Great spot. Super cool, definitely cheesy. It was very cool to see old American classics playing on the TVs! We went here at about 11 after a concert in Brooklyn, normally we're out of towners. We just wanted a spot to sit and avoid the train rush, but we wound up really really enjoying! The cheese pizza was very good, and the beer selection is great. Yes yes yes! This place was very fun and it's a good spot to take a friend out and catch up. We ordered a large pie half cheese and pepperoni and OMG! That pizza was FANTASTIC! It was so cheesy and the sauce was amazing! I also had a beer. Greg took care of us and gave us great friendly service. They also have free funny postcards as souvenirs. American Cheez is still a legit hometown dive bar that survived the pandemic through a successful fundraising campaign because it's so beloved and, unlike some jerks on Yelp who would rather give a business one star because they're not literally giving away free food anymore, I will double down on my five star reviews of this place. Yes the pizza is no longer free with a pint, but the prices are still insanely cheap and the pizza offered is actually better than the previous iteration. You can now get a personal pie or a large, toppings are still cheap as heck, and they offer garlic knots now too. Actually, let me rephrase that: they offer the best garlic knots I've had in NYC in like a goddamn decade. They're dripping with olive oil and loaded with garlic and I legitimately think about them every day. I almost wish they had take out for the food alone, honestly. Do not skip these garlic knots. Anyhow, the bar is as good as it was pre-pandemic and yes inflation is real but this place is not gouging you in any sense of the word so stop being a giant baby and accept that American Cheez rules. How have I not reviewed this little gem? American Cheez is a great dive bar on a more quiet part of 7th avenue. They have televisions that could be playing a sports game or some random movie. Who knows. They have games to play. They also just have a great vibe. Don't expect to come here for fancy cocktails. They have one, yes one, martini glass. If you're special enough they will let you drink out of it. It's a very unpretentious place. I saw another Yelper give this place one star, because they no longer give our free pizza with a pint of beer. That might be the dumbest thing I ever read on Yelp and I have read lots of dumb things on Yelp. Did the free small pizza make the place go from one star to five stars? Did American Cheez release COVID 19? As if it's their fault. Like WTF?!?! Well you can now pay six whole dollars for a small pizza and a little more if you want a larger one. I assure you, neither is going to break the bank AT ALL. Are either the best pizza Brooklyn has to offer? Of course not, but it's a tasty bar treat and still super cheap. I loved this place with its cheap pizza and movies playing on all the TVs. The 70s decor is a truly personal reflection of the owner (whose name I forget) who is a great bartender. But. One of the "bartenders" who works there is just a mean angry dude who shoots evil looks at anyone he doesn't approve of. One night he made some joke after we got our beers (we white women; he brown man) and literally pointed at us as they sneered. I was shocked. Finally made my way over to American Cheez after their 2021 reopening. Great outdoor setup on a sunny Saturday, beers were flowing and they were slinging pies. Beers reasonably priced ($5-$8 for cans and draft) with a solid selection for a dive. Pizzas for $9 are probably the best snack you can get for a bar with no kitchen. The crust looks much different from pictures from pre-winter closing. To be blunt, two steps above bowling alley pies, one step below parlor pies. read more

Without the pizza, the beer is reasonably priced, at around $7 for something on tap, comparable with other bars in NYC. The pizza is pretty comparable to any $1 slice shop, with the standard seasoning available -- parmesan, oregano, chili pepper flakes. I really appreciate the bartender going the extra mile by serving pizza to our table on top of catering to everyone's drink orders. You can add pepperoni or jalapeno for $1 if you're feeling up to it! They've got great music playing, karaoke on Wednesday nights (pre-COVID of course), and a bunch of card & board games available as well. Great dive bar. Came here after a disappointing experience over at a nearby beer garden. That other place was cash only, served you in plastic cups, and was elbow to elbow busy. Not fun and def not my crowd (young). Came to American Cheez and felt a bit dubious about staying. It's a hole in the wall bar that looks a little too much like a hole in the wall bar. To my surprise though, this place is amazing. American Cheez has some fine beer offerings on draft. I would have thought they'd only have bud light, corona, heinekin, etc, but I was able to get a Kelso and sat down pretty happy. The staff was INCREDIBLY friendly and genuinely happy to have us there. It was a pretty