This AMC theater is in dire need of a remodel! While every other AMC theater I've been to in NJ and PA has upgraded to power leather recliner seats (sometimes they're heated seats like at the Philadelphia Fashion District Mall AMC!) this tired old theater is unchanged and hasn't changed since it was first built in 2006. All of the seats are dirty and worn out after almost 2 decades of wear and tear. I suppose it doesn't matter to anyone who lives in the area and is shopping at Rockaway Townsquare. This location thrives based on its convenient location. If you don't mind going another 9 miles or so the AMC Headquarters in downtown Morristown is better in almost every way. At least this location does have some arcade games to occupy your time if you're waiting for your movie to start. Also, they could use a Macguffins bar and a dine in theater menu offering. read more

You get charged a LOT more for Dolby. I've seen 3 movies in the last 2 weeks. The restrooms on the Dolby side of the theater are blocked off, so you have to run clear past the concessions etc. to use the rest room and then run back. The one worker said once they clean the restrooms for the night they block it off. In that case close the other side!!! I don't want to miss that much movie read more

I've never been to a movie theater like this. They have a huge bathroom but most of the stalls are dirty like no one is there cleaning properly. That was my first impression. My second impression is lack of efficiency. I had bought advance tickets for a showing of special foreign film (showing only four dates this year). The audio didn't play and so they said they would fix it within 5 minutes.. but at least 30 minutes of tech issue "fixing" passed before they gave movie vouchers instead and did not offer refunds. So easy! You can buy tickets and choose your seats via app or website beforehand, then roll in without any worries. You can bypass the line and show your tickets to staff before going to the right theater. Then, did someone say ICEE? They have 2 ICEE machines that usually have cherry, blueberry, and Coke flavors that you can layer. Their theaters are room temperature so no additional clothing needed. Their stadium seats don't recline but they're pretty comfortable and the armrests have cup holders. Along with movies starting as early as 11am and as late as 10pm, everything's pretty convenient here. I have no choice but to give this one star. The place is filthy dirty and no one is cleaning it. There are a lot of people. I understand it's a holiday weekend but they just are not moving people efficiently through here. The line to get in was Long. The line for popcorn was Even longer. Then once you get to order popcorn you are told it's a 15 minute wait and you Have to get in yet another line. I don't understand whether it's lack of staff or finance,but the theatre premisses seem very unclean and even filthy at times (f.e. Ladies restroom,mold around sink and scattered toilet paper). The seats in hall 8 were dusty and even had spidernets. My skin was itching throughout the movie and I found some tiny bites on my hands (bedbugs??),so first we did after coming home from the movie was taking a shower and making laundry of the clothes we wore. This place SUCKS!!!! I would rate it at a ZERO if I could!!! in the old days you used to just walk in pay for a ticket and see the movie. But NOW you have to go to a machine, insert your money and it spits out a debit card. Then you have to take the debit card and go to another machine and insert it and pick the movie you want, and then it spits out the ticket .Then if you want snacks, they don't take cash anymore!!! You have to go back and put money on a NEW card so you can go to the snack area and buy snacks. If you have money left over on your card; You can't insert your card and ADD more money to it you have to get it a NEW card!!! If you go there a few times and have money left over on a few cards you CANNOT use the 2-3 cards you have, so you're Shit Out of Luck!!!. It's as if they are doing Everything to Avoid the customers!!! You HAVE to buy a New card!! I asked one of the Hard To Find Employees about it, and he said they are working on it. What the Hell does that mean???? It means they don't have a Clue as what to do!!! The seats are uncomfortable & Do Not Adjust at All!! I will NEVER EVER go to the AMC theater in Rockaway AGAIN!!! I wish there was a 1-800 # where I could Bitch & Complain but there's NOT!!! And on the receipt no website is given. Ever since I got MoviePass, I have been going to this theater at least 3 times a week. The location is incredibly convenient (less than a mile away), and the parking is plentiful. Of course the food and candy are overpriced, but if you're smart, you eat before you come to watch a movie. You also join AMC Stubs to get rewarded with free food and a large popcorn/large drink on your birthday! This theater is pretty basic, nothing fancy. The chairs are not very comfortable, and whenever I go, the floors are super sticky and filled with popcorn. Most of the employees aren't super thrilled to be there it seems. All in all, this theater gets the deed none. I am still able to enjoy a film despite some of the negative attributes of this theater. I will continue to come here multiple times a week due to convenience and ease of access. Disclaimer: I am also from Texas where the AMCs are much nicer and modern, so I think I have higher standards. As far as NJ goes, this theater could actually be pretty damn good. read more

