I took my friend on a day trip to a concert in Buffalo and swung through Rochester on the way. We stopped at her favorite sub shop, Amiel's. She sugested that I try a roast beef sub with lots of hot peppers and LOTS of the oil "dressing", "can't find anything like it anywhere!" Boy, it was GOOD. Both my coworker and I searched our office for condiments to try and give this thing some actual flavor. There was a very tiny smidge of cheese sauce on it - if there had been a generous amount, this might have became a slammin' sammie. I absolutely LOVE this place. They have the best subs I have had. I was in the area visiting friends and they mentioned this place. They went on and on about the bread and how they butter it through a machine. So we stopped in and gave it a try. This place has been around for YEARS The atmosphere is that of an old school diner. Large tattered bench seats, tables and block glass adorns the decor. Bright colors and a quick friendly vibe The lines are long as ever during lunch time. There are people coming in and waiting patiently.. The menu is pretty straight forward there are select named subs or build your own. I can't believe I hadn't written a review for them yet! They have my favorite subs!!! Their bread is awesome! It's squishy and soft and never burned or hard. And if you get there early enough (early lunch time) they usually have day old bread loaves that you can get for a $1! They also will toast your sub if you want it that way. I never get it toasted because I love the bread just how it is. I'm a vegetarian, so I get the veggie or the cheese sub. They also have a warm cheddar sauce that I always add to my sub. Yum! I do love this place whenever I make it out to Rochester. At some point during the drive, I crave a sub from here. The new COVID-19 measures need some work. Ordering online was simple enough. Even when plugging in "ASAP" the wait for a couple of subs was about 45 minutes, but knowing they can be busy and it was a Saturday, I accepted it would take some time. They give you an option of curbside pickup with your order number and you describe your vehicle. We got there, parking lot and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. Another car pulled up beside us, and they must have also been waiting for their order. The funny thing is no one was even coming out of the side door where they do curbside orders. We waited and waited and waited again. There were a lot of employees inside and a bit too many people in line putting in orders, which is why curbside is ideal in the first place. The person next to us nearly sideswiped us pulling up to the door the second they saw an employee near it. The employee comes up to their window with an order, they exchange words, but it wasn't their order. It was ours. But instead of bringing it to us, he took it back inside, got their order instead, and then never came back out. Only after calling did another employee bring out the order, by then, we had waited another 45 minutes on top of however long it took to fill the order, and our order wasn't completely right, one of the sizes was wrong, and the hot sub was cold and oily. Unfortunately this place keeps getting sued by patrons that slip on their way in and out of the restaurant, or the bathrooms. It's obvious that these lawsuit-happy locals are not really hurt. They are simply making "Amiel" out of minor injuries. So sad. What to get: Roast Beef on a sub with everything, toasted buttered, including peppers, dressing, etc. What else: Dan Akroyd's worn underwear. If it were called Apiel's then it would lobby for Death Row inmates to be "let off" and it would help them "get off" in all kinds of ways. Amiel's is on the "Must Eat At" list when I visit western NY. Every time we even pass through Rochester I need to stop here for my all time favorite sub. I always get the club which has a combination of ham, turkey and roast beef. Their rolls are made in house and are always fresh. You MUST get the butter and toasted option, trust me on this. You have your options of toppings but there's not so many that it overwhelms you. The lettuce is shredded and the onions are sliced thin which I think adds to the sub. The roast beef is freshly sliced right there in front of you and should be a go to if you're not sure what you want. At the end if they ask you if you want salt and pepper, you're answer should be "YES". The difference between a good sub and a great one is seasoning. Tough call! I really like their bread especially since it was buttered and toasted. They have this cool toaster that is outfitted with a roll that butters up the bread before it is placed into the toaster. Nice! The quality was fine, their service was very good, their prices are reasonable. What's tough for me is to compare Amiel's with Dibella's and Pelligrino's. I have been going to Dibella's for years - since it was one small shop. And even though something's changed as they grew into a chain, I still like Dibella's. I like the variety of food at Pelligrino's. They are very innovative. So, while Amiel's is not bad, I still prefer the other two better. That's probably more of a personal preference. It's been a while since I visited Amiels; I'm glad I checked them out again. Meals in the past there had been fair to middling, and so it has not been on my short list of places to visit. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped in for a convenient meal. I noticed a few changes to the better. Like Subway & DiBella's, Amiels bakes their rolls on site now. I have been coming to this location for more than 20 years. It's my favorite sub shop in the area. The bread is fresh and I like that it's softer than most of the other shops around. Eye of the round roast beef is cooked in-house daily. I love that they butter and toast the rolls for hot subs or any sub upon request. I usually go for a Chic-A-miel which is fresh cooked chicken cut up and on top of a toasted roll. I do melted cheddar on it which is the bomb! I couldn't decide on 3 or 4 stars because this place is not looking so hot on the inside. When I went in, it was messy in there. It needs some renovations. Our family really loves Amiels subs and I remember going to this sub shop located in Henrietta as a little boy in 1969!! My wife and I went to the Amiels sub shop in Henrietta about 8 months ago and had a poor experience. During that visit our sub was all lettuce with almost no tuna. I had called and spoken to the manager at the time (I think his name was Mike) to provide feedback. We were not interested in a discount or free sub, and asked that the next time we visited that our sub sandwich would be made