Honestly, the staff here is so unfriendly and unhelpful that it doesn't really matter what the inventory is like, we don't want to shop there. Plus, despite apparently having the whole building to themselves, they don't offer customer restrooms, no matter how much shopping you have to do. One clerk brushed off my 8-months pregnant daughter's request for a restroom by suggesting she walk about a quarter mile up --and across -- a busy road to use the restroom at a McDonald's. The outside temp and humidity were both in the mid-90s. This company has zero sense of who their customer base is. They won't be getting out business in future. read more

Affordable Fabrics is still affordable. The employees are amazing. But ever since the pandemic, the selection has become terrible. I used to walk out with 20 yards of fabric every single time, finding print after print after print of fabric I had no immediate use for, but knowing I'd use it in something soon. Now, I struggle to find one print suitable for the project at hand. One employee told me it's because it's being sold online before it ever gets to the store. I looked online for this website, couldn't find it. So I'm stuck buying ugly fabric at an affordable price, or good looking fabric at an expensive price. I am sad. read more

Twice I've stopped in and they have been closed unexpectedly during regular hours. Is this place closed due to Covid? Or closed for good?

For the most part I like this store. I say that because sometimes they are hit or miss. They can have everything you want one day and nothing the next. You would really have to haunt the place to catch something really good b/c you never know what they will put out. At $2.99 a yard the good stuff disappears fast I do wish they rotated more. There is some fabric that has been out for over a year and doesn't seem to be being sold. Either that or they have so much they keep putting it out to get rid of. It could use a little redecorating to spruce up the place and not be so basement feeling, but the price of fabric may go up for the cost to redecorate so maybe not! The staff is friendly enough. I like the daytime staff better than the night time staff, but both equally friendly. Moral of the story don't come in with high hopes of finding exactly what you are looking for b/c it may not be there, but they may have something you weren't looking for and can't pass it up. You can always find thread, buttons, zippers and bias tape though! That's a plus! read more

I was so pleased with my first visit! The store has many different types of fabric, including a whole long wall full of quilting cotton, which is what I shopped for. I found a wide array of colors and lovely patterns. I think the quality is good, far better than I would expect for $2.99 a yard. In fact, I found fabrics from the collections of people like Amy Butler and Parson Gray. (A whole bolt of a Shaman collection fabric that I couldn't find on-line!) If you enjoy making charity quilts, this store will really help your budget. The store also carries notions such as zippers, bias tape, and thread. There is a little room with foam padding. Also, trim and strapping and more. The clerks in the store were extremely friendly and helpful. There is adequate parking. read more

