The guy came out and said it was too late to do anything so he brought a suitcase size silver box for a "temporary fix" and said they would be back Monday. Power went out shortly after 4 PM. After it had been off for an hour, I went to the website to report the outage. I waited another hour, and, not hearing anything, decided to call and check the status. The automated recording said I had reported my outage at 6:12! Concerned that the website isn't working, I asked to speak to a representative. 20 minutes on hold, then the automated system picked up again, and did not remember I was waiting for a representative. read more

We pay them a lot money annually for there service so when a small storm hits and we loose power we have paid service to get us back up an running. AEP get it together. Just spoke with Costumer Service Rep Gustav. Very rude. Would not answer a single, simple question. I have immediately switched suppliers as I was not under contract. Gustav is 100% the reason AEP lost a costumer. If that is the way your point of contact people talk with potential costumers I have no doubt that should an actual problem arise with my bill your company would be a nightmare to do business with. read more

I am totally disgusted with AEP and fully intend to file complaints with the state of Virginia's agency which regulates Utility companies. AEP dropped the ball in regards to the transfer of service from Apartment 8 to Apartment 7, and has made no effort whatsoever in terms of straightening out the matter. Not an honest or professional company. Received a bill for 3 times my normal bill so I called to find out why and they told me I used that much for that month, I had this matter investigated or whatever they would like to call it and then this company tells me my bill is so high because the meter reader had been reading my meter incorrectly. This is a shady bunch of money hungry greedy people. I will be switching to City of Columbus Electric Service, they have a better rating than AEP. Also their paperless billing is a joke it doesn't come monthly as it should so keep up with when your bill is due. My bill comes once every three months. read more

When you turn off the electricity and do not reconnect with AEP, you are given a credit card. However, in the case of spousal separation or some other reason, and you are paying the electric bill, they issue a refund with a credit card that can only be used for purchases. I paid the bill with cash. Since I had to move, I needed the cash back since I had to pay deposits on rent and other utilities. read more

Absolutely terrible service. Power has been out 5 times in the last 3 weeks. They do not care to fix the issue. My neighbors all have power.

I tried to update my autopay bank information on their website after recently changing banks. Clicked "autopay monthly withdrawal" and "update bank information" from the menu and entered new bank routing number and account number. Later learned that AEP offers "two products" for auto pay--"automatic payment" and "direct payment," one is serviced by AEP and the other by a third party. Apparently, I had direct payment and there is another, less obvious place on the website to update bank information for that product. No message from them that I had updated information in the wrong place. When the monthly bill wouldn't process (since I had closed the old account), I called to pay the bill and update the information again. I was told that I am now ineligible for autopay for twelve months! (A "punishment" for a failed payment?!?) I was also told they are aware of the confusion of the options on the website and that they are trying to correct it, but they can't make any exception to their policy and I can't re-enroll for a year. It is mind boggling that a company can understand there is a problem with their website, but be unwilling to make any accommodation for a consumer who is simply trying to make sure her bills get paid on time---of course, this is the problem when a company has a MONOPOLY. If there was any other option for electric utilities in our service area, I would surely change companies. After speaking to two representatives, a supervisor, and someone in the direct pay department, I finally asked, "If you have two products for autopay, can I enroll in the other one?" The man said, "yes, but I will have to mail you an application and it will take 4-6 weeks." When I asked why no one had mentioned this option to me, he said, "I was going to mention it at the end of our conversation..."?!?!? If you have options in your service area, do yourself a favor and choose any company other than AEP!! read more

Intentionally turned off our power for 4 straight days now . No rolling outages nothing. Most others havnt lost their electricity at all yet we have not showered since Sunday. Now its Thursday night. Yesterday they turned us on for 2-3 minutes. We were so excited and as soon as I turned the heater on they turned us back off again. Our house is in the 40s. What a joke Aep. Businesses have lights and marquees lit up but you choose to freeze us out. Pitiful. read more

My daughter's power was shut off on Friday, Sept 13th, 2019. She was told someone came in on Aug 2nd to set up service at her address and gave bank account info and everything. Since the payment didn't go through they were disconnecting and she was being told the use of electric at HER address was considered fraudulent because it was in someone else's name. My daughter and her husband have lived there for years, are making payments towards purchase of said address and have several young children living at the residence. They have no intention of moving and AEP will give them no information on who attempted to start service at their address. They have been told she should have received a "final bill"--she did not or she would have called to question what was going on. She has also been told she has to pay her final bill of over $139 plus $177 to reconnect plus over $540 for the fraudulent activity or some such stupidity. The guy who shut her off even commented "you are still here" when she went to question what he was doing. He also told her "it's a flaw in the system". He told her to call the company. She did and talked to SEVEN different people who basically told her it was a flaw or an error but she was still responsible. Shouldn't there be some kind of checks and balances to be sure said address is not currently being supplied before setting up new service? My daughter and her family have been without power for over a week now. Temps in the upper 80s and low 90s, no AC and lost food in fridge/freezer. She contacted the AG office Friday and was told to contact PUCO which she did. She hasn't heard anything since an email on the 16th from PUCO stating that AEP has been contacted. What are the protections for instances like this? My daughter should only be responsible for HER bill not AEPs screw up or some fraudulent activity that clearly wasn't her doing. I do not have the necessary nearly $1,000 to get her reconnected and do not feel she owes this money or should be responsible for it. read more

