I DoorDash'ed myself and my family dinner from Amato's Gorham tonight. They gave the DoorDash driver someone else's order. When I called about it the young man that answered the phone wasn't sure how to handle it so he asked me to hold. Then a loud brash HELLO about broke my ear drum comes from the phone. I explained to Sabrina what happened and she could NOT have been any ruder to me and kept cutting me off and saying "call DoorDash" over and over again. I told her I was going to call someone above her head and she yelled into the phone "GO AHEAD". Will NOT ever eat there again! read more

A woman named Sabrina came out and started calling me swears, and she was saying that my life is pathetic and that I'm pathetic and that I'm pathetic and she was saying that we were loitering when my friend was literally eating there, and we were just sitting with her. Nick was amazing though highly recommend he was the best person there. I'm not sure how things go with getting paper plates, napkins, plastic ware, or dipping sauces with your food. I'd think it's a given, as it's a restaurant. you'd think it'd be a given since they serve food? So a dasher came into Amatos I think it was 2 days ago and she grabbed some plates and napkins for her order to which the boss man's son decides to yell at her from behind the counter for taking napkins and plates for her customers food in front of other customers Saying she can't take them bc it's to expensive so does that mean no one can grab plates, napkins, plastic ware or extra dipping sauces with their food? I called in an order for pickup today. The man over the phone said it would be a 25-30 minute wait. I waited about 25 minutes to get to Amato's. I paid and they regurgitated back what I had ordered - 3 subs. I waited an additional 40 minutes as people were coming and going picking up their orders. No good deed goes unpunished. I informed the man making my sandwich that he had food in his beard to which while standing right there wiped the food out of his beard who knows where that went then proceeded to finish up the sandwich with the same gloved hand, gross! Long story short I found a hair in my sandwich all in all if you're not going to better maintain your facial hair should you not be required to wear a beard net well leaning over and handling other people's food. I have been craving Amato's for the last 2 years as I now live out of state. Finally, I'm back in town and I got the chance to make an order. My wife and I called in to order 2 Classic Italians (not regular) with extra pickles and no olives, and a cheese pazzo. Simple enough order. However, the woman who took my call was baffled at the request and took 8 minutes to input it into the system. No big deal at this point. Once I arrived my sandwiches were in a bag waiting for me and she told me I was all set. I asked about the pazzo and she looked like I just hit her puppy. She said it didn't make it into the oven and that I'd have to wait 15 minutes. After a few minutes she very nervously asked me if I would take a substitute of garlic knots or whatever instead. Since I was already running late, I obliged. We got home and I opened the sandwich wrapper. I was provided 2 regular Italians loaded with olives. Ok, fine, I can remove them. Once I took off the olives I noticed that a pile of brown disgusting pickles were revealed. Not one thing was correct on the order and the sandwiches were completely inedible. I am incredibly disappointed and let down after such a long time waiting for this meal. I don't even know if I'll work up the courage to go to another Amato's location to try again before leaving. Suggestions: fresher ingredients, listening when an order is being placed, better customer service, and compensation for mistakes. read more

Ordered online, indicated it would be ready by 6:36 (which was 40 minutes from time of order). Got there at 6:35 and they handed me my sandwich and said the rest of the order was in the oven. At bit later they said they didn't have any order for me. Finally found my order except for for one order of veggie stuffers. They said they would credit me. I said "what do you want me to tell the person these were for? I want my stuffers.". Finally got my order an hour after it was supposed to be ready. Got home and the sandwich was soggy, four of the items were overcooked and the stuffers they made on the fly were just cooked. Very, very unhappy. read more

Literally cannot get an order right. The last three times we have attempted to get food here something has been so wrong it's beyond comprehension. From a turkey blt with ham, no tomatoes and oil to a meatball parm with no parm and some unidentified deli cheese.We will never go to this Amato's again. Perhaps you have to grow up on it to love it, a lot like Moxie. I'm a huge Italian fan (no onions, no oil) with a side of pazzo bread w/sauce. MMmm-mmm! Top it off with a whoopie pie and a Moxie and I am a happy girl in Maine. Admittedly not the best sandwiches in the world. It takes some re-engineering to cram all the goodies in just right so they don't slip out onto your lap -- but it's worth it. It's really all about the hot-dog like bread they use. Forget catering at this location. Ordered food for our family after a funeral. Did not get one thing as ordered- sandwich platters were a mess and not on the advertised finger rolls, the desert tray was old and did not have several of the advertised items. Very clean location and the service is always top-notch. Everyone is very friendly and bends over backwards for you. This place is generally fine, but it can be an exercise in frustration. Here's a recent interaction: Me: Can I get an antipasto salad? A: You want a pasta salad? Me: No, I want an antipasto salad. A: OK. After ordering other things, I asked her to read back the order to me and she confirmed antipasto salad. Then my wife goes to pick up the order, and comes back with a pasta salad. Not really sure what more I could have done here....it appears that the staff just aren't sure what the differences are? SMH. read more

