Order the three beef tacos; two chicken tacos; one chicken fajita; nacho salsa; and fried ice cream minus the fudge extra caramel drizzle . This was a carryout order. Arrived home only to find out that there was no salsa and chips, and the fried ice cream was drenched in fudge in which case I had requested no fudge due to an allergic reaction through. Now just this location and granddaughter opened a take out only place on Fort in Southgate. Totally Wowed the special on Thursday Mexican Pizza only $7.99 will feed 2 hungry folks. I visited from Dallas all the way here and certainly was not disappointed. We arrived 10mins before closing and we were welcomed with very open arms. We were sat in a booth, never felt rushed. To say the food was "increible" (with my spanish accent) was an understatement. I certainly will be back on my next visit to Grosse Ile. read more

Been eating here for over 30 years! It is my favorite local Mexican Food Restaurant. I have not found anywhere else that has the same type of delicious smooth salsa and often will stop just to get chips & salsa takeout. My favorite meal is the bean, beef and cheese burritos but the shredded chicken ones are equally amazing. The Mexican pizzas are huge, crispy and delicious as well. This will not take the place of my Los Galenes in Detroit, but it will definitely take the prize for downriver. A few standouts: They participate in the Riverview Schools Discount card restaurant program (thumbs up to that!). -Their Salsa: You will either love or hate. I happen to love. It's NOT chunky, rather, pureed. You may think it looks like tomato sauce; I in fact think it looks like tomato sauce, but don't worry, that's OK! It's amazing! I'm addicted to the stuff! My husband can't have hot, so I get the mild. Super good! I've never had a problem with their chips, as mentioned in other reviews. They are always warm, and always fresh. -Their Web Burrito: My husbands fav. This thing is MASSIVE! -Their soft tacos: I don't know what makes them so good, but they are by far my favorite. I order them every time. Give this place try! My suggestion would be for them to invest a bit more on the interior (or exterior) to bring this place back to life aesthetically. This is my go to Mexican restaurant I just can't give it five stars because sometimes the food isn't consistent. 90% of the time is great! The food comes out hot and normally really quick, but sometimes it just doesn't take great, it can be bland. Also the restaurant needs to be updated. The tables are being held up by spindles that sometimes fall for no reason and the bench seats are low and not the most comfortable. That all being said I will totally go back there to eat and recommend you go there also. read more

Two times in a row I have ordered a take-out botana with refried beans; no beef, no chicken. Each time I got the order home it had ground beef and a 1/4" pool of grease at the bottom of the plastic container. The grease ruins the other toppings. I don't know why the persons taking orders cannot put in large print on the ticket "BEANS ONLY. NO MEAT." Maybe they are and the cooks aren't reading the tickets. Don't know the root cause, but I do know this is not customer focused service. Management needs to fix this situation to prevent these mistakes. Don't be fooled by the exterior of this restaurant. After sitting for 10 minutes without service at the fancy new mexican place down the street, we pulled up stakes and hit Amigos...it was an excellent decision. We received excellent and prompt service upon being seated in the clean and comfortable dining room. The chips and salsa are good and the bean dip with chorizo is flavorful. We also ordered the chicken enchiladas and chicken quesadilla. Both dinners were delicious and came with homemade rice and beans. We've been looking for a new Mexican Food place. We have a winner!! We went today, Sunday afternoon. Right from the start it was a great experience. Friendy greeting and seated right away. I love Amigos and we eat it all the time. So let me explain why I'm giving it 3 stars. 1. They used to make their own chips and salsa. It was magical. Now, they don't. It's still good. Their chips and salsa still get devoured by my family, but it's just not the same. 2. When I ate there with my sister in law the other night, she asked for a side of sour cream. They brought out a packet of sour cream and for some reason that just seemed ew to us, especially at a place that has sour cream on so many menu items. 