I ordered a pork burrito from Amaranto over the phone yesterday, and told them I didn't want guacamole on it. But honestly, it was a bit hard to hear over the phone, and I shouldn't have been on speakerphone so that's on me. Anyway, when I got my burrito I noticed it had guacamole, and when I brought it back they were nice enough to exchange it for one without guac. And wow, it really was ab amazing burrito. Just left this restaurant . Wow what a GREAT place. Drinks were absolutely delicious. The spicy guacamole was tasty with the chips my husband ordered the burrito and I ordered 3 out of the 4 tacos and everything tasted homemade prepared for each order as placed. Fantastic food!! I'd describe it as "elevated Mexican" in a casual, friendly place..Very fresh ingredients and lively delicious flavors. Spice guacamole is the best guacamole we've ever had! The dishes are not your run of the mill standard dishes, but the "standards" here like tacos, enchiladas, and the chicken burrito are to die for taste-wise (so fresh with an little something extra) and so beautifully presented. We hosted a party for 15 on a Saturday night. Everyone had rave reviews. I had shrimp ceviche (very fresh and flavorful) and the braised short rib (melts in your mouth with incredible and complex subtle flavors of chilis and other spices.) Can't wait to eat here again. Hail Mary full of sangria and heavenly pork chops! This thick cut of meat was perfectly cooked with a roasted pepper purée that gave my date a religious experience with every bite. He even saved a few for me. My chicken taco was all shredded crispy meat in a chipotle sauce, but that pork chop! Oh, lord. That pork chop. I would go back every Sunday for that. This felt very overpriced for the quality / quantity of food. $27 for 3 small enchiladas. They were pretty good, but the chicken was a little dry and I don't think there was anything in there that justified the price. The place was pretty empty, and a little awkward since it is just a small room with a bunch of tables. Service was good. read more

If you love Mexican food, and you are you in New York, this place is a must visit. At the time of this reviews drafting I can with confidence state that this is the best Mexican I have had in or anywhere around NYC (or anywhere else on this coast for that matter), period! While the influx of immigration from Interior parts of Mexico over the last decade or a half or so has undoubtedly improved the overall quality of the cuisine in the metropolis by many many times since my formative years, claims by some starry-eyed food-critic types that the city is approaching or matching the overall quality of Mexicuisine to be found in California and other Western Cities is wildly overblown to the point of being just silly and embarrassing. This place however, should give those homers some hope that we are at least on our way there. Probably nothing else really need more be said about this places greatness than this simple fact: It is entirely run by a family from the Puebla region with none other the the matriarch abuela behind the stove turning literal home-cooked goodness. And oh how good it is. Do yourself a favor and skip the workaday offerings of tacos and burritos that probably account for a good deal of the places business, and go with some of the authentic regional specialties, chances are they will elevate your ideas of Mexican food. Two of the seafood based starters are surely among the best things I've eaten during the past year. First would be aa delicate and complexly flavored crab tostadas, which instantly transported us to a perfect secluded cove on the Gulf with its delicious flavors, the most striking and enigmatic turning out to be dehydrated and pulverized black olives, which simply blew my mind! Joining that starter on the short list of hands down the best things I ate in 2015 were the melt in your mouth super slowly cooked short rib doused in a brilliantly complex mole verde created from a vast multitude of chiles as well as cinnamon and the licorice like herb called hoja santa. Add to this another starter that also brilliantly resonated the flavors of the sea, but in an altogether darker and more murky yet equally delicious way. That would be the huitlacoche (a delicious corn fungus) tamale laced with the fragrant he Mexican tea leaf epazote, swimming in a broth made with a combination of crab broth and beautifully accompanied by mussels and chorizo. While much acclaim has been given to the similar cuisine doled out at Long Island City's Casa Enrique at considerable higher prices, I think that establishment in fact is overrated, particularly considering the cramped unattractive environs and harried service. If you looking for the Mexican place in our fair city that would best serve to easy the well founded doubts of any West Coast transplant to the possibility that good Mexican could be found I would suggest taking them here instead, of there or anywhere else for that matter. read more

