Went to Into the Woods outside at Demens Landing. Been to several of the outdoor plays before and was surprised the crowd was smaller. Not a well known show outside the theatre world. The show, although well done was really long (first act was 90 minutes). Lots of people left at intermission. Maybe not the best choice of a play for your big outdoor, fundraising show. First time coming here and I am hooked! There is nice little bar for drinks before the show, with numerous tables. The theatre itself is wonderful. Nice and small, with not a bad seat in the house. There is enough pitch that the people in front of me were not blocking my view. The seats are probably the most comfortable I have ever sat in a theatre. The show was Disgraced and the story line and acting were excellent. I look forward to coming here for future shows. read more

Every element of the play worked in perfect sync. The 110 minute intermission-less play goes by with the quickness. The momentum builds as the spectacular cast of seven actors sing and dance and play a total of 42 characters with a plethora of accents. The play vividly chronicles the birth of Sholem Asch's Yiddish "God of Vengeance " where the daughter of a Jewish brothel owner falls in love with one of her father's prostitutes. It was not the worse play I have been to but it definitely was not the best either. Not the best timing for this play with all that is going on in the at present. Wow my experience with American Stage was simply amazing. Right now they have their Gala Under the Stars. This means their show Footloose the Musical is Playing at Demon's Landing Park on the waterfront in Downtown St. Pete through May 8, 2022. It was Pets in the Park Night when we went since the Community Celebration Partner was The New Barker Magazine. Just think watching a fun, silly, musical with Footloose music with your dog Furbaby under the stars. What a great night full of laughter, reliving some music from childhood, and enjoying the nice night weather. This was definitely a memorable experience! Mocha Coconut can add seeing an amazing musical off his to do list! Lol! read more

The park/waterside venue was great. The lights and sound were impressive for it being outdoors. The show I saw, "Hair," had a nice interactive element with the crowd too. My first dalliance with American Stage was Mama Mia in the park in 2019. After a long 2020 void of theatre, their return in 2021 was one of the highlights for my entire year. The performers and volunteers bring their A game every time. I have loved every cast immensely. And the costuming, set design, and lighting equally so. (Did you know the folks that usher, take tickets etc... are volunteers?? Now you do.) The play badly missed the message of the original Hair which had a beautiful and important message of the time. This version had a focus on gay sex. That's fine in another play. That was not the original message in Hair. Thr original was about love, war, and hope for the future. They missed it badly. And the lead singer tended to scream the music rather than sing. Overheard people mentioning this at an outdoor coffee spot and was thrilled I went. The cast was awesome, really impressed at the set and lighting and costume design. What a lovely organization! I've only once been inside their venue (long ago), so this review is about their most recent Play in the Park series, Mamma Mia. It was an enjoyable evening with a great little show. We went to the "pay what you can" night and enjoyed the play. You can see lots of work being done by the stage hands, lighting professionals and actors, as they prepare for the debut. The whole series being outside is pretty cool! Demen's Landing is the perfect spot for this. Kid friendly, picnic basket friendly, good-time friendly! I recommend this play! read more

American Stage has hit a new low. Supporter for over 25 years. Quit going to productions maybe 4 years ago when they became political. Always enjoyed "In The Park" as they were family, uplifting and joyful. The same bad influence that has ruined the theater plays has now festered itself to ruin the "In The Park" series..... Don't waste your time or money. We need a good community theater. Shocked that Raymond James and others still sponsor this crap. There are 3 other community theaters that have awesome performances. This cute local venue consistently produces thoughtful and entertaining theater. Every season is something new and different. The space itself is intimate, making every seat a good seat in the house. The staff is friendly and helpful. The service at the concessions bar is always fabulous. I have never had a problem parking at this location, but I usually park across the street in a paid parking lot. It's four dollars for four hours, which is plenty of time to have dinner and see a show. I have been here twice to see the Scott and Patty cabaret shows, and they have both been entertaining to the core. I can't wait to go back and see more theater. read more

Probably the cutest theatre stage I have ever been to. It is not your typical seating layout. The audience seating is shaped like an "L" therefore you really feel like your IN the play. We are such huge fans of American Stage. We used to be season pass holders, then babies came and we gave up our subscriptions. But now that our kids are older we try to see as many plays as possible and never miss American Stage in the Park. The new theater location is very nice and there is not a bad seat in the house. The intimate feel of the old American Stage theater has not been lost, although I do miss the cool outside courtyard from the old location. American Stage does offer light concessions before the play and during intermission. read more

