Besides being on hold for over 40 minutes when trying to talk to a person, let me tell you about the tank removall fees. Being fed up with outragous pricing for their propane, I decided to buy my own tank and contacted Amerigas to pick up their tank. They charge $299.99 tank removal fee AND another $119.99 dispatch fee for a total of about $420 to pick up their tank I have been renting since 2018. By comparison, Blue Star charges $160, total Suburban charges $150, less credit for whatever fuel is still in the tank, total, and Ferrell charges nothing. I see absolutely no reason to ever do business with this company again, barring a change of ownership. read more

I manage a 4-unit rental property in Scotts Valley, and we've been using AmeriGas. The shared tank for all four units is medium-sized. AmeriGas consistently drove tenants away by issuing outrageously inflated bills. One former tenant received a $5,500 bill for May 2023--even though they weren't using the wall heater. Another tenant was billed $3,700 for November. To put that in perspective, a city inspector from Santa Cruz confirmed that $3,700 is way more than the annual gas cost for all four units combined, closer to the cost of two year gas usage by all 4 families. The only way to combat this scam is to get the city involved, forcing an AmeriGas employee to physically read the meter, or to spend endless hours on chat or phone calls with AmeriGas--both of which are exhausting and time-consuming. After inspection, the actual meter readings are nowhere near the thousands of dollars they claim remotely. But if you don't vigilantly monitor your bills, AmeriGas will hit you with $4,000-$5,000 per month, and they're lightning-fast to send those fraudulent bills to collections, wrecking people's credit. Bottom line: AmeriGas's remote meter readings, which inexplicably add a few zeros to your bill, are a complete SCAM. We're switching all tenants to FerrellGas this month and hoping they're not another scam like AmeriGas. If you want to destroy your credit, waste countless hours battling a dishonest gas company, or drive away good tenants, by all means--use AmeriGas. read more

For the 4th time, the good folks at AmeriGas have allowed my tank to run out of gas. Of course, it's a weekend, so there is no one available to pick up the phone. And before you ask, no way to leave a voicemail either. But it gets better...I log into my account and find that my account status has been change from "Automatic" to "will call". Yep, even though for 5 years it's been automatic, apparently, I've requested it be switched to will call. But it gets better, now, because the tank is empty and I've requested an emergency delivery, they want to charge me an emergency delivery fee, hazmat fee, testing fee, and more. The most recent experience with Amerigas continues the saga. 20 minutes on hold, to talk with someone on the other side of the world, who has no idea what propane service and delivery is. 24 days from order to delivery, and the new driver was very unhelpful. This is, without a doubt, the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. I had a gas leak, and my propane tank was red-tagged--a clear safety hazard. Despite this, the gas was left on. When I called, an employee finally came out to turn it off and casually mentioned they only have two technicians for the entire Bay Area. That alone is unacceptable. I felt sorry for the guy who has to listen to complaints all day. I've since spoken with at least 10 different customer service reps simply trying to schedule a repair. Some claimed a technician was on the way, so I canceled all my plans and waited--only to find out there was no record of the appointment. I STILL don't know if I have an upcoming appointment or not. One operator said it was canceled, another said it's still scheduled. No one seems to know. As of now, I've had no heat, no gas, and no hot water for weeks--and no idea when that will change. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was placed on hold for over 30 minutes before realizing I'd been put on infinite hold. The next operator was equally unhelpful. This company reportedly has over 5,000 complaints with the Better Business Bureau in the past 3 years and a class action lawsuit--and my experience makes it clear why. Website says the local office is open until 8PM; however, at 6pm PST "Sorry, our office is closed ". it actually doesn't matter: you will never talk or be able to communicate with a local employee, only the poor folks in some call center it is almost impossible to redeem a discount code; it is impossible to join a group for bulk discounts. One of the worst gas companies; they often miss auto service deliveries when they occur. When I called them, I smelled gas inside the house. They discovered that the odor was due to a problem with the tank's empty state. Now, they charge me almost $500 for a dispatch fee. After I complained about the unfair charge, they only reimbursed me a part of the charges. Do not trust them and leave them with auto pay. read more

