Had a great evening celebrating our anniversary at Ambrosia. Our server was very knowledgeable and professional. He was happy to answer our questions and help us choose from all the delicious-sounding offerings of food and wine on their menu. We decided to first share an order of mussels; very nice portion and no empty shells! Also ordered the shrimp fettuccini special and a half-order of the ravioli with pesto cream sauce. It's not often you find a restaurant willing to serve half an order of pasta so I was very happy our server made that suggestion. Everything including the bread was awesome and we will most definitely return. It's obvious as to why this establishment has been in business for such a long time. read more

Called on Saturday for a curbside order. This was my first time ordering and I was really craving lasagna. Pickup went great. I loved the look of the lasagna. It was pretty. I love having both a cream and red sauce on the lasagna. It was good. Solid. But I'm not sure it's an $18 piece of lasagna. Maybe if it came with a salad I would feel more comfortable with spending that amount of money. Or if I were dining in and enjoying the ambiance as well. It was good. First of all, I just want to say that the food was delicious! So good and the staff were really nice and helpful. The overall look-and-feel of the place was very nice and I can definitely recommend. The downside was that we were seated next to some very rude people. They were dropping f-bombs left and right, cussing, talking politics and shouting. There were several points when I felt very uncomfortable. We eventually asked to move and the staff was very polite about it. The food here is fantastic! I was able to try a lot of different dishes during my visit, including their house bread, Grilled Artichoke appetizer, Beet Salad, Mista Salad, Linguine con Gamberi, Campesante, and of course a bottle of wine! Their house bread is perfectly soft and fluffy on the inside with a crispy crust on the outside. The olive oil served with it is fantastic as well. The Grilled Artichoke appetizer is so simple, yet the grill brings out such great flavor. The Beet and Mista Salads were fantastic as well - all of the flavors complemented each other perfectly. The Linguine con Gamberi was subtly spicy and subtly creamy, and the pasta and Gamberi were so fresh! My favorite by far was the Campesante. The flavor the scallops had was unbelievable and they were so tender they melted in your mouth. read more

Great Italian place in Sobro! Went there for dinner and enjoyed every bit of it! Some reviews mention that they have a parking lot in the back, which they do but it is shared with other businesses so when we arrived on a Friday night, it was already full. Luckily street parking is very easy in this area and we had no problem finding a spot. When we walked up to Ambrosia we had a hard time finding the enterance which may have been because it it winter but you need to go through the outdoor patio to get to it. We made a reservation but we had to wait a few minutes because our table wasn't quite ready. It was okay though because the staff was very kind and explained it would only be a few minutes. Once seated, we could tell it was very busy and loud so it wasn't a surprise that service was a bit slow. Our server made up for it though and the times she checked on us were very genuine and she took great care of us. We ended up getting the Torta (AMAZING for my goat cheese lovers), caprese salad (as one can imagine) and their grilled artichokes which were to die for. As a main we had the ravioli and it tasted like I was back in Italy. Dessert was the tiramisu and nothing beats this homemade treat. Highly enjoyable experience at Ambrosia. It was rather crowded for a Thursday night but we had made reservations (via Yelp!) and were seated promptly upon arriving. We ordered a couple classes of wine and calamari to start. The calamari took a bit of time but the waiter was apologetic for this. We then split the beat salad, plenty big to split between two ahead of a meal. I had a tough time choosing what to get with all the options. I went back and forth between items listed and the specials of the evening but settled on the veal picatta which I am ever so happy I did. The veal was cooked perfectly with a side of homemade pasta (normally comes with a meat sauce but I just did olive oil and garlic and ate the veal with the noodles - much better idea!) and my bf got the panna which was so deliciously creamy and had perfect flavors. Highlights include the herb infused olive oil with homemade bread to start and the tiramisu. I got a piece to go with intentions to share when we got home - but I'll be honest, I ate all but two bites (sorry Daniel!) It's a great Italian spot in SoBro. Would recommend! read more

