They have 3 scan devices attached to the cart (2 in front w white lights and 1 under the handle bar). You don't have to talk to any staff or go through lines unless you want to check out w a real live cashier. Otherwise you just walk out w your cart full of items and walk out and it gets charged through your Amazon cellphone app account once you scan it in when you arrive to the cart. You don't have to be an Amazon prime member at all. There are some really good sales and deals. So you can mix and match from other stores to see which items is will be the best deal for you here. For example, there was a 12 pack Barqs root beer (canned soda) for only $3.97. Typically something like this will cost about $6 to $7 dollars at most other stores. fruit and ice cream and frozens and vegetables and bakery items as well as buffet salad bar for only $7.99 a pound. Gave this store a second chance today, since I had an Amazon return that promised me a coupon to use there. First impression, I did my return, but no coupon appeared. Went shopping, and got food from the hot bar, and two Kevin frozen entrees on sale, plus a loaf of bread on sale. Checked out, and the guy gave me a free plastic bag with the logo--nice. Got to pay, using my Amazon account so that's a 5% saving. Got to car, and discovered bread was not on sale, brought it back to returns window, and that's when I notice QR codes for people doing returns, so I scanned one. Returned home, and hot food is okay. Nice flavours but cheese lasagna is so old, I cannot cut it with a fork, even after microwaving it. The cheese is so hard, I cannot chew it. I had to spit it out, to save myself. The Brussel sprouts are tough also, and chewy. The large meatball was good. I visited before lunch around 11 am, and they were just putting the Hot Bar out, so that means this stuff is from yesterday? By comparison, Pete's hot bar food is amazing. First time to an Amazon Fresh and it looks like Whole Foods with fewer cashiers. There was a security by the entrance where we scanned the In store code via the Amazon app. Roamed around and many shelves were empty. Lots of sensors on the ceiling and everything is sold per piece, like one lemon, one piece of banana, not one pound. There were 2 cashiers checking out folks. Fascinating. Truly fascinating. I scanned my Amazon prime app as I walked in. A woman took us through the steps and she was very helpful. The options were plentiful and I saw many Whole Foods products that I enjoy from home. You scan your app and then as you walk around the store, you can choose the items you want and multiple cameras Track what you've placed in your cart. My parents sometimes go to the location on 59, so they wanted to see how this one compared. I got a coupon in the mail for the grand opening so we went to check it out. One thing to know: you don't have to synch to your account and do the "walk out the door without talking to a clerk" thing. There's a separate gate to enter if you want to be a traditional shopper and check out at the register. My shopping experience started out pleasant in Naperville with a wonderful greeter who gave insider information about a QR coupon since I was returning an Amazon package and it was my first time shopping in-person. However, in self-checkout, there was much to be desired. All transactions were paid successfully and cleared then the kiosk went offline shortly after, and an attendant was needed. One purchase was paid with an EBT card (due to SEVERE IDENTITY THEFT that I'm enduring). The other, was paid with a personal debit card. The attendant was SO LOUD and sharing with the manager that the purchase was made with an EBT card. People began to look at her with a frown. I am OK with using my EBT card. This unfortunate phase will not last forever. However, it's THIS PART--- Maybe it did not "go through," as she assumed this and stated repeatedly. I assured her the second purchase could not be made if that initial purchase was not cleared. The manager had me call to ensure the transaction was cleared before he voided the transaction on the machine. It was cleared. Both transactions were cleared which means the goods were PAID IN FULL. So, why were the transactions voided, and why was the female attendant still stating the transaction was not cleared, as she was trying to escort me to a line for me to pay for these items AGAIN? You make your own inferences. NEVER have I had such a CRAZY experience such as this! They wanted me to go to the traditional checkout line and get charged again, but I had a better idea---I gave them all of my bagged goods and walked out of the store with THE BIGGEST SMILE as I shared that I will gladly give my business to Walmart, Whole Foods, or Meijer where I am treated with respect and dignity with or without an EBT card as I should. My toddler and I love to go on little excursions. A grand opening coupon got me interested in going to Amazon Fresh for some shopping. For some reason my Amazon app doesn't work when not on wifi, so I was not able to have the experience of walking out without "paying", so I was bummed about that. The staff there were super