Such terrible customer service - all outsourced to India - wish I could rate them at negative stars.. I was told that I had my account set up for regular delivery - it wasn't. When I ran out of gas they required that I pay an extra $300 for same day delivery - then they didn't deliver. I'm now on day 4 of cold water and no heat. Each day the outsourced customer service team tells me I am scheduled for delivery that day..."or maybe tomorrow" If you want the worst service you can imagine, with no one in your own country that you can talk to, I recommend Amerigas! read more

3 years ago at Thanksgiving AmeriGas failed to deliver my propane causing it to run out. I called and spoke to many people and eventually 2 days without propane got the delivery. Sad to say that today is the second time in 3 days that they fail to deliver citing a soft road - my road is asphalt! My mother is elderly and in pain. She owns a home in the hills and has been there for 35 years. Her permanent home is closer to me, 3 hours away. So a 6 hour round trip to go make sure things are ok in SV, empty trash, and other maintenance things that she needs to arrange to get done. She needed propane as the tank was 5%. She called and they said she had to be present. She said for what, to stand there doing nothing? They agreed to come out and fill and do a leak test without her there. Reminder, it is a 6 hour drive round trip. She went down Friday because we had rain and a cold snap. She likes to make sure everything is ok, and will arrange for services as needed. Sometimes trees or branches fall. No pilot. She asked a neighbor to come by, and he found the propane tank was OFF. They NEVER told her they would turn it off. She called, and they said call back Saturday, so she did.They said so sorry, Wednesday we can turn it on. She is old, in pain, and helpless to heat her home. Elderly people die when they get cold. I called and escalated this to be told she would be called back (today is Monday) and I have a feeling this is a brush off and they will show up Wednesday when they feel like it as punishment because she was not there to "sign off" when they filled the tank. The person I spoke with was empathetic at least. She would not have driven 3 hours to freeze had they told her they would turn the tank off. She would have to drive home 3 hours, then back Wednesday 3 hours for a tech to do what can't take more than 30 minutes. Nine hours of driving because she was lied to by omission just so she won't die. I am expecting them to reschedule for two weeks out at this rate. I will update if needed. Amerigas is HORRIFIC-DO NOT FALL PREY TO THESE VULTURES After leaving Amerigas due to higher than average prices and poor service, I needed them to pick up their tank. I couldn't use another propane supplier if they couldn't put their tank on the pad where the Amerigas tank still sits. I had to create a new pad, run new gas lines in order to start with Kamp's. I've called Amerigas to pick up their tank over 50 times over the years. Here we are, 3 1/2 years later, and the tank still sits on my original concrete pad. Now when I call customer service, which is a call center, not the Amerigas local office, I ask to be transferred to a supervisor, who also have also hung up on me or created a false promise with a pick up date.. then Amerigas doesn't show to the scheduled appointment. I am trying to do some septic work, that cannot be done with the tank in it's current location. I have escalated to Amerigas daily. Reports get filed, emails get sent, promises get made, apologies sound sincere.. and then nothing. I have no recourse and my septic problem cannot get fixed due to Amerigas ineptitude. They are too big to care about my small problems. How do I get this tank removed? It's empty but still heavy. I have no way to fix this problem and I am beside myself with frustration and anger. The delivery service is fine, no issues there. However, cancelling the service is an absolute nightmare. Their customer service is located outside the country so English is difficult for them and every response they say is a very long winded, scripted response that sometimes doesn't address the concern. The worst part is, they're untrained and unable to do simple tasks such as cancel the account. It took me 4 phone calls and over 3.5 hrs on the phone to cancel service, canceling service online through their web portal isn't an option. Each customer service representative had a difficult time canceling service, would put me on extensive hold, get confused and then ultimately think they cancelled it but I'd find out later that it wasn't canceled. Then I finally got in touch with a manager who also had a hard time canceling but did only if I paid an "early termination" fee and service fees of over $400. I had been a customer for 8 years, how can there be an early termination fee? When I tried to explain this to them, they just didn't seem to understand, perhaps the language barrier. In any case, avoid Amerigas at all costs. It will not end well for you and I hope to help other people from getting into similar long, difficult and costly situations such as myself. read more