I've been looking for good AUTHENTIC Italian for for over a year in Indy and am SO happy I found this place! First off, the atmosphere is ideal. Warm and intimate on the inside. Cute little bar to grab drinks before. And the patio is even better. I love that the restaurant thought ahead to install blinds to block the sun in the evening when the sun is going down. Little things like that go a long way for me. Half way through our dinner, they reopened them so that our view opened up to College. Yes it's a little loud with the cars going by but, that didn't bother us at all. We started with the tradition Bruschetta. It was a decent portion (4 or 5 pieces I think?) and very tasty. We followed it up by two pasta dishes ((mine was like a penne vodka with shrimp but can't remember the name!) They also were more than willing to swap out penne for spaghetti for me, which I was very appreciative of. My boyfriend got the medic pasta and LOVED it. He kept going on and on about the flavors in the sauce and devoured it in less than 10 minutes. Safe to safe, he liked it... We already can't wait to go back! Slow waitstaff, food was disappointing for the prices, and they messed up our drink orders. Online they said they had GF options but only the appetizers, salad, and soup were marked on whether they contained gluten. None of the entrees were marked and there was significant confusion btwn our waiter and the kitchen. Eventually found out only 4 pasta dishes could be made GF because their cheese sauces have flour in them!! Definitely appreciate that the manager brought us limoncello shots but that hardly makes up for the disappointing meal.... Even my non-GF partner was disappointed with the quality of his meal. On this visit we indulged in the Tartufo: Chocolate gelato, zabagline cream center (LOVED the center!), dusted in coco powder & roasted hazelnuts and Coppa Spagnola: Vanilla gelato with amerena cherry swirls topped with amarena cherries(these cherries were Soo delicious!). The Tartufo was my selection and to top it off I ordered the Chocolate Martini(China's, Baileys Irish Cream, Kahlua, Godiva). I have been a proud diner at Ambrosia for as long as I can remember. In fact, some of my earliest memories of dining out include being taken into the arms of "Mama Pizzi," one of the restaurant's founders, and being carried into the kitchen. Founded in 1979, Ambrosia is an Indianapolis mainstay for upscale Italian cuisine​. While it has moved from its original location, it is still housed in Broad Ripple. Despite the move and nearly 40 years of operation, the restaurant is still owned by the Pizzi family, and it has not lost an ounce of enthusiasm. Ambrosia serves authentic, high(er)-end Italian cuisine. In a world of places serving massive portions of spaghetti and meatballs and fettuccine​ Alfredo, this is not the type of restaurant where someone goes to "mangia mangia!" In other words, Ambrosia isn't a tacky eatery like the Olive Garden, and it isn't an American restaurant masquerading itself as Italian (like Buca di Beppo). Portion are medium sized, and pasta is served in a separate dish when paired with a meat entree. Ambrosia's menu is diverse in its offerings, and it will never disappoint​. To start, I highly recommend an order of calamari​ for the table. There's never a reason to skip the salad, and the mista and arugula are my preferences. For those in the mood for pasta, order the gnocchi. Being very heavy, it could be a meal on its own; it also serves as a great shared course prior to a healthy dose of meat. Life is far too short to be a vegetarian. Ambrosia has plenty of hearty dishes made from creatures that once roamed the land, sea, and air. I'm a lover of chicken parmesan, and Ambrosia's rendition is fantastic. I also recommend the chicken chiantigiana, as well the veals marsala and piccata. It would be an affront to nature not to end a meal at Ambrosia without dessert. The restaurant serves a variety of authentic gelatos​. Really, you must. Our family stopped in for dinner on a whim not knowing what to expect. While Ambrosia has been a Broad Ripple staple for years, we embarrassingly have not visited it yet. The staff was friendly, the decor was upscale but not pretentious, and the menu was filled with family recipes that they have been serving fir years. We started the meal with Caesar salad, minestrone and some risotto balls that were all deliciously prospered. The risotto was so good that we even ordered a second serving because all of us enjoyed them so much. For dinner we had a nice variety of ravioli, chicken parm and gnocchi. The chicken parm was well prepared and a generous portion. I found the garlic mash potatoes a little flavorless but otherwise a great meal (next time I will see about subbing out the potatoes for a side of pasta). The ravioli was perfect from a portion size and preparation and has become one of my wife's favorite dishes - an instant classic. The gnocchi was well prepared but the sauce was a little heavy but at this point we are talking about minor issues because ewe enjoyed it overall. I'm embarrassed that we had not visited Ambrosia before and I hope that you do not make the same mistake. Check this place out - it's worth the effort. read more

Being new to Indy we were looking for an Italian restaurant that would be our family's new favorite. Having heard good things about Ambrosia (great food, generous portions), and after seeing the online reviews, we were eager to try it. On a recent Sunday evening we placed a sizable order (five entree's) for carry -out. We all got something different so we could get the opportunity to try a variety of pasta dishes ( Linguine con Gamberi, Penne alla Medici, Spaghetti con Polpette, Tortellini alla Panna and Fettuccine Alfredo with Shrimp). Firstly, portion size was small. One member of our party who had eaten at the restaurant before asserted that portions were larger when he had eaten inside the restaurant in the past, so I don't know what's going on now. It definitely had us looking in the fridge for something else to fill out the meal. Secondly, entree's are accompanied by bread, which in our case amounted to four smallish pieces wrapped in foil (a small plastic condiment cup of oil was included). It was certainly not enough for five people and definitely NOT what we were anticipating from the reviews we had read. Overall, the taste of the food was good with the exception of the Fettuccine Alfredo which was rather oily and bland (as if the cream had split). I gave it 3 stars because everyone else liked their meal, they just felt like there was not enough of it to justify the price tag. I might try it once more for the "in restaurant" experience to see if it is any better, but this carry-out experience was a disappointment. read more

I purchased the family lasagna meal and wasn't thrilled with it. There wasn't much sauce or ricotta. It wasn't much more than meat packed into layers of lasagna. Pickup was an awkward experience. I didn't see any number to call for "curbside" pickup. You walk in the back, look right and see the kitchen. Look left, see bathrooms. Walk in a bit further feeling lost and realize your underdressed in your sweat pants and winter coat while everyone else in the restaurant is looking nice. The staff see you standing there looking confused and you ask where to pick up the food. Of course the answer is across the restaurant at the bar. So you walk through the restaurant and imagine that all the diners, dressed appropriately for the occasion, are glaring at you for ruining the ambiance. You then stand at the bar, a few feet away from someone trying to enjoy their meal, while you wait for the bartender to finish mixing a drink. In short, I'm not a fan of the lasagna and pickup is awkward...even a little embarrassing. read more

Ordered here for my birthday dinner. I really wanted Italian and I liked the idea of supporting local. I ordered the rustica while my fiancé ordered the medici. My meal (rustica) was incredible. It had a bit of a kick to it, which I like a lot! The to-go order cake with a side of bread and to-go olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The only bummer was the tiramisu was a little soggy. Exceptional food and service. Our waiter, Dave, was the best! It looked as if he was servicing every table in the restaurant but made sure we were taken care of! We ordered the special of the day which was lobster ravioli and one of the pasta dishes, Penne alla Medici. The meals were perfect size, not too much food but just enough. If you are feeling a somewhat fancy dinner with some Italian flare, Ambrosia is your top option in the Broad Ripple area. The pasta Bolognese is my go to order when trying out a new Italian restaurant. I think it give you a good idea of the food quality and flavor. The Bolognese here was very good as was the bread and olive oil they bring to the table. The wine prices and options seem a little high for this type of restaurant but the bottle we ordered was good. We came here as a result of Mamma Carollas having a two hour wait I'm glad we tried it it's a good back up and solid Italian restaurant. read more

My grandpa was down visiting from Chicago, so I suggested that the family (mom, dad, sister, grandpa) and I should go eat dinner here. Since, we are all Italian, it was an obvious yes for us all. After leaving here, it was clear that my family was obsessed with this place and it is now my new favorite place to eat in town. Everything from the food to the service was outstanding! Their atmosphere had a family style vibe, and they kept the lighting dimmed down a bit to create a dark and cozy mood. All the walls were covered with framed photos of the Pizzi family who founded the restaurant. Their restaurant is based off a principle that believes that the best food begins with love. And there really isn't anything more family style than a dinner made with love (and we were served with nothing but love!). As I looked around the restaurant, I noticed that they had coat hangers on the walls next to most of the tables- I thought this was a real cute touch. Also, as I glanced around I noticed that every table was clean. I honestly think it was one of the cleanest restaurants I have ever been in. Our table was next to the kitchen, which wasn't loud or distracting at all- no one at our table had to raise their voice to communicate with one another- this was highly appreciated by all of us!   Even though our hostess wasn't the most welcoming person, our waiter Drew certainly made up for it! Right as we sat down, he came over, greeted us, and introduced himself. He was extremely friendly, very polite, and knew the answers to all of our questions. I purposely made our table run out of water just to see how fast it would take Drew to notice, and he noticed almost instantly and brought us some more- it was quite comical. He was constantly checking up on us and refilling our bread basket and drinks. I also LOVED how NONE of the employees made us feel like we were being rushed out of there. This also showed me that this was a true Italian restaurant, because Italian culture is all about spending time with your family and that's exactly what they gave us! Now for the best part- il cibo!!! I had everyone order something different. We got our food within 24 minutes of ordering. My dad got the Lasagna- he said AND I QUOTE "this is the best lasagna in town". My mom ordered the Rustica, and my sister ordered the Gnocchi. My grandpa ordered the Ravioli della Mamma; this dish was insane, the cream sauce was very light and smooth- not heavy, filling, or over-powering at all! I ordered the Bolognese, which was to die for, I basically inhaled my dish.  Per Dolci, we ordered the Tiramisu and that nights special, Cream Cake with Pistchios. I am not lying when I say this, everything we ate tasted incredible. Seriously, this place serves true authentic Italian food and surrounds you in a warm Italian environment. I tasted everyone's food and about died from how good it was. I especially loved how each dish tasted like they had their own individual sauce, and they were all phenomenal. Most "Italian" restaurants use the same sauce for every dish, so I thought this was very unique and well... very Italian.     Loved loved loved this place! Can't wait to go back! read more

usually don't write reviews but with the incident I just experienced, I had to give a "1" because it doesn't allow you to give a "0" review but this is a "0" review and rightfully so.... I had scheduled my daughters 16 birthday dinner 2 weeks in advance for a party of 10 on a Saturday night and 48 hrs before, they called to let me know there was a mistake and they had double booked and they could not honor our reservation. I asked if there was anything they could do, perhaps another time, day, ANYTHING!! He said no and hung up. i.e. Try finding another place for a party of 10 on a Saturday night! This was the most unprofessional situation I have ever experienced and I will NEVER go back there again.
