I've had ups and downs with American Airlines, just like most of them. Take it all with a grain of salt is all you can do. If I could give American Airlines negative stars, I would. This was the worst travel experience I've ever had. I purchased a first-class ticket for a red-eye flight and received none of the basic amenities I expected: no water, no blanket, no food, and no in-flight entertainment. Even the seat pouch was torn, and my phone fell through it. The situation became much worse when my trip was delayed by 15 hours. I was traveling to attend a wedding, but I ended up stranded at Austin Airport with no hotel accommodation, refund, or meaningful support from the airline. To even communicate wiht representatives we had to stand in line for 4 freaking hours. After waiting and dealing with the uncertainty, I was forced to cancel my trip altogether and return home, missing the wedding entirely. For the price I paid and the level of service I received, this experience was completely unacceptable. I would not recommend American Airlines based on this experience. read more

My family and I traveled using American Airlines. My husband booked our tickets online about two months in advance. We arrived at the airport and went to the kiosk to check-in and check our bags. The people working at the luggage check-in were friendly and patient. After going through security we waited at our gate. The people that worked at the gate were friendly. We handed them our boarding passes, they scanned them and we were allowed on the plane. It was fairly quick. The plane was clean. The seats were typical. They feel small but they are comfortable enough. There is a tray table on the seat in front of you that you can use, a place you can hang your phone on the seat in front of you, and a charger port that you can attach your charging cable to to continue charging your phone while in flight. The people that worked flying to our destination and flying back home were friendly and did their jobs well catering to everyone. Overall I had a positive experience with American Airlines. From the check-in to the flight they had very friendly staff. I just wish the seats were a little more spacious. read more

Currently, this airline sits at one and a half stars, which doesn't surprise me at all. We made our flight plans weeks in advance and while sitting at home the morning of the flight a text showed up concerning flight delays not pertaining to weather. This "flight crew" delay meant that we'd miss our connecting flight. After arriving at our gate, we spent the next half an hour standing in line to talk to a gate rep. We were booked on a much later connecting fight, putting us 4 hours past our original arrival time. For that inconvenience, we were given a $12 each meal voucher for airport food. All together that equates to about three slices of pizza and a drink. If the vouchers could've applied to alcoholic beverages, that might've bumped it up a notch. They get 1 star for getting us there eventually, the other star for not losing our bags. Keep in mind they also charge $50 when you check in a bag. read more

Delay after delay. Cancelations. Poorly maintained aircraft. We trusted american to get us to our vacation - that will NEVER happen again. They delayed our flight out of austin 3 hours causing us to miss our connection to Venice. I scrambled to work with the cruise line to make it to a later port, catch a later flight. That later flight was delayed over 3 hours - the plane had to return to the gate 3 times for water dripping in the cabin. Absolutely absurd. read more

The Austin-based American Airlines organization is pretty good. The counter agents to drop off bags with aren't always friendly, but I find them to be efficient. At the gate, the employees typically do a good job keeping us abreast of flight status and boarding times. Finally, the Austin-based fight crew has never been rude to me on a flight and my planes have been clean. read more