I just had THE most bizarre experience... I just bought a new propane tank, so I called Valcon and asked what is the current price of propane. The guy asks, are you in Washington or Idaho? I say Idaho, and he says $1.85 per gallon, and I say thank you. (CALL VALCON!!)... Then I call Amerigas and ask the same question. The guy says, what is your name and phone number, and I say WHY? I just want to know the price of propane. He says he needs to "verify my identity first" and I say WHY? Are you going to sell it to my neighbor at a different price? I just want to know how much per gallon in northern Idaho. He refuses, says he needs to verify my identity first. WAIT, WHAT? I say, no wait, I am actually calling for my neighbor, and HE wants to know the price... Nope, gotta verify identity. So now, just out of curiosity, I verify my name and phone number. And then he says... Okay, and please verify your mailing address and email address... OHHH MY GOSH WOW!! REALLY??? Okay, so I do it, I tell him my address, etc. FINALLY, he says it is $3.85 per gallon!!!!! WOW!!!! AND THEN!!! AFTER THAT!!! I asked my secretary to call and pretend to be a new customer, and they quote her $1.63 per gallon!!!! I HATE YOU AMERIGAS, YOU THIEVES!!! read more

UPDATE: Lo and behold, Amerigas called me back after I posted this review. He told me that in the future, I will be able to make 4 payments and he doesn't know why the other representatives didn't work with me. He suggested that I stop payment on the E-check I gave them (which would cost me $20) and then my delivery would still be on schedule and then I call back and request the 4 payments. I said to him more than once, are you sure my delivery will still happen, even if I stop payment on the check and he said "yes" several times. I still felt uneasy, so I asked him one more time in the end and he finally said he could not guarantee the delivery would still happen if I did the stop-payment. At the beginning of the conversation, he told me that I needed to calm down, drink a glass of water, and have a seat. He said he was here to help me. When he could not guarantee the delivery if I stopped payment, I told him that he did not solve the issue and wasted my time for a half-hour. I have been a loyal customer of Amerigas since 2016. I have always been allowed to make payments on my tank fills. The driver shows up and fills the tank. I then call Amerigas within 30 days of the tank fill-up and arrange the four-month payment arrangement (four payments). I love this option because I am on a very tight budget, raising my grandchildren and I cannot afford to pay the whole invoice upfront, so the 4-payment option is a savior for me! Now, out of the blue, they want me to pay for my fill-up in advance before they will deliver it. I have never had to pay in advance. I called them up and they said it is because it is time for a secondary credit check. I explained that I have been a customer since 2016 and sure my credit score had changed since 2016, not for the better, but I have always paid my bills with Amerigas. So they put me on hold, while they checked my credit score. She returned on the line and said that I had a bad report and therefore I had to pay the invoice in full before they would deliver the propane that I desperately needed. I don't know what she means by bad report, I just was approved for an auto loan and a personal loan. I explained to her in tears that this wasn't fair that I have always paid them and that I don't have the $180.00 to pay upfront she said she felt SORRY for me and there was nothing further she could do to help me. What was a thorn in my side was when she thanked me for being a loyal valued customer. Are you kidding me? I told her to please stop saying that because if I am a loyal and valued customer, they have an awful way of showing it. So I ended up having to pay the $180.00 via an electronic check that my bank will pay and charge me an overdraft fee of $32 my account will now be overdrawn -$212.00. And now I can't pay my auto insurance on time. It's a snowball effect. My budget was all in order, knowing who I had to pay and when. NOW Amerigas wants to mess with my livelihood change my payment option and turn my tight budget upside down and now I am paying late bills that I have never been late on before. Do you understand my frustration? That $180 I had to pay, would be/should be going to four other bills I have to pay. Now those bills will be paid late all because of Amerigas a multi-million dollar company. This all just happened in the past hour and I am sick to my stomach, feeling panic and anxiety. read more

