I originally wrote this for the Gorda General Store which is where the Amerigo Gas Station is located at, but realized I actually "checkin" at Amerigo when I unexpectedly got service for a moment. In their song "Price of Gas," indie rockers Bloc Party sang, "I've been driving, a mid sized car, I never hurt anyone Is that a fact? The price of gas keeps on rising Nothing comes for free Make like a stone, make like a plant I can tell you, how this ends". I didn't feel good about paying $6.60 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline on 4/23/19, but after reading other reviews before me I don't feel nearly as bad. I can tell you how my Gorda experience ended too. It hurt. It was a big fat negative for the ol' bank account ($112 for almost 17 gallons), but it was better to be safe than sorry with a truck pulling a trailer on the glorious Highway 1. Amerigo Gas Station - Gas Stations Near Me - Gorda, California

Way overpriced gas, also truly evil they wont let you use their WiFi even if you offer to buy something or pay for 7 dollar gas, by the time you're that far north up the coast there is zero reception so if you're lost don't expect them to help. It was pitch black and pouring rain in January 2020. They also lied to me and said there wasn't any another gas station for 50 miles. Oh, you bastards!! With absolutely no signs posted anywhere advertising their prices, and no other gas station within 40 miles, this place has you by the goolies. And they know it. With gas having dropped back down to respectable levels - $2.39 in Marin - we pulled into this wee station for a needed fill-up. And discovered that they were charging $4.79 a gallon. Yes, it was full service - in that a surly guy sauntered over and asked us how much we wanted, grunted when I stammered "Err, ten dollars worth?" when I saw the price on the pump. But for TWICE what it costs everywhere else, you better have Jessica Alba locked in a box in that stall, providing "additional favors." NBC 11 broke the story of this little scam a few months back, but I didn't see it: "The reason the gas costs so much is because the town gets all its power from a generator and they use the extra profits from the pumps help pay that bill. "If you're out in the desert without water and you want a jug of water and they charge you 30 bucks for a jug of water, I wouldn't feel sorry for you. Seriously, when you consider the location, doesn't matter what the price of gas is (unless of course you're stranded and don't have enough money to buy 1-2 gallons, which should get you back to Cambria/San Simeon, cheaper than a tow for sure). I always stop here when driving by. Why? Because it's not only a beautiful spot, by stopping and purchasing something...yes, it will cost more, you get to help this location stay in business, and it is NEEDED. You've got to be joking. At $6 a gallon for regular - when the median price in California is $2.50, this may be a contender for the biggest rip off gas station on the planet. There is no justification other than greed. Rural Alaska has better prices. Other stations in Big Sur village are expensive, but much more reasonable at $4-ish. Lessons learned: fill up before you get anywhere near this area, and this gas station in particular. It's telling to note that pictures of the prices at the gas pump seem to be the most popular tourist photo taken at this stop. To give another idea of the comical pricing here, soda was $4 from the vending machine and coffee was $3.50 at the store. Also, was told the credit machine didn't work, and that you needed to pay in cash ... but when you state you don't have any, and start putting stuff back, all of a sudden it magically started working again! Highway 1 at Gorda is still impassable due to the landslide in May 2017. This gas station is essentially taking advantage of people that that don't realize where Gorda is, when the highway signs say "you can't get through at Gorda". They are charging an exorbitant price for gas because if you are on low on gas you have no other option. In addition, the little convenience store by the station is also charging exorbitant prices on their goods. read more

We stopped at this gas station mainly to use the restroom but also to get a little snack. We were greeted inside by a friendly guy named Jackson. The gas station didn't have much to choose from so he directed us to the little store which is just a few steps away. He was kind enough to ask about our trip and where we were headed. The little store just on the other side of the cafe had a good selection of sweet and savory snacks and the prices were reasonable. There was also a very nice man driving around on a John Deere maintenance cart who was very friendly and made sure we knew where we were going and found what we needed. Overall, this place was very warm and friendly. As I am writing this review, there are two other reviews that mention the price they are charging for gas. I don't think it's fair to bash this business for charging above the normal gas price. This is not a normal location. They are relying solely on tourism for their livelihood. It's basic supply and demand. Don't knock them for trying to make a living in this remote location not to mention this economy. There are so many things we overpay for everyday when we don't have to. Such as bottled water, movie theater snacks, as a matter of fact pretty much all consumer products. At least when you are paying a little more for this gasoline, you are supporting a local business owner instead of corporate advertising. If you are low on gas here and need to fill up, just enjoy the view and be thankful that you are lucky enough to be driving up beautiful highway one. read more

