We have a side entrance, so I was worried it wouldn't fit. We watched in amazement as the three of them hauled the 500 pound piano up 8 steps and turned it on its side to fit into our door... in minutes. They lined the floor with blankets and did not make a single scratch or dent on the piano or the house. After the piano was properly placed, Rick made sure all the details were taken care of. I found this business online and called about a piano I saw listed. Rick was very friendly and invited me to the store. I stopped by a couple days later and the piano was not there anymore but there was a nice selection, including comparable pianos. Rick opened up the piano that interested me and gave me some of the piano's history, played the instrument and allowed me to play the instrument. He gave me info on other pianos to compare, both priced higher and lower than my piano of interest. He has apparent knowledge and passion for these instruments and is a competent businessman. Rick and his crew came today to move my piano, which I sold to a family in Evanston. They did a great job getting it safely down a pretty narrow flight of stairs (3-story walk-up). His movers were polite and professional, and while I was only present for the first part of the move, I can attest that their moving services are great. I do feel compelled to mention, though, one interpersonal issue. Rick has an employee, Shawn, with an intellectual disability. I chatted with Shawn a bit while Rick was in the bathroom, and he's a very kind and friendly person. I was somewhat shocked by how Rick treats this employee. I understand if he needs to give Shawn some clearly articulated directions while moving the piano, but he made two offhand comments that showed real disrespect for Shawn's disability: he said "don't talk to this nice lady, you don't have anything to say to her" and he also joked about Shawn not having attended school, and asked a teasing question about how he liked his teachers. He also expressed disdain at one point, saying, "it's not that hard!" when Shawn struggled with one direction he gave. It reminded me very strongly of the grocer character in the movie Amelie, and left a bad taste in my mouth. Employees with disabilities deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. read more

We purchased a Yamaha U3 from American Music World and the overall experience was absolutely exceptional. This is a family own business that take great and personal care of customers. Rick took care of all the steps starting from selection, piano care, and in-house delivery. The piano is flawless and cost just 4500USD and the 10 year part/labor plus 2 in-house tunings are included. Rick also gave us a brand new adjustable bench that match the piano (full price 550usd). Yeah, I'm reviewing the same business twice. Two locations, pretty different from one another. This location is much larger than it's Naperville counterpart, and I found my baby. I grew up spoiled. At age four my parents started me on piano lessons at the Conservatory, in what is now the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue. Well, naturally, they bought the four-year-old a Steinway grand. Sick, man. Thus, the action is so important to me - almost more important than the sound. I've played hundreds of pianos and have enjoyed playing, like, three tops. When I find the right one, the damn thing practically plays itself. Ray, the President, observed my lust for a firm touch pretty quickly and led me to the perfect instrument. It's an upright and used, but they have a 100% trade-up program (for my future Steinway), will tune it free upon delivery, and of course you get the bench (and I'm picky about those, so I'll probably get a different one). Pretty soon we'll do Howl at the Moon at my house. Beer and everything. No Billy Joel requests though - I hate that shit. read more

We used the piano moving service today. I normally do not write reviews on services but I felt compelled to do so today. I had a piano moved for the first time. I was kind of nervous because I wasn't sure what to expect. First of all, the owner (Rick) along with another guy arrived early. I was super shocked that they were on time. They were super professional. Both of them were very careful and made sure that we were happy with the delivery and placement of the piano. They were very efficient and made moving a piano look super easy (even though it isn't). I was surprised at how fast they were able to move the piano in and out of the homes. Rick was very nice to my family. He even played a few songs for us before he left. I'm not sure how much the average cost of a piano move is but it seemed reasonable. My longtime piano tuner/technician/neighbor recommended that I go to American Music World, and I could not be happier with my experience. Rick was a perfect salesperson -- he gave me complete, useful information without trying to push me into a purchase. I checked online, and the price he charged for my piano was VERY reasonable. I also was reassured by the sales contract, which included a guarantee that American Music World would repurchase my piano (for a good-sized chunk of the original price) if I had to move or sell it for any reason. The best part of the experience came when Rick and his team came to take away my enormous old beast of a piano and to deliver the new one. They were incredibly careful not to damage my floors, and they removed that heavy old thing without any complaints or passive-aggressive remarks. I rarely give 5 stars but they deserve it! Rick and his guys effortlessly moved our piano last night (well effortlessly for me) They were responsible, called to say they would be a few minutes late and minutes later they arrived, they surveyed the piano for bruises etc and made us aware of these, and they took the piano apart wrapping each piece carefully. They put the piano exactly where we wanted it and Rick played for us which was an added bonus and pleasure. He remarked how good it sounded. The move did come with a cleaning and tuning and this will be arranged after the piano sits in its new home for a few weeks - advised given by Rick. He and his team were professional, courteous, quick, and clean. They really respected that they were in someone's home. I recommend them highly. read more

