I am so disappointed in their new system for checking hemoglobin. Instead of the finger prick, they are doing an automated system that slips over your left thumb. The trick is to keep your thumb WARM, otherwise you will fail. You are given 2 attempts at this. They also offer "hot hands" mini heating pads to help keep finger warm. However, the last two times I've come and used this method, I have failed both times due to a low reading and was not able to donate either time. It is such a waste of my time and money coming here for nothing. I highly suggest they go back to the finger stick method. I will be contacting higher ups about this issue. I want to continue donating blood. This new way makes it impossible. I never had any issues before

I like coming here to donate blood. I like the do the rapid fast pass and then see if I'm able to donate blood. The people are kind and helpful. It is quick and easy. Then after there is a small break and tasty snacks and water.

IV INFILTRATION DUE TO STAFF INCORRECTLY INSERTING NEEDLE IN MY VEIN.
    Sara R.

I used to go to this location every month for the past year to donate platelets until the IV infiltrated my arm. All my donations have gone so smoothly and maybe the phlebotomist that put the needles in me wasn't experienced enough. On November 3, 2024 I went to my 10:30am appointment. I was seen by Karina and she was nice as most of the staff are. After the machine started up all the staff went into their station. I felt something off on my right arm, like something popped then started to feel pressure on my arm about a minute or so the Apheresis machine started to beep. Two techs came to help me and Karina just stood up from here station and asked what happened Sara? Never even went to check on me. The one tech looked at my arm and I saw her face looked worried and quietly said you're going to bruise and I saw my inside elbow was swollen like fluid built up and my fingers were tingly and my arm was in so much pain. The other tech said I'm not going to sugar coat your arm is going to bruise. I asked what happened and they said I either moved or the needle was put in wrong. I sure as hell didn't move as I know not to especially after a year of successful donations. They told me to ice first 24 then Warm compress next 24 hours. The other tech took my info down and said someone would call me. They just left me in the waiting station and I ended up Googling what happened to my arm. I was really disappointed and scared that happened. I started to notice fluid build up in my bicep too. I could barely move my arm and had to drive home. I sent a picture to my PCP and she prescribed me antibiotics and ibuprofen and suggested I get a tetanus shot just in case. It's been almost two weeks now and my right arm is fully engulfed with a bruise. I am so self conscious to wear short sleeves and had to purchase long sleeves to cover my arm. It really has affected my day to day life and my arm is still a bit tender. Red Cross ended up calling me and offered to reimburse me for any medical related expenses. But it's become such a traumatic experience I unfortunatley can never donate again. Hope Red Cross can train their staff to properly handle these type of situations and have fully trained staff. I'll try and update when it's fully healed.

    Donation all complete :)

I donated here yesterday & I just have to say I was very impressed with the woman that assisted me. She got my vein in her first attempt & I am so glad that she didn't have to go fishing around in there to find it (that shit hurts when they do that) despite that good part I'm not gonna lie though I was a little upset. I had to wait a long time to be helped, but there was other there before me which is understandable but & I had to wait waaaay past my appointment time & they don't allow anyone else inside with you if they're not going to donate (babe had to wait in the car) It is what it is though especially during these times of Covid where social distancing needs to be maintained & many places have to enforce the number of people inside of their establishment. None the less though I'm happy to see that this place is spotless clean, the staff was kind, I feel great after donating (hoping my blood ends up going to a kindhearted person(s) & not some racist hating asshole, by the way in case it does you're welcome) & I'm happy to not have left with a messed up arm. Good job & shout out to my Leo sista that has her birthday a day after mine. #BlackLivesMatter #BrownLivesMatter #AllLivesMatter

Do they still do antibody testing? Why not?

I'm sorry, Roland. They are no longer doing the COVID antibody testing. It was done in part to collect convalescent plasma, but there is not a need for it at this time.

Does Red Cross pay for plasma "donations"? If so, how much?

The Red Cross and other blood banks that collect blood/platelets/plasma for patients do NOT pay for donations. I might recommend searching for *selling plasma*. Hope that helps.

Do they offer Spanish CPR classes?