Probably one of if not the best lunch I have had in Brooklyn. I strolled in around 2 yesterday sarvingggg and freezzzing. I saw this joint on my yelp app and it looked pretty yummy. I love Mexican food but what I loved was the fact that everything was fresh and not heavy. Its Jan 7 so of course im still on my new years resolution kick to loose 10lbs. I went with the Salmon. Great choice. I was hesitant since it was lunch time not dinner but the portion was perfect and cost me it only 14 bucks. Dropping 20 on a nice lunch in Brooklyn is not out of the norm. So back to the salmon. My mother always told me as a kid "slow down no one is going to take your food away" due to the fact that I get so overly excited and sove my food in like its a contest. As an adult I make an effort to restrain myself..... Welllll most of the time. The salmon had so much going on and it all worked so well together. I couldn't decide what bite to take first I found myself scrambling to make a perfect balanced bite each time. I had to have it all in my mouth immediately. Check this place out. read more

Ok so I had this place bookmarked on here and managed to order takeout today. I called ahead and ordered one fish, one steak, and one chicken taco as well as the chicken enchiladas and a side order of the green rice. Everything came out to about $29.00. The fish taco I ended up throwing away but that was my own fault; I forgot to ask and when I got back home with it I had to call them to ask what kind of fish was in it and it ended up being catfish which I don't eat because the fish doesn't have scales; it was probably good though, I just tasted a piece of the cauliflower in it. In the steak taco the meat wasn't tender like I expected, it was very chewy and I didn't like the cheese on in but that's just me. The chicken taco was good; the only problem was the tortilla being kinda soggy but maybe I took too long to pick up my order so i'm not faulting them for that. The enchilada was the best thing I ordered and I'd give that about a 6/10 since I asked for hot sauce to go with my food without the hot sauce to add a little dimension I wouldn't have liked the enchilada because the flavor of the poblano mole is very lacking and it would've become a chore to eat. (it's a spicy pepper sauce, not that tangy hot sauce) The green rice was the worst mistake. They gave me a small container, half full and the rice was dry and chewy and you could tell by looking at it that it wasn't fresh... I'll add photos because it's hard to explain. It looked unappetizing and I only ordered it because reading the menu and looking at photos on Yelp had me dying to try this "creamy green rice" This order was made at 2:05PM on a Friday and when I got there the place was totally empty; there was not one customer at all so maybe that's why I didn't get fresh rice, not that this makes it ok; just my guess. I'd try again to dine-in at a busier time when I'm not getting last night's left over rice and twice-cooked steak. read more

