1st - I call to get service turned on to a place I just got and was accused very bluntly, rudely, and insultingly of stealing power and was told I.had to provide a proof of residence of where I was staying at the time, a copy of my new lease, and proof from the landlord that he owned the place and pay a $416 deposit 2nd - I did all of this and was told verbatim that those requirements being met was all I needed to get the power turned on then two days later I call to see why it's not on only to find out that I needed to find an inspector to get approval of equipment to get the service turned (cost another $200) ....had I not called. No one was going to call me to let me know I needed to do that as if it was ok to leave me waiting in November with no heat, hot showers or light 3rd I send this in and they act as if it's ok for me not to know when the power is going to be turned on and they're department is backed up as if I should be understanding that they can't do their job in a timely manner 4th I ask to speak with a supervisor who said none of this requires them to expedite my power being turned on and was bluntly told it will not be expedited and when I asked this rude woman Mrs Pennington who her supervisor was or what her contact info was she flat refused to tell me and told me to call the customer support number which is the same number I had been calling this entire time as if that's been any help at all. 5th I have an 11 year old daughter who can't come here as well as a mother on oxygen who also can't come here until it gets turned on and that doesn't seem to matter to them I would love if someone from AEP would call me and take some accountability as well as fix my issue so that yelp is as far as I go with this complaint because I know in my heart that a company this large that has made it this long has to have a higher standard of customer service than I've been shown to date my name is marc Harless and they have my contact information on file read more

This neighborhood is consistent in one thing and that's power outages.Lasting for days not hours.Send texts of restoration times that never happen then send another with a farther out time.Their rates with all sorts of surcharges keep going up but yet they cannot maintain their lines. AEP was out do to a neighbor calling about sparks coming from the line in a recent storm. They showed up and turned off my power without any notice. And while I was at work, proceeded to trim my trees. But the worst part was they left a huge mess of large limbs in my backyard. (See photo). I called asking if they were going to come back but no one answered and I had to leave a message. 3 days went by and I eventually had to pay a tree company $200 to remove the limbs or my grass would have died under the mass. I'd like to officially declare AEP as the worst company on the entire planet. Let me give you some insight. We went on a week long vacation, and apparently someone accidentally tried to start service at our location, so they shut off our power without letting us know. We then come back to a cold appartment with a fridge full of rotten food. customer service couldn't even trace why our power went off until someone called us back and gave an explanation. They don't even have a full proof way of verifying whether or not someone still lives at a current address, what a joke. Instead of replaceing old equipment AEP just puts a bandade repair on it. Yesterday I was without power for 8 hours as a result of a transformer that had caught fire in the area. This particular transformer has caught fire before but instead of replaceing it they just keep it going. I know aep has enough money to make replacements instead of repairs. I use to live in another part of Ohio and they did the same thing. The transformer would blow but instead of replaceing it it was just repaired, worked for a while and then boom! out again. This must be their practice, put a bandade repair on equipment and kick the can down the road. read more

American Electric Power is a standard giant utility, and so they really don't care about their small customers. But the service isn't gawdawful, either. Two contrasting cases: 1. We installed Ruud 17-SEER heat pumps in our home. AEP offers rebates, but only (a) if you install with one of *their* contractors and (b) only if the equipment is made by one of *their* manufacturers. It's a kickback scheme, not a true rebate system. 