Love this store! My mom can make just about anything fabric based you can think of, and we have to hit this store up everytime she visits the area. As mentioned before, everything is $1.99 a yard. This includes some really nice fabrics (Waverly anyone?) as well as some basic stuff. There is a section in the back for odds and ends and remnants, so cool things can be found there too. Reposting because it got previously removed but people need to be aware of what happened and how NOT OK this was! And to follow up that NO ONE ever reached out to apologize for anything that happened makes me sick! Today (5/20) my Mom, Aunt and myself went to Affordable Fabrics to pick out fabric for an area in my house that my Aunt is going to help me do and I've been excited for. We were in the store for a long time, we searched and searched for just the right fabric, we found it and figured out what we needed. We informed the guy working, who later we found out was supposedly the OWNER, that we had fabric upstairs and we weren't sure if he preferred to cut it upstairs or downstairs. He said with a not so friendly and tone that he was the only one working, normally has two people and had to cut it downstairs. We all offered to get it for it to be cut. He insisted on getting it. Then to keep the line moving and be HELPFUL I kept handing him fabric rolls to be cut because we had a lot between the three of us and others in line behind us. We explained we wanted to split it up, not realizing he was just jotting down on a piece of paper how many yards of each we were getting. My Aunt, trying to help figure it out, he very angry pushed the note pad at her and told her to figure it out herself because he couldn't . I told my mom I was going outside before I said something not so nice as he was being very rude. As I was in the parking lot my Aunt walked out and said the guy flipped out on her, ripped all the fabric out of her hands and threw it across the room and kicked her out!!!!! THEN a few minutes later my mom comes out and said the guy flipped out again and threw a bunch of stuff at her including a GIANT 8 INCH PAIR OF SCISSORS that missed her buy a few inches!!!!!! I obviously called the police and the store owner gave the same story that we did minus the scissor throwing part and explained he was HAVING A BAD DAY?!!?! I have NEVER been in a situation like this. I have NEVER had a bad day THAT much I would throw a weapon at a complete stranger that is SUPPORTING YOUR SMALL BUSINESS and not JoAnn fabrics or Walmart!!!! I am shocked and appalled at how irrational and psychotic this guy behaved!! My Aunt and Mom are the nicest people in the world and would literally give you the shirt off there back! WE DID NOTHING WRONG!!! WE DID NOTHING TO DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE THAT!!! The "owner" is CLEARLY mentally unstable and needs HELP!! I cannot help but feel empathetic to the fact that 1) He is a small business that has most likely been hit hard by the pandemic. 2) Clearly he is stressed out and short staffed 3) He needs help mentally and may not have access to getting help All that being said, thank god no one got hurt and I hope like fucking hell the next time he throws scissors at someone he doesn't actually stab them! This fabric store is a great find! Go here for any fabric you made need for reupholstering - indoor or outdoor fabrics. It's 2.99 a yard for indoor and they had 5.99 a yard for outdoor (was just at joanns before this and upholstery fabric was 20+ a yard!) Don't be worried about the low prices - from what I can tell the fabric is still great quality. We also bought some cording for .20$ a yard (other fabric stores have it for 3$ a yard!) I do wish they had a little bit of a large selections of colors and patterns - they do have a lot there, especially for clothing type fabric, but I wish there was a bit more to choose from. For those that said the people working there aren't friendly, I didn't find this to be true. The person I worked with was very helpful and didn't mind AT ALL that I only bought a yard or one of the fabrics. read more

I've been coming here since I was an infant-- it's literally a family tradition. I love how inexpensive the fabric is and I've always found the staff to be helpful. I know some people are unhappy with the quality but the fact is that's why the fabric is so cheap. Not everything is going to be completely pristine. But I've made a dozen costumes and twice as many articles of clothing with fabric from here and I've never run into anything that was a serious and legitimate issue. read more

2.99 a yard is amazing. Even the heavy home-deco fabrics, and the specialty fabrics, are 2.99. Their selection is good-- not like warehouse-enormous, but big enough for you to find what you need. I'm giving this one star because(you have to give at least one) although they have a big selection, the quality is poor. I recently purchased upholstery fabric and there were three huge tears in the fabric that there was no way that it wouldn't of been noticed by the woman rolling it up on the tube. Because I'm using this for blackout drapes(and I already made one set) I decided to sew up the smaller of the three rips in the fabric,which was a good 3 1/2" rip. Had the woman brought this to my attention (it is possible that she missed it,highly doubt it as the larger rip was 7") I would of went elsewhere. I will no longer be shopping there. The prices are great but you really get what you pay for! If you're looking to buy cheap fabric, then this is the place for you! read more

I went to Affordable Fabrics because THAT'S where I always buy my fabric. I looked in the upholstery fabric section because I needed fabric to make waterproof cushions. There was not a lot to choose from but there was one I was considering. They now have rolls of fabric that have replaced a section where upholstery fabric has always been. I found one there that was exactly what I wanted. IT WAS $10.99 A YARD! NOPE! This store advertises itself as a $2.99 a yard store EVERYTHING! If they can't buy it at a price they can resell it for $2.99 then they shouldn't have it in the store. The last time I was there the shelves of quilting fabric were almost bare. I asked if they were going out of business?! This time, same thing. I went to the one in Auburn, MA last year and their selection was amazing. I drove 20 miles for nothing. So disappointed. Also, I need to park in the handicapped space which are in the back of the building. Doors are locked, you have to walk to the front of the building! The four spaces in front should be designated handicapped if that's the new rule! People who don't have problems walking can park in the back! SO DISAPPOINTED. Not cool Affordable Fabrics! read more