I looked at the reviews before going to this place, and the review on 8/2/11 discouraged me from going because it said there were no pianos in stock -- that was completely untrue! Luckily, I decided to call, and I was told there were 20-25 used pianos in stock, ranging from free to $9000. I went into the store with my husband and 2-year-old daughter, and there were all the beautiful pianos! The reviewer on 8/2 must have been in a different store. Rick, the original owner's son (and I'm assuming one of the owners) helped us for about an hour. He said they'd been in business for about 30 years. There were other customers in the store, who were primarily assisted by Rick's father. We sat at no fewer than 10 pianos, and we got a great education -- he took the faces off the pianos to show us the felt pads and keys, and he had us compare different pianos' touch and construction. He was very kind with our active daughter and he was happy to have her sit and try out all the pianos! He is a great player so we got to hear all of the different pianos' tones. He was patient and great at answering questions, and he offered warrantees on the different pianos, told us about shipping, tuning, lessons, etc. He was a wealth of knowledge. We will definitely go back when we finally make a purchase -- it was friendly, no pressure, and a great selection. read more

I am an avid piano player and have been for many years, having said that, I have been to many differnt piano stores all across Chicago and The United States, and I feel that I don't have to mention how hard it is to find any piano dealership that has such a large inventory like that of American Music World. I was just in the store on Thursday 8/25/2011, and there were Three Yamaha U1 upright pianos including one American Walnut U1 that is amazingly rare., I counted them. I played them, I loved them, and I actually wound up getting lucky enough to be at the store when the one that I ultimately bought came in through the back door. Hence, not giving it anytime for it to put up on the website. That is the used piano business. Especially with such a piano as the U1 Yamaha, one of the most popular upright pianos made by one of the most popular Piano manufacturers. Anoher thing, I checked the American Music World website, and I clearly see that it says to call the store, I think it is the responsibility of the conusmer to call the store to see if the specific item you are looking for is still in stock. If someone sees something on line, on their computer surfing the internet, one usually has the phone next to them, or some where adjacent to them and can easily make a three minute phone call, to determine if you should or shouldn't embark on such a taxing journey. I bought a used Yamaha U1 for a very resonable price, got free delivery, and two in home tunings also for free. So in my opinion you would be foolish to go to any other piano dealership and see their nominal inventory, when you can go to American Music World and find a piano that you will not only like but be in your family's budget. AMW's inventory is two stores large, and I am sure that they will have something you will like. Thank you Rick, for helping me find a great deal! We just had a very old, very heavy, and very big piano moved from a family member's home to my daughter's 25 miles away. I cannot tell you how happy we are that we chose American Music World. From my initial call to Rick to another call to him to schedule to the actual pickup and delivery today, he provided nothing but the best customer service possible. My sister-in-law called me to tell me how smoothly the pickup went and how pleasant both Rick and his helper (Sean) were. I saw that for myself as they got the piano in place in my daughter's home, with no damage to either home or to the piano. If you're looking for anger, confusion, and weapons grade frustration, feel free to shop (or try to) at American Music World. Drove for an hour and a half suffering through Mapquest before I finally found the place. No matter, I was determined to buy a piano THAT DAY. Only thing is, they don't do that whole, you know, "prices" thing. No prices anywhere and the woman in the showroom couldn't tell me any prices. She got the owner on the phone and we went through a tell-me-which-one-you-like-and-we'll-talk-about-it thing (which, when you're looking at pianos that might be as much as fifteen grand is kind've a big goddamn waste of time?) Stood there with my range of three to four thousand (willing to spend even more if I fell in love) and wasn't able to buy. Let that sink in: A customer wants to spend upwards of four thousand dollars in your store, and you make it as difficult as possible for him to do it. If that makes sense as a business model, you're a smarter man than I am Charlie Brown. If I could give them less than a zero rating I would. Wasted my day off for absolutely nothing! read more

