Money grab is all it is. I would like to say Dr Behrends you need Jesus. Taking advantage of someone who is scared for there pet and a kid at that. Emergency vets are paid on commission and up charge all they can to get their paycheck. My son took his 1 yr old Double Doodle in for a 1"-2" inch incision near his groin. So initial visit was xray, blood, work, and diagnosis was $453.00, this was after it was told $100 of an after hours office fee. After my son was in the office alone, because the "VET" has the dog for 2hrs, they came in and gave my son 2 options. Option 1 was to medicate the dog consisting of anitibiotics x ray, ultra-scan?????, labs, and 8 medications. Option 2 which my son stated the Dr was pushing was $1824.15 was the surgery option which include going in checking intestine, and legs to make sure nothing was damaged, and then the suture on the opening. After my son told her he was a college student she said thats "ok, the dogs fine", really but you tried the up-sale first. After my son called me I called the office and spoke with a receptionist. I explained to her that I was wanting to know the charges they were charging my son. I explained that the animal was my dog, but I was at work and couldn't bring him. I was told my the receptionist that my son had denied some of the treatments of the "baby". I explained to her that the Dr was taking advantage of of my son, and her explination was "your son was given estimate and agreed to it". I asked if I could speak wit the Dr, ad I was told "no" that is not possible unless she was in the room with my son. I told the receptionist I was headed up there, and she said "well the Dr, will be leaving in 30 mins. When my son arrived home, he said that he had paid $325.98, and the dogs incision was still not closed, but he had 4 meds. I noticed in the notes at 6:55pm, the receptionist noted that I had called complaining of taking advantage of son. In her notations, the response was "we show estimates to son and he agreed, notated my phone number and that I was very "harsh". Notated that she had told me I couldn't speak with Dr.????if they were not in the room with patient. We spoke with several Vet friends, who advised us that was ridiculous, and the are just money grabs. Vet on-call not trained to care for any pets other than dogs and cats. Couldn't get anyone to care for my Amazon Parrot and they said they were not allowed to contact my vet in case of emergency. According to other reviews they don't do a very good on cats or dogs. DON'T BOTHER. read more

