My family received American Spoon's Complete Pancake Breakfast for Christmas. It included a bag of pancake mix, two jars of fruit toppings (sour cherry and blueberry), and a jar of their maple syrup. I hadn't previously heard of the company and didn't know what to expect. It turns out that their pancakes, fruit toppings, and maple syrup are exceptional! We were really impressed and the quality was excellent! Delicious and highly recommended. Unfortunately the promo photo that came with the kit shows a disgusting stack of lopsided pancakes that are drowning in fruit toppings. It's not aesthetically pleasing or even remotely appetizing. Purchased the Christmas Cheeries for $20 for two small jars and finally got around to making it today. Total disappointment for a very expensive product that didn't live up to the expectations. Pie turned out ok because I know how to bake, but the pie was a total disappointment. Guests left most on their plate and I ended up throwing it out. American Spoon produces and sells the BEST jams, butters, salsas, conserves, and all condiments on the planet!!! Special note: get the ketchup and Bloody Mary mix - you will fall in love. The product does cost a premium, but you won't be disappointed. I wish they would expand down and around to Chicago and Wisconsin... Quick update... the whole mustard seeds are incredible. I support the local food thing, I do. And generally, I am happy to pay a lot of money for seriously good stuff. And I tried the local sour cherries from a nearby fruit stand. HOLY COW! Tart. Bursting. Delicate. Bright. Beguiling, even? And then I try American Spoons Sour Cherry products, and it just misses, in my book. Too much sugar and too much heat kills the delicacy of the fruit. I mean... I know it's got to be shipped all over the country, and be made in quantity, etc. etc. I just don't see all the fuss or why you would pay the tariff for such a thing. It's like the salt water taffy or maybe even fudge of jam shops (if that makes ANY sense). It is nice that they have a big tasting bar. It was less nice that some of the crackers tasted rancid. What I love about American Spoon Foods is the tasting bar in the middle of the shop. You can sample a few dozen jams, curds, salsas, and toppings. Don't see what you want to try? Just ask! They'll open up a new jar of whatever you want to sample. The red haven peach preserves are amazing. I'm seriously addicted. Also love the rhubarb, blueberry, and cherry jams. I think they shine in the jams vs salsas. The odd thing about their store is that if you live in Michigan it's cheaper to buy downstate in a specialty grocery store! Very odd, as you would think it would be cheaper at the source. You can hardly go wrong with anything you get here though. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! First of all, the store is ridiculous. So cute and little. It's filled with homemade jams, jellies, preserves, butters, salsa, dried cherries, crackers...and crack. You can watch them make everything by their little demo station at the back of the store. All natural ingredients and cutely packaged. In the middle of the store they have a little tester section where you can try said goodies. I tried the apple butter and nearly passed out. It was amazing!!! I bought 3 little jars, one of the apple butter (obviously), 1 red raspberry perserve and 1 rhubard marmalade. I almost bought the mango habanero salsa, but I didn't and now im sad. You can get cute little gift boxes or they will pack it for you (since most of their clients are prolly tourists). When I went to pay I asked if they could pack it and their response was "Sure, our pleasure." Awesome. Buying all natural (or even organic) jams and stuff, can sometimes be a crap-shoot. But these were refreshing and looked delicious! American Spoon, you have my heart. read more

First, pay no attention to the review of a restaurant posted on this site. There is an associated restaurant where they use Spoon products but this page is for the retail store. We have a summer cottage in Petoskey and have been patronizing American Spoon Foods for years. It is absolutely incredible stuff -- local fruits, artisanal recipes, small batches. You can taste test the products in the store, and each year when we go , our biggest problem is trying to narrow down our choices. For the uninitiated, a few of my favorites. Early Glow Strawberry Jam is hands down the best jam I have ever tasted. These low-yield strawberries have such intense, almost dark flavor. Red Haven Peach is also a winner. Anything with cherries can't be beat, since that is one of the local specialties, but I especially love the cherry and cranberry mustards. They are terrific on a sandwich or as a sauce with fish or chicken. We like to buy a case at Christmastime (free shipping if you buy a case) and give them for all of those little gifts - coworkers, teachers, etc. - where you want to get something special for not a lot of money. read more