This is a long overdue review - we had a terrific experience buying our piano at American Music World last year. The piano we bought there still gets played every day and is a beautiful addition to our house. We were in the market for a good used piano since my daughter was beginning piano lessons. I did my research and determined that we wanted to find a Yamaha U-1. We looked around at a couple other places that either did not have a U-1 in good condition or were overpriced. We found American Music World on the internet and I called Rick. I told him what we were looking for and he described two U-1s he had in stock over the phone - giving me their model year, describing their condition, and quoting me a price for each. Relying on his descriptions we made the trek out to Elmhurst with our kids right then. When we arrived, Rick greeted us and showed us the pianos he had described. I really appreciated that they were exactly as he had described them - one was in better condition than the other, just as Rick had described. Both sounded great. Rick gave us time to try them out, to look around, and he answered all our questions. And the prices were materially lower than equivalent pianos at stores in Chicago. We bought the piano right then and arranged for delivery that week. Delivery was another great experience with Rick and his assistant - they arrived on schedule. It was amazing how adept they are at getting an extremely heavy piano up porch steps and through a front door. The process was painless and quick. It's now been nearly a year and the piano has held up great. If you're in the market for a used piano, I highly recommend buying from American Music World. read more

I just finished a consignment transaction with A M W. From the very beginning pormises were never kept. The piano movers came to our house and demanded more payment than the aggreement we had with the store manager. We were promised internet picture postings of the piano and it showed on the internet months and months later. Whenever I called they didn't know who I was! Now after two years of consignment we have a sale and I have no proff of what the sale was and they won't produce the needed paperwork!!! Live and learn! read more

I used Rick to move my baby grand three times. Each time I was quoted a different price for the same piano. I recently contacted him about moving again and he said great it'll be $350. He shows up 45 minutes late and once we arrive to the location says he's charging me an extra $50 because it was two more stairs than mentioned. Rick and the other guy helping, scratched and dented my wall, left dirt all over and refused to clean up after. I mentioned the fact I've used them three times and he said he wouldn't leave me hanging and would send someone to clean and tune the piano a few days later then I never heard from him again. I would give 0 stars if it were possible. I found a piano that they had listed on eBay which I called them about. They told me about another great piano Boston piano they had. So I travelled from Columbus Oh to Chicago to come and take a look at it. Mind you I am almost 7 months pregnant. I saw the piano on Sunday, said I was interested and waited for Rick to send the quote and pictures. He finally sent the quote on Wednesday. I emailed him back with a few questions and he never responded. I called Friday to say I wanted the piano and he proceeds to tell me that he sold it. No call to let me know this was happening and to let me have the option of buying it on the spot. He was very wishy washy about it but said they put a deposit down on the piano. Something that I was never offered. He told me he didn't want to sound like a used cars salesmen so he didn't mention it. When we looked at it He did mention that this piano had been sitting there for months so not to worry. So I asked to call me to let me know that it was sold for sure so I could know what to do next. Rick went MIA, no follow up calls, no emails. Pretty amazing they are still in business with this lack of customer service. So I had to call again to see the status although I wouldn't consider ever doing business with them again. Rick was sorry and said he was going to send me a gift certificate to a really nice dinner due to the inconvience (Flights, hotel and a $100 uber ride to the suburbs). Shockingly enough I have never seen a gift certificate. Once again horrible customer service. If you want to waste a lot of time and money I would do business with them if you want excellent customer service I would go elsewhere. read more

well, just to respond briefly to "Kate A"s review. No, I did not go to a different store. I went to the American Music World store on Roosevelt Rd. My point was not that this store didn't have a small selection (about 20-25 used uprights, many of them real low-end, but with a few really nice ones mixed in like a $5,000 Kawai) But rather that they simply did not have the particular used pianos (Yamaha U1 for example) that their website clearly claims they have in store. Unfortunately, their website has still not been updated, and to me that's not a helpful, open, customer-friendly way to do business in used pianos. I just don't understand why they can't keep their site updated to reflect their actual inventory? These are expensive items, and there weren't that many in the whole store to keep track of. I drove all the way out to the store on Roosevelt Rd. and saw for myself! I learned that the store is indeed a distributor of used Yamaha pianos, and that they can order one for you, but that's not exactly what the website says, and it was disappointing to drive all the way out to the store and not be able to actually play a good used Yamaha upright, when the American Music World website indicated I could. My humble opinion is that their website should reflect their actual used upright inventory, and should always be kept up to date. It is misleading. I respect that fact that this American Music World store has a good reputation with many customers and has been there for years. read more