Every single bit of yardage in the store is $1.99. Yep. And some of it is really good stuff. You'll have to search and dig... and much like going to the famous Strand Bookstore in NYC don't go there to find something specific that you need. They won't have it. No basics represented here. That said it's one of the greatest inexpensive mish-mashes of fabric I have ever seen. The quirkiness at this place really pushes your creativity buttons. Leave it to a city like Hartford to spawn this wonderful weirdness. I would do the drive just to pay a visit to this place. read more

There had been no incident about this store's service - - until today. The young lady who cut the numerous yardage of upholstery fabric and other items was very pleasant. She completed my purchase and left the counter to put back the items. Upon picking up the single bag, I realized it would be too heavy and would split the thin purple plastic bag. My crime was that I dared asked for an extra plastic bag. Another very, very young lady with darker, longer hair was so bothered that I asked for the extra bag. After a few moments of dirty looks and contorted facial hesitation, she double bagged my purchase and THREW THE BAG BACK across the table to me. It caused a huge thump on the cutting counter that faced the back entrance of the store, landing inches away from me instead of handing the bag back to me which, then, I had to reach over. There were witnesses of two senior female customers who were looking at the pattern catalog next to the cutting table. They stopped dead in their tracks with their mouths open to see such behavior in a sales person. As we were walking out, the customers said to me that they were aghast. I, very politely, said to the young lady that there was no need to have thrown the bag at me like that. She did not respond nor even looked at me. I was appalled at this treatment. Why aren't these sales ladies supervised in any way? She must be related to the store owner(s) to allow such absurd behavior to customers. It is such a shame to the other very professional and courteous workers. read more

I have been a long time customer of Affordable Fabrics, but unfortunately I had an experience tonight that completely destroyed my loyalty to this store. Over the course of the past decade I have easily spend $20k in the Rocky Hill store. I send everyone I meet in Joanns and other competitors to Affordable Fabrics; I have literally sent hundreds of new customers their way. After my experience tonight I will never spend another dime with this retailer, nor will I recommend anyone else does. I budgeted $200 for shopping tonight, knowing that there are several projects that I need to finish for the summer. Like most moms, I was in a situation where I had to bring my child to the store. He's 3 years old and was being very well behaved. Even though I had asked him several times before going to the store if he had to go to the bathroom, he declined each time. We were in the store for about 5 minutes when he announced he had to go to the bathroom and was going to have an accident. Typical 3 year old. I know the store doesn't have a public restroom; again I'm a long time customer. However, in this kind of a situation rules should be a bit more malleable. There was only one other customer in the store, so very little chance that anyone would notice he was using the restroom. I asked if he could run in and use theirs quickly to avoid a mess. The staff refused to allow him to use their restroom, even though it was clear that he was in danger of having an accident. They expected a long time loyal customer to put everything down and run the child somewhere down the street to use a restroom somewhere else. There was absolutely no caring about the inconvenience or potential risk of him having an accident on the way.When I asked where the nearest bathroom was, they mentioned a couple of coffee shops several blocks away; it was obvious from their tone and body language that they did not care about the level of inconvenience. Even though I requested several times that they reconsider, they refused. I pointedly stated that I expected better behavior toward their customers and that I wouldn't be coming back; one of the staff smiled smugly and laughed. THIS IS HOW THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS. I've often overlooked the dreadful customer service at this location and the attitude of the staff. With the exception of the owner and one of the managers, the majority of the staff are rude and unhelpful. I've continued to go to Affordable whenever I have large projects that require the kind of selection in their store, because I'm loyal and willing to overlook some flaws. However, I expect loyalty to be returned. I expect that in an extenuating circumstance, it isn't unreasonable to hope that a store you've spent so much time and money supporting would help you out. I'm disappointed and saddened that the true colors of the staff and the establishment were revealed tonight. Poorly done. read more

I've been sewing since junior high. (41 years) This was a wonderful surprise when I was told about this store. It's the only store in the area that you can buy 15 yards of material on the same bolt. At Joanne's you can only special order 10 yards at a time. For curtains some times you need more and you want it from the same dye lot. The staff is very helpful and very pleasant. If you haven't been - treat yourself and check it out. Just like any store sometimes you find what you want and sometimes you don't. You're be crazy not to give it a try.