But when the previews started I could feel the air coming up. Been a while since needed to remove my jacket seeing a movie. The cashier was very friendly. I bought 6 tickets for Avatar 2 in IMAX last Saturday. My party came from all over northern NJ. AMC 16 Rockaway canceled the showing without informing anyone. We all arrived at the theater to find that we didn't have a movie to see. I later received an email stating that I had been issued a refund, but too little, too late. I went to the AMC 16 web sight and corporate sights to file a complaint, but the only options were via posting to Facebook and twitter. They state that you can email them, but don't give you an email address anywhere on the sight. I eventually found a phone number, but when I called, I got a recording stating that they don't provide phone service, but referred me to the website to "fill out a form". I went to the provided URL for the form, but it took me back to the same page that only mentions FB and Twitter. My local BowTie theater is looking pretty good for future viewing. read more

I don't go to the movies all that often anymore, but when I do I prefer this AMC in Rockaway. It still feels newer even though it isn't, and it is nice and big with stadium seating. Relatively clean is always a nice bonus as well. It's also bonus that they show movies from phantom events, showing some of the old classic movies. Since my 2011 review, much has changed. It's still big, newish and shiny but few updates since then. Parking is a problem, they don't have enough staff to accommodate really busy nights and the line goes out the door both for ticket purchases and simply scanning in a QC code. The food is better but it takes forever and the AList line is never honored with special treatment. We pay for it since we have a little one who loves the movies. They have reserved seating but NO recliners in any of their theaters. There is no dine in. You have to wait even for the AMC pre order of food like 10-15 minutes, that defeats the purpose. Overall, it's become the last resort theater locally, as we choose AMC Headquarters and West Orange over them almost every time. read more

My visit to AMC Rockaway left me feeling pretty torn. On one hand, my experience was close to perfect. But I just don't know if I can justify spending nearly $40 bucks on a movie for two people (not including food or drinks). What happened to the good old days when you could see a movie for under $10 bucks?! Pricing aside..... AMC Rockaway has all the updates and new technology you'd hope for at a movie theatre. It has those fancy little kiosks where you can purchase movie tickets yourself. Unfortunately, we had a couple of issues with our kiosk and ended up purchasing our tickets from the employee but that's besides the point. The movie we decided to see was playing in the "Dolby cinema". Perhaps this is why our tickets were so freaking expensive!? Anyway, if you're like me, you might be wondering what Dolby cinema is. It means everything is bigger and better. The colors are brighter, the screen is bigger, the sound quality is better (and much louder). My favorite part? The leather reclining seats reverberate along with the movie. The seats are super comfy... the arm rest can be pulled up all the way and seating is more spread out so that you're not sitting on top of your neighbor. There is definitely ample room to spread out and get comfy. All in all - 4 out of 5 stars for a pretty good experience but with unjustifiably high prices. read more

This is an AMC theatre in Rockaway NJ. This is the newest one I've been to in NJ (from 2006: http://www.bigscreen.com/journal.php?id=354) and still, this one is fairly old and in need of rest room updates (moldy sinks, worn counter tops). A theater with probably over a half billion dollars in the ten years they've been around should definitely invest in the experience of it's 'donors'. You asked how I got to that number? Here we go: 3300 seat capacity x (avg.) $7 ticket x (avg.) 4 shows/day x 365 x 10 years = Voila! (adjust for inflation and changing ticket prices and +- 4 shows/day. I still do not like AMC as a corporation as I think they're concentrating too much on revenue (pushing stubs program and their benefits while neglecting fundamental customer experience things like cleanliness, enforcing quietness, and general upkeep of damaged fixtures). The only problem is that Regal is nowhere near me in NJ and for the NON indie films, I am stuck with you AMC. This location is however large, stadium theatres (Bridgewater, East Hanover are not) and have "large" uncluttered and newer feeling. Yes, the older locations scream crowded, 90's decor and run down. Until another theater mogul comes in, we're stuck together like an old couple that can't stand each other but tolerate one another. Unfortunately, I don't see another one coming in and the ones that have tried have also failed at bringing movie going to the old school feeling of quiet, clean, caring employees and a considerate experience. read more