I don't understand all the negative reviews. I had to have my beloved 15-year-old cat put to sleep at this clinic. They were compassionate, caring, and helpful. I understand they're on the pricey side (from our normal veterinarians). But they kind of have to be. They are the only ones available late at night and on the weekends when we need them. Being in the medical field I can give it the grace called "practicing medicine". It's the same with people and pets both and I can't imagine how hard it is when it's a pet that can't tell you it ate something it shouldn't have and is now so lethargic you think he will die in your arms. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews. Most of them are several years old but not all and I understand why they're as emotional as they are. People are at their most vulnerable and emotional when a loved one is sick. You never really know how people react to illness. That being said, I feel like seeing both situations it seems people have a totally different reaction to their pet. It's immediately an emergency so emotions are high. I think it's takes a really special person to deal with people with sick pets and unfortunately it's just not that common. I would like to think that everyone that puts hands on my babies are doing it because they love animals but the state of the world no longer allows that choice. To do what you love or do what pays. Sometimes it takes very little education to get in a clinic due to the shortage of people wanting to work. It's not just now a problem. It's been a problem. I wish there were a way to make sure who's hired has compassion but there's no way to know. I had to drive almost 2 hours Thanksgiving night. It was 30 degrees and I was by myself. I wish the person I'd checked out with had been the one I dealt with the whole time but she wasn't. I was in the locked area filling out paperwork before they'd let me in and before my dog was examined I too was given the price sheet. Everywhere we go is a business and a vet is no exception. I imagine it's considered a luxury to own a pet because you can't refuse care to a human just because they don't have the total amount of money on them. Thank God I was blessed. That being said I was read charges two different times by an emotionless, monotone male that never got my dogs name right. That means a lot to people. Pet/animal lovers need compassion in this situation but I just don't think it's probable. I'm just feeling so blessed that my boy is ok and it's because of this clinic. After reading all the bad reviews, I felt the need to chime in after going here. I was traveling back to Georgia with my dog, and she was having some urinary issues, and since this was the only place open by the time we got to Amarillo, we stopped. I didn't want her to have to travel that far and be in pain. So first of all, it's an emergency vet. The prices are always higher. That being said, for what We had to have done, I still thought it was reasonable. The staff and doctor was kind to me and my dog. Not once did I feel like they lacked compassion. I hate the bad reviews were about to scare me away from taking my dog and try to make her push through to Oklahoma City. I found them to be thorough, quick (as quick as you can be in a vet emergency room....), and kind. They gave my dog a good work up with labs and an x ray to make sure she was good to travel the rest of the way home. My 8 month old mini Aussie woke up with a swollen eye that he couldn't open. It was a Sunday and we were on a road trip and found this as our only option. I was nervous about the bad reviews but was instantly reassured due to the kindness and care of the staff. I was in and out within an hour with medication and a cone for my sweet pup and a $200 bill -- I expected it to be much more expensive! It was only $90 for the visit and the rest was his medication and treatment. The vet techs weren't the most experienced, but the vet was very knowledgeable, kind and caring. My dog was attacked and in pain. I took him there on a Saturday afternoon. I took my dog there and I heard him screaming bloody murder in the back. I told them he needed a muzzle. Evidently he bit a vet tech. He's never punctured skin on anyone. They wanted to charge me $1300 to sew him up. I declined and opted for the cheap $900 surgery. Animal control was called. I had to quarantine him even though I had proof of vaccinations. In my opinion they don't care about your pet, just making Update I had to take my dog there again after he was attacked again. Please do not take your animal here unless it is truly an emergency. Very very expensive and the people are cold. The quote are ridiculously high. The treatments recommended are excessive - such as going under general anesthesia for stitches! Why take the risk of anesthesia for stitches? Anesthesia is hard on the animal, puts its life in jeopardy and is costly. They mark everything up. They do not include items the quote addresses. For example, I was charged for a cone. They did not provide it when I left. I asked about it and they said the animal didn't require a cone. Well, I was charged for it. And more importantly, the animal did need it! I had to go buy one after I got home. They are more interested in making an extra buck than the patients. Quotes also padded by $60! Just in case they need it. Awful experience. Went in with a dog who had an ear infection and was charged $1200 for them to give her an oral antibiotic and two injections(not antibiotics). The infection grew and we had to go to another clinic the following day. They were no help the following day and I'm very disappointed in the lack of care. We had a freak accident happen with my dog. We frantically rushed him here. They took care of my boy and he was just fine. They were very professional and kind. I was very grateful that they have a skilled staff that can handle tough situations. I can only imagine that what they do isn't easy. They stay open 24/7 and they handle some of the toughest stuff. I know a lot of people come here under a lot of stress and dispare and the staff does their best to accommodate people at some of their darkest times. Yes, it's expensive to bring your pet here, but take into consideration that it's a visit that happens after hours, they are performing surgery, contacting poison control, providing medication, and performing life saving treatments for our pets. There were several people ahead of us so we had to wait a bit to be seen. That was the only downside but there is not much they can do about that. I took my cat in for an abscess from a cat bite on Sunday afternoon. It was my first visit here. The employees were all polite, professional, and kind. The facility was clean and neat. One person went ahead of me for an urgent situation--certainly understandable. The vet explained my cat's injury and the best treatment. The bill was just under $130 for the exam and an injection. I took my cat, Willie, there to be put to sleep. I was wanting to wait until I could bring him to his normal vet, but he seemed to be in so much pain and the emergency clinic was the only place open on a Sunday. They brought us into a room right away. I had stated that I wanted to be in the room with him when he passed and they agreed, but said they had to take him to the back for a quick exam and put the catheter in. I didn't know this would be the last time I would see him. I could hear him screaming and meowing SO LOUD for minuets and then a nurse came out and said that since he was panicking so much and resisting that they would have to put him down another way and I wasn't allowed to be there. She didn't explain to me what was going on, she didn't propose any other options. I feel like it could have been handled differently, they could have brought me in to calm him down, or given him a sedative or numbing medicine before attempting to put the catheter in again-but it happened so fast, and I was never able to give my pet a real good bye. I brought him to the clinic so he could have a peaceful death, but instead he spent his last moments terrified. Also, it wasn't explained to me that the remains needed to be collected within three days, but thankfully I called the next day saying I was going to bring him to Rainbow Bridge and they needed to hold for a few days and they confirmed they changed the info on his sticker to match that. But then the next morning I get a phone call saying that his remains were picked up by Critter Camp and I needed to get in contact with them to handle it. I just feel like I wasn't listened to. Also, I wish they would have had a candle or something in their lobby signaling to other clients that an animal is being put down, because when I came out of my room, another client asked me "who was in my crate" and I had to be like, "nobody...." And I know that's not the client's fault but other clinics have a way to prevent that by lighting a candle that tells people to be respectful. My cat was literally the love of my life and I wish I had a better experience to share. read more

