Nice local hang out with quite a few options from sandwiches, bakery, treats, soups, and iced coffees. I've been in here a few times, but it's been a while. Ordered a special today and the barbecue chicken was very good. My hangup was Service and I see this everywhere. Too many people standing around. I arrived at 1:30 PM with no one in line and a handful of people eating inside and outside. I waited at least 15 + minutes for a sandwich. It seemed to me that a strong emphasis was on takeout orders, and DoorDash with only two people making sandwiches and 4 ee's behind the register and coffee bar hanging out talking. I wasn't really in a huge hurry yet my two or three ingredient sandwich should've been out significantly faster than what I experienced. Arguably, the best sandwiches along the coast. When I ran the YMCA down the road, I was here multiple times a week. At least one member of my staff would come here every day. While I am not as fond of their baked goods as their savory options, they have two sandwiches that I find faultless. The roast beef and turkey sandwiches, with their respective sauces, are perfect, and they don't even toast the bread. Parking can be tricky during peak hours as they lot is a bit of a mess, and there isn't a lot of seating inside which can make dine in an issue, but the service is quick and the prices are reasonable for the quality of the sandwiches. The tables and chairs are clean. You'll often have one person taking up a table of four for two hours while working remotely during lunch rush. I would like the staff to enforce that, but I understand that isn't a fun conversation to have. Highly recommend if you're in Freeport as a tourist and want a sandwich. read more

I used to come to Clayton's often when I lived in Maine. They have a great sandwich selection and several salads made to order and premade salads as well - like broccoli salad, street corn, etc. Today I came with 2 friends. We ordered at the counter and sat outside to eat. Inside felt warmer than we were comfortable with and it was GORGEOUS out. They have lots of picnic tables outside and several have umbrellas. The woman taking our order put it in all together so our food would come out at the same time and then she was kind enough to split the order so we could each pay our own - without us asking her to - she offered! One person had the Roma and liked it. One had the Falafel Wrap and said it was great and I had the Ham and Brie. The sandwich said it was on 'grilled' sourdough, but it was on toasted sourdough. Now look, I get that to most people there is not a difference, but to me - grilled is made on a flattop with some sort of fat to create the golden brown, buttery goodness expected with a grilled cheese. Toasted is bread that has been crisped via heat source and its dry. No fat is needed to achieve the crispness of the bread. But this bread looked like it had been made crisp by being on a grill/grill pan, something of the like. I digress. The sandwich was good. The ham was high quality and sliced thicker than a standard deli slice. The Brie cheese was melted and was a delicious. The honey mustard was strong and I should have asked it to be on the side. I would probably try something else next time. Clayton's is a Yarmouth staple and I highly recommend it if you haven't been. We didn't get dessert, but now that we have left - I wish I had. Ok, I made it. I'm a seasoned regular :) Love love LOVE this place. Very affordable, various breakfast and lunch options, options to dine in or take to go. I love their egg and cheese breakfast wrap, I add Tabasco, onions, and peppers and substitute cheddar cheese. Lunch tends to be either their special chicken salad sandwich or Turkey BLT with mozzarella, but I'm trying to force myself to try other things. It's just so hard to deviate when you have your favorites! Speaking of favorite...honey cinnamon latte...I'm obsessed. I am torn on this review. Clayton's has great sandwiches and the butternut squash soup is Amazing! Great coffee and desserts. There is indoor seating and outdoor tables with chairs and picnic tables. This place was always busy but now they get totally slammed at lunch. This is a very popular place for young, old, working and retired. I suspect online ordering is now a very big part of their business so stopping in for lunch and ordering in-person leads to a very long wait, even at 11:30am. They have lots of staff working which is really good to see. I am happy they seem to be doing well. So for me the food is very good but the wait time is too much for a sandwich. Clayton's has always been a staple for me. Such a nice place to go. Bakery and cafe. They have made to order drinks, bakery items, soups, and sandwiches. The service is quick and friendly. You can give them your name and/or number and you'll be called out and texted when your order is ready. I got the turkey sandwich and a caramel latte. The prices are great and affordable. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (weather permitting). The inside is cozy and filled with sellable artwork from local artists. This is a welcoming place. Right near NYA so lots of students can walk in and grab breakfast or lunch. I have always had a great experience here and definitely recommend it! read more