Calzones are tasty. If you want anything else, don't bother. Avoid ordering pick up at all costs as they never get the order right. Be sure to check before leaving as it's likely they did not include everything in the order. The chicken alfredo is absolutely terrible. Very little sauce and chicken. No taste whatsoever. Twice they have gave the wrong meals. The only way to somewhat manage to eat here is ordering a calzone to eat there. Otherwise, avoid at all costs. What a joke to call this Italian.. I grew up 15 minutes from NYC, moved to the beautiful state of Maine last year after living in Georgia for 25 years.. People in Georgia have much more knowledge about what a Italian sub is than what Mainers do even though they live much closer to NYC and Little Italy.. If you want a oversized hot dog roll with a ONE! slice of ham and cheese some veggies and a pickle on the bun as I would not call it a roll this is your place.. I ordered a Classic Italian which should have had Genoa salami, capicola, prosciutto & provolone on it but the sandwich maker I guess was not that trained instead I got a Regular Italian with Ham and Cheese.. I was short on time and the 100 year old lady that took my order was not ready for my frustration nor was I for round two with her.. The food is decent but $3.25 for a dinner salad. The portion size was about right but only consisted of a handful of salad mix out of a bag ( which you can buy the whole bag for 3 bucks) 1 slice of green pepper, 2 slices of red onion and 1 lonesome black olive really 1 olive. I was passing thru Gorham ME and saw the sign in Amato's about Lobster Rolls. I remember when I lived in Portland ME 50 years ago there was a sandwich shop named Amato's that catered to workman. Decided to take one on my way home to Massachusetts. I just finished this gigantic lobster roll ..., the price was great, the lobster delicious... I have traveled the coast and had my share of fine lobster rolls . I had a great one at Reds in Wiscasset Me , another famous lobster roll place in.CT ,the beautiful lobster place at Two Lights last year waited in line there for an hour ....etc.... you get the idea.. I know and love lobster rolls. This one at Amato's was the biggest I have ever had....in fact it probably is twice as big as the average lobster roll. So even though today I was only able to spend a day at Sebago... I got to enjoy a fantastic Maine lobster roll... thank you Amato's and staff... great job. read more

Would love to give this 0 stars. Ordered for pickup at 6:50 pm. Was told 20 minutes. Showed up on time and prwpared to wait a bit. Didn't leave that place until about 8 pm. People coming in 20 minutes after I paid (7:10) came in, ordered and left at least 20-30 minutes before me. There were others waiting behind me as well. I was fortunate to hear what I assune was the manager for the evening talk trash to his employees, only to have one of the say "Fire me then. I don't give a $h1t." Top notch. All the people behind the counter seemed oblivious, except one girl trying to point out that we had been there for over 40 minutes. She was shushed several times. At about 8 pm, I was asked by one of the employees if I had a receipt, as if I had been standing there waiting for over an hour, as though I just liked to stand in line for random crap on the regular. I told him no, but magically was able to figure out what I ordered in 30 seconds. Then he walked over and grabbed our lukewarm food from the counter. IT HAD BEEN THERE THE WHOLE TIME!! Our food was cold, and our drinks were warm. The Mozzarella sticks were limp, soggy, and cold. Everything slse sucked just as bad. Not one apology or offer to make things right. I hate being this guy, but seriously... The single worst service I have had in 10+ years. Not planning on going back anytime. Amato's sucks. Period. read more

I have no idea why locals rave about this place. But they also think that Dunkin Donuts is the sh$t. The motto of this place is "The Real Italian." I didn't know that Italians were into fake cheese. Don't tip your pizza slice while you're trying to eat, or the cheese will run off, even after it's cooled. It's the consistency of snot, and the lack of consistency is only exceeded by the lack of flavor. The sandwiches are a step above Subway. Good veggies, but sliced too thick and just stacked on top of the sandwich so it all falls off before it gets to your mouth. And what kind of real Italian sandwich has no oregano? I even asked for some and they said that they didn't have any. Maybe they should call it a blandwich. read more

I love Amato's but this particular one is super slow. I ordered a simple ham and pickle sandwich and it took them an hour to get it out when no one was in the store, as well as loading my sandwich with oil when I asked for light oil. They are also very rude and not helpful. When waiting in the wrong line to order, nobody reached out or pointed me to the correct order line until I waited to get to the front and was told to go to the back of the order line to order, taking even longer than anticipated. Very monotoned and careless. I could see the man making my sandwich and he was tossing everything around the counters with attitude. Finally, they have terrible hand sanitizer. My boyfriend stopped here on his way home from golfing. He walked in and forgot his mask which he was asked to go back and get, so he did. When he walked back into Amato's he noticed that 3-5 other people were also in the store and without masks that must've walked in while he was at his car getting his mask. None of them were asked to put their masks on or go get their masks by the staff. My boyfriend called 15 minutes prior to getting to this location to order his sandwich for pick-up. The staff proceeded to only help the customers in line ordering their food in-store. Finally after waiting 30 minutes the staff ask him what he would like and he stated he called ahead for pick-up. They did not prepare his sandwich when they said they would and made him wait an extra 20 minutes to get his sandwich made. He called ahead and was still forced to wait longer than those customers who were ordering their food in-store. Horrible staff. Unorganized. Not requiring masks nor the 5 person maximum. My boyfriend stated at least 10-15 people were in the building when there is only suppose to be 5 MAX. read more

I can't say enough good things about Amato's and in particular the Gorham location. We recently had them cater our wedding and we were just blown away with our food and the service that we received. The team worked to feed about 100 people with various foods and to say that it was liked would be an understatement. The food was almost wiped clean. The team at Amato's worked with us every step of the way and helped make sure that we got everything we needed and made some special requests run smoothly. We are lovers of Amato's on a regular basis and on a smaller scale, but how they were able to wow us on our wedding day will forever last in our memory. I would highly recommend swinging by and having a bite to eat here when you are in the area! read more

Catering will be done somewhere else. Ordered a large Lasagna, priced about right, serves 20-30. A 1/4 was eaten with 23 people. Their lasagna is a poor substitute for what it should look like... Low sauce, barely any ricotta, or mozzarella. I expected at least a proper amount of ingredients. I called, and was told that is how they make it. I called again, and was told to call corporate, because it was made to specifications. Called Corporate and waiting to hear back. I have ordered from this Amato's for years when I want a proper Italian. I shall stick to that, and get it at the St John location!