I have AEP and it has sucked the life out of me. Their pole snapped off at the ground nearly falling into my house. The pole ripped the wires out of the box. A think she knows it all engineering TECH Janet came out to assess the situation. Now I was told I simply needed someone that knows how to hook the wires from their pole to a new pole and that would be it. Three thousand dollars later (crooks) out of my pocket. I'm still waiting. This is the worst company. Now I'm looking into solar energy. This company from Janet to Bob are no help and will drain your bank account to line their pockets. read more

AEP "Topped" trees along my yard. Now the limbs are growing sideways onto my property causing damage and difficulty mowing. They say this is normal growth. Now I have to pay to have this cleared. To add insult to injury, our power was off for a whole day recently and I had to throw about $200.00 worth of food away. We have no choice of provider. We need a consumer advocate! read more

Suprisingly, nobody else has commented on AEP here yet. Maybe it's because their power is still out on day 3 after hurricane ike rolled on through. So AEP, the company that has a majority of a monopoly of the power in central ohio, could power the color changing lights on their building downtown on Sunday night after the storm, but could not do the same for over 300,000 people throughout central Ohio. This is actually funny, as I was just reading a report on AEP earlier this year about spending money to bury power lines where they stated "it's not worth the investment to bury power lines in pre-existing homes and businesses, only in new-build locations. The cost to repair lines is cheaper. Besides, Ohio is in little danger for severe electric outages due to downed power lines. Our technicians will be able to restore most cases within a few days." Apparently 7 days is a few for some people. I am protesting the current billing charges. I strongly disagree with you telling me the only way to reduce my bill is to allow another company/energy service to offer me a reduced rate and then they charge me a fee for that service! Then to give me a Shut Off Notice because I made a partial payment for just the amount going through my meter not all those other charges! The whole process is wrong and I call it Extortion! Read the law in Blacks law book! I have been having an account for 20 years at one address and now you demand a deposit because I refuse to pay your cost to bring me electricity under that 820 tariff on top half of bill! So Aep has me over a barrel! where I live 7 other people receive same electric on transformer and we all pay the transfer transmission charges x7 Everybody I talk to agrees with me but dont know how to stop it! AEP makes it very dificult to pay. Columbia gas of Ohio for example just transferred service to my name and set-up automatic payments from my checking account...and the woman on the phone was pleasant. AEP gives two options to make first payment: go to a "pay station" and pay a fee OR go online and pay a fee. In order to sign-up for auto withdrawal you have to go to a third party website and wait 4-6 weeks. That is nonsense. Both of the people that I spoke with on the phone at AEP had bad attitudes. Perhaps if AEP would put a decent system in place and NOT have Customer Service reps being a pain in peoples rears...AEP customer service representatives would have a better attitude and not be so nasty to customers. read more

The majority of the people hired by this company seem incompetent at doing their job. My husband and I started renting a property and I called to have an account opened in my name. The woman I spoke with was very nice, but failed to really tell me any necessary information. She said she would send the bills to us through mail and a slip regarding the deposit. NOTHING came in the mail regarding the deposit and she failed to mention the company actually DOES NOT send anything regarding a deposit due in the mail. The same thing happened to my husband with our previous account, and no one ever told him they never send anything about the deposit through the mail. She also failed to mention the deposit is due within 15 days and gave no other details on how to pay it...so we were waiting for this piece of mail to arrive regarding the deposit and nothing ever came. I called on day 16 to inquire about the mail I never got to find they closed my account because the deposit never got paid, which never got paid because THEY failed to give necessary information regarding the deposit. I then requested to set up paperless billing because I did not trust them to send me mail anymore. I asked if using the same email as our other account (we are overlapping rent right now) would mess anything up and she said NO. I create an account, use the same email, and it says I can't pay the bill online because we have a different user ID and it conflicts with our other account. After 19 days, we finally got everything figured out, supposedly. They really should inform their customers that there is NOTHING that will come in the mail regarding a deposit and give information on how to pay this. How are they supposed to know to pay within 15 days and how to pay when you don't tell them? read more