I love American Spoon! Before coming to Petosky, my boyfriend always told me I'd love this store, and man was he right! This place is like a food lovers paradise - so many free samples!!! You could get a whole meal with all the crackers, jams, and salsas. Everything I tasted was delicious, especially the spoon fruit stuff!! I ended up leaving with some fruit jam, fig preserves, and their vanilla maple syrup (it literally had a vanilla bean in it and it is my new addiction). This store is so cute! It's very cozy an homey with an assortment of relish, jelly, salsa, etc etc. There are tons of open jars for you to sample before you buy. My first visit, I bought a jar of salsa, a jar of mushroom relish, and orange thai bbq sauce. They run around $10/jar. This store is perfect for the Up North goer looking for something special to bring back for either themselves or as a gift. I went into the American Spoon hoping to find a thank you gift for some neighbors taking care of our house while we were gone. I left, absolutely impressed by the quality of the food. The flavors alone will make you moan with delight and I really liked the overall feeling of the place...the decor, the packaging, it's all so quaint but yet modern. Just trust me. It's a gem of Petoskey. I sampled the various jams and jellies and my favorite was the Tart Cherry. The cherry flavor is so bright and has this great sweet/tart note that has a great balance to it. It's sweet without being too heavy and that's just right in my book. I also really enjoyed the dried cherries. Cherries are after all, the area's specialty so I was focused on my gift featuring cherries since it is what this area of Northern Michigan is known for. I noticed two things as I was checking out...a James Beard award, apparently that was won many years ago and a trophy next to their big seed mustard. I guess it just won this year, I'll have to go back and give it a try another time. They do have a website, so check that out if you can't make the drive. You may not be able to sample the offerings but you can get an idea of what they offer or if you're feeling brave, can order blind without trying it! If you are in the Petoskey area, stop in and give it a try...I challenge you to leave empty handed! read more

We stopped here while visiting Petoskey. We stopped at the little store, not the restaurant. This store has several different kinds of jams, jelly, fruit butters, salsas, grilling sauces.....and in the center is a little sampling table with all different kinds to try. I got some mango butter. Prices to me, are a little high, like $10 for salsa, $8 or $9 for jams.....I did get some, and they are good, but I don't know if they are $9 good. When we got back, I found American Spoon jams and jellies at a nearby market. I live over 250 miles from Petoskey, and at the market here, they were over $1.25 less per jar. To me, it seems Petoskey store marks up, because of tourists. I would pay $7.49 here, for the same kind in Petoskey was $8.95. read more

I did not fully appreciate American Spoon Foods until it became more difficult to acquire! I am contemplating a road trip to get some pancake mix and some cherry-peach salsa. The cherry peach salsa alone would be the worth the day's drive to Petsokey! American Spoon Foods features a nice selection of "spoon" foods and a few dry goods. The jams/jellies are fantastic but, like I said, the cherry peach salsa is on another level. The pancake mix is the greatest comfort food. Even though my love for those two things is extreme, I can't say I've had a bad product from this company! Exceptional stuff! This stuff is amazing and has mail order! But who wants to wait!? You can pick up some of their products at specialty grocerys--like Whole Foods--but it's hit and miss at best! read more

I was looking forward to making several purchases at the store in Petoskey. I had visited the store in Saugatuck a few years ago and loved the items. When I entered, the clerk there shooed us away with no explanation. There were 2 other people in the store at the time so obviously it wasn't busy. I didn't realize it at the time but there was a small sign that said "4 at a time". Since I was with my 2 daughters it would have been 5 in the store not including the rude clerk. An explanation would have been nicer than the waving of the hand like shooing away a pesky fly. I won't shop there again and I hope that management trains their employees in the future to not be rude to customers. read more