2. We installed solar panels, which entailed changing our meter to one that can handle net metering. The installation was completely painless and things are working perfectly fine. They don't offer EV rebates, by the way; the only EV rebate system they have is a kickback scheme for government or commercial sites installing charging stations. First time ever, for the next year I have to pay by phone, check or go there. I can't use their app, due to this issue. AEP is not in the business of communication. I recently experienced my first run-in with the power company after moving into my first post-college apartment. We called to have the electric switched to our names and gave the name of a current AEP customer for a sort of collateral to get our application fee waived. It seemed simple enough. We moved in and were distracted by the whirlwind of things you have to take care of in that first month of settling. Around the fifth week we began to wonder where our bill was. We had moved into the apartment mid month and thought that maybe they were holding our half-bill to be sent with our full-bill, so we'd be paying a month-and-a-half our first go around. We patiently waited. Then week six came and went. We called AEP to see what was going on. Where was our bill? They informed us that the power had never officially been switched to our name. Somehow, there had been a screw up. They were going to turn our power off within the week. They hadn't even sent us a notice to tell us about this! We got everything straightened out without having to pay any kind of late fee or anything, but the idea of them messing up our application, not switching the electric into our names, and then preparing to turn our power off without any sort of communication is absurd. I'm 61 and in poor health and I went this morning to call customer service to ask a question and all I got a "virtual" machine which couldn't help. I finally got through to live rep after minutes, literally 15 and was immediately put on hold, I stayed on the phone for another 12 minutes and the line finally seem I was going to be connected but as soon as I did, I heard someone and they through me back in the que, needless to say had to repeat the whole process with the "virtual" machine AGAIN which again took minutes. I waited and then the line went dead and dial tone. This wasn't me but AEP's customer service. Greedy old AEP could care less about residential customers and try to help during the pandemic but not AEP. Just ask the people last winter in Texas. I do want to commend Columbia Gas for what they have done for their customers on fixed income instead of 6% they are taking 5%. It's not a lot but the gesture of trying to help is what I give them credit. You think AEP would do the same but not greedy AEP! read more

I'd give AEP 4 stars if they didn't have a monopoly on the second most important utility in Central Ohio. What's the first? Water, of course. I can't say that I'm mad at AEP or upset with their customer service. Although, I have to say that it would be nice if I could get through to a customer service rep within 3 minutes instead of 10. We've only lost our power a few times over the last 4 years. We even survived Hurricane Ike's 70+ mph winds last September by only losing power for a couple of hours while our neighbors lost power for 2 days! For that miracle, I gave AEP 3 stars instead of 2. Finally, I am a big fan of open competition in our free market capitalistic society (or what's left of it) and the monopoly of utilities tends to create inflated pricing much like a socialist regime. On the other hand, if there were more competitors, the quality of this vital utility might be compromised to some degree, but not enough to sacrifice lower costs. All-in-all, I'm neither upset nor elated by AEP and their service. I lived in Powell years ago for 10 years. At that time Powell was rural so most of us had back up heat. Once there was a power failure but it was due to Powell growing faster than the transformers. I read every review only cause its a habit of mine. I find a lot of the problems people had here with AEP is their own personal responsibility. BAD CREDIT is a biggie-you are now paying for all that student debt you skipped payments on. Fix your credit and your life would be more hassle free. It is your responsibility to alert your utilities (water, electric, direct tv)that you moved. Period. And check again to make sure they closed that account. Oh and did you have good credit with the utility company? Oh so you didn't pay a few bills last year...don't expect them to go head over heels for you. You have to go online to double check that it went thru-you would do that with online banking depositing that check from mommy & daddy why won't you check your utility account to make sure it is closed? And with rebates-you ALWAYS need to read the requirements. That is not the utilities problem but the customer for not being a good shopper. And with wind, you better figure out how much wattage you use in a day, then compute what the solar puts out-and see proof from the manufacture cause guess what, they lie-then see how many sunny days you had the last 5 years (farmers almanac) . People eyes glass over when the solar panel salesman (a step lower from a bridge salesman) tells you that you can sell your extra electric-what a joke! There isn't any extra power, and you will find you still have to buy, and those $22,000 solar panels will never pay off. I wish High Schools would teach a class 9-12 called LIFE. Our younger generations really lack in knowledge they need just for living. If you want to experience