I'm a big fan of popping in here on weekdays over weekends. There's so much stuff and not a ton of room so it's really rad when you snag an off-peak moment to peruse. There's a shop cat, Charlie, that I've never seen leave the comfy chair in back and the owner, Heather, who is coolAF and actually super young- which is not typically what you'd expect from the owner of an antique and odd art shop. There's jewelry, Knick knacks, LOTS of art, of course. Many originals and if Heather is there she can magically tell you the origin story of the art and artist for EVERYTHING in the shop... and there's like 3000 things in the shop. Like any antique shop, it can be hot or miss and there's often piles or cramped aisles but that's called having character in the antique biz (I don't actually know that, just guessing) and I feel right at home here.

So far, I have found most items to be fairly priced, with several higher ticket surprises that made me laugh out loud. But pricing is not on the owner. It's on the renter. On that note, unkempt rental spaces are an eyesore and probably impact newcomers returning, or business reviews. Also, if I have to "dig" through boxes, I'm not buying. I encourage sellers to display everything & make all wares easily accessible to a potential buyer. People come in to purchase. You want to sell your stuff? Don't make them dig and sweat over a box to find vintage linen napkins. Seriously. That said, I've found and purchased an array of items here I have enjoyed very much. One challenge is finding one that has the right mix of "treasures". Antique shops that have a lot of dishes, glassware, and sterling silver utensils don't interest me. I do like larger stores that offer individually owned bays of merchandise. 3 Magpies is it's own family operated shop, which I enjoyed a recent visit. It's like an onion as there are many layers to places like this. And it will be a new onion the next time I visit. It was fun to look around this nicely curated shop: up, down, across, and under. I ended up with a small specialty vintage Soviet "knife" for the collection. Not a bad haul for such a too short visit.

This time around, the selection is heavier on the furniture and less so on "accessories". We liked some things quite a bit, but our remaining room in the car and the inner voice saying "do we really need this" and "where would we put it" won out. Gayle did notice a cool and well priced art piece that we should have jumped on immediately. Unfortunately, it had already been sold by the time I returned the next day.

And, again pleasantly surprised, there was another store I have not spotted from the car. Between the coffee place and the shop on the corner is another store, I think, is an absolute must when visiting this part of town. For those who visit this might be a little 'off the beaten track.' Most people might go straight to Main Street and end up on "The Plaza,' but there's more to charming Ashland. I have a feeling one should almost be 'in the know' to end up on 4th street. Hence the face I'll review a few stores on this street. Being half Asian (Balinese to be precise) I was delighted to see 'Old World Artifacts, a name fitting to this store. It's like stepping into a different world, different south East Asian cultures combined with local art. Should you be in the area, I can highly recommend you to pay this store a visit. The owner, Franklin, is friendly and welcoming. No snobbish attitude I have often found in similar stores. Instead a man who loves to talk about his favorite places to visit and makes you feel at ease. My photographs will -hopefully- give an impression of the inventory of "Old World Artifacts." There's a plethora of artifacts from different Asian cultures. It feels like so much has been hand selected by Franklin on his travels. I heard him about Cambodia where he rode the bicycle; drop by to chat with this well-traveled man if you're interested in traveling to that part of the world and see what the culture has to offer. Not only Asian artifacts are for sale. When I walked in my eye instantly caught incredible art on the wall. It turns out thus is from local artist, Kat McIver. There's something deeply touching about her sculptures, they're all very different and I have added some pictures. I was told this artist works one day a week in this store. I saw big Buddha statues with a hefty price tag, which is totally justifiable and understandable knowing where it comes from. Having said that, I also saw rugs from turkey at a really great price for a good quality Turkish rug ($195 for a real Turkish rug is a steal). Being half Asian, half Dutch I'm aware of the prices of these rugs and I paid a lot more when living back home in Amsterdam. A set of locally made cards of $4. In other words: there's something for every budget. That's something I think is -especially in these times- a good thing. This store has only been open since October last year, so not too long. I will definitely be back on a regular base.

I wandered in last week during our return visit to Ashland (and OSF), starting with coffee across the street at Noble. Recycled (and curated) home decor is still the theme here and with stock contained inside and in the yard out back. I found a few things I could fit into the car on the way home and one or 2 others that would not. Oh well. But let's see what happens next time!

The guy was spending like 10-mins just explaining details about jewelry they sell to a customer who did not want to buy anything just for fun! The lady behind the counter who helped me was super friendly and nice. And she wrapped what I bought with a lot of care. I wish I lived in Ashland and could visit them more often. I bought a few of their beautiful leather bookmarks for myself, but they're going so fast because everyone loves them and wants one! I wish they had things they sell in their store on their website too, so I could order more bookmarks, but sadly that's not the case.