friendly in trying to help me figure it out, but it just wasn't meant to be. The store itself is pretty nice. It's not overly large (maybe about the size of an aldi?), which was nice for me and my toddler to truly see everything. I thought the prices were ok. Some items were on point with what I pay elsewhere, but I found some items a lot higher priced. Example: On point- bananas- you could get 2lbs for a dollar or 15 cents a piece. Off- a 6 pack of Dr. Pepper bottles for $5.49. Some areas of the store were a little bare, like in the bread area. When I left I got another coupon for $10 off $40 so I definitely would give it a try again if the coupons stay that good. I placed the same order later the same day. I noted that one item, a spice, showed up as more expensive than on the original order. I had the order delivered that evening, and it came OK. Seems that I had a different experience than most. I found most of my "mistakes" were due to not understanding what's going on. If you pull an item close to another item the sensors over your head can mis-scan, likewise if you return an item make sure you return it to the exact same place you originally found it. My biggest complaint is pricing but if you're a veteran shopper you won't get taken. The whole operation is genius and I liked how efficient the concept is. In and out quickly... On a separate day I opted out of Instacart and chose them and was delighted! The most intelligent packaging for delivery, all bags sealed and temperature protected, which is woefully absent with Instacart. I'm giving 4 stars cause my experiences have been positive and I'll take that over perfect any day. Give it a try and keep an open mind, and remember it's designed to be self sufficient so don't expect high caliber help! read more

The shopping experience is really different and they offer a lot of really good deals. The only downside is that some the basic items are wildly overpriced. For example, they had two flavors of Triscuit Thins, same size. One flavor was $2.56 (a great price) while the other, inexplicably, was over $7.50! A deodorant I get from Amazon.com was $2 more in the store. Why? A number of items were not competitively priced at all. It was weird see Dutch Farms butter for $6.99, while the same exact time is only $3.99 at all of the other local stores. It's as if they only used an algorithm to set prices, without finding out what competitors were doing. With pricing issues like these, Amazon Fresh will only be an occasional, special trip store, not the go to place for all of your shopping needs like they hoped. read more

My husband and I tried for the first time and really liked it!! While I can't wrap my head around how they got every item correct, I reviewed my receipt today and it was 100% accurrate. It was sort of like a sci-fi experience. The prices were really good! Better than whole foods and Marianos for sure (if you're a prime member). In a word FRIGID. I have never been in any store as cold as this one. My wife and I shopped here Labor Day and were shocked at the temperature of the store being so cold. I even asked several of the employees what the temperature was, but they didn't know. However, everyone of them were wearing coats and gloves. We were so cold we left after buying about 1/3 of our shopping list. Not many customers were in the store which may be testimony to the frigid temperature. I have found lately the produce has deteriorated, the meat section has closed, and the entire store smells of sewage. The shelves are never stocked. The staffs were not helpful most of the time and never can find anything. They would pretended to be helpful and checked their app to see if items are available. Even if the items are available in the back, they said they are not allow to bring it out until certain time. Their app didn't work. their paper bag can't hold weight and the cashier would keep stuffing them. Amazon is paying the Fresh management and staffs way too much money to do a lousy job and chit chat with each others all the time. The place is expensive and the selection are limited. Be very careful with their sales. They claim 20% off California rolls on Friday for prime members. However, if you get a spicy California roll or a crunchy California roll or a vegetable California roll, they will not give you the 20% discount. Very overpriced if you don't have a coupon. There have been some great coupons though. I usually use the traditional checkout but last time tried to use the "just walk out" and when I got the receipt 3 hours later there were 3 items in there that were never in my cart (or even picked up by me off of the shelf) so I won't be trying that again. Also their "sale" items seem to never actually be available on the shelves so this is annoying. I have gone 4 times this week trying to get the 3 pounds of ground beef that is supposed to be on sale - every time shelf is empty. Same thing with chicken breasts. Asked an employee he told me they only get a few a day and often the employees snatch up the sale items before they even go out on the floor. The quality of food is very good. Love the tamales.