I'm not sure, but you can find out more information about the classes here:… Read more

Long time donor, first time reviewer…read more Honestly, I should have reviewed the good people at UCI Health Blood Donor Center many years ago. This is my bad. You see, I have been donating platelets here at close to a monthly basis for about a decade. I've lost count at the total number of donations, but I eclipsed the 4-gallon mark over a year ago. I am a lifelong Dodgers fan that was talked into a whole blood donation by a coworker at a UCI-run Angels blood drive event. I know - Dodger Blue at an Angels event. God forbid. But even wearing that Dodgers cap, I was warmly welcomed by the UCI crew on their donor bus. The bus was awesome, and the process went well, and they asked if I might want to donate platelets the next time. I had no idea, at the time, of the importance and necessity of platelet donations - even more than whole blood. They are used in many important ways for cancer and trauma patients of all ages, and have a very short shelf life; they must be used within 5-days. As the only certified Level I adult trauma center and Level II pediatric trauma center in Orange County, UCI are always in need platelets and whole blood, especially now. So sure...take my Dodger blue platelets, please. (And yes, per my pic, there are Raiders platelets in that bag too.) I saw one complaint on Yelp about the phones not being answered here. Sometimes it happens when the place gets busy, and I have had to call in a couple of times before to get someone, sure. I wouldn't doubt that had that gentleman explained the situation and asked for validated parking, he might have received it. Maybe not in his case, I don't know, but I can confirm that the Blood Donor Center pays for your parking when you donate; even if your numbers aren't up to snuff and your donation is not accepted on that visit...they cover you. And they have some nice thank you gift cards or vouchers in appreciation of their donor's time as well. I don't do it for the free stuff. I do it because it's the right thing to do and it brings me joy, and this is a great place to do it. There is a very long list of good people who run the location, and I am certain to miss more than I will mention here, but kudos go to all, from the guy at the top, Dr. Tran, to the teams who take your donations, Mic Mic, Tina, Angelo, Alejandra, Axel, Joseph and Jeff, and those too who moved on but made the place great over the years, like Kim, Danny and Pam...they are all amazing, caring people, who appreciate their donors and treat us well. Special shout out to Ann Marie, who motivates donors to give their blood and platelets - she's always fun to talk to, despite her ill-advised sports allegiances. We are helping to save lives and these people facilitate that effort well. What more can you ask for? There are lots of options out there to donate your blood or platelets, and I have been to a few in my day, but this has been and will continue to be my go-to donor center. Book an appointment with them, in confidence, today. Thank you for your donation!

I paid up front over Venmo, feeling comfortable with it because of his good reputation on here. And indeed he did not disappoint. Andre showed up to my house exactly on time. He went over the instructions of the kit for the test I was having done, and already knew what to expect. He asked the right questions - "Are there ice packs with this one?" "Does it need to be centrifuged?" He was even such a pro he knew which cabinet door held my garbage can without looking. The poke itself was right on the money, nearly painless, and without complication. He took the kit with him to do the postal dropoff himself - it was included with his services. One less thing for me to have to do, which was appreciated. We shook hands, said goodbye, and that was that. He did not solicit me for a Yelp review. A lot of service providers will offer deals to customers in hopes of scamming their way into a good review - it's a red flag whenever I see it and it makes me mad for having wasted time reading reviews that were essentially bought. But Andre didn't do that at all, which is why I immediately got on my computer to write him a review anyway. He earned his reviews by being good at what he does. I'd use him again anytime.

It was a busy Friday night, yet the staff treated my father with urgency, dignity, and genuine compassion. What could have been a chaotic and impersonal experience instead felt human and attentive. After we arrived, the ER team worked tirelessly -- not just medically, but administratively -- coordinating with insurance, social workers, and case management. When my father became stuck in the ER due to complications with his prior facility refusing readmission, the UCLA team did not give up on him. They continued advocating, communicating, and ultimately helped secure placement in a better facility after nearly a week in limbo. That level of follow-through meant everything to our family. I especially want to recognize Nurse Claire in the ER. Her kindness and humanity were extraordinary. She gave my father blankets, made sure he was comfortable, and even offered me blankets, food, and water during a long and emotional night. She cleaned my father up with such care and dignity. After 10 hours of uncertainty, she brought calm, reassurance, and genuine bedside compassion that I will never forget. I also want to thank Dr. Carson Dangberg for advocating for my father during a very unfortunate situation. His professionalism and willingness to step in made a real difference. In one of the hardest moments for our family, this ER team reminded us that healthcare can still be compassionate and patient-centered. We are deeply grateful.

I had also let them know about the previous hospital, Emanate health in West Covina, how one of the nurses asked my daughter if they found her situation "funny" and how my 5 year old daughter and I found that comment from a health worker odd and the surgeon that I asked gave me the reassurance that that question was NOT okay, there was a team around us and every single one gave us reassurance that that behavior was unacceptable.
