So delicious. Detroit style and regular round crusts both were perfectly cooked. The first legit spinach pizza I've had in Detroit--not skimpy with the seasoned, cooked spinach. cross-cultural flavors chicken tandoori and nag keep it interesting. (The nag was a tiny bit spicy for me, but I am a major wimp.) Gyro sauce (tzaziki) was also a hit. Went to Detroit over a long weekend and out of all the delicious meals we got to try during our stay, the humble Amar Pizza was the most memorable. Literally just thinking about the pizza we ate gets my salivary glands working furiously. We ordered a Half Tandoori half Philly cheesesteak pizza with a side of ghost sauce. This is definitely a takeout location but we sat at one of the 2 tables inside to eat. The pizza was so good!!! South Asian ingredients on a pizza was executed perfectly. The ghost sauce was delicious and I truly wish I could have a side of it with all future pizza slices I ever eat. Even the Philly cheesesteak pizza tasted better with ghost sauce on top. Not really all that spicy in my opinion but maybe an entire ghost pizza would be harder to handle... I'll have to find out next time I'm in Detroit. read more

Some restaurants use more cheese than others, while some try to flare their pizza with fresh herbs and larger leaves of basil, etc. There are other places that just offer the ordinary pizza and you wouldn't be able to tell from one pepperoni pizza to the next. Not Amar Pizza. You can get all the traditional pizza you want, but what you won't find at other places is the adventurous and flavorful experience with a Bangladesh spin. This pizza place was one of the stops on our Bizarre Foods culinary tour of Detroit to follow in Andrew Zimmern's shoes. DO NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE WITHOUT TRYING THEIR DRIED FISH PIZZA! I wrote that in caps for a reason, seriously you have to try it. It was by far one of the best pizzas I have ever tried. Its unique, delicious, and packs a kick of heat. It is made with dried shrimp, roasted garlic, onions, cilantro, spicy fish paste containing ghost peppers. It does have a small fish flavor, but its minor. The fish is dried and then mashed together, then spread on the pizza. So when it cooks, it becomes dehydrated and becomes this wonderfully crunchy topping. When you combine the fish along with the garlic and shrimp paste, it makes a harmony of flavors. Be careful though, if you don't like spicy food, you may want to stay away from this one. A small amount of ghost pepper is used so it has a kick. It doesn't hit you at first but when the heat arrives slowly, oh you know it. We did ask the owner how they came up with this pizza and it was fascinating how they did, but I can't reveal their secret. You'll have to go to try it first and ask them yourself. Be advised, you do order through bullet proof glass, but we didn't see any problems near by or felt unsafe. read more

Continuing my firm belief of "try everything at least once" motto, we tried halal & Bangladeshi pizza for the first time. I've had this bookmarked for awhile but being Ramadan and having had amazing Bangladeshi food at Aladdin Sweets & Cafe 3 days ago, I was inspired for more ethnic eats. With so many 4 star reviews and a visit by Andrew Zimmern, how can you not? {{I will preface this by saying DF was very, very hesitant....He's always open to new experiences but eating is a personal experience and he didn't want his taste buds to be violated with a concept so foreign. Go with something new like their own specialty pizza's and something you know like a veggie & even pepperoni pizza.}} 1 word : UNIQUE is how I would describe this overall 4 star pizza joint. For our typical #pizzafriday we got 2 square deep dish but instead of getting our usual pizza & cheesy bread, we skipped the cheesy bread for aforementioned 2nd pizza. My logic was 2 small squares with half & half on each so we could try as much of their popular choices as possible. $26 later, we're fans! 1) Dry Fish pizza: Dried shrimp, roasted garlic, onions, cilantro and spicy fish paste sauce. The highly (but stinky) pizza everyone recommended was calling my name. Fish paste and dried shrimp isn't a new concept to me. Its in a lot of Vietnamese and Filipino cuisine but I was interested in how this would taste on a pizza. The idea is that the paste and shrimp get crunchy during the baking process and it sure does. It's like the texture of fried shallots (often found on Banh cuon for Vietnamese food). If you can get over the smell, its worth trying! Oh, and ask for a side of Naga sauce which is like a marinara sauce with some ghost peppers for a little kick. We dipped our pizza in that and it was so good! 2) Tandoori pizza: Tandoori chicken breast, red onions and cheese in their special tandoori sauce. This was spicier than the dry fish pizza even though the pizza says "Spicy fish paste sauce." Its also sweeter which I don't remember tandoori being so sweet. I honestly didn't like it as much as I hoped I would being that I love tandoori chicken. Ask for a side of tandoori sauce to dip the pizza in and it's so much spicier and good! 3) Vegetarian Pizza: your typical veggie pizza with mushrooms, olives, green peppers, tomatoes but BONUS: Broccoli & breaded eggplant! Wow that eggplant took it to a whole new level. I like that it was breaded b/c regular eggplant needs to be "sweated" lest it seep a watery mess all over your pizza. Breading & frying it like eggplant parmesan (and who doesn't love fried eggplant parmesan slathered in cheese?) and adding slices all over the pizza was creative. I've had broccoli on pizza before and this was good but could've been cut into smaller florets so that it would give it more of a roasted flavor during the baking process. Def a fan! 4) Mediterranean Pizza: Homemade garlic sauce, marinated chicken breast, tomatoes, black olives and red onions and cilantro. This was good but I feel Amar missed the boat on this one. It was lacking that Mediterranean flavor. I think there should've been some feta on this pizza and some oregano spices. Next time I wanna try the Spice Pizza & Gyro Pizza. Maybe not the Naga Pizza only b/c I got a side of the sauce so I think I have an idea of what that would taste like. You can tell their customers like trying out new flavors b/c the girl picking up next to me got Philly Cheese Steak Pizza and she said she's tried the Spinach & Gyro and thought it was tasty. Pro Tip: Ask for side naga & tandoori sauce ($0.25 ea) and they even have ranch if you're that type of pizza eater. read more

