We didn't know that our flight was located at the South terminal - but learned after going through the main Austin Airport terminal after going through TSA . After finding that out, our flight was delayed and the only way to get to the terminal was through the airline shuttle and they wouldn't pick us up until an hour and half before our new delayed flight time. So, we had no where to sit at for another hour and half and went back to the main Austin airport TSA to sit in a general area to relax and have access to food. I like that the Airport terminal is small, but TSA here was different than their main building. They had everyone remove their laptops and iPads/tablets which slowed down the lines because a lot of us assumed since their main building down the street had us keep it in our bags the same applied. They have a small little spot to purchase cold sandwiches, snacks, cocktails. Also, a taco truck outside which is cool and different. read more

The smallest terminal I have been to, but surprisingly pleased. Only one baggage claim and area to get picked up by ride share. There is also a shuttle that takes (approx 15 min ) to get to the main terminal if needed. While waiting for your flight , there is a mini cafe to order coffee and to go food or buy last minute souvenirs. Sorry not 2 gates - 3 gates! Honestly this terminal has kinda grown on me, I had TSA precheck and I've never waited longer than 5 mins to get to security. The bathroom is easily accessible because there's only one. There is still not enough seating when multiple flights are leaving around the same time, but you can usually find an individual chair among the crowd. It's nice that you can never end up far from your gate here because there are so few. Of note there is a LOT of construction going on here right now while they are working to expand the terminal, but that won't be for a few years. There are signs directing you to detour, but it's confusing and especially at night it would be easy to end up in the wrong lane to get to the pickup area. read more

The south terminal is small and approximately 15 minutes away from the main terminal by car. Two airlines, Frontier and Allegient, are based out of here. For both of our arrival and departing flights, we took the airport shuttle to leave and arrive at the south terminal. There were several shuttle buses waiting for passengers in our arrival flight. However, on our departing day, there was an ongoing winter storm so there were limited shuttle buses. We had to wait an hour for one to come pick us up. Luckily we had planned accordingly and therefore the long wait time did not delay us. There are two drink and food options at this terminal: De Nada Tacos, a food truck, and The Get Set, a snack shop with juice, alcohol, coffee, cold sandwiches, and personal pizzas. There was an ongoing winter storm so our flight was significantly delayed by three hours. My daughters and I managed to secure a few seats with a table and functional plug outlet. These are seemingly basic but it is very important with two restless kids with limited activity options outside of coloring sheets and screen time with a tablet. We tried the praline cold brew and pepperoni personal pizza. The praline cold brew was solid and smooth. The pizza is nothing to bring home about but it is a decent option for young children. read more

Certainly a problem with directions on how to get in there and where to park, but they have some staff to direct as possible. This is a very small terminal. Tiny but mighty! Seating is limited for two whole planes boarding at once, but not having to deal with full blown, international TSA screening is worth it. We only got there an hour early and had no trouble at all. Sure it's smaller and definitely has little food options, but I usually go on a full stomach, and love the fact that I rarely have to wait in lines, there is also a really really good taco truck outside that's usually open pretty early in the morning. I love that I can just show up and basically get right in line for security. Usually, there's literally like 2 to 3 people in line and then I go into my terminal and it's just the smallest area to wait at so there's no crazy lines or overwhelming screens! I believe only frontier and allegiance's fly out of the south terminal, but it truly does feel like its own private little area. read more

I wasn't aware this existed until I told a colleague I was flying Frontier and she told me it's not in the main airport. TSA was rude as always, but the terminal was extremely small and cramped for the slew of people flying out. Two flights were departing at essentially the same time and the staff kept *literally* yelling at people to sit down as they were only calling one flight to board at a time. Makes sense, except there wasn't really anywhere to sit, all seats were taken. People had no choice but to stand around. Booked a flight to Vegas last August. First time flying out of Austin in years. Was fully prepared to go to main airport. Found this is separate from main. Parking was decent (not covered). Simple walk to entrance of terminal. TSA/check in piece was not bad. Only issue is we walked to plane. Waited in sweltering heat to load about 10 mins. I mean overall, not bad. I flew into Austin from Atlanta for my connection flight back home to Indy for the Memorial Day weekend, and the terminal was ok. The selection of restaurants and shops was decent, but not that impressive. I was on a tight timeline to get to the next flight, so I did not spend a lot of time at the terminal. I genuinely was not aware that there was a south terminal at AUS. There's a first for everything, I guess! It was my first time flying with Allegiant (and tbh hopefully the last) and luckily I ordered the Uber straight to Allegiant instead of the general airport. A bit confusing if you don't know where you are going. The terminal itself is tiny. Only 2 gates, a bathroom, gift shop/bar, and little patio area where you can pretty much touch the planes next to you as you sip a beer. Kind of cool, but also weird. You also have to walk outside and onto the plane, since it is such a small terminal. Luckily, the weather was nice when I was there, but if not, you're out of luck. One good thing is that, since it is so small, there is virtually no TSA line. Check-in was also quick. read more