I've walked by this place everyday for months and I had no idea how wonderful it was. Tonight we checked Yelp and saw that it was highly rated and that people recommend the pork burrito and the slow ribs. First, let me say that the guac here is amazing. Service was great and they are super genuine people. The cucumber vodka drink with fresh pomegranate was amazing. The food was on point from the freshness of the ingredients to the authenticity of the dishes. My favorite was the shrimp quesadilla (its not on the menu but I got it for 14$) and was extremely happy with the fresh shrimp, gooey cheese and hint of mushrooms. My friend loved the tostadas. I picked out this restaurant to come with my boyfriend. It's a cozy restaurant with candle lit tables. It's great for intimate dinner dates. The menu is extensive as well. My only drawbacks are that the waiter was not able to answer our questions. My boyfriend wanted steak and she wasn't even sure what type of steak they were serving. She seemed not at ease answering our questions. This is never a good sign. My bad experience to start out with, was the drink i ordered. The cocktail list looks great; however they really don't qualify or know what they are doing. The horchata drink i ordered with chocolate bitters and pinapple juice tasted NOTHING like horchata or anything listed in the ingredients. It was horrible. So i sent it back; which is something i NEVER do; and the waitress took it back and i ordered the carrot juice cocktail; which was "OK" but more palatable than the first one!! For the appetizer; the crab tostados tasted good for the first 2 bites but i found it to be way too overpowering for my taste. Hands down the seafood green rice was amazing! It was served very hot and the rice is creamy. It has cheese melted and sweet peas and tomatoes. The fish was baked with a nice crisp on top and it came with shrimps and mussels. My boyfriend ordered the enchiladas which i didn't find appetizing but he loved it. Overall, my experience here was OK. I'd only come back for the seafood green rice dish. A hidden gem in Bushwick. The staff is friendly and the food is outstanding. I am mexican american and I was really impressed. The food is really savory, fresh, and nicely presented. I also want to add that the food tasted that it was made with a lot of love. The prices are high but I think it's worth it. The entire menu features classics that have been reimagined in a modern and more adventurous approach. Roasted pumpkin seeds on house made Guacamole. Micro Mizuna greens atop a chilled crab tostada with tangy aioli. All the tacos are familiar staples with inventive twists, like pickled onion a Al pastor taco. Food is always excellent but I won't be coming back till the weather is warmer. Their heater is broken. They had the ceiling heater at 98 degrees and the heater was blowing cold air. Told the waiter and he said we can't shut it off it will be cold. Me and my wife then put our big puffy coats on. The pork and fish tacos were great. The guacamole great too. I came here twice, even though both times the service was so horrible that we almost left before the food even arrived. Both times, we had to wait at least 20mins for a waiter to take our order, even though the restaurant was half empty. We had to the wave and make large motions to get their attention, to no avail. I really want to like this place, but unfortunately I'll never come back because, unfortunately, we had a really unpleasant experience the second time we ate there. I went with my sister and her boyfriend. He ordered the chicken entree and it tasted strange and was extremely rubbery. We all tried it and confirmed that we should send it back. We were then publicly embarrassed in front of the whole restaurant, as a man (I'm assuming the owner or manager?) brought back the dish, that we said was not edible, and proceeded to give us a loud 10 minute rant lecture about how they cook their chicken while holding it in front of my friends face. Keep in mind, we are not people who send things back. We were embarrassed to even ask in the first place. This place was alright! The vegetables were very very fresh, making for tasty veggie-based meals. I ordered the spicy guacamole, which was tasty, the memelita, which had a very soft and fresh tortilla over some very fresh chopped veggies. My sister's burrito was massive and good as well, according to her. For drinks, we tried the horchata and zanahoria, which both tasted more of mezcal than either flavor- very strong! I gave only three stars because for the prices, I was hoping to be more wowed by the food. It was good, but not so distinguished over the many Latino food options in the neighborhood to warrant the high prices. I'd give 3.5 stars if possible. read more

I love finding amazing food in the most unassuming places... My family of 4 plus our 4-month old baby trekked out here on a Sunday night. The restaurant is located on a quiet block surrounded by brownstones, and from the outside it just looked like your local watering hole that happened to serve some bar food... how wrong we were! We ordered the spicy guac, crab tostado and fish tacos as apps, along with the pork and steak entrees. Service was fast, ingredients were fresh, and all the food was seasoned and cooked to perfection! The owners were also extremely accommodating to our baby situation. Maybe ordered wrong, but not that impressed. As an app I had the tamale with chorizo and mussels. Frankly the only tamale I've ever really enjoyed was from a woman with a street cart in Queens who made her tamales with lots of lard, so that the tamale was smooth and rich. The Amarnto tamale came in a sauce that would have been tasty if not for the fact that the mussels added a strangely fishy taste. For the main I had the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce: dry chicken that didn't seem to have actually been cooked in the sauce (which could have used a bit of thickening) and tortillas with a gooey texture. Nice owner/server who seemed overwhelmed by 4 tables in a mid sized space. Oh well. read more

This place is the best kept secret in Bushwick, or at least that's what it feels like it when you walk in. The staff is friendly and the ambience is simple. There's none of the pretension you might get in Williamsburg--no repurposed wooden tables or terrariums hanging from the ceiling. And I'm grateful for that. The menu is concise and straightforward, and everything on it is genuinely out of this world. I've been at least ten times now, and I've never once been disappointed. I recommend the shrimp ceviche, which is always so bright and refreshing, as well as the chicken tacos (honestly the best I've ever had.) The short rib and the chicken adobado are also excellent. The prices are appropriate for the quality and service is always on point. Decent Mexican restaurant situated in bushwick. Weekends were also not so crowded. The pumpkin seed guacamole was good! Ask for more slice of that's your taste, cuz gal I tell you their spicy sauce is SPICY! Like Mexican style spicy lets get a yayyyyyha! Chicken taco was all fancied and dressed up for that tender worth of three tacos. All the dishes looked decent, borderline try hard ~fusion~ Tex mex food.. Though not in a bad way. The from the garden dish was delicious with nice green verde sauce. Again, ASK FOR HOT SAUCE. Overall it's a 'not so bad' Mexican restaurant that gives you a full bar for those of you alcoholicistasssss. Now with take away and outdoor dining under umbrellas. Steak tacos were surprisingly simply but juicy and flavorful. The shrimp cerviche was served I. A very generous portion and full of shrimp, and jicama in a citrusy broth. Chicken empanadas with mole sauce was also well prepared and a generous portion, but my favorite was the short rib served in a green sauce with green beans. I was surprised when a large boneless short rib appeared on my plate, but even more thrilled that it was juicy and flavorful and not cooked to death. My guest and I also enjoyed well made margaritas with our meal, but to top it off, was the great attentive service by the staff. I made sure to let them k ow we would be returning soon. read more