First of all, get everything in writing! I recently purchased a house that had a detached garage on a different electric meter. After a year I got the settlement bill for the house budget plan and I was tired of paying the absurd bill for the garage (It was as much as the house!) so I called to turn off the garage and make arrangements for the house. The gentleman on the phone told me not to make a payment on the house and when I get the final bill for the garage to call back in to combine the bills and just have one payment plan. I followed his advice and when I finally got the bill I called in only to be told that the garage had already been sent to collections and there was no way to combine the two bills to begin with! I wanted to talk to a manager right away but none were available at the time so they were supposed to call me the next day (wednesday). I ended up calling them back today (monday) so I could get this settled. After talking with the manager I found out that the garage wasn't completely in collections. I was in "pre-collections", whatever that is, and I could make two separate payment plans but couldn't combine the two. So basically the first guy had no idea what he was talking about and lied to me so he wouldn't have to set up a payment plan and the first woman I talked to didn't want to set up a payment plan for the garage and just told me it was in collections so she wouldn't have to deal with it. Is there an actual training program there that people have to take before they can answer the phones? Shouldn't the employee's have to be knowledgeable about the billing programs, computer software and what can and can't be done? If the management is so busy/lazy and not caring about taking care of their customers shouldn't you find someone who does? There are plenty of people who need jobs right now. Find someone who is actually willing to do theirs properly. read more

This is the worst company I dealt with. I have little bit of water coming near the electric meter box into inside my home. I hired a contractor, he checked everything resealed and it didn't stop. He told me call AEP and check the meter area. I called AEP and they told me someone will come in next couple of days and will check, no one showed up, I called probably 10 times so far, every time they say some one will come and cannot guarantee the day when they will come. It's been 3 weeks and I am getting the same response. I am not sure is anyone is going to come after a month or they may not even show up. This is the worst company. If you call anyone for a service, usually the schedule the appointment and give us the day and timing. But with AEP, they don't and you need to keep on calling them and finally no one will come. They have turned my business over for collect for breaking their bogus contract extension they locked me into without my consent before my first contract term had even expired!!! When I called PRIOR to my initial contract ending to see what the rate was going to do, they said doesn't matter as you are locked in for another 2 years - and they jacked up the rate. They claimed since I did respond to a letter they said they sent me declining the contract extension, it was too late to get out of it and I didn't have a choice but to go along with the new, much higher rate for another 2 years! Avoid these guys at all costs. I switched to First Energy Solutions at a really good rate. The town live in has contract with FES too and it is a much better deal than ComEd. read more

I would give this company zero stars if I could. I have rented in a lot of places and have never had a worse experience with an electric company. First of all, they are an ABSOLUTE RIP OFF. They managed to charge us over $150 dollars a month several months out of the year for a 550 sq foot apartment that barely used any electricity and insisted that everything was correct. If I have to move again and AEP is the only option, I will literally pick a different place to live. It is that bad. If you have a choice, stay far away. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars. They have AWFUL customer service! We attempted to switch our automatic withdrawal from one banking institution to another and it was an absolute NIGHTMARE. We had 2 different banking institutions listed on our account, so they tried to take our payment out of BOTH. Therefore, attempting to be paid TWICE, after they had already received our payment on the due date! Then they tried to charge us a late fee because one of the banks would not let them withdraw the payment. After several attempts this was resolved with very rude representatives over the phone. The following month they took away our ability to pay online without being charged a fee. When we tried to resolve this over the phone they were again rude and unhelpful. Why we should be penalized for paying our bill on time every month is beyond comprehension and seems quite backward. If you have a choice, do NOT do business with this company; seek other electric sources! read more

set up automatic payments to withdraw from my account. however, it was paying every 2 months instead of each month. when i called up and asked why, the representative N*cole was super snippy with me saying for whatever reason it didn't go though. And oh, by the way we're charging you a $75 deposit because of your non-payment. I laughed and said I can't pay online because i'm set-up with automatic withdraw and the automatic withdraw is not working right, so what am I supposed to do? This company is absolute garbage. Transformer blew this morning at 8:15am. Power came on for all of 10 minutes, and then shut back off. Called AEP, they informed us that this was normal in the process of fixing their equipment. NOTE: This is the second time in the past few months that a transformer has blown. The customer service person told us the ETA was at 11:30am. At 1pm, we finally got a hold of a supervisor, who THEN informed us that the bill, that we had paid a WEEK AGO, had been put on the wrong account. Said she returned it to our bank today, and that it would be there in a couple days (and you'd better believe I'll be calling if it's not there). But, to get our electricity turned on TODAY, we had to go to Kroger to pay it, since they didn't take debit cards over the phone (it's 2014). So, because they made a mistake, I will have essentially paid DOUBLE for at least the next few days. They also attempted to get us to pay the reconnect fee, even though this was THEIR billing mistake. We actually had to yell to get them to remove this damn fee. Crooked company, they'll try to bleed you dry. Stay away at all costs. read more