I used to be very loyal to America West Airlines out of Phoenix with a hub at one time in Columbus, Ohio. Then, it was US Airways flying across country, again from Phoenix, and I was getting upgraded regularly. Now, it's American Airlines that I frequent along with past America West Airlines and US Airways patrons. I find that similar to any other airline, customer service is often better than not, but there are always those few hiccups. With American Airlines, you can get someone on the phone, on a chat, on social media, or in person to assist, and with some respect on our part, we can often get what we need. I rarely have luggage issues though there was one time where my bag was broken, and American Airlines gave me a replacement bag while they had my original bag repaired. I find myself regularly flying in and out of the American Airlines gates at Phoenix Sky Harbor and frequenting hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Philadelphia, and Charlotte. I even make it out to Austin on occasion, as I make it there every few years to visit my sister. Often, my travels require a connecting flight, and my flights are more often than not on time and without delays on departing or arriving. With status, an American Airlines credit card, and membership in CLEAR and Global Entry, I do not pay for luggage, I receive priority luggage handling, I board early, I speed through security, I sometimes receive upgrades, and I access lounges. Traveling has become more of a hobby and habit at the same time, and using American Airlines as my regular go-to airlines, I accumulate miles quickly while also receiving status and Loyalty Point rewards. I have two travel premium credit cards: the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard offering complimentary Admirals Club access and the American Express Platinum card offering other lounge access along with travel credits along with complimentary CLEAR and Global Entry membership. I'm glad that Austin has an Admiral's Club that I can access when traveling home from Austin on American flights. Also, through T-Mobile, I receive free WiFi on American Airline flights. Through my American Airlines AAdvantage status, I get upgrades or free paid snacks and drinks on flights along with other benefits. To retain status each year, you need to earn Loyalty Point through flying, credit card spending, and promotions. You also can earn Loyalty point rewards after hitting 175,000 points, 250,000 points, and so on. While it is difficult to receive upgrades due to so many people at the Executive Platinum status tier, the benefits I do receive is worthwhile. I also have experienced technical issues on flights but not enough to cause me to abandon American Airlines, especially when every other airline has these same challenges. We had an unfortunate experience. I thought AA is always reliable company but today I felt like it is not. We used this airline for our honeymoon trip and they ruined it a day worth of our precious time. After boarding time announce, we all were in the airline and ready to leave but soon another announcement came and it was about maintenance issue etc because of that we all had to get off the airplane... couple hours of delays and that affected our connecting flight from LAX. Once the new itinerary came, our schedule was to go to LAX and spend whole freaking day! And getting a flight from the next day!!!.... Are you kidding me?!! We definitely didn't take that route but got another ticket from the United Airlines. We missed the activists of the day but we got to Maui and to the resort around 9 pm.... I'm writing to express my concern regarding a disappointing experience I had at the Priority Counter (#47) May 21st 2025 @ 6:10am at Austin-Bergstrom Airport. The representative in question was Vanessa, a shorter African American woman with short curly hair (I share this for clarity, as to no confusion about who I'm referring to). Although I was flying with American Airlines, I was directed to the "All" departures line for faster service. Once at the counter, the agent there found an issue with my ticket and instructed me to go to the American Airlines counter for assistance. I was then directed to a nearby line by a male rep and was third in line when Vanessa, from across the way at the Priority Counter, motioned for me to come over. There was initial confusion, as I wasn't next in line, but she insisted I approach her counter. From the moment I arrived, Vanessa's tone and demeanor were dismissive and unnecessarily hostile. As I began to explain my situation, she interrupted me, rolled her eyes, and spoke with a condescending tone. When I handed her my passport, she abruptly shoved it back and said, "You need to sign it--it hasn't even been signed," again with a tone that was unprofessional and unnecessarily harsh. When I tried to clarify why I was explaining my situation, she harshly said someone had already informed her--pointing to a woman I had never interacted with. It was clear there was some internal communication, but I was confused and simply trying to understand the process. I understand that anyone can have a tough day, but there's no excuse for treating a calm, respectful customer in such a rude and demeaning way. I left that interaction feeling disrespected and frustrated--especially when all I wanted was to resolve a ticket issue and continue my travels. I hope you will address this behavior appropriately. Customer-facing roles require patience and professionalism, and unfortunately, Vanessa demonstrated neither in this interaction. read more

DFW to MAD Spain Like most AA customers, we flew economy DFW to MAD recently. As a business traveler, I have used SWA from Austin more frequently. AA team members on both our trips were super. Flights were on time both ways. Ample food, beverages provided as well as a blanket and pillow, headphones and in flight entertainment. My only complaint is that seats are so crammed together, much more than domestic flights. I had to hold onto the seats ahead of me just to stand at an angle to exit the row for the restroom (we all did). Our connection to Austin from LOVE on SWA was spacious by comparison. My American Airlines experience out of Austin was a breeze. I checked in online, I paid for my bags ahead of time, and I used a kiosk to check in. I did need an attendant to help me verify something, so that did add a few minutes to my check-in process, but not too long. Within 15 minutes of getting to the airport I was through the TSA pre-check line, and on my way to the gate. read more