The lines for security is never a long line but still get here 2 hrs prior to boarding to prevent any delays. The waiting area is normally pretty packed. They have a small convenient store for cold items. Restrooms inside and outside of the security are available. Some seating area have charging stations but good luck in getting a seat. Tiny terminal, TSA takes forever because there's only one person for Pre Check and one for regular. Poor ventilation so the room (the terminal is literally a room) was like a swamp. There were no empty seats, inside or out, so I had to stand around and at 7 months pregnant it sucked. The shuttle to get to the actual airport is always full and hard to catch. What a weird little airport. It's completely separate from the main terminal, which I wasn't expecting. I shared an Uber with friends and after the driver dropped them off at the main terminal, I was in the car for another 10 minutes to get to the south terminal. The terminal itself is super cute. It's got a retro chic kinda vibe to it, like an airport out of mad men. They have 2 food options, a food truck out on the patio and a coffee/bar bar inside with snacks and sodas and things. The Wi-Fi works great, I accidentally got to the terminal 3.5 hours before my flight and watched a couple of movies on my laptop so it was a fun way to spend time. I cale here on my flight from Sarasota to Austin. I had no idea it even existed until I flew with Allegiant. When I arrived, I realized that this was a division of the airport dedicated to budget airlines, such as Frontier and Southwest. It's not connected at all to the main airport, Austin-Bergstrom International. In fact it's about a 15 min drive away. When I arrived there, it was pretty efficient. Getting through TSA went pretty quickly since there weren't as many people as the main airport. There's enough room for about 2/3 aircrafts to be scheduled at one time. We board and disembark outside. The inside of the building has modern decor and seating. There's a store to buy snacks and drinks. There aren't any restaurants, but the store provides sandwiches and other lunch items. There are 3 restrooms, one in arrivals, one in departures and one in the waiting area. The parking lot is small. Overnight park in at this location is over $20. However, there's a free shuttle that takes you to and from the main airport. Overall this part of the airport is easy to get to and worked well for me. read more

The South terminal is a small terminal about 5 miles from the large AUS airport. Frontier and Allegiant are the only airlines that regularly fly out of here. On-site park is a breeze and it feels like the days of yesteryear when folks would just show up to the terminal and walk up the ramp to their plane. It can get a little congested since there is only two gates but there is enough seating that I've never had to stand. They have both USB and regular outlets at most seats which is always a plus. There is a small concession area selling snacks, sodas, and basic alcoholic drinks. They also have a taco truck outside in the courtyard so you can get some hot food. The Barbacoa and egg breakfast taco was very tasty and just what I needed before my morning flight to Vegas. I like the ease and convenience of the South terminal and with the cheap fares to Las Vegas on Allegiant and Frontier it's becoming an old familiar friend. read more

