After being pissed off by the horrible service of Mark's Texas hots for the last time, I gave this place a chance and am SO GLAD I DID. I'm a big fan of their Alexander Plate with the cheeseburgers and chicken fingers, fresh toasted bread and delicious slightly spicy meat sauce. The price can be a little higher than other spots but the taste and abundance of food is perfect. The staff behind the counter are pretty laid back and are willing to work with my accommodations and have proven to quickly fix any mistakes. Thanks for catering to my late night munchies! read more

The bread is the star of the sub show at South Wedge Hots. Crispy outside with a fluffy and tasty center. My buffalo chicken tender sub was beautifully toasted. Like many of you reading this, I am a loyal Wegmans chicken tender sub aficionado but I had to give this a try - and I'm glad I did! The "large" is maybe an inch shorter than what you'll get for a Wegs large, but the flavor is comparable if not better (also it's a buck cheaper). You see, the tenders on a Wegs sub have a tendency to slip themselves out of their cocoon of dough forcing the diner to use his/her fingers to sloppily shovel the meat into his/her orifice - can be messy friends. The fried and sauced cock strips at SWHots however are thinner and flatter, allowing them to sit snugly as you unhinge your jaw to consume their tender flesh. Divine. I'll be back for the plate. As much as i want to love this place for its late night appeal, I just can't recommend. Still it's a family business (husband and wife man the grill and register), and they deserve a shot from time to time-- like late at night, when you're fairly wasted. The cheeseburger is not at all bad, but most of the food is frozen like a brick when they prepare it. They dump it right on the grill or in the fryer. And it's just discouraging to watch them cook it. I've had mozzarella sticks that were barely warm when I got home with them. if the food were passably good (cheeseburger aside), I'd recommend this place just for the weird black-walled ambiance and grouchy counter service. because they're a Mom and Pop shop, I keep trying. you should too. I stopped by South Wedge Sub and Hots with my friend on our way to an outdoor movie. She promised me that they had great subs - but I told her I wasn't that hungry and didn't end up ordering anything. Smart girl that my friend is, she decided to order a large Chicken Finger Sub thinking that I'd get hungry later. Thank God that she did. I actually ended up getting into the sub before she did, and what greeted me was Submarine Sandwich Bliss. So good! Normally I'm a Dibella's/Wegman's Sub kind of girl - this sub rivaled them. I dare say, I might even prefer it! For starters, their sub is Billy Fuccillo style HUGE. The thing must have weighed a few pounds. The toppings, chicken and roll all fused to make a delicious sandwich. The roll itself was amazing. Nice and soft on the inside, with a chewy crusty outside. Perfect! I've been coming to this place for a couple of years now and I'm never dissapointed. I usually call in and pick up my food and they always have my food done within 10-15 minutes. They are the only place in Rochester that I've found to do a decent Chicken Finger sub that rivals places like Jim's Steak Out in Buffalo. For some reason I find a lot of Rochester places will not mix the chicken fingers IN the sauce and then bake them. Most of them just give you sauce on the side. South Wedge does it right! I have not had their Plate yet, but I would imagine that it's pretty fantastic, as everything else I've had from them has been great. They also have massive serving sizes. A "small" batch of fries is an extra large any place else, and a large is enough to feed four people. Recently, the city has told them that they can't stay open past 2am due to "too much foot traffic blocking the sidewalk". They have a petition you can sign to have them be approved to stay open later. I encourage you to sign it, as they are places like Mark's across the street and street vendors and McDonald's right down the road that are all open past 2am. I'd like to see these guys get the extra money and be able to serve their amazing food to the masses. read more

That was enough for me to try it out.... next time I will check my YELP app before I just dive in. They asked what I would like on the sub and in true "me" style I went with non-traditional toppings. LoL, just had to be a little off center. The sub was actually kind of good. But have you ever had a taste for something and when you got it, there was just he slightest thing that didn't seem right? Halfway through the sub it hit me, the bread!! It was just slightly underdone...is that even possible? You toasted the bread then made the sub but it was still a little gummy for lack of a better word. So I took it home popped it in the oven, yeah we still use those, and it was great. I came in for a quick bite and was surprised at how delicious it was. I ordered a hot buffalo chicken sub expecting it to be smaller than it was. I couldn't even finish it. Not only that, but it wasn't too greasy and was very well marinated. Even the lettuce, tomatoes and onions on it were fresh and delicious. You've got to hand it to the name of this place and Yelp, together they will confuse anyone who's attempting to find it by neighborhood. Anyhow, I've given Hots and Subs three chances with three different orders and have found the food to be Meh each time. I'll try the Cheese Steak next time and if that doesn't knock my socks off, that'll be it for me.
