials on Tuesdays and Wednesday and funny videos on IG to announce them.