This is an awesome theater with a great director that introduces people to important social issues that continue to impact society. She has intuitive insight in choosing plays that challenge the way we see the world and make us look at ourselves and the role we play as human beings. Some plays leave you feeing happy, hopeful, ambitious and others questioning human nature and realizing just how complex we are. She has exceptional talent for choosing the right acting team for each play and the actors appear to flourish under her direction . They have excellent talent and bring the story alive with their performances. They do a wonderful job with the sets, lighting, sound and costumes . When I arrived today for the 2 p.m. matinee of "The People Downstairs" at the American Stage in St. Petersburg, I was informed that it had been cancelled 45 minutes before showtime for vague reasons involving what they claimed was one cast member. (Covid? Non-Covid? They didn't seem sure. It appeared that they were hiding a secret.) They also did not seem genuinely sorry to have had people show up for NOTHING, and THE E-MAIL MESSAGE THAT THEY SENT TO TICKETHOLDERS had a time stamp of 1:19 p.m. for the 2 p.m. show, saying that they were cancelling due to "an abundance of caution" (sounds like Covid to me) for one cast member. (I arrived at the theater at 1:15 p.m.) What, there are no understudies? Then the manager ran off, leaving it to the UNMASKED ticket taker (despite their claims to REQUIRE MASKS by theatergoers throughout the entire performance) to deliver the bad news. They said that they could not process my refund until later, and then they proceeded to write down all of my credit card information on a piece of paper, potentially compromising it. When I called over three hours later about my refund, they said that they had a software issue that was preventing the transaction from going through. They had no trouble taking my money, but somehow they can't return it. I have had enough disappointments during the pandemic, and I certainly did not need another. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a ticket to this miserable place. read more

I just attended this year's American Stage in the Park "Hairspray". My friends and I have been going to this event for nearly 20 yrs when it originally started as Shakespeare in the Park. Most years are fantastic and this is why it has become a yearly tradition that we love and look forward to. But every now and again we experience a sub par event and unfortunately this year was one of those years. The pros: The show itself was great, the cast was amazing and did a superb job even when faced with unexpected technical issues. The cons: 1. The regular parking lot was not available due to it being for vip parking for rowdies patrons only. This meant that even though we had a handicap parking permit we were forced to park almost 8 blocks away. And still had to pay $5. This was the first year we have experienced this and will certainly factor in to our choices for future events. 2. The ground for blanket seating was infested with fire ants. We had them crawling all over the blankets and us, this made for a less than enjoyable experience to say the least. The ground should have been properly treated before having the public (with children) sitting on the ground with very active fire ants everywhere. Their idea of treatment was to place a cardboard box over the ant hill. 3. The chair seating was not positioned as it normally is with rows placed at an angle or vertical as pictured in their seating chart on the website (and as it has in past years). Instead the multiple rows were extended horizontal all the way in front of the stage and directly in front of the blanket seating. This meant that we were unable to lay down on our blanket and enjoy the show. We were forced to sit completely upright for the entire production in order to be able to see. This was uncomfortable and prevented us from being able to relax. In prior years you could easily lay down, prop yourself up on a couple of pillows and enjoy the show. Why would you put 10+ rows of chairs directly in front of people sitting on the ground? This year we spent the evening trying to not get bit by fire ants and dealing with a sore back from not being able to change our positions all night in order to see. Overall it was a disappointment. I hope that in future years they go back to how they operated before. I would hate to lose such a wonderful yearly tradition. read more

First let me say I have previously loved American Stage performance in the park, but tonight, not so much. $90.00 for 3 tickets at the gate. And the seating is pathetic! That's apparently not the price to be able to sit in the middle section of the lawn! You have to sit behind the chairs and stall on the grass. American Stage is the embodiment of St. Petersburg. I love small stage productions and theirs are always very well done. I have purchased season tickets for family members and always try to attend one or two shows a year. I truly enjoy the American Stage in the Park events. Parking is easy and there is always somewhere to go after a show in The Burg. I only hope that younger people will start to frequent the theater - the last time I was there, I thought I was the youngest person there! :) read more

As a longtime season pass holder I've had the good fortune of having seen the outstanding artistry and talent that American Stage offers.