I love American Spoon! My boyfriend and I vacation every year at his family's lake house in Cheboygan and we always make a trip to Petoskey to walk around and shop and of course, go to American Spoon. Their stuff is moderately priced to expensive-ish, running $8-$12 or so per jar, but I think it's worth it. Everything is delicious, adorably packaged, and the flavors are generally unique (especially the savories - my favorites are the apple & onion jam and the dried chile salsa). Also, the store employees are so friendly and nice and helpful. And the store itself is so cute. AND you can try all the jams/jellies/sauces/etc before you buy! I know my review isn't really saying anything new but I want everyone to know how awesome American Spoon is! read more

This is the sort of place that Michigan could use more of. Michigan foodstuffs that you may or may not have grown up with. I appreciate how it's focused on the things that Michigan has done well agriculture-wise for ever: cherries, preserves, apples, the like. It manages the perfect balance between touristy and authentic; the number of Petoskey-ers inside and next door eating gelato and lunch is a testament to that. If you want a comparison think Great Traverse Pie Company but more genuine - and better! read more

After viewing the menu posted outside American Spoon, I knew *exactly* what I was having for lunch. Bright and airy inside, with a slight whiff of elitism. Everything is made from scratch and priced accordingly. That said, I'd go back in a heartbeat. My companion and I found our fried chicken sandwiches (described above) incredibly delicious. Tender, perfectly seasoned. Wonderful melding of savory flavors. My accompanying side of green bean salad was similarly delicious. The gazpacho was so fresh -- great for a warm summer day. Daniel- I understand if some of the products were not to your liking, but i just wanted to clear up some facts. Forgive me for sounding like a sales person for a minute, but I do sell gourmet food products for a living and I am very familiar with American Spoon. They actually put very little sugar in their products- so little in fact the their preserve BARELY qualifies as a preserve because it doesn't have enough sugar. They put about a pound of fruit in every jar and I think sometimes people confuse the intense flavor of a fruit-rich product for something that has a high sugar content. Their other product line, Spoon Fruit, doesn't have any added sugar at all but is sweetened with fruit juice instead for a clean, tart flavor. Perhaps that would have boon more to your liking. read more

My cousin that lives in the area highly recommended the food here, but unfortunately we were unable to try it because the hostess was SO rude. Some of us locals and some us visiting, we were trying to figure out if we were going to wait or go somewhere else in order to maximize our shopping time while in Petoskey. There was a misunderstanding within our group regarding who spoke to the hostess the first time and who was speaking the second time we came in as to whether or not we had put our name in already. The server we spoke to letting her know we were back went to get the hostess who promptly came over and was condescending and extremely rude. I am not sure if she thought we were trying to pull a fast one and cut the list, which we were not, but she was snapping at us about we could get on the list this time but we would have to wait just like she told the first time. Also, scolding us for coming in and lying to the server...? My sister and I had to step in tell her to calm down that there was clearly a misunderstanding within our group and she was misinterpreting what was going on. She continued on, so we said we will support local business elsewhere..thanked her and left. There are a lot of other cute places to eat that would love to have your business in Petoskey...go where you dollar is appreciated. As a nice closer, we walked out to her hollering at us that it was the lunch hour and we are going to wait anywhere in town(insert smart a*s tone here.) Well that is a lie because we walked right into another place, sat down immediately, had a delightful meal and service. If Michigan is going to push so hard for tourism and people to come visit the state, the locals should be welcoming the business with open arms. We also wanted gelato at the end of the hot day and made a point to not give AS our business and went elsewhere. Thank you for making our decision on where to eat much easier. read more

I went in to the American Spoon at the Grand Traverse Resort over the weekend. I have always loved their products. The young women working there was the most unfriendly sales person I've encountered in ages. I was the only person in the store and I spoke immediately upon entering. She never spoke one word period the entire time I was there... No hello, goodbye, nice day , thanks absolutely nothing. She couldn't work one second in my store and with the most sour look in her face. I forgot something I wanted to purchase, as I only got one thing, but refused to go back in !!!! read more
