I love this place! I've ordered cupcakes from them numerous times and they are always delicious. And, I just attended my first cake decorating class with them and couldn't be happier. Katie (our decorating instructor) was awesome and was very encouraging. You order your cake in advance and then you're served beer/wine or mimosas and you're taught how to decorate your cake. Everyone goes home with the same decoration but it was very detailed and still a great time! I love that they've reorganized and are open until 10pm on weekends. If you're around the bench you should do yourself a favor and stop in for a slice and a drink. read more

Wow, talk about a lifesaver! We are throwing a bday party for my son and his closest 30 friends. Lol. My wife (god bless her) is making a huge cake and a ton of cupcakes. A few of the kids have come out as gluten free, dairy free and soy free or some combination thereof. So what do I do? I mean I can't let the kids go without some chocolaty goodness right? So I call my buddy who just married a gluten free Vegan and he said that these guys made their wedding cake and it was "F***ing delicious!"! It was my birthday and I wanted a little cupcake to celebrate my day. There are many cupcake flavors and varieties to choose from including gluten free and vegan flavors. The cost is average compared to other cupcake bakeries I've been to, although for the cost I am used to the cupcakes having a filling. The 3 I purchased were not filled, and they only had 1 that had filling. The peanut butter and the lemon blackberry were both dry. Not only did they deliver another bride's cake to my friend up in McCall, but they then made one of the guests come pick up her actual cake and refused to deliver the correct one. Somewhere there is a wedding today where no cake will be delivered (because they aren't picking this one up either), and somehow this isn't the bakery's fault? Ridiculous. Chris and Aimee were so helpful when I needed a birthday cake in a pinch! I had planned on baking my four year old's cake when I was suddenly hit with the scale of the party we were undertaking. I called Amaru on Friday morning and was able to pick it up the next day before the party. Their cake was delicious (as always) and looked amazing for my Super Hero theme. I recommend this place to people constantly- I have been hard pressed to find cakes that taste this good! Always professional, helpful, and the storefront is just as cute as can be with hot pink walls and vintage stoves. Me and my kids just had the WORST experience at Amaru Confections. I have never been to Amaru before today, but I'm fixing up a rental on the Boise bench and drive by the bakery several times a day. They have a sign out front that advertises a "happy hour" from 3-6pm every day. I happened to have my 2 small children with me and thought "oh, why not swing in for one of their happy hour baked goods that they get rid of at the end of the day", like most bakeries do! We walked inside to find out that the "happy hour" was on beer and wine, which it doesn't advertise on the outside of their building that they sell anything other than baked goods. So, I ended up spending nearly $9 on two cupcakes at full price (which would be fine had I been prepared for that). The gal that was working there literally turned her back to us and started washing a dish after she explained the happy hour to us like she was discussed by the idea that we thought it would be a happy hour for cupcakes. Then when I got her attention to tell her the flavors my kids had chosen, she picked out the scrawniest "unicorn" style for my daughter, which I thought was weird, and normal size cupcake for my son. I think the gal working was not the owner, and my biggest problem was the false advertising from the outside of the building. But one I had my kids inside, I couldn't say "sorry kids, just kidding, you're not getting that cupcake we came here for". read more

What a great experience! I ordered a car themed cake for my son's second birthday and it surpassed my expectations. The staff noted everything I asked for in terms of design. I've been here twice and purchased 8 different cupcake flavors total. Their cupcakes are a generous size, but heavy from being frozen and thawed- and at $3.50+ per cupcake, I don't want defrosted cake. Or at least I don't want to be able to actually tell I'm eating defrosted cake. Their cream cheese frosting doesn't taste like cream cheese, and the other frosting flavors are bland. If you ate these blindfolded, you wouldn't be able to guess the flavor. How does this place have a 4 star rating? I think most people don't actually bake from scratch themselves, and/or are persuaded by the pretty presentation. (Which IS nice.) All in all, I'd say pass. read more

The gluten free blueberry muffins - SO good. These puppies have a thin layer of crystalized sugar on the top that makes for a sweet little crunch before breaking into the soft muffin. The texture of these is slightly more crumbly than non-gluten free dough, but definitely NOT dry. Plus, there are lots of delicious REAL blueberries throughout. They serve up one of the yummiest gluten free muffins I've ever had. Amaru does gluten free right. I'm can't wait to go back and try out some of their other baked goods! read more