This was one of the worse nightmares of my life of travel, and I've traveled full time all over the United States. The people were NOT helpful and didn't seem to care one bit that their equipment didn't work. People couldn't use the credit card/debt feature on the gas pumps and they had no sign how to do it so it WOULD work if at all. Mine didn't work, they didn't take CASH only checks and a credit card of which I didn't have either. Their ATM machine didn't work at the general store, and they wouldn't give you cash back if you bought anything. Their cavalier and don't give a shit attitude was exasperating. I will never go back there, and will tell everyone possible to avoid this place. Then on top of it all, they charge 5.99 a gallon when gas at this time average is $3.75 a gallon. I couldn't move there was no other gas for 40 miles either way. Then they told me I had to move my vehicle before 9pm. Mind you, your cell phones don't work there. I couldn't call on my cell for any type help. They wouldn't let me make a phone call, so I had to call 911 to dispatch to someone to drive 2 hrs to bring me gas. They guy at the gas station left early and left a message he'd be back in 5 mins. I saw wave upon wave of ppl wait and wait and he never came back. People were so upset at the service it was a constant talked about thing as we were there. I ended up paying $20 (they took my debit for that, but NOT gas) to spend the night in the parking lot, no water, electric, and it was uneven besides. Terrible terrible place!!!! I even called AAA but they wouldn't bring me gas because I was at a gas station!! But they only took credit cards and checks I explained of which I have either. Even the police called and pleaded my case....unbelievable. I felt like I was in the twilight zone! Avoid this place at all cost. The coast is beautiful, but make sure you are totally full when you to anywhere near Big Sur and Gorda! The lady in the general store was like a drone, no feelings, no nothing. I just looked at her and have learned quite a bit from her because I NEVER want to have a job or anything that would make me heartless when it came to human suffering. She didn't offer a nice word nothing. WOW was all I could say. Hope these people take some classes on customer service because they are so lacking!! One sweet waitress from the Whalers Café came and gave me a smile after seeing me go through this for hours and said that if nothing else SHE would give me enough money for gas to get down the road! I didn't get her name and for that I'm so sorry. The thing is, I HAD MONEY ON MY DEBIT CARD!! I had plenty of money on two cards, but their machines didn't take it. Okay so when i got gas here I never actually took notice of how much it cost considering it was the only sign of civilization I had seen since the resorts in big sur. i just assumed it was the regular 2.50 or whatever, until i googled the place up and found out it is apparently the most expensive gas in the US. I don't feel scammed, in fact, i feel a bit accomplished. i mean who else can say they have had the most expensive gas in the US pumped into their car? Probably not many people. Though I was wondering why 20 bucks didn't fill up my tank. Oh well. Anyway, I give this place four stars because the gas station attendant was super friendly and even showed me a photo of his hilltop house thus making me jealous and contemplating dropping everything and moving to Gorda (where I would hike every day and watch the ocean and host potlucks for my friends who would drive in from the city to see me) for the 5 remaining hours on the road home. This town (and big sur in general) is perfect...now if only they had cell phone reception! read more

Has anyone realized the terrain in this area? Theres NOTHING for miles in gorda. Its picturesque and quiet. You get stuck here that's your fault. Their gas is more expensive because it probably takes the tankers forever to get out there. If you expect Carmel, go to Carmel, snobs. These people are nice and if you bring a bad attitude they can smell it. Get over yourselves. Give them a little business and you might get to listen to some fun stories. read more

For all of you that want to just drive along the coast and check out the scenery. Have fun and make sure that you fill your TANK with gas before you leave the Monterery Bay Area. My sister and I had to buy gas in Gorda because we were very low by the time we got that far. WE HAD TO PAY $6.54 per gallon for gas. THIS IS PRICE GOUGING PEOPLE AND I THINK IS "VERY ILLEGAL" OR SHOULD BE IF IT ISN"T !!! So remember people-don't get gas or Patronize these people AT ALL !!! Maybe they will get the message!!!