a bad electric company, move to Maine. Every time the wind blows 30 mph+ you have to start preparing for the black out. Keep jugs of frozen water in the freezer-will buy you a few hours of coolness. I'm kind of done with AEP. I wish that there were more options for people who rent, but unfortunately, AEP is everywhere. I just spent 40+ minutes on the phone with AEP disputing my bill. Eventually, they fixed my budget amount. The rep that I spoke with quoted an amount (about $150) and I said cool, set up the agreement for the plan, end of story. About 2 minutes later, a voicemail pops up on my phone and it's the same rep telling me that the $150 isn't correct and my ACTUAL budget amount needs to be more like $300 because of the history of use at the address (which I just moved in to BTW.) In what universe is this okay? I promptly called back and spoke to someone else, who I think fixed the issue, although the $150 amount is "no longer possible." But seriously, WTF? I have never been anywhere or dealt with anyone where it has been acceptable to agree to a budgeted amount and then call back leaving a voicemail doubling the original amount. If you work in customer service and you don't know what you're doing, find another job, ask for more training, etc. Do what you have to do, or just simply say "I don't know" and transfer me to someone else. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars. I really like Columbus, but it seems like every time someone sneezes, we lose power. I grew up on the East Coast, where we get some nasty storms and occasionally the remnants of hurricanes. We don't lose power like this. I even lived on the Delaware beaches for two summers--and that was years ago. Hellacious storms, and no power outages like this. Suburbs of Philly--same thing: maybe two power outages (once when a driver ran into a pole) in 10 years, with the longest lasting about 3 hours. That was considered an incredibly long time. In fact, you could call a line and get an estimated time to restoration of power based on your address. There were many things I didn't like about PECO, but they were excellent at keeping the lights on. Days of outages? Just did not happen. Ever. More than 10 years in Chicago. Same thing again: no power outages like this. Maybe 30 minutes here and there. In my development, perhaps 20% of houses now have standby generators! That's like something I saw in the developing world, in Koh Samui, Thailand, a beautiful, tiny island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. It made sense there. You could get around the entire island on a scooter in maybe an hour, and they were exposed to typhoons and monsoons. But here? It's just unacceptable. Columbus, other areas of the country do not live with these sorts of power outages, and they have storms, above-ground lines, icing, and strong winds just like central Ohio. I am so glad to see AEP sweating because of deregulation. And they ARE sweating, or else they wouldn't be resisting competition so fiercely and spending your money on misleading ads. Record profits but undependable infrastructure? That's just not acceptable. There needs to be some sort of incentive for them to keep the lights on. Maybe mandatory rebates based on the amount of time the lights go out. Maybe doubled or tripled to account for inconvenience, inability to work from home, and spoiled food. Perhaps they should have to pay for standby generators for those of us who need them (pretty much everyone), since they cannot provide dependable electricity. I'm with First Energy now, and I do save about 10% on the energy generation portion of my bill. The distribution/transmission portion doesn't change, because that still comes from our hapless friends at AEP. I wish I could have First Energy, Duke, Excelon--anyone but AEP--take over the entire infrastructure, because it could not possibly be worse. read more

I just recently moved into my new home and on 12/12, submitted my deposit. Came home that evening to no power. I recieved NO notice that it was shut off. Called, and received VERY little help from the representative. He was extremely rude. Today, 12/16, I called because it was STILL not back on. The representative I spoke with told me it would be on by 8pm because today was the third business day, he told me to call around 8 to make sure it was back on because I had driven 40 minutes to a family member. DID NOT grab anything from home because I planned on coming back. It is shortly after 8pm, so I called them back to make sure....the representative i spoke with THEN told me it was NOT reconnected and would not be back on until tomorrow 12/17 and she "did not know where the other person I spoke to, got his information." I am SO extremely angry. This is thee absolute WORST customer experience I have ever had. I have had NO electric at home for 5 days now. That is 5 days, i have had to sleep on the couch of a family member and drive 45 minutes to work every day rather than 12 minutes, as well as remove my cat from her home as well.