We ordered a dozen lemon cupcakes for our wedding and they were absolutely delicious! I could not have been more pleased! The cake part was moist and flavorful and the frosting thick and creamy. I used Amaru for our wedding cake, grooms cake and cupcakes. All of the cakes were amazing. I am a baker, and have made several wedding cakes. Amaru's cakes did not disappoint. The Guinness Chocolate Grooms Cake with Salted Caramel filling was a huge hit. We ordered way more cake than we had guests and we barely had any left overs. It was that good! Our wedding cake was gorgeous, just like the picture we discussed. Our initials were piped on fondant dots, the color of the piping was a little off, so that's why I didn't give them a perfect 5 stars. Other than that our two tier mini wedding cake was gorgeous. Great work with butter cream & fondant, the look of the cake was flawless. The cakes were boards that did not fit the cake stands we had, but I don't blame them for that... That was my communication error. It did not effect our special day, and the cakes & cupcakes by Amaru looked lovely on our cake table. The customer service offered by Amaru is excellent, far superior to another popular vendor who I also contacted regarding our wedding cake. I added the groom's cake 1 week prior to the wedding, and their response was no problem. They are very easy to work with. I would definitely recommend Amaru for any of your cake & cupcake needs. read more

Chris W. (the other owner of this facility) responded to my original comment. Unfortunately there are SEVERAL inaccuracies in his response. The first person I spoke to on the phone when I called was Chris, not Aimee. Chris DID NOT tell me that they were not a certified gluten free bakery. Their website on that day (Jan 3rd) DID NOT have ANY WARNINGS, in fact it used the words "gluten free" EVERYWHERE. The person at Whole Foods stated very confidently that the cupcakes from Amaru were entirely gluten free and safe for my granddaughter, due to what they had been told by Amaru. At Whole Foods there was a sign that called them "glutenless" rather than gluten free. My daughter asked about the "glutenless" designation, "Does that mean it's not gluten free?" and was told it was safe for a celiac. The second time I called, later that day, Aimee told me that they did not use separate equipment, only washed these items. This doesn't work for someone with celiac disease. I told her at that time that my daughter had ALREADY purchased the cupcake at Whole Foods and given it to Carly to eat. I did not get any kind of apology, just a very defensive and hostile reaction. But Chris is STILL trying to make this out to be OUR FAULT! Again, I reiterate, DON'T BOTHER using gluten free flours to bake with if you won't do it right! Someday someone will become ill right there in your facility, and it will serve you right! Have fun cleaning it up! read more