If I could I'd give a no star! My moms baby slid off porch last night and broke her leg. Took her here they gave her a shot for pain that didn't work. I asked for them to at least wrap her leg to stabilize it till could get her into a vet today. They stated they couldn't do that! The poor baby every time she moved all night she yelped! My vet at high plains animal vets wrapped it today and no pain or yelps. She does need surgery to repair. The vet surgeon could not believe that this clinic would not stabilize the leg. If I could give a place negative stars, this would be the one. I took my dog in after he was hit by a car to get help and to save him. As soon as they took him back they came in the room with the bill. And at that point I was willing to pay whatever to save my baby. Well as they keep going, the prices skyrocket like no other and before you know it I'm looking at over $2k. I was in so much pain and crying my heart out because I had to pick up my baby off the street and get him there, while I'm covered in blood. We reached a point where he was stable and not doing so good, so the doctor asked me if I wanted to continue treatment or put him down. I was alone and that was by far the hardest decision I had to make. So it took me a while because I couldn't wrap my head around it and couldn't stop crying to think. One of their employees had the audacity to come in and tell me that they had a lot going on and asked me to go sit in the lobby. While I was such a mess and crying my heart out with my baby still on the table in the back! She was such a heartless person, and on top of everything she was the one badgering me about the payment throughout the whole visit! All I can say is shame on her, I hope she doesn't ever have to endure pain like that and then get treated the way she treated me. That place just cares about money, not the well-being of you or your pet. I felt absolutely no compassion or sympathy. I would've taken my baby elsewhere, but they said he wouldn't make the travel and then they didn't have the technology to do MRI's or scans to figure out what was going on. For being the only place you can take them, it is so sad. Please don't take your babies here!! read more

I normally do not give a bad review, but this is a must know about this place. My son took his dog there in an emergency situation. They tested the dog positive for parvo and kept her overnight. Charged $500. The next morning when the dog was picked up the verbal instructions were just to take the dog home and give her chicken soup ... really.?.? No written instructions, no medications, no instruction to take the dog to the vet for more hospitalization, NOTHING!!! And yes, the dog passed away during the night at home. After calling the clinic several times and explaining the heartache we have all experienced not to mention the outrageous prices they've charged , they're in complete denial of any fault of theirs and are not willing to accept responsibility for the death of this sweet dog. The staff here might be some of the meanest, most cruel people I have ever seen. I took our dog there to get treated for a snake bite. They laid out the cost, astronomical as you can imagine, but we were willing to pay. Showed them a direct deposit statement that indicated we would have the money by the time they were done treating. They said no. Then I asked if there was a way to administer one vial of the antivenin because i could afford that at the time and I was just trying to get my dog better. They said no. Then, when I'm finally at my whits end, the tech rushed me to make a decision. I made the decision to get my dog out of there and seek treatment elsewhere. I know this is business and you can't work for free, but you have to have a little more tact in these cases. They wouldn't do anything to help me or my pet that was in pain and that to me is a good sign that you care more about $$$ than actual animal welfare read more

We were travelling from Houston with our dogs on a camping trip. We had passed through Amarillo about thirty minutes before, when we pulled over in a spot we knew where we could let the dogs out for a potty break and some water. Roxy, our 13 year old golden retriever mix, was not sitting up. She was breathing hard and just lying there. We returned to Amarillo and looked on our phone for an emergency animal hospital. We called to make sure they were open. They met us at the door, taking our baby from my husband's arms. They carried her into the back for the doctor to examine. The vet tech who'd taken her came back to us and asked about using CPR or and DNR; he commented kindly that she was not doing well and they wanted to know what we wanted. The pricing was clearly on the form they handed us. We were placed in a waiting room and the vet came in to talk with us. She was an experienced veterinarian, for which I was grateful. She told us that Roxy's heart was not working well, that she was low on oxygen, and that there was nothing medical that could be done. She gave us clear guidance that the compassionate thing for Roxy would be to put her to sleep. This was not a hard decision, though it was a painful one, largely because of the straightforward yet tender guidance Dr. Chase gave us. They put an IV in Roxy and brought her to our room on a gurney. We stroked her as Dr. Chase gave her the medicine. Dr. Chase let us know when she was gone. They gave us time to say goodbye to her. Our ordeal was made more bearable because of the compassionate and professional care that we received. read more