Grateful for direct flight from Austin to Philadelphia at affordable cost. Changing flights especially at large airports can be a challenge for persons with arthritis, bad knees and other health conditions. Being able to get a direct flight with a reputable airline is most helpful as well as valuable. Flights left a few minutes late; pilots made up the time in the air. Flight attendants were all nice, attentive and friendly in both flights. If you want to avoid the inconvenience of changing flights or long delays definitely consider using American Airlines you will not be disappointed. read more

Preferred check in staff standing doing nothing while one employee gate keeps the line to prevent customers from entering. Not sure why they have a "bouncer" there providing a poor experience. I am a priority customer and I was turned away for two reasons 1) there was no line in main--which is not true. I wouldn't have walked over to priority otherwise, and 2) my bag was already tagged. Neither of those matter to me. There are 4-5 employees going nothing and I am preferred so I should be able to get serviced there. It's a minor complaint but it did rub me the wrong way. AA already is a meh airline (other grievances not specific to this location), so I guess I should expect as much. read more

My wife and I flew with American Airlines round trip to Vegas. On our way there our flight was delayed couple of times due to the incoming flight. Thankfully we didn't get cancelled due to the ongoing airline crisis going on. Our flights to and from Vegas was still great. I liked how how the Boeing 737s now have updated seats where the seat in front of you can hold your phone or tablet in front of you so you don't have to have looked down on your lap while holding your device. Another good thing is you no longer have to power your phones anymore. You just put them on airplane mode now. LoL yeah it's been a long time since I last flown on a plane. Definitely bring your plug-in charger with you because on the bottom right in the seat in front of you there is a power outlet. They also have a USB port as well to charge your phone. They offer a 20 minute free WiFi with a quick ad, if not you can $15 for an hour or $19 for the unlimited option. You will use your AA Advantage account to login and pay. They had Digital payment options for payment. Which was awesome. read more

Had a great flight from Austin to charlotte. It was a little rocky in a short part, but then steady out again. I can't remember the plane, but it was an updated plane. I was very comfortable with only me and another person sitting with an empty seat between us. Was able to take a snooze for most of the flight. The second half of my flight from Charlotte to Portland Maine was just as good. Smooth flying, and an extra empty seat between me and another passenger. Was able to sleep on the plane as well. Both flights the flight attendants were very nice I had cookies and water. And they collected the trash at the end. Very satisfied with my trip. read more

