Look up "Wisconsin" in a the dictionary and you will find a picture of this friendly neighborhood tavern packed with happy locals all watching the game show channel and dining on the fish fry special. Found a spot at the bar and, after watching the classic Leinenkugel "starry night" sign put on its show and chatting wi the convivial barkeep about "Wisconsin winter weather", had the fish with two sides (salad and fries) and a Spotted Cow on tap. The food set the "pub grub" to a higher level. The panko-covered-fish and fries and generously-sized salad were great. Since the Amber is within walking distance from my apartment, I think I will be making it my Friday night go-to. read more

We used to bring visiting friends here, but we're rethinking that. Burgers weren't the thick, juicy patties of the past; they were thin & dry like a frozen patty. Fish fry fillets were hot & flavorful though. Portabella Fries were hot & flavorful. The worst part were the clouds of FRUIT FLIES that surrounded us the entire time. This is a 5 star rating for what this place is. A neighbor bar with a really long history. It has been a tavern since the 1880's. They have a grill and deep fryer behind the bar, not a separate kitchen... and they turn out great apps, 'Amber'gers, wraps amd sandwiches. They serve food until close. Thursday and Friday have a fish fry. Very quaint. I've been here a few times over the years and it never disappoints. Had the olive and Swiss amberger last night with a Bitburger beer. My wife had a bacon cheese burger. Love the tots! read more

Amber Inn serves one of the best bar burgers in town, along with good cheese curds and wings. How cool that they have actual German beer (Bitburger) on tap, along with some crafts and the usual macrobrewery fare. Give it a try, and be sure to read the history, as others have mentioned. My only grumble is when the TV is blaring 24-hour "news." Angry people shouting about politics destroys my appetite and the atmosphere. Went In to get the grilled chicken salad...the menu clearly states that there are eggs on it....got the salad, nope no eggs, drunk manager who almost fell down going into the bathroom said no discounts...really don't have it on your menu then...sent the salad back, husband had a bacon cheese burger with wedges definitely not a half pound burger anymore...he ate the whole burger and all of the wedges, and that has never happened, stup I'd bill came to 19 andso.e change for one burger with a side and one beer....nope never again... read more

Classic neighborhood bar and grill. Old school feel, but nice selection of beer and solid grill items. Lots of wood paneling and the walls are full of photos about the history of the building and its owners, the bar has been in operation since the late 1800s. The place is clean and inviting and all the staff were very friendly during our dinner. Got a couple of Spotted Cows and had a blue cheese burger with fries, all very good. One of my favorite burger joints in Eau Claire. Instead of hamburgers, they have 'Ambergurs' (not joking) Other than the kind of corny name, these burgers are delicious, and the bar has cribbage boards and Trivial Pursuit cards at each table to keep you entertained. They also have dishes and dishes of peanuts to keep the hunger from swelling. The prices are extremely reasonable, and the atmosphere is so classic Eau Claire, it would be a mistake not to check this place out read more

It can get a little crowded, but that's just because of the small building, not the large crowds. Friendly atmosphere, good service, amazing food. I ordered a burger, and it tasted fresh, even the bun looked fresh/locally made, no store bought stuff. They also seem to have a few unique beers on tap that most places don't have (some of the beers I've never even heard of). Will definitely be visiting again. read more

This place is the definition of appearances can be deceiving. It might not look like much but sit down for a peanut butter burger and a pint and you'll leave satisfied. I've been here many times both drunk and sober and the food is always good. I wasn't a fan of their fish (too breaded and peppery) but that's the only mediocre food I've had here. Their seasoned Jojo's are great, the deep-friend breadstick is killer, and again try the peanut butter burger or any of burgers. The bill is always lower than expected even with multiple drinks on. Speaking of drinks try out a root beer & crown whiskey as well, their on tap root beer is fantastic. The only downside is that you'll leave smelling like greasy burgers but I consider that worth it. read more

Nice place, great food. Cool bartender. Needed a place to grab lunch and catch a game on a road trip, and found this spot. It doesn't look like a million bucks on the outside, but I got inside I knew it was a good spot. The bartender was quirky and cool. Food: I had the cod platter with potato wedges and a side salad. The salad was exactly the iceberg in a bowl that you would figure, but it was fresh and I am a committed vegetable eater. The fish was really tasty and the potatoes were just fine. My friend got a cheeseburger and fries - both great. Very good value. The seats were comfortable, the space was clean, and the size is just right for a joint like this. It was great to see the game there, even though I think we may have been the only ones into it. I bet it's rousing when local teams are playing The only thing that was a bummer was that they opened the window to (I guess) let in some fresh air or vent the kitchen and it got pretty chilly. What crap service! The bartender "Stacy" was a complete bitch. She kept her back to us the entire time were there. We got fish fry take out from the Amber Inn last Friday and it was so exceptional! We love to support our fav local business from afar currently and oh boy was this a good choice! The fish was so perfectly breaded and fried, and SO delicious. If you're looking for a classic WI fish fry, this is the place. And don't even get me started on the sides! My partner got coleslaw and potato wedges which was super yummy. I got their potato salad and cottage cheese, both of which were amazing. They also included tartar sauce, ranch, and a perfectly buttery bread stick! I'm so glad one of our fav spots in Eau Claire was able to adjust to social distancing guidelines and allow guests to make the best choice for themselves. Under normal circumstances, the bar is so cozy and welcoming and we love to sit and have a drink, chat with the bartenders, and devour some cheese curds. We waited over an hour to get our food. It was busy but there were people who ordered after i did and got their food before i did. I ordered an appetizer and didnt get that before for the meal. I ordered chicken nuggets and paid 5 dollars for 6 chicken nuggets. Definitely will not be coming back here anytime. They need a better kitchen manager. They skip over orders. read more

I just left a fish fry at Amber Inn. I had ordered a salad, wedges and fish. The salad was good, as were the wedges. When I started eating the fish it tasted fishy to me. My friend who was with me experienced the same thing. I went up to the bar and happened to talk to the owner. He said he had NEVER heard this complaint before. I was taken aback as I didn't expect that response. The bartendress said she ate off the plate that I left and said the fish was delicious. The message to me was very condescending and that I truly didn't know what I was talking about. I certainly have no agenda and do not wish to bad mouth any local establishment, but my specialty is a good fish fry and this would be on the bottom of the list. Especially how they handled my complaint as if I was the only one in the universe who felt this way. read more
