Service was a bit slow, took a while to get water and get my order in. Didn't have big expectations, so I opted for bananas on French toast with brown sugar on the side. With real maple syrup and a dish of vanilla ice cream. The idea was a type of bananas foster style French toast. Something I didn't expect to get to my expectation of a dish on a whim, but enough of the raw components to make a version of it. It also took a while to come out, but eventually got to eating. The French toast was cooked well. Seasoned and soaked to make a nice custardy bite. Maple syrup was real but not a great brand. But they didn't charge by the Dixie cup full so that was nice of them. Ice cream was of a good quality, and the banana was nice and ripe. The only major detractor was the French toast was cold. It was cooked and died on the pass, which messed up the hot-n-cold play between the French toast and the ice cream. Still tasty, but would've been better warm. The price was okay, with all the add ons the French toast came out to 13 bucks. It's clear that the kitchen knows how to cook, but there were issues with execution this time around. I grew up in the same area this store is located and have head pretty much all the ice cream within a 20 miles radius...outside of that I can't say I've had ALL the ice cream, but I've had a lot. Even outside of Connecticut, the Tolland X-tra Mart has some of the most phenomenal soft serve ice cream you've ever had. They don't offer a lot in terms of flavor...pretty much your basic vanilla, chocolate of twist. You can get "flavor blasts" which are vanilla ice cream with a twist of some other flavor (cheesecake, grape and pineapple are a few examples) but I don't highly recommend them...not because they're not good, but because good ice cream shines without any fancy flavors added in. There is also the usual array of toppings...sprinkles (jimmies), or a dip....but only one cone option other than the basic cone; waffle. Now, I know I've painted a rather dismal picture....afterall, most good ice cream places nowadays pride themselves on the sheer variety of flavors, toppings and cones they offer. But if you're looking for something a little more simple...I promise you, you will not be disappointed. The ice cream here is creamy, and flavorful, and always perfect. I didn't know just how good soft serve ice cream could be until I started becoming a regular at this unassuming X-tramart. Give it a try...you'll probably become one too! I took out my card to pay and asked to tap but she took the card to insert it into the card machine. The food itself was not good. I got the spicy shrimp sushi roll. It had no flavor and the shrimp was chewy. I also found a piece of the shell they had not removed. The rice was also a little old. Would not recommend coming if you want good sushi.