good time. They also have a television so you can watch sports if you're into that sort of thing. The one thing that should bring you here should you be on the fence is the fact that they'll hook you up with a little personal pan pizza for every $5 you spend. I had three! I'm slowly becoming a regular here. It's the perfect dive bar within walking distance to my apartment. I come for a ShockTop and a pizza. It's a cool spot for young groups. There's sometimes a few older folk too. The pizza is thin and a bit crispy and is my ideal pizza. It's not overly greasy and I don't feel horrible after I eat it. The bartenders are always friendly with the regulars and are super laid back. They're attentive and kind. There's also a few games laying around like Connect 4 and Jenga. The women's room is plastered with photos of John Travolta. Yeh I don't know. It's a fun place to come when I want to go out but want to wear leggings and not have to take the subway. A neighborhood dive featuring all walks of life. I've laughed here. I've cried here. I've fallen in love here. I've stayed past close to shoot the shit with the owner, Brad, and wound up watching the sun rise from inside the bar. Let's start there, with Brad. He and his co-owner, Rob, are two of the nicest and most fun-loving dudes you'll ever meet. The two of them are ND grads, so they drink like Catholics and can also carry on a conversation about just about anything, from sports to politics to current events. They love interacting with their guests and are quick to learn a name (I had friends who would drop by like, twice, six months apart, and Brad would reference them by name like three months after that). The goods: these guys know how to turn a profit (I'm assuming?) but not charge you an arm and a leg. Everything is reasonably priced, they have a good beer/cider selection and all of your standard liquors. Best thing: you get a personal pizza with every drink. No, it's not, like, Ignazios, but it definitely hits the spot. The ambiance is as divey as it gets, and they offer table games like jenga & connect4. The walls, ceiling, and bathrooms are all oozing with kitsch. It's fantastic. The events: well, they're an ND bar, so they have a big projection screen for all ND football games and major basketball games. It can get fairly packed depending on how big the opponent is, and Brad has been known to parade around pouring Jameson into people's mouths if the Irish score a touchdown. Other than this debauchery, they have also had events like Karaoke Night and the "Cheez Ball," which I have never attended but I believe is a big celebration of their opening anniversary every year. All in all, this was my literal corner bar for 5 years and I'm so sad I moved away from it. I will undoubtedly be back this fall for a game watch or two. read more

There is so much to like about this bar. The obscure oldie films being projected? Yas. The niche posters of 90s references on the wall? Yas. The affordable drinks and free pizzas? YASSS. Lo and behold, this bar was made for the weird generation of people who grew up loving things that not many other people understood. I knew this the moment I laid eyes on the Starship Troopers poster on the wall, and then the weird painting of Arnold Schwarzenegger diagonal from it. Calling all fellow weird kids from high school--this is where we belong! Drinks are standard here, but honestly, you don't need some sort of fancy craft beer to wash down a FREE PIZZA. How they can keep up this "free mini pizza with every drink" baffles me. Now I may have been pretty drunk around this time, but I thought the pizza was pretty bangin' for the price of free. (Disclaimer: Around this time, I also find uncooked ramen noodles and cold meatball sandwiches in front of my refrigerator pretty bangin' too). I've been going to this place since my brother introduced me to it. The owners are incredibly friendly and they are extremely dedicated to service. If you ever saw "Cheers" and listened to the opening song, this is the place where they'll know your name and are glad you came. Card games, Jenga, Connect four, pizza and drinks. Definitely a place to go and kick back on a last stop on any Saturday night. I know they do Karaoke during the week, unfortunately my schedule gets crazy, but I definitely want to show up and sing Bohemian Rhapsody one day. Show up, you won't regret it. My first winter in Brooklyn, I lived two doors down from American Cheez. I didn't know anyone in New York City, hadn't lived anywhere that cold, and was pretty miserable. Enter American Cheez. While not great for the ol' waistline, being able to come back from work for a beer and a pizza, and chat with the friendly crew that assembled there, is one of my best memories. The beer is cold and very fairly priced. The bartenders are great at their jobs and very hospitable. The pizza is better than you'd expect for $0. Pay for extra cheese and a topping (when I was there they usually had jalapenos and/or pepperoni, not sure how that's changed) and it's tasty. read more