If there was an award for this, best tacos would go to this place. Honestly though, best tacos i've ever had. A friend recommended me to this place. She described this place as a hidden gem of Bushwick with great priced DELICIOUS tacos. And she was so right. It's a cozy restaurant with candle lit tables. There was a lot of seating, so I was able to take my family here with no problem. My mom and I split a 1/2 pitcher of sangria for like, under 10 bucks, which is so worth the cost. It was delicious too, actually perfect, since it wasn't too sweet but just sweet enough. Even got a good buzz off of it. We each ordered two tacos which was just PERFECT. I love tacos, but this place made me fall in love with tacos all over again. They're open faced tacos made with fresh, savory ingredients. It left me satisfied, but wanting more. I give this place 4 stars, not because the food wasn't good - in fact it was really delicious and the margaritas were homemade and perfect! I thought the ingredients were high quality and fresh. I also thought the staff was very nice and friendly, and genuine. I would definitely come back here for those reasons! I ding the place 1 star only because the language barrier was actually an issue all night. My boyfriend ordered a grapefruit juice but they brought him the grapefruit cocktail with gin in it. He doesn't drink and hadn't had a sip of alcohol in 13 years....The waiter apologized for this and he stuck with water. Boyfriend also ordered a burrito and clarified with our waiter that there would not be zucchini in it. He really dislikes zucchini. The waiter appeared to understand (and maybe he even did), yet there was zucchini in the burrito. We didn't even bother to say anything because we would then have to explain what happened which was too much trouble, especially after the back and forth about the drink. He was annoyed, though. Thankfully, this wasn't an allergy issue, but for someone who was allergic to zucchini - well, you'd be on your way to the ER. So, he spent time picking out the zucchini from the burrito. I suggest the staff sort the language barrier out a bit and then those kinds of things will be ironed out. Otherwise, everything else was great! read more

When my bf and I were caught in between a show in deep Bushwick and our apt. and hungry, I was relieved to trust in the previous reviews that the food was going to be good no matter what you tried. That was true. Came here on a Sunday night to get dinner, there wasn't a wait and the place is nice and open. I ordered the fish with green creamy rice and it was delicious! The rice was definitely creamy and the sweetness of the corn made it even better. There were peas, mussels, shrimp and fish. The fish was cooked perfectly!! The mussels however were good but the shells got in my way haha! My friend ordered a pork burrito with guacamole (they forgot it and insisted we didn't order it but anyway) this was one of the best burritos I've ever had! It wasn't dry and the flavor was amazing. Came here impulsively as I was craving a sangria very badly. Menu looked great so we went for it. There was no wait for a table of two, and it was surprisingly slow and quiet for a 7:30pm weeknight. I immediately order a glass of red sangria but was surprised when they hadn't brought it out. My boyfriend, who came in about 10 minutes later, ordered a drink and he was served his immediately. We asked where my sangria was and the lady told me that the man who took my order thought I was underage. Instead of just asking for my ID, they decided to not bring it out instead. I gave her my ID and she finally gave me a glass. I would've freaked out otherwise bc the whole reason we came here was for the sangria! Anyway, the food was good. Pricey. A little over $80+ for two people. Service was pretty quick. I got the chicken adobado. Was kind of bummed that it didn't come with rice, but it was good nonetheless. Just hope they ID you next time instead of not bringing your drink out at all and not saying anything. read more