correctly. He joked that we would not have called if there was too much tuna on our sub, which we felt was an unneeded sarcastic comment. Fast forward 8 months and my wife and I stopped into the Henrietta Amiels today on Saturday October 15 around 12:30pm and ordered a jumbo Tuna sub, side of potato salad and chips to split. Once again, we received a sandwich that was 80% lettuce as per the pic I attached. I'm not certain the employees care much about quality, satisfying customers and we sensed there was no management inspecting and supporting the employees. Very disappointing and not what we've experienced from Amiels years ago. Also, the side order of potato salad was undercooked and tasted like it had perfume in it. There are so many options available for sub sandwiches and we hope Amiels Henrietta fixes these issue asap! We only ate about 20% of our jumbo sub, decided not to call the store manager to complain and instead went down the street for lunch. I love the tuna because they use a lot of mayo so it's not dry and they don't ate onion or celery. My husband and daughter first timers. They loved it too. Downside. The restaurant needs some updates and the dining area was a little dirty. A glass block fell off the wall near the deli line and came so close to landing on my daughters foot. I find it very hard not to stop at Amiel's for REAL roast beef. I've had their original Beef-A-Miel, which is simply beef on a roll, but of amazing quality. The sub is a little more diverse in that it begs for condiments such as lettuce, tomato, onion. In both cases, the buttered & toasted roll and the salt and pepper seasoning add a lot. Now for some history. I believe I first had a similar sandwich at Mike's subs in Schenectady in the late 60s. It was called a Neba and tasted just as good. I don't know if the two chains were related, but the Neba was reincarnated by the Mr. Subb chain. Amiels has perfected it for the Rochester area. I think there is some family connection! Oh, yes, there are many other subs at Amiel's, but the beef is the best. Counter staff is well-organized in that the person you order from has full responsibility to make your order (not a production line like Subway). A Review of Each Distinct Amiel's Sub Disclaimer: The topping recommendations are mostly conjecture. I have not tried every sandwich multiple times with different toppings for comparison. Many single meat sandwiches omitted from the review due to redundancy, as well as Seafood, Cheese, and Veggie. Sandwiches are rated on an AMIEL'S NORMALIZED 5-star scale. The Amiel's 1-star is still a good sandwich--it's just the worst one here. Original Assorted Amiel's deli sandwiches are good. That's almost all that needs to be said about the Original Assorted. However, the lack of real roast beef makes me reluctant to order this one. I recommend Swiss-American, veggies, mayonnaise, mustard and salt/pepper for the classic taste. Italian Assorted Spicier and more interesting than the Original, the Italian Assorted makes a name for itself by packing a great deal of flavor just in the meat itself. It can be a little overwhelming when combined with the flavor-dense addons at Amiel's, but for some, that can be a real treat. I recommend provolone, Italian dressing, lettuce and onion, and sweet peppers on the Italian Assorted. Amiel's Club The Amiel's Club is the first menu item with their roast beef, which is worth mention by itself. The Club is a variation with 3 meats--ham and turkey in addition to the beef, and it's what the Original wanted to be. A top-tier mixed deli sandwich overall. Can't go wrong with the Club. I recommend getting whatever toppings you feel like on this versatile sub. Bernie's Favorite Whoever Bernie is, he's got good taste. The Favorite is very similar to the Club, and the two are equally good and more or less interchangeable. Comments from the Club apply here. Real Roast Beef Amiel's is famous for their excellent roast beef, so why bother with any lesser meat? That is the philosophy behind the Roast Beef sub, and it is hard to deny. There's not much to say about this simple sandwich. You won't regret it. I recommend going light on the toppings to let the beefy flavor dominate the palate. Meatball The meatball sub makes for the first non-deli on the menu. It is a very different food item from the subs above, and in my eyes, it fails to match them in excellence. Since the selection of reasonable and cohesive add-ons is very limited, you miss out on a lot of good stuff with this sub. The problem truly lies in that Amiel's is based around the deli sub, and the meatball suffers as a result. It may be worth a try, since this reviewer is not a fan of meatball subs at all, ergo this review might be unfair. Recommended topping: Cheese, I guess? Not much else makes sense. Gyro Highlighted oddly on the menu, this sandwich seems a very strange inclusion, especially given the presence of real gyros at Kebab House next door. You look at it and think, "Why would anyone order this?" and yet, this dark horse is one of the best items on the menu. The preparation process is quite different and a little lengthier than a typical sub, so there is a risk of confusing your sandwich artist or irking customers behind you. However, those mild inconveniences are made up for nearly by the smell of the toasting gyro meat alone. I couldn't call this my favorite sandwich, but it's fun, different, and completely worth trying. I recommend tzatziki sauce, veggies, and anything else you like on a regular sub. The toasted meat doesn't do that well in the fridge, and this sub is difficult to reheat. Leftovers are good, but not as good as other sandwiches. Note also that you could potentially get the tzatziki on a regular sandwich if you asked. but +1 for uniqueness Chicken Salad No sandwich at Amiel's is ever bad, but you could probably do better than the Chicken Salad. It could have been a fluke, but the chicken salad I was served the one time I got it was far too dry, and the flavor wasn't that exciting either. Not recommended. Original Tuna In juxtaposition to the other salad sandwich, the tuna salad is one of the best items on the menu. It's well blended and flavored, and pairs well with the excellent add-ons that Amiel's provides. Veggies, peppers, and even the Italian dressing if you're feeling zesty can really add to the excellence of Amiel's tuna. It can be a little messy (especially on Day 2), but this is a sandwich worth ordering. Hot Ham The ham on this sandwich is spicy, not warm. It's not bad, but it is an underwhelming choice compared to a mixed deli sub or one with roast beef. Plays well with any toppings. read more