My fiancé and I are A-List Members and have been since the program started. I've never left a review until today, but I felt I needed to because of the great service we just had tonight at the concession stand from a theater worker named Ryan. We haven't even started watching our movie yet and I am writing this review while the lights are on and previews are running. He was So kind to us and considerate, kinder than any concession worker we have met so far at Rockaway AMC and I have been coming here since I was a young child. We come multiple times a month and get concession stand snacks every time we visit. He was thoughtful and clear, made sure he asked us if we needed or wanted anything else--and asked us if we wanted a receipt which some workers here skip sometimes. I was just blown away when he said that tonight was his first day when we thanked him for his help. Great job, Ryan!! I hope we get to see you do great things for AMC. Seriously so professional and kind. We are very impressed. read more

Large, comfortable cinema with huge, handicap accessible theaters that have curved screens. When the AMC in Morristown made the controversial decision to fire the patron saint of moviegoers, "Mr. Eric ticket-taker guy Glover," AMC Rockaway 16 has become my movie theater of choice in Morris County. Generally speaking, I think all movie theaters are overpriced, especially the AMC group. However, they do have stellar concession stands, modern and comfortable clean theaters, and the location of this cinema can't be beat . The AMC is in the parking lot across from the Rockaway commons mall, and it is located near five guys, target, and a host of other great shopping destinations. I still think that it's a better investment to buy a nice TV at home and popcorn maker, but if you must go to theater, this one is a good one. read more

Bought tickets to the Mario movie a week ago for me and my son to see in IMAX on opening day. Bought a 4:45 showing. Got there about 4:25. There is nobody at the entrance checking tickets so we walked up to the snack counter. Big popcorn, 2 drinks, 2 candies and $38 later we walk to the auditorium to find it roped off. I asked at the ticket counter and they said the IMAX auditorium broke and they canceled the show. I got no notifications. They told me since it was Fandango there's nothing to be done and Fandango should refund me. As for the $38 for the snacks, 3 people all kinda looked at each other. They also told me to check my bank for a refund since they have no control over it. So they had plenty of control over issuing a ticket bought through Fandango last week, but can't undo it now. $80 for a 15 minute trip to get popcorn and nobody there seemed to care or even react. And this is for Mario on opening day. Now me, my popcorn, and a disappointed birthday boy are all home with Netflix. All they had to do was their job - notify me this morning or actually check tickets on the way in so I wouldn't have made it the candy counter, or PRETEND to care. I just hate the cost...and AMC Rockaway 16 is your very typical theater when it comes to pricing. The theater itself is great...16 theaters, great sound, clean, stadium seating, comfortable seats-all good. I only have two issues with this place-the first, as with ANY theater, are the snack prices. Come on, do I really need to take out a loan for a large popcorn, a box of candy, and two bottles of candy for my son and I? Costs more than the damn movie! Second, the people working the snack counter in this place would be moving backwards if they went any slower. It can't be that I ALWAYS get in the slowest line like at the supermarket, ALL the lines are slow. C'mon kid, it's popcorn and a drink... My husband and I chose the movie with the reclining seats . To our amazement, during the movie the seats vibrate and added a cool amusing to the movie ..i loved the sound system and the vibrating seats that,laid back. It was worth the $40 for 2 tickets . I give this place 3 stars because of the prices !! Wow! What has happened..INFLATION!!! I will go back only if I get a gift card ! You gotta love the new Rockaway theaters! It's about time we had some movie screens back at the Rockaway Mall. I love the set-up and flow of the theaters...a better set-up than the theaters in Parsippany (which, when they were first built were SO fantastic...now they seem really out-dated). When you first walk in there is a nice-size waiting area to the left and the ticket-buying line with about five registers on the right. You have to buy a ticket to progress further into the building, which includes all the 16 theaters, a great new concession stand, and a small arcade. The concession lines were a little too long...how hard it is to throw some popcorn in a bucket? But I think the kids working behind the counter were just a little overwhelmed by all the food options available and the fact that families buy a LOT of food. The people in front of me got 3 popcorns and 5 sodas plus some candy and nachos. The theaters are so nice and clean (which will change with time, I know), and the stadium seating and comfy seats are really nice! The screen where I saw my movie was relatively small compared to the screens I'm used to in New York City, but I wonder if they're all the same size or if there are larger theaters in the building... The parking lot always looks full, but don't be concerned...most of the theaters are probably only at half-attendance. I'm sure this is a huge teen hangout on the weekends...it's a really cool space. read more