Maybe that one time it was a new employee that didn't quite understand the delivery area? Really good pizza. Best halal pizza I've ever had! Amar Pizza is tucked in on a street corner. There are two tables for folks who want to dine in, but it's largely a take out place. The staff is friendly and oriented is to the menu. They make their pizzas thin crust, round, and square. They also allow you to do half and half on the same pizza if you want to try two different kinds. They also make them reasonably quickly. We opted for a half naga and half tandoori pizza and they were both amazing!! The naga definitely had a spicy kick and the tandoori had an ever so slight sweet taste to the sauce and so they complimented each other really well. The crust was perfect too. The Naga pizza comes with a special signature sauce that makes it very flavorful. It's a little spicy which adds a fire kick to it. It also has onions, cilantro and chicken. Must try!!! The Philly steak is also another favorite of mine. It comes with green peppers, onions, Philly steak and Cajun crust. Besides pizza I also tried few other dishes which were amazing. Be sure to give it a try, you will not be disappointed! I normally call in my order for pickup and it takes me 20-25 minutes to get there and the pizza is usually ready by then. All I have to say is wow! This will be my go to pizza place from now on. I ordered a small shawarma pizza & a small cheese bread. The toppings on my pizza were superrrrr fresh and the dough was nice n thick but not too thick. Edges were browned just right n the parsley they toss on top phenomenally added to the flavor. I can't wait to try their other specialty pizzas. The cheese bread was cheesy and the Italian seasoning was perfectly added. I loveeeeee this place. This is the best pizza in all of metro Detroit! Amar Pizza is slowly getting recognized and it is much deserved. They have delicious pizza, laughably cheap prices, great customer service and creative food in a generally routine genre of cuisine: pizza. They offer regular American pizza which is excellent, but their Bengali fusion pizza is incredible. Bengali pizza might sound strange, but trust me it's DELICIOUS! I highly recommend the tandoori pizza with a side of naga sauce for dipping your crust. The tandoori pizza substitutes tomato sauce for a particularly good tandoori type sauce. It has chicken, onion and cheese on it. Like all the pizzas, the ingredients on the tandoori pizza taste very fresh. It's 5 bucks for small, 7 bucks for medium and 9 for large. Small cheese pizzas are only 3 dollars, and large deep dishes are 5. Their pizza is NEVER EVER greasy or sloppy. It always seems made with great care. I believe they also comply with muslim dietary constrictions, which doesn't affect me, but is still nice because you know they aren't using cheap, hormone injected meat. Two brothers own the place and they're good honest people who put a lot of TLC into their business. Very pleasant to chat with, and always provide service with a smile. Service is prompt, but everything is made fresh once ordered. Highly recommend the spice, naga and southwestern pizzas too. Have not tried the sandwiches or salads. Spinach pizza was good, but not great. Store motto is: "Amar pizza is your pizza," and apparently they'll make a pizza with almost anything you want on it. They have all the standard toppings and some exotic offerings such as eggplant & tilapia. No matter what kind of pizza you like you should TRY AMAR PIZZA. I saw this place on yelp, and although I dont live in Hamtramck the menu seemed interesting enough to leave my area. The menu is a mix of Indian foods on Pizza. Upon picking up the pizza the smell was just as interesting and appetizing as the menu, and I was excited to get home and try it. As a self proclaimed pizza aficionado, this pizza has become instantly one of my favorite joints around. I had no idea that so much flavor and spice could be put into a deep dish pizza. Kept hearing about this place from friends and decided to try it. They've always provided good, super-fast service. The prices are so low, it's outrageous. I paid like $11 for a large round including delivery and tip and they got it here in good time. The price on their regular pizza is about the best thing you can say about it, but the Chicago-style deep dish is phenomenal, on par with Pizza Papalis. Food: Ghost pepper pizza We decided to try this place after watching Andrew Zimmern eat the ghost pepper pizza. For me, the pizza was as spicy as I expected. It was good but barely edible for a wimp like me. DH enjoyed it. Naga pizza This is the pizza we crave. It has a (tomato?) naga pepper sauce which is very flavorful and spicy. I love the flavor so much I don't mind shedding a few tears due to the heat level. It's topped with tandoori spiced chicken chunks, red onions, cilantro and cheese. It's very unique and soooo good! We love this naga sauce so much that we buy several sides of it, freeze it and use it as a side sauce to dip anything (like baked chicken breast) that needs extra flavor. Tandoori hot dog: Though the hot dog itself is a bit dry, the sauce and toppings make it taste soooo good. It comes with a slight curry tasting pink sauce with onions and cilantro on top. Ghost pepper biryani: My brother tried this when he visited and though it was very good and tasty, it didn't live up to the spiciness he was expecting. I could eat spoonfuls without crying which surprised me as the naga pizza seemed hotter than this. Hands down best pizza I've had in michigan (or anywhere, cuz Chicago is good, but not as unique, and New York pizza blows). I got the ghost pepper pizza. I was pleasantly surprised that the spice didn't overwhelm the flavor. There was heat but tons of flavor. Even in the ghost pepper, you could taste it's natural smoky flavor.