If flying in or out of ABIA via Frontier or Allegiant airlines, you are going to do so through the South Terminal. You would assume it is right next door to the main terminals, so no big deal. And then you'll find out that, with no traffic, it is about a 20 minute shuttle between ABIA and the South terminal. Eek! This is tough if you are anxious to start your vacation, but have to get to the main airport to, say, pick up a rental car. On the other hand, if someone is just picking you up, or dropping you off, this is super convenient, and allows the avoidance of a busy airport. My experience was the former, so it was a bit of a bummer upon arrival to learn our adventure would be a bit delayed. On the other hand, I loved flying out of the South Terminal. We still had to go to ABIA first and take a shuttle, and while I can see this causing possible disaster at busy travel times, or if they are running behind, on this trip, everything worked seamlessly. Security was quick, and the airport is so small, that, when people leave items, even a pack of crackers, they will go over the intercom and announce it so patrons can return and retrieve their forgotten goods. There is a small shop with all the airport basics, along with some made in Texas specialties, like Lammes chocolates, local candles, and goodies from a nearby bakery. Your only restaurant option is a taco truck (there's a cute lil' bar, too!) located on their gorgeous outdoor patio. Again, I can understand why this might not always be great (hello 100+ degree days), but on my visit, it was sunny and 60-something outdoors. We all lounged on a large picnic table and reveled in the fresh air and rays of sunshine warming our faces. The courtyard is small, but I still circled it a few times for exercise, and what a vast improvement over wandering a standard drab terminal! Back to the taco truck, De Nada: We just shared chips and queso + two salsas, but it was fab! They prepared our order in like thirty seconds, the queso was warm, and the salsa verde was MAGIC. What a perfect, generously portioned pre-flight snack! Inside, they have 24 charging stations, standard airport seating, plus some super fun retro chairs and tables. It is a small space, and I can see the possibility for it filling up, but then again, there are only two gates, so I do not know how many flights could really be pending at the same time. If I returned to Austin and did not require a rental car, flying out of the south terminal is a no brainer. That lovely courtyard stole my heart, and was a great improvement over the standard airport experience. If I needed to get to ABIA for a rental car or connecting flight, it would give me pause, but I might still end up choosing a flight that utilizes this terminal. read more

Very few flights in and out so services are not good. Shuttles only run from rental car drop off at main terminal 2 hours before a flight leaves, and security also does not open until 2 hours before a flight. No point in being early. None of this is mentioned on the website. read more

This was the best terminal I've ever been in and I've flown a lot. When we first arrived we got dropped off in the middle of the parking lot so we had the wrong impression thought it was podunk. Well mostly my friend did I've had this experience before of being dropped off of the airline in the parking lot. But when we left it was the easiest check in through security I have ever had. They were quick and efficient and super friendly, which probably matters the most. Then yes it was small but they had beer and very comfortable seats to sit in the inside. While we thought about where we were going to sit and looking around we realized that they had an outdoor patio with music, a taco truck, and comfortable patio furniture. Honestly, could life get any better? Oh wait it dud there was a gentleman who is walking around with a bar cart that you could order your alcoholic beverage right there on the spot. How can you go wrong? And those tacos were delicious. I got just the carnita tacos because I didn't want the breakfast ones and I just ask for it without the eggs. Those tacos were so juicy and full of flavor man I could go back now. So the south terminal is not really part of the main terminal. You have to make sure that you tell your Uber driver that you're not just going to the airport but the south terminal. other than that this was the best experience flying I've had. I will come back to Austin just because their airport was so easy to get through and then comfortable for the hour wait. read more

It's my first time flying out of the South Terminal, and initially I didn't realize that it was separate from the main airport. Give yourself plenty of time to get to it. I ended up taking the shuttle from the main terminal to it, and I was surprised by how far away the two were. But once I got here, for a mid- morning weekday flight there was no line at TSA and it was easy. The lounge / waiting area has a comfortable and bright set up, with lots of outlets and a small shop. The surprising gem is the outdoor patio, with cold drinks and a taco truck. read more

Luggage claim hit or miss. No airline clubs/lounges. After flying through here a couple of times you'll learn the ropes and adjust accordingly, but initial experience can be a nightmare. Overall, I prefer it to the main terminal vibe, but the key to both is experience and figuring out the program. South is more casual & less chaotic once you get the routine down. read more

Surprisingly I recommended the south terminal at AUS airport. This airport is just for Allegiant and Frontier airlines. The TSA line is non existent, rarely if ever have I ever waited in a line. They have a snack mini mart you can get food or souvenirs and then they have their full bar! I've ordered shots before my flight each time I've flown out. The staff is so friendly! Salvador was very knowledgeable about what to serve! Katie has to be the best staff member! She was so outgoing and fun! I love coming just to see the staff and hear their recommendations for alcohol! Highly recommend flying out of this terminal. read more

There seem to be a lot of extremely pampered folks losing it over the fact that they have to wait in the same TSA line as peasants, eat alien moon man food at a TACO!!! truck ohmigod!!! and (gasp!) walk *outside* to board the plane? Clutch my pearls, Jeeves, you can't be serious!!! Yet the same folks, I strongly trow, weren't complaining at the roughly $0.39 they spent on tickets to fly twenty-ninth class on Cheapskateola™ Airlines, where you can choose your seat for an extra twenty bucks, for fifty you get to sit on the captain's lap, for $75 the flight attendant sits on your lap, and $500 extra buys you the plane. I have flown extensively all over the world, and this terminal is fine. It's not a nightmare, it's not so crowded that there is nowhere to sit, TSA aren't stormtroopers, it isn't chaos, there's no disorganization, it's just a no-frills airport terminal where Economy airlines pay less for airport space and pass the savings along to us. If the negative reviews are making you anxious about your purchase of a fifteen-cent plane ticket to Atlanta taped to the wing of an origami glider, you can relax. This a perfectly decent terminal. TSA was a breeze, all the staff is friendly and relaxed, the snack bar has plenty of drinks and food, and the outdoor patio and boarding area lends the terminal a nice, breezy openness which will be a welcome change for the claustrophobic or outdoorsman set. While I wouldn't classify any public airport experience as five-star, this wasn't really any worse than bigger terminals, making adjustments of course for the fact that this one caters to cheaper airlines. I've attached numerous photos of the terminal, from the parking lot to the patio, to show that there is nothing to dread. read more

This is an embossment for tech forward thinking city like Austin. The shuttle between South and main is slooooowww. I've waited an hour at the main terminal to transfer. Uber is horrible. I landed today and 3 Uber drivers dropped the request for a ride to Lakeway. Tried Lyft and poof, done no problems. The crossing guard said Uber is a problem at this terminal. When is Austin going to get with it. the main terminal is busting at the seams. Came from New Orleans where I thought things were backward but NO bests this airport hands down. I've never encountered something as stupid as South Terminal and its shuttle in my years of traveling. My family and I got into Austin yesterday after a 3 hour flight only to discover that we would need to take a shuttle to the actual airport where the car rentals are. Except there were about a hundred other passengers who also needed to take the shuttle to the main airport. It takes 10+ plus minutes to get from the South Terminal to the actual airport and it appears there is only 1 shuttle which brings passengers at the South Terminal to the actual airport. When you have a hundred people waiting in line for a shuttle that can only carry like 15 people and is 20 minute round trip - you wait more than an hour to get to the actual airport. Why is there only one shuttle? Any airport that cared about its passengers would have a line of shuttles waiting at the South Terminal. Then when you finally arrive to the actual airport you see a line of 7-8 shuttles sitting and just waiting for 1 person to take to a parking lot while hundreds of people are stranded at the South Terminal. Just embarrassing incompetence. read more

Part of this is my fault: my Lyft dropped me off early. But, as I stood in the line in front of the Frontier counter, waiting for someone to come staff the desk, I realized...someone should at least be able to answer my questions. One airport employee finally told me that the desk would open at 7:00 am (I'd gotten in line at around 6:50 am). As I stood there, willing the hands on my watch to move faster, the line started to grow. And grow. And grow. 7:00 am came. 7:00 am went. 7:10 came. 7:10 went. 7:15 came, and then it, too, went. 7:20 came and...guess what? It went, too! It was after 7:30 am by the time the door to the back opened and desk agents started to filter in. I could hear the people behind me loudly muttering about them taking their sweet time, but my flight wasn't set to leave for another 90 minutes, so I wasn't as angry. Just mildly annoyed. The gate agent that finally waved me over was flat-out rude. Like I'd somehow inconvenienced her by flying out of that terminal, and needing her assistance to get my bag checked. Best I can say is that it was a brief encounter, and I was making my way to security in no time. Security here, after all that, was incredibly easy. I've only ever experienced those kinds of processing times in other countries, so I'd give them 5 stars for that part alone. Unfortunately, once through security, it was more of the same. The lounge was sad and uncomfortable, the one store I saw was barely limping along on the merchandise they had stocked, and the agents working that part of the airport were just as rude and unhelpful. read more

This is best little airport in Texas! (and anywhere!) Loved flying out of and back in this terminal! With 3 gates, it's undoubtedly the most ease-filled airport experience I've ever experienced (in 4 decades of traveling worldwide). Add to that a very cool inside lounge... and the most astounding OUTDOOR patio with a cool food truck(!!!) and this is really just too good to be true... but it is true! Including fair prices on the food truck, and the indoor store. If that wasn't enough... it all feels very old school! You can view the airplanes on the tarmac from the outdoor patio (some very up close and personal like the BA 747 I saw land and taxi while I was there) AND you walk to and from the plane... on the tarmac...! Again, very old school! All this in such a compact foot print and can walk anywhere (including to the parking lot within a minute(!) or so! Fantastic job South Terminal!