For some reason Amerigas decided to cancel my auto delivery and auto pay. They never informed me of the changes. Therefore I have been without propane for over 24 hours. They tell me that I'll get a delivery sometime tomorrow with a penalty delivery charge. We'll, isn't that helpful. They also informed me that I could go to my Amerigas.com and reset the settings that they changed. My Amerigas.com didn't recognize my sign in. After 3 hours (honestly) on the phone they convinced me they don't know what they're doing. And the language barrier ( I speak American English) doesn't help. My entire experience with Amerigas was a train wreck. Seems they must have deleted previous reviews for this San Jose Location. I started this process in late January and finally abandoned 6 weeks later when appointment was a no show and they refused to commit to posted discount prior to appointment. The total discount was not trivial and should have been $446.10 + $189 for 1yr tank rental. Zero email responses. EVER not one. Many hours on the phone with Customer Service including multiple hangups while being transferred. Despite providing credit information and agreeing to automated delivery, they refused to offer either free installation or year tank rental No show appointment on 3/8 - no call Promise on 3/8 to contact me that day for rescheduling. ZERO STARS. Amerigas was supposed to have our tank on rotation. My 86 year old mother's tank was not filled so it went empty. I put in an emergency request, which Amerigas says they have a 24 hour turnaround for emergencies. My request was on Friday, and they told me it would be here Saturday. It is now Wednesday, and my mom still has no gas, no hot water, and not heat. This is, no doubt, the worst company that I have ever dealt with. read more

My wife and I returned to the Bay Area after a two week trip to the East coast. We arrived home Saturday night 10/22/2022 to a cold house with two empty propane tanks, both at zero %. We are in the auto refill program and their algorithm said we still had 41%. No we had zero. The local office was closed. After some time searching I found an 800 number and called Sunday morning. They were very apologetic and assured me that we would have a delivery the same day Then I got a call Sunday afternoon to tell me they couldn't deliver that day. but I was ASSURED I would get my delivery first thing Monday morning. It's now 5:00 PM Monday and I've just been ASSURED I will get my delivery sometime tomorrow. NO HEAT, NO GAS STOVE FOR COOKING. This is the first review I've ever written on yelp, and if I could give zero stars I would. We've been a customer for years but that ends soon. Way too many times that they've let our tank run empty despite their so-called algorithm that is supposed to prevent that. Service appointments are impossible to schedule, the customer service reps can't seem to solve any problems, Their systems are always "down' or 'running slow today' making every phone call a test of patience, and no-show service appointments occur too frequently (and with absolutely zero follow up or apology). I can't stress enough how bad our experience has been - I don't expect a lot from a utility, but these guys don't even come close to meeting a minimum acceptable level of service. If you are in the market for home propane just do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. read more

This company is a complete mess. Got a notification that they could not deliver because the ground was too wet. I walked down in tennis shoes and the ground was damp, but certainly not muddy. I called to complain and got put on a phone tree where no one could actually get a hold of anyone else. The bottom line is the driver lied or there was no driver and that was some excuse. This is not the first time. I spoke to customer service and they mentioned that there is no prior complaints on my account. I've called to complain at least 15 times. Last week was only the second time I've had to call this company for a tank refill at my deceased mother's place. I'm pretty sure I talked to a real person with good Enlish skills without having to deal with a heavily accented 2nd language English speaker and a backwards ass phone tree which in the end didn't wotk when I entered 7 for what percentage of gas was in the tank and it transferred me to a person that wanted to verify my idenity. I gave them my parent's last name and mine and they said we don't have that. (In hindsight they didn't ask for spellings and hers has a less common vowel in it) I said I have the account number, her phone # etc. No, we have to verify your identity. WTF! I'm paying to have a gas tank filled. Is some imposter/fraudster going to fill it for me? I slammed the phone down and had my brother call them.