This was our morning stop for a coffee/chai and breakfast sandwiches. It was surprisingly busy for an early morning Tuesday but the place is much larger than you'd expect. Especially with all the available seating including all of it outdoors. They had multiple registrars open so minimal wait for ordering. Drinks came out quickly and both seasonal drinks we got were fantastic. They had around 5 or 6 fall drink specials and every one of them sounded very good. The food took quite awhile longer and both our sandwiches were more burnt and charred than I would have expected. The lemon mayo you can get on them was the highlight for sure, do not skip out on it! My wife got her sandwich on English muffin and I got mine on their sourdough. Overall a decent cafe spot for drinks and food but I'd return to some other spots before this one. read more

Went here for breakfast. It seems more of a meeting spot than a cafe. I mean, they have a menu obviously, but for breakfast it is only breakfast sandwiches and bakery items. A lot of people were there chatting when we arrived and when we left, nursing coffee, so it is like Starbucks that way. With not much sitting and tables on top of each other, it is, like I say, more of a meeting spot. The sandwich was good as far as that goes. The variety was in what you can have in it and what bread you want it on. You order at the counter and use their self-service carafes for basic coffees, like at a gas station convenience store. They have take-home only lunch/dinner items like meat loaf available also. If you are fine with the limited menu (though of high quality) and sitting on top of other people and maybe waiting for a table, I recommend it. read more

I use to go here all the time when I worked next door. I haven't got a chance to come in since the new ownership a year ago and decided to try it out today. Unfortunately, something got lost in translation. There have been a few updates made to the store. Including the seating. There is now a lot more seating outside. Which is nice, as they were quite busy. I ordered a cup of clam/haddock chowder and a curry chicken salad sandwich. Total was $20. Which is pretty much the same as it was before. They mentioned it would be about 20 minutes, but it was about 10. Quick service a plus. When I got home with my food I finally got to check it out. The sandwich (Curry Chicken Salad) is REALLY small. (Photo included). It was smaller than my hand. For $12, that's really crazy. I'd rather have paid more to get an actual sandwich than get "shrinkflation". The sandwich was also okay, but was pretty bland. Barely any curry flavor, at all. Now the chowder. I LOVED there soups. Always so fresh and so good. This was not that. It clearly spoiled at some point. The chowder itself was split, and it smelled and tasted sour. Working for restaurants all my life, I can quickly tell when a soup has spoiled. It was really bad. I loved this location a lot. It was a go to for me. Unfortunately, with the new ownership must have come some big changes in how they make their food; as it's very small portions, bland, and in some cases, spoiled. We went to Clayton's for sandwiches on a busy Saturday afternoon, about an hour before they were closing. We ordered two wraps: the veggies and cheese and the hummus wrap, and two coffees. The woman at the counter asked if we had ever been there and then explained how the self service coffee worked, which was appreciated. We each helped ourselves a cup of the Coffee By Design "Clayton's Blend" and sat down at a table and waited for our wraps. (They have fairly extensive coffee/tea bar but we happened to order the self service coffee.) The cafe itself is decorated with bright and cheerful paintings of Maine cottages and such, painted by a local artist. We were delighted by the coffee--a medium roast coffee with a delicious almond flavor. Our wraps came out surprisingly quickly for how busy they were. The wraps were full of fresh vegetables, a bit of balsamic, and were also delicious. I wish we saved room for desserts, but we didn't. They had large freshly baked cookies, cupcakes, bars, etc, and a section of chocolates from Haven's. We commented on what a great experience it was (service, food, and bright, cute cafe) and decided that we would be back soon. read more