3. Anytime we get carry out, we have to thoroughly check it before leaving the parking lot. They have about a 50% rate of getting our full order correct. Which means that they get get it wrong about half the time. 4. While the quality of the food has gone down a bit over the years in general (including the chips, salsa, sour cream), their prices have not. So while the food gets less amazing, the price gets more expensive. The pros: it's close to home, wait staff is usually pretty good, and the food is delicious (just not as delicious as it used to be). I almost always get the same thing, but have ventured out to try new things a few times, and am usually pleased. They recently switched from Pepsi to Coke, which I prefer. Overall, it's really good, but not amazing. UPDATE 1/2020: We dined in at Amigos tonight. Hubs and I agreed that we are in desperate need of a new Mexican place. It was gross inside, the waitstaff was slow, and it was GROSS. Food all over, greasy floors, a silverware graveyard under the tables. Well what could I say about chips from a bag, definitely not fresh and made in house, the salsa was basically taco sauce from a jar lol I ordered the wet burrito and it was edible, but not very good, decent amount of food for the price is about all I can say about it. There's authenticity. Then there's the attempt at authenticity. Then there's you trying to be original and succeeding. Then there's you trying to original and failing only to become a copycat of the next guy you see on Food Network. Amigo's falls into the second category of trying to be a good Mexican and my Downriver experience with food has been less than stellar. Perhaps I need a new geography because it's that bad and not very convincing in the realm of change for something better. I came here on a whim and from the pictures of a friend who recommended this place and since I live near here, and I definitely was feeling Mexican since she showed me pictures of her dinner, I knew I had to come. So I get there. Amigo's is tucked away at a dilapidated plaza just about to be encroached by the nearby vegetation. It looks like it came from the set of The Walking Dead with it's beaten up parking lot, and nature about to take over the plaza. And Amigo's is stuck right on the last section of the two building plaza. So I walk in. The place was small but quaint. Homey and cozy which wasn't bad at all. That's where it ends... I get seated and my server comes by with chips and salsa. Now if you have any knowledge or any experience with a tex-Mex joint, you'll know that the chips and salsa act as the pre-cursor to your Tex-Mex dining experience. Chips and Salsa is the beginning deal that will make or break your burrito or tacos. It's the little thing that will wet the palette and kick start the metabolism to be able to digest your order of carnitas whatever. 1. The chips didn't look homemade or at least original. Fried up to almost, factory-like perfection. There was a definite crunch that made me think of Chi-Chi's bag of tortilla chips. 2. The Salsas... were not salsas. They were red and creamy. But that was it. What salsa do you know that looks like creamed up tomato purre? The spicy version. Didn't even tingle the tongue! And what kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't pack the Tapatio and Cholula bottles on the table???!!! I didn't see that in there so I was left with bland tomato puree made to look like "salsa" and was given no means to doctor it up enough to give it some real spicy kick. But I was hungry and it was filling but, this was a total disappointment. Strike 1... My server. Sweet lady. Can't hear worth nothing. Sure they were probably closing. Yea, she's probably got silverware to roll, dishes to rack, and tables to wipe as well as sections to sweep and vaccum but you close at 9 and there are still people there and I get there at 8:25pm so we're good, you're not in a rush. Can't hear worth nothing. "Water no lemon please..." "Right, so got your order. And a water with lemon coming up." "No, sorry, no lemon." Strike 2... Again, my server. Sweet lady. Can't hear worth nothing. Takes my order. Based on what my friend showed me, I'll follow suit and get a wet burrito. I knew what I wanted and ordered right away. On top of the tiny debacle replayed above, I asked for chicken in the burrito. Server writes down my order. So I sit and wait. A few minutes later, my order arrives. Huge. Long. Not very thick or hearty looking considering Chipotle burritos are dense and packed with variety. The Amigo Wet Burrito is nothing short of a flaccid disappointment. What comes out is a poor excuse for a burrito. The thing looked more like a enchilada than an actual burrito. Burritos are supposