It is not the best AMC location around but also clearly not the worst. It helps that is has 25 screens and usually does carry some older movies unlike other theaters. Let's say something that came out in April or even late March such as Project Hail Mary is still playing here while most other AMC places in NYC it is probably long gone. One major problem here is mostly the theaters are dirty most of the time. Maybe the cleaning crew is stretched thin to cover many different theaters or maybe they don't cover in certain areas like they should. The concessions are pretty good here, I never had an issue so far. read more

BE WARNED, THERE'S NO A/C AT THIS AMC LOCATION, AMC EMPIRE 25 (AT 42ND ST TIMES SQUARE). My husband and I were at AMC Empire 25 on Saturday, April 25, 2026. We bought concessions and settled into our seats but noticed it was quite warm. The movie had just started so we assumed it would get cooler soon, but it never did, making for a hot, uncomfortable viewing experience. Mind you, the A/C was working everywhere else: the lobby, hallways, bathrooms. You'd really have no idea the A/C didn't work in the theatres until you walked in and were seated. When we left the theatre we heard everyone in the hallways saying the same thing, how hot the theatres were. That's how so we knew it wasn't just our theatre. We went downstairs to find an employee and spoke to the staff member who scanned the tickets for entry. Get this: He told us it's a known issue that they've had for A MONTH. They knew but there's no signs when you enter the building so we could make an informed decision before buying tickets. We went all the way downstairs to the lobby and found someone named Michael who said he was the "manager." When we told him about the hot theatres he was unconscionably rude and dismissive. He said "You watched the movie so we won't give you a refund." He actually faulted us for our experience, said we should have left the theatre, searched for staff or come down the long escalators 4-5 floors to find him and inform him about an issue he is already WELL AWARE OF. Due to most of us buying tickets online or at the kiosks in the lobby, I think management has lost all customer facing sensibilities. This manager was so unconcerned we'd had a lousy viewing experience; his response was flippant and unacceptable. We didn't even want a refund (tickets were a gift), but it would have been acceptable to get a rain check or something so we could hopefully view the film again in better comfort when the A/C is fixed. We used to avoid this theatre like the plague. It was dirty, rundown, broken seats and a horrifyingly persistent bed bug problem. Then they renovated and it was beautiful, became our favourite theatre to visit. When there are known service issues like hot theatres/NO A/C there should be signs placed in the lobby so you can make an informed decision before buying tickets or to let you know you can ask for a refund if you bought tickets online. Even better, they should update their website and app with ongoing service issues. read more

Spacious theaters, not sure if all theaters have the slight recliners or if some have the full recliners, either way, seating is comfortable. Elevators available for persons with disabilities, or fear of heights, as the endless escalators can be a bit daunting for some. Comfortable enough to make you question life choices halfway through the previews. Got snacks that cost more than a car payment, but listen... when that butter hits, suddenly I'm financially irresponsible and proud. Crowd is pure Times Square chaos--tourists, locals, one guy who definitely snuck in a full meal. Respect. Overall: loud, crowded, slightly overpriced... and somehow still a solid spot to kick back, zone out, and pretend you're not checking your phone every 10 minutes. Everytime I come here there are disruptive people ruining the movie. There is no security or staff monitoring the auditoriums looking for this. During the whole movie people are just chatting away, like they're in their own living room, totally oblivious to how annoying they are. Other people are scrolling on their phones, or even snoring. Someone even took a phone call during a movie. One time, an old lady said "sush" to people who were being loud, and they responded by yelling threats of violence at her. Security should be checking the auditoriums, not just hiding in corners of the hallways. Nobody wants to get up to report the problem because they'll miss a big chunk of the movie to look around this giant building for an employee or security guard who's probably on a different floor and doesn't care anyway. We shouldn't have to miss 20 minutes of the movie to report this. The employees and security should be more visible, nearby, and checking auditoriums, readily available to handle complaints and take action about disruptive people. Something needs to change in a very big way, because sometimes I wish I never came here for a movie. read more

Nothing is really wrong with this theater, it's just a lot of escalators and stairs to get to once you arrive as others have said. We purchased tickets ahead of time and were scanned in on the bottom floor of the theater, then made the arduous climb upwards to our theater. The theater itself is a little worn down. It had been 10 years or so since I'd seen a movie here pre-pandemic, so it makes sense it's showing signs of wear. Popcorn was fresh though, the fountain soda was working. The people working here were generally in a good mood. Bathrooms were decently maintained. My assigned seat was available and the theater was mostly clean. The movie I saw was on the TOP floor, and there were SO MANY escalators to go up it got a little tiring. Also during the movie, you can feel the floor shake from the movie thats going on the floor below which made it pretty distracting. This movie theater improved since last year ! I think they replaced the old fabric seats with new leather rockers. I haven't seen them in a while and used to always dread coming here because I hated those really gross, stained, and dirty fabric seats. The nicest theaters here are definitely the IMAX, Dolby, and PRIME ones. One of the escalators need to be repaired; noticed a wobbly step on the one that leads to the highest floor. It's also not as clean as the other AMCs, but I go here for movies that don't play at the other AMCs. Food is decent (though overpriced) and sometimes there's a long wait so I would only recommend getting food if you get here early. Trailers usually run for 30 minutes. read more

Unfortunately this theater gets some movies that the other AMC locations don't and I begrudgingly go here. This is basically the Wild Wild West of movie theaters because the most out of pocket audience members will go here in the afternoon or evening. To the two different women who talked on their phones during the Casper anniversary rerelease and ignored the pleas of people to shut up, you truly are entitled. I find in general it's fine if you go in the early morning, which is typically my preference before a Broadway matinee. Not all the theaters are recliners and some have the terrible club rockers, so keep that in mind if picking it over the Lincoln Square or the one by Penn. The employees are all kind and helpful and attentive. I especially like the elevator operator employees because it makes it feel very old school. There's also tons of bathrooms so I never had to wait. I did find it odd that an employee gave me a hard time about my reusable water bottle. I was clearly coming from work and I feel like everyone has a reusable water bottle now? I don't know if he was on a weird power trip or what but he tried to act like he was doing me a favor by letting it slide. I showed him it was just water and I wasn't sneaking any food in. read more

I've always avoided coming to this particular AMC. I'm a native NY'er so venturing into the Times Square area is never on my to-do list. I came here begrudgingly a few weeks ago because they were having a Q&A for an independent movie that wasnt showing anywhere else. Well, turns out this place is really nice! Pretty much any subway can take you here so getting here isn't a problem. The lobby has kiosks where you can buy your tickets. Just download the AMC app to bypass that. After that you have to go up a couple of escalators. This is the BIGGEST movie theater that I've ever been to. I'm sure everyone gets lost at some point while there! It reminds me of an old hotel as I was going up the initial 3 escalators. After you get off them you are hit with the concessions and ticket scanner. Prices for concessions are a bit crazy, but you're in NYC so I'm not surprised. After that it's up another escalator! If you're in theaters 12 and up, you have to go up more! I've been in theaters 10 and 11 here. I preferred 10 since seat E8 is sequestered in the corner with no one around you. That's my kind of seat! Sound and picture are great in both theaters. 11 is bigger. Both only have rockers, not recliners. Bathrooms are plenty and did their job. First time I came here I totally got lost leaving the place. I took an elevator towards the back down to exit. I got very confused because I would up in the lobby of Dave and Busters. ‍ Didn't know that was going to happen but it prepared me for my next venture here. The ticket scanners weren't the friendliest, but everyone else was. Will I be back? Sure. I had an image of this place in my head that it totally wasn't. Glad I gave it a chance. read more

In a post-Covid world, movie theaters are either empty for original and creative endeavors (aside from Sinners this year) or filled with obnoxious moviegoers who have no etiquette and effortlessly try to ruin it for the rest of us. But for those who love cinema and theaters that hold cinema, AMC Time Square has made tremendous improvements to the seats to improve comfort, great sound quality with Dolby auditoriums, and excellent fake IMAX (lie-MAX) for those high production features. As a cinephile who has walked past this theater on every NYC and longed to see the inside of it, we decided to catch a late night movie on this trip to the city. It's definitely a unique experience, a labyrinth of escalators (I think 4?) just to get to the actual lobby. We saw 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in the Dolby theater. The sound and screen quality were great, but I wish we would've sat a bit closer since the seats are way further back than I thought they would be. There's also zero room between the recliners and the walls dividing each row, so we had to sit our chairs back up anytime anyone needed to get past us. The audience was just as bad as a typical one back home in St. Louis- I can't believe people pay $30 to see a movie in NY and still show up 15 minutes late (and after 30 minutes of trailers???) and talk through the whole thing. All that being said, it was a fun time even if I will most likely never visit this theater again. read more

When I visited, one escalator seems broken and not functional for a while. The food and drink service and ticket check-in are located on the third floor, and I have to say the structure is very confusing for entry and exit. Went to see Sinners. I haven't been to this theater in probably a year. The theater our movie was playing in did not have reclining seats. The sound was fine but just be aware of where you get seats bc we were right by the speakers. They have a lot of drink options from beer to wine to cocktails and you can order snacks and food before getting to the theatre. Your best bet is order tix, drinks, food on the app so you do not spend time waiting on lines. read more

Such a large theater and that sound system - just wow! And very comfortable recliners. The other smaller theaters do not have recliners but I like the seats , comfortable as well. The theaters are always clean when I have gone. They also have special engagements and this particular time I went there happened to be a screening of a beautifully filmed movie, Day Of The Fight . Many people put this theater down due to its proximity to Times Square, but it's really not bad. There's 25 rooms, so plenty of films to choose from. They often have a lot of small independent films which you can't find anywhere else. They have a large IMAX I love to come to if I'm not going up to Lincoln Square. The Dolby and Prime rooms are great as well. From what I recall there was one other large Laser room which is not those specialty rooms I mentioned above. The rest of the rooms are rather small and have odd seating designs. If you're gonna see a big release best to go IMAX, Dolby, or Prime, otherwise go to another theater because it's gonna be a small screen (unless you stumble upon that one random Laser room). It's a huge building spread across six floors I believe. Plenty of restrooms. Refreshments moves quick. Overall it's clean. I've been many times and never gotten bedbugs which is the running joke about this place. They currently are advertising that new seats are coming soon! One thing to note is give yourself plenty of time when coming here because you may have to go up 5 escalators to get to your room. And one last cool thing to note is the main entrance is a former Broadway theater, so make sure to look around when you walk into the building on the ground floor. read more

You can take the escalators up but have to take elevator down and theatre 9 is on the fourth floor for example so it's a little confusing but just follow the signs. Then, tonight, I sat down to the 9:30PM showing of Toxic Avenger, and saw a mouse or rat scurrying around while the lights were still up. Also, the theater hadn't been cleaned since the previous showing: there was trash in the cup holders. i set out for what i thought would be a calm, cultured matinee with my friends. first red flag: the movie is on the literal top floor. not like "oh a couple escalators up", i mean we are ascending into the heavens. five escalators deep. by the fourth one i'm lightheaded, by the fifth i'm questioning if we're about to meet god or watch a movie. and then, of course, the final escalator is just... dead. like fully out of commission. no problem, we pivot. elevator time. except these elevators take an eternity to arrive. so we pivot again. stairs. this is where things take a turn. we enter the stairwell, feeling resourceful, independent, brave. and then every single door is locked. every. single. one. so now we are just... stuck. in a stairwell. with a very polite chinese family and two teenage girls. fifteen minutes go by. tensions are rising. alliances are forming. after banging on every door we could find, one finally opens and we are released back into society. at this point, i should have left. any reasonable person would have left. but no, i press on. me and my newly formed group of amc time square stairwell survivors cannot locate a single functioning escalator. so what do we do? we run up an escalator that is very clearly going down. like salmon. like a trauma-bonded crew with nothing left to lose. we finally make it into the theater, disheveled, spiritually altered, only to realize my friends and i have accidentally purchased front row seats. non-reclining front row seats. my neck is at a 90-degree angle. i am in pain. i am seeing god again. and then, as if the universe wanted to really drive the message home, on the way back i got hit by a car. so yeah. i will not be returning. this place is not a movie theater, it is a psychological experiment made to destroy u from the inside out. read more

I usually come here to see advance screenings. It gets crazy. This time we paid for tix, sat in a small near empty theater and enjoyed cushy chairs. We had a lovely time. Staff was friendly and snacks were good. Best part, the sunlight coming in through the tall upstairs lobby windows was heavenly! I came with my family and friends to see the Taylor Swift Movie. I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never been to a Taylor Swift concert, and it was honestly exciting. While there I purchased a large soda at the concession stand. This theater didn't have any clear signs as to where the theater was for the movie so we got lost along with other moviegoers. That's why I gave this theater four stars instead of five. This was also the theater without the comfortable seats, but I didn't notice because the movie was great and I was on the edge of my seat singing along the entire time. The experience was really fun and I do like this theater, despite the fact that they didn't upgrade their seats and it seems like they aren't utilizing all of their theaters or floors. The top floors seemed bare, desolate, and abandoned. It was honestly kind of creepy. read more

The theater is conveniently located in the center of Time Square. Ita directly across the street from BVQs a popular, decent, and affordable restauran, with good food and drinks. The theater itself is decent, but there are no more customer service reps/ ticket sale agents. Tickets must be purchased online from the website or from a lobby kiosk machine. Theaters and concession stand relocated up the escalators. Concession stand was decent, but might be costly to some. The line can get long, but seems to move quickly. The bathrooms are decent and appeared up be clean for the most part; at least the day I attended. Theaters are decent. Sound quality wa good, and was pretty clean. My main issue with this theater is that no one answers the telephone. Its just ringing, followed by nonstop automated messages. My mom left her phone either in the theater we were in or the bathroom following the movie. It was the last show of the evening. We were in the subway right down the block when she realized that she didn't have her phone. We went back, but weren't able to get back in because msin entrance was closed. I attempted to call theater the next morning and afternoon and was unable to speak to an actual human being working there. It so annoying because I'm old-school 70s baby, who grew up innthe 80s and 90s I remember and miss being able to call a theater and speak to a person. I wanted to know if my mom's phone had been found by an employee improvement theater patron, before taking a trip to Manhattan from Brooklyn. read more

First time coming to the theater and the last time. Not only were the facilities dirty but there was a weird smell in auditorium number five. I went to watch the Kill Bill Double feature and at the literal almost ending of the movie they turned the lights on and have us evacuate. Like I've seen this movie before but there was a good solid like 20 to 30 minutes more plus the new footage that we had just all sat through almost 4.5 hours of. I love the movie. I'll definitely be seeing it again but not at this theater. Worst movie experience ever. Came here to watch a Terrifier 2 and 3 double feature this week and left feeling somewhat disappointed? I got there a bit early and was waiting outside for my friend. A homeless person (probably on some substance) aggressively approached me and threatened to break my neck. I just simply went inside in which he followed screaming threats to which security did nothing about and didn't ask how I was doing when he left. After my friend arrived, we found it super hard to navigate and find our theater. We had less than 10 minutes for intermission which caused us to miss part of the second film because of bathroom lines. We accidentally took the wrong exit that didn't have an escalator going down so when we tried to circle back to find the correct escalator down to the exit, the staff gave us a hard time because our movies ended and didn't "know why" we needed to re-enter the theater. read more