I've always loved Amaru's cupcakes! They are my go-to and I've purchased them for birthdays, baby showers and the occasionally yummy treat for myself. I decided to order two large cakes for my big birthday! Amber was super helpful and suggested this fantastic design (July 4th birthday). To celebrate our son's first birthday we decided to have a First Fiesta for him and went with a Mexican themed party. We found a picture of a sombrero cake and fell in love with the fun idea. We simply took in our picture to Amaru and the day of the Fiesta, the cake was amazing. It looked exactly like the one in the picture. Everyone complemented us on the cake. Then when we cut the cake and tasted, everyone was equally impressed. The cake was delivered on time and it was a friendly really easy process. I also really like the reminder deliver text sent ahead of time. This tells me they are professional and also take pride in their service. We will definitely use them for future celebrations...or just a craving of any sort because that's how amazing their cupcakes and cakes are. Inedible cake and the owners attitude have me writing this bad review. Cake was burnt and instead of trying to make it right, he would rather argue. I have pictures and about 20 guests that will tell you it was burnt and went in the trash. He won't help resolve the issue because according to him "you won't be a return customer anyway, so why should I?" I'm so glad I used Amaru for my wedding cupcakes. My son has a nut allergy, many of my guests are vegan and some have gluten allergies. Amaru was my pick ever since I got engaged because I knew they could work with all of those special requests. The cupcakes are so delicious! Okay a little bit of a long review here, bare with me. I tried Amaru for the first time a few months ago. I need gluten free and vegan treats, so I was excited to find a place that offered something that fit my diet. I just don't want to cook 1-2 dozen cupcakes or cookies every time I want one. The first time I tried the gluten free/vegan chocolate cupcakes, I thought they were fine, but not great. The taste was okay, but it was kind of dry and "blah". I also tried the vanilla bean gf/V cupcake and while I liked the taste better, the dryness was even worse. I would have given it 2.5 - 3 stars. Not bad, definitely worthy in a pinch, but not something I'd frequent. Fast forward to today! I came across this yelp page and happened to read one of the poor reviews complaining about the dry/crumbli-ness of the cupcakes. The owner responded to wait and let the cupcake sit in room temp for 20 or so minutes before eating as they have to sit in a refrigerated section in the bakery. This made sense, so I tried the vanilla bean gluten free/vegan cupcakes again today as I had a sweet craving. And while yes, it is mildly inconvenient to wait until the cupcakes come to room temperature, it made all the difference in the world. The vanilla bean cupcake was delicious! Such good vanilla flavor and after coming back to room temp was no longer dry and not nearly as crumbly. So tasty. The frosting was also very creamy and delightful. I'll keep coming back for those vanilla bean cupcakes when I'm looking for a sweet treat. The atmosphere is also pleasant, customer service was friendly and its easy to get to. I gave four stars instead of five because they only have the two options I can eat. :P I'm sure this is a 5 star place for non-diet restricted people. Oh My Gawd I just ate a Mexican mocha cupcake.....it was like crack cocaine. I WANT MORE!!!!!! It was huge, enough for two people easily. But I snorked the entire thing! The cake part was so dense and moist. So chocolatey and firm. But that icing....ooooooooooooooooo the icing. It was like biting into a chunk of cool, cinnamony, fudgey, fudge. I seriously died in my car and went to heaven. Who knew a cupcake could take me to nirvana in one bite? I've driven past this little shop many times and I had no idea of the wonders within. DELICIOUS CAKE! I ordered a cake in the shape of a classic book. The cake was moist (and stayed moist for up to 3 days after we picked it up (you've got to love left overs!), and the butter cream icing was delicious (not too sweet). I would caution people with the owner/management of this bakery. We ordered a wedding cake from them this past year for Sept 17th. As good as their samples tasted and smiles were sweet, that all went out the window when they dropped our wedding cake just outside the venue...To start, they opted to use the venue's cart to load a 5 tier cake. Then the owner, not just any employee but the owner himself said, he would refund us the cake ($1200) and try to put something together...What bakery doesn't have their own cart for delivery? The ladies worked and put together a smaller copy of our cake. However, the cake was smaller, NOT the flavors we paid for, had a STYROFOAM bottom tier and old tasting... It was 2hrs late from original schedule of course, so the photographer was paid extra to stay. When we showed up to return the base the owner REFUSED to keep his word on the refund. He wished to only repay us $200 dollars because in his eyes he at least had some sort of "cake" there at our wedding. He even went so low to BLAME THE BRIDE because she had called 3 days before to change the color of ribbon from gold to silver; Said she basically jinxed the cake and that's why it wasn't meant to be eaten. What kind of person blames a bride, on a stressful day alone, for his own mistakes? He also simply shrugged his shoulders when he was told that the majority of the cake had coconut and the groom(who has allergies) had allergic reactions to it. I do thank the ladies who had to work to put something together but shame on the owner for going back on his word and not taking responsibility. All in all we argued for a slight refund and ended spending around $800 for a smaller cake that didn't have the flavors we originally agreed on...would not recommend the business for wedding or large event that is a big responsibility. Maybe for a quick sweet teat but that's all. A person's word goes a long way not only in life but in running a business. Shame on the owner. read more

This is a cute little shop but not a lot of choices. I had the cinnamon roll. It's large and the dough part is tasty but they put buttercream on it instead of sugar icing. The butter cream taste exactly like butter. Like I was eating a stick of butter on bread. My son had the death by chocolate (I think that's what it was called) cupcake and it had NO chocolate flavor in the cake part. Very strange. They ruined a 50th Birthday Surprise, by delivered birthday cake & cupcakes to St. Al's in Boise, instead of Big Al's in The Village at Meridian, then told us to "go pick them up yourself, if you want them", as guest of honor was arriving at his party. How's that for customer service? NEVER even offered a refund of ANY amount for the inconvenience. Said "we'll use this as a 'learning experience'"! WOW, that made things better! Well, guess what, Amaru, notarized affidavits from several guests are being sent to American Express and dispute being reopened by them just now. Again, all I ever wanted was a refund of any amount, as a small token or gesture on your part.