Claytons has always been a reliable choice when you just don't feel like cooking dinner or making lunch. Food is good and people are friendly. However, the last few times I've ordered I've noticed value is falling off. For example, I ordered an extra of guac to go with sandwich for $1.50. Certainly didn't expect an 8 oz container but what I got was a 0.5 oz container that was half full. Most other places a container that small would have been free. A $1.50 isn't going to break anyone's budget but it's enough that the portion is insulting. I don't think demand is inelastic for a good sandwich, the decrease in value may catch up with them. read more

This place is pricey and has really gone down hill! I ordered 1/2 of the turkey BLT and a cup of the lemon chicken orzo soup($11.50). The sandwich was supposed to be grilled, it was not. Very small portion as illustrated in the posted picture. The Borealis sourdough bread was stale and hard. One piece of turkey in the sandwich, and the bacon was fabricated, with a funky liquid smoke flavor. Not good! The soup was salty, over acidic, with only 2 pieces of chicken in it! What??? Super expensive and a disappointing dining experience. Save your money and go to Bruce's Burritos across the highway for a quality lunch! Not returning here!! read more

A nice little deli with two counters as you walk in the door. It must be a top draw in Yarmouth because the lot was packed with Mainer plates. I had a Roma sandwich which was more Italian than traveler. Hard salami, provolone, and lettuce on sourdough with a sundried tomato pesto spread. It was pretty great. Clayton's Home Cooking when you don't feel like cooking. Let me be clear, this is REALLY Great home cooking. Realizing some folks may not equate home cooking with quality :) LOL If you are eating in the restaurant they have many sandwiches and usually 6 soups to choose from. My favorite is the Clayton's chicken salad. It is HEARTY - Savory goodness. I could eat this straight out of the container if they let me. But, allow them to put it on quality bread! Sometimes they have When Pigs Fly bread. YUMMY! Please, be sure you know what you want before you get in line to order. They have menu boards but they also have a menu on the counter as well. There are many options to choose if you are looking to customize your sandwich. For those of us that are starving behind you, we do try to be patient, but please, be prepared - the staff appreciates it as well. The desserts look amazing, however, I usually (always) get a cookie for dessert. The some of our favorite cookies, molasses, chocolate chip and peanut butter. The To Go Menu- Oh my goodness! So many amazing options!!! Our favorites...any version of the mac and cheese they are selling. The meatloaf was fantastic. The lemon chicken, tangy, flavorful, tender and juicy - Wow was it great. The chicken cordon bleu - perfect - smokey, cheesy goodness. While the prices might shock some people - it is restaurant food to go. AND the servings are HUGE! I don't think I have eaten a full mac and cheese at once. Bonus - TWO Meals :) Staff - they are all very nice. They are helpful and quick to serve customers. One of the things that really impressed me was their response rate on Facebook Messenger. I knew I was going to be in the area right before they closed at 7pm and wanted to know what options they had for to go entrees. I asked if they could take a picture of the case for me...AND THEY DID! So great as was dinner that night. The parking lot is a bit awkward when "bigger" vehicles are parked there. The good news is that people don't stay too long, so people are coming and going frequently. In the nicer weather the patio in the back is a quaint spot to enjoy dessert or a quick lunch. The seating area is decent - there two main spots up on the landing and to the back of the restaurant, passed the counters. Not a lot of room in the waiting area - I typically just stand and drool at the dessert case, but don't block the entrance! :) I highly recommend Clayton's!! read more

Sadly, a miss today at Clayton's. We came at 2:30 for lunch right before close at 3pm. I ordered a Greek salad with steak and it left a lot to be desired. The portion was tiny and the steak was barely there. I asked for no tomatoes, but it was not honored. Salad was stuffed in a tiny to go container even though we were dining in. My Dad got a soup and a sandwich. The soup was butternut squash and it was yummy. His sandwich was pretty good, too. Service was slow because they were all cleaning up to go home. I left very hungry because of the portions. I'd like to give it another chance and hope it was just an off day. read more
