The actual definition of price gouging. You can tell that price gouging is their business plan because of how mad they were when they learned that they now have follow the same rules as the actual utility providers and can't just make numbers up. Stay as far away as you can from any community that uses them. For May of 2026 I had an unoccupied 1 bed 1 bath apartment that was verified to have no drafts, had properly sealed windows and doors, and energy efficient appliances (that weren't even being operated), and the AC/Heat turned off, and the bill was still $300+!! They can blame it on electricity prices going up all they want, but I moved into a 4 bed house that same month and my price for electricity in that house was only $150. Happy to be rid of them and hope they go out of business for their blatant scam artist operations. read more

If you have a choice, stay far away from apartments that require Nationwide Energy Partners (NEP) for utilities. NEP handled water billing at our apartment for years, but serious issues only became clear once residents were forced to use NEP for electric service. At that point, our electric charges were significantly higher than what the local host utility (PECO) would have billed for the same usage, and NEP could not provide clear, reproducible documentation explaining why. When I requested a tariff-based explanation, NEP repeatedly claimed that my comparison to PECO's Price to Compare (PTC) was "not properly calculated." However, PECO has publicly published its Residential PTC Methodology, which confirms that the PTC includes generation and transmission, along with capacity costs, ancillary services, line losses, and taxes. In other words, the PTC is the exact consumer-facing benchmark PECO tells customers to use. Despite this, NEP never provided a transparent, line-by-line reconciliation showing how its total charges matched what PECO would have billed. Instead, NEP relied on internal calculations that residents cannot independently verify. NEP eventually admitted billing errors for multiple months, acknowledging that October and November electric bills were calculated using the wrong seasonal distribution rate, and issued limited credits. After that, NEP stated that its review was complete and declined further examination of billing methodology--while simultaneously inviting "further questions," with no path for additional review or resolution. This review is not about disliking utility costs. It is about a lack of transparency, accountability, and verifiable billing practices in a company residents are often forced to use. If NEP's billing truly matches the host utility, it should be straightforward to demonstrate that with documentation. In our case, that documentation was never provided. I just moved into this new apartment called Kingsley Park, the 19 of December by January 5th I received a $137 dollars bill from them and by that time my apartment was completely empty no tv and nothing. I didn't even cooked those 2 weeks and I work a 12 hours shift which means I'm barely home. When I'm away my heat set at 55 and when I'm at home 65 I barely turn my light on cause I tried not to use a lot of electricity, now tell me why NEP send me a $289 bill for a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment and I'm the only one living in there and I'm only home 7 hours a day. I had Pioneer for about a year with no issues, pretty normal 80-100 dollar energy bills for a studio with a few aquariums. Our rental company switched us over to nationwide and the next thing I know, or rate is starting out at 160 and climbing every month. by the end of the second year, with the same kwa roughly, I was paying nearly 275 a month. When I moved into my apartment I needed proof that I had a utility account set up with the City of Columbus and that is what I've been paying since. I live in a studio and my bills each month have been around $35 and I'm like wow that is so cheap. Fast forward to December 28, 2021 where my leading office emails me "you have a delinquent bill for utilities from NEP and owe $200+ ... paying utilities is part of your rent agreement" I HAD NEVER HEARD OF NEP THE ENTIRE TIME I'VE LIVED HERE. Being new to Ohio and not familiar with how these electric companies work, NEP has always been very helpful in assisting me to understand and always finds a way to explore options for me when I need them. I'm pleased that I never feel like I'm a bother when I call. The people I've spoken to have been very kind and I'm grateful that horrible service is not a thing I have to worry about here. Bills range from $200-$500. Even on a month you were gone for half of it. I spent 3+ years in an apartment that NEP provides service to and honestly I didn't have many issues or outages in the area. My bill was always current, if I had questions in relation to charges, staff and management were helpful with explaining in full detail. My advice to help manage energy usage, during the winter putting plastic up on the windows helped conserve usage. Water usage cost were on par for where I live now. As long as you're aware of the conditions and how much energy you're using towards HVAC, the cost are on fair in comparison to other utility companies. read more

For our one bedroom/one bathroom apartment, they charged us over $350/month in the spring when we were barely using heat or AC. My husband and I moved out of our apartment end of June (and turned our AC off in our apartment to cut costs since we won't be living in it for the last month of our lease), and they somehow still managed to charge us over $100. I recently downsized to a lifestyle community apartment. They only use NEP. I received my first bill yesterday and Yikes, I am paying almost twice as much utilities for a two bedroom apartment than I did for 3 level condo. The bill does not record how much you are paying per KWH or CUFI. It states your usage(No Transparency). I agree, this is a monopoly experience with LC, you are unable to choose another vendor. If Lifestyle communities cared about their renters/owners, they would not do business with companies with deceptive practices(crooks). According to a Class Action Lawsuit- Nationwide Energy is a submeter company that buys electricity, water and other utilities and resells them to residents. An outage occurred in January and I received notice we had an extraordinarily high usage that day, both water and electricity. How can I use 3 times the normal amount of electricity when THE POWER GOES OUT?! Also was told I used 68 cubic feet of water...THAT'S OVER 500 GALLONS. How can I use that much when I have no electricity to run a dishwasher or washing machine? Plus I've run just as much if not more on other days and never seen that number. Nationwide Energy Partners will rip you off. If I had researched NEP before I moved into my apartment complex, I would've lived elsewhere. We are forced to use NEP as our energy provider. With AEP, my two other roommates and I used $70 (tops) worth of energy each month. With NEP, my roommate and I are being charged $175. That's more than double our previous bills at our last apartment AND we downsized from three roommates to two. Criminals. I received my first bill and it was almost $215 (including $150 deposit). I was shocked but I knew what I was getting into when I signed my lease and was told I had no choice but to use NEP as my utility provider. BUT I went to pay my bill yesterday and noticed that the billing period was for 1 day! I called and was put on hold, and after speaking to the billing department, the customer service agent told me that the $65 dollars I was charged for my 1 day living at the apartment was a "flat fee" and could not be changed. After a few minutes of trying to explain that it should be prorated I asked to speak to her boss. She told me that she had already spoken to her boss while I was on hold and that there was nothing she could do. Nonetheless I demanded to speak to her, and the customer service agent reluctantly sent me to her VOICEMAIL and I left a message. I received a call later in the evening saying that the bill was incorrect and that billing had made a mistake. WHAT THE HECK! What happened to "flat fee"? Also, had I not been persistent (in particular with the customer service agent) I would have given them $215 rather than the correct amount I owed, $152. There is no rhyme or reason to the fees that appear on the bill (i.e. "clean river fund"; "customer fee"). These people are criminal and hopefully Mark A. Whitt v. Nationwide Energy Partners (case pending in front of PUCO) comes out in favor of the little guys, aka young people living in any new apartment community in Columbus. Moral of the story: READ YOUR BILLS CAREFULLY, and don't take no for an answer. GOOD LUCK. read more