Best part of the review is that my pup got stabilized enough to go see our regular doctor. I don't think anything else was highly good or bad. The doctor was the most friendly and kind of had a "sorry we can't do that" attitude. Most people just want to know if they should worry or if they're okay to take a breath and she couldn't seem to do that without giving me an "estimate" first. On Sunday, September 10, 2017 we encountered a severe dog attack on a FAMILY MEMBER. Most people consider their pets family and this is what happened. The neighbor's dogs broke through the fence, chewed through, busted the fence not for the first time but the 5th time and attacked a beautiful, tame, pit bull named Khaos. They injured him so fast that the dogs went for his throat and crushed his windpipe so he couldn't bark or even cry out for help. When the owner of the dog came out because she heard whimpering the 2 dogs were on Khaos and had injured him so bad he was helpless. The attack was brutal! When the owner of Khaos came out she grab a shovel and began to swing just to get these dogs off of her baby. Even with fear of being attacked herself AGAIN by these dogs (which resulted in multiple stitches previously, herself) she fought those dogs off. The 2 murderers remained in the yard until the neighbor came home and had to even carry the dogs through Khaos home. Animal control came and Khaos was rushed to the Small Animal Emergency Clinic. After time, I went to the clinic to see if I could be of help to Khaos momma. When I walked in the hardest thing for me at that moment was to see her lying on the floor with this bloody dog, holding, comforting him. I think we all knew how bad, just hoped for a good outcome that his injuries were superficial. We signed, paid and left him in the care of the Clinic. By the time we got back to their house the Vet had called and Khaos had turned for the worst and they did CPR for more than 10 minutes and he didn't make it. Everyone was devastated. Animal Control still on the scene taking pictures and documenting and taking the 2 murderers with them as the neighbor signed custody over to the city. We were told by Animal Control that the dog would be tagged and held for 72 hours because it was a death. The next morning multiple people contacted Animal Control and the Animal Clinic to locate Khaos body. However, after one saying they didn't have him and then saying he was cremated to finally the Animal Clinic saying it was all a miscommunication and the "dog was buried with other unwanted animals and they did not know where he was buried". So, now this family has no closure of their fur baby. He was brutally murdered and their lives are never going to be the same for the 2 brave women who beat the dogs of their baby. How can you lie to these people and tell them you have no idea where Khaos is? If this is how you are treating peoples loved ones maybe you are in the wrong profession. I feel so bad for this family. Nothing you can do now or say that will make this right. But, please be more aware of how you perform on loved ones, this maybe a job to you, but these are family members to those being brought into the clinic. read more

My husband and I came home on the 26th of December and picked up our cat who we had boarded at a local vet hospital. When we got him him I could tell he wasn't doing well. We took him here to the small animal hospital the next morning and the vet there was so good and told us that he was really sick snd would be best to put him down. That was very hard for my husband and myself to handle expecially knowing that we had put him with a vet to watch him. Well now it's April and I was finally to the point that I wanted to donate what I had of his that I didn't want to keep or needed. So I decided that the best place to take it was to the animal hospital where he had spent his last hours. Well I dropped it all off on a Friday before they opened and left a note who it was from snd thanked them. Well on Saturday I thought I would just call to see if they got it and if they were able to use it. Well the girl that answered the phone had me tell her what I dropped off snd I did and all she said was "yes we got it". No thank you no we appreciate you thinking of us nothing which made me feel like why did I even bother. If you are going to work at a place that requires simpathy to the people that walk in or donate you should at least be polite and say thank you. So my advice is you want to help them out with donating to them dont expect any appreciation at least from the girl that I talk to. read more

Not compassionate, questionably unethical ,0 stars if it were possible My son's companion of 10 years Belle was in distress, Belle had a seizure after battling a cold, we called ahead they said to come on down. When we got there less than 15 minutes later they refused treatment unless we allowed them to take her thru a closed locked door without any family to attend,meanwhile one of the techs (Dallas) talked under his breath making jokes behind the glass. This did not give us confidence that compassionate care would be provided. And if they are acting ethically why would one family member not be allowed in the room? We went on down the road to the next after hours vet who had unfortunately closed early.Belle had another siezure. Belle who was a little ray of sunshine who brought smiles and joy with her unconditional love to everyone who met her died on the way back home in the arms of someone who loves her. Belle loved everyone whether it was the neighbor dogs passing by,the pizza delivery man, the grumpy mail man or all the kids who stopped to visit. She also loved getting in her backpack and going to the store, riding in her basket to see the town by bicycle and chasing squirrels. She will be greatly missed.