Why one star review? Because of their poor business practice. My ticket was purchased by my client with my seat (my preferences) assignment (see confirmed pic) 16D & 18D and remember I stated "my ticket/seat was already paid for. When I checked in, observed my seat was now moved to 30C (not my preferences) and had to now pay again to have my seat moved to 10D. I made every attempt to move my seat back to the already paid 16D but was prompted to buy another seat, hand no dang choice. Now when I contacted AA via their chat, I was told numerous times that the second purchase I made was correct and no way for a refund. As I continued to chat with the csr I explained over and over that I already had my seat purchased and why would I have to purchase again to be closer as my preference and wait, why would you AA have me pay twice? I still don't understand why anyone would have to pay "TWICE", makes NO sense. After the back and forth chat conversation the csr finally decided to make a call to his supervisor and boy did I wait, about 25 minutes later the csr responded back with, please follow the link to the refund center and the conversation was then dropped. Now here we go again, I uploaded my ticket number, filled out the form as requested and waited 3 days later to be told that there would be no refund as my purchase of 10D was correct and NO refund. I sent via the email my original purchase 16D and have yet to hear back and no waiting on 14 days with no response, So American Airlines when are you going to have a answer and why would you charge me twice if my original seat was paid and move me to a seat wayyyy in the back. I thought paying for a seat up front was the reason why you charge more, and then you decide to put me in the rear. Wait are you trying to tell me that you can resell my seat, move me or anyone to a rear seat and have me pay twice? I'm still not completely understanding your policy. I'm assuming and having a passenger pay twice for a front seat is poor business practice and if I look into this more I will probably find that what you have done is illegal. For the record I do have 7 other flights planned this year and beginning next month I've definitely let my client know about your poor business practice and her being a celebrity she will not be happy. I booked a trip From Austin Tx to Antigua from July 27th 2024 to August 13th 2024. I got to Antigua without any issues. However, the return trip was a nightmare. Tropical Storm Ernesto passed to the south of the Island bringing high winds and driving rain. We were supposed to leave on August 13th, the flight was delayed and then cancelled. No issue there, weather happens. The issue came when per American Airlines instructions, I was asked to rebook. They then told me that the earliest I can leave the island is August 22nd! This was 9 days after I was scheduled to return. I told them they were crazy, I have a job and my son has to start school. Other airlines when they cancel a flight, they would add extra flights to help get out the passengers that are stranded not American Airlines. Please remember this is the aftermath of a tropical storm and everyone is trying to leave islands in the Caribbean and get back to their lives. I then told them to hold the flight on August 22nd but I would look for alternatives. Of course they told me there was nothing else that they could do. I decided to try to get to Puerto Rico where there are more flights. I tried to book a flight on American by cancelling my flight from Antigua on the 22nd of August and using that refund to pay for the flight from Puerto Rico back to Austin. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with American Airlines they said they could not apply the refund from Antigua to Austin to the flight I was trying to get on from Puerto Rico to Austin, because one flight was international (Antigua to Austin) and the flight from Puerto to Austin is a domestic flight. So I had to BUY another ticket from Puerto Rico to Austin, which cost me over 600 dollars. American Airlines making it Easy for their customers. So now I have to pay a Caribbean Airline 749 dollars to get to Puerto Rico from Antigua on Saturday August 17th . The first flight out was from Antigua to Tortola (British Virgin Islands) then another flight from Tortola to San Juan Puerto Rico. Again bad weather closed the Airport in Tortola and the airport in Puerto Rico. By the time I got to Puerto Rico, my American flight had left me behind. I then had to spend the night in Puerto Rico at a cost of 331 dollars. I got an American Airlines flight to Miami on Sunday August 18th from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before catching the 9:30 pm flight to Austin from Miami. This flight was delayed until 11pm which meant I got to Austin at 1am on Monday morning. My son had to get up later that day and go to school. As far as I'm concerned all of this could have been avoided is American Airlines had not simply abandoned their customers in the Caribbean. I bet if there CEO was on one of these Islands a plane would have been dispatched promptly. Instead I had to endure being 4 days late back to work, a two day saga at a cost of almost $2,000 dollars out of my own pocket. I expect some redress from American Airlines. What if I didn't have the money? Here are my costs. Intercaribbean Airlines to Puerto Rico: $749.00 One night at the Airport Hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico: $331.0 The $662.15 dollars out of pocket for the flight from San Juan to Austin - still waiting for a refund from the San Juan, Puerto Rico to Austin Texas flight. Parking for my time away: $345.00 which was almost $100.00 more than if I got back as originally scheduled. My total for this sequence of events is: $1,842.15 The feeling of abandonment and the lack of any alternative solution to get us back home in a timely manner will always stick in my memory. This was a nightmare for my son and I and at this point if I never have to fly on American Airlines again, I would be very happy. read more

We traveled with our baby this year, so we wanted extra leg room for infant in lap. We booked the seats behind first class which was an extra fee. When we arrived on board, they wouldn't let us keep our bags in front of us. There was a wall, and no seat to slide them under. So they said to put them in overhead storage which was completely full. So they luckily had a closet set the front of the plane. They put our bags in there, but now the entire trip I didn't have access to my baby's items. No diapers, wipes, headphones, or baby food. When we landed we picked up our bags (yay we found them at least) but they were bent, all missing wheels, scratched and even unzipped! They were all brand new before the flight. I flew American Airlines from LAX with a layover here and flew out to MSY and the flights in and out were good enough. The flight from Austin to MSY was ok, but the person sitting next to me either had his mask around his throat or just covering his mouth. He was a jerk to the flight attendant when she asked him if he was talking on his phone during the flight (he was but lied and said he was not). No employee asked him to wear his mask properly. I'm pretty sure she did her hair right out of that show (it made her about 2 foot taller)! And her attitude was just about a complete match... Then before I ever got on they said they were out of room for bags and that they were not gate checking! We had to check them to the destination. This flight was the worst I have experienced in 50 years since a friend got his pilot's license and I went up with him a week later. As for the landing Holy Shi#. I recently flew on AA. Picked my bags and went home. It was late, so upon unpacking the next day, I realized my soft suitcase looking like the leather had been melted. I called AA and they said I have to bring my bag back down so they can look see it in person. Luckily my daughter was flying out in a day, so I wouldn't need to make an unnecessary trip to the airport, spending 2-3 hours, tolls, additional parking expense, while dropping off my 14 old on her first flight. Unfortunately, the baggage office was closed when I went, so I went up to the ticket counter and showed them the bag. She immediately said 'oh, that was the belt'. So, I got a different number to call from her and the lady said I have to make the claim within 24 hours and it had now been 2 days. I told them what the person at the ticket counter said and they still declined my claim. I asked on three occasions to speak with a supervisor and nobody ever got back with me. It's an older bag, but it was my favorite Travel bag and they damaged it. Customer care from them has been horrible. I'll do my best to avoid AA and will try to carry on the plane whenever possible. I forgot whatever damaged my bag rubbed all the way through and marked up my sandal. It's obvious and clear they did this damage. read more

Incredibly poor communication and customer service! In today's day and age with instant communication, even with an incident of aircraft malfunction, there should be plans in place to remedy and correct the situation within a reasonable amount of time. From almost any airport in the country and airline could transmit a plane from one hub with a matter of 4 to 5 hours. it is unacceptable that an airline with known aircraft maintenance issues was unable to remedy a problem within an 8 to 12 hour period of time. Not to mention continually bumping the scheduled departure time without any significant communication or customer service associated with the delays. When asking simple questions, overall poor quality communication is all you can get from American Airlines personnel. Customer service resonates around every other service industry in the world, yet I am continually surprised by the lack of customer service and quality that exists in the airline industry. I expect problems to occur, but I simply ask for proper planning, logistical preparation, and accurate communication to occur in the state of the challenge. It should be reasonable to expect this from any professional organization. Especially a publicly traded one. read more

I never travel American Airlines but this time I had too due to the return flight. From the first word out of our stewardess' voice was so full of negative energy that it set the entire flight. Our entire first class was in shock how she spoke to everyone and scolded a mother trying to feed her two year old as we waited to taxi which was delayed 30 min due to technical errors. I was the 8th deer back in row 4 and when it came to me there were no more sandwiches. I was extremely disappointed to say the least. Especially w the price tag on first class I literally got one ginger ale. To top it all off when I arrived in my home city. I received a text that my luggage was still in N Carolina. I was like. I only brought one bag. How did Yal leave it. So when I went to baggage claim I spoke to a woman that pretty much said that it would arrive the next day @11:30 am and they would deliver. So I said I left my car keys in my bag to see if there was even a protocol for that type of disaster and they said. We can deliver the bags. Give me the address and it seemed as though if I didn't comply I would have had security called on me. And btw. A man that stood up for the woman being scolded by the stewardess earlier was escorted off the plane by 4 policemen. Yes, when our 30 min delayed plane finally arrived in the USA we were told that no one could stand bc they were waiting for airport security. So they ended up calling law enforcement bc he stood up for the mother. The entire experience was exhausting and needs to be noted for future training. read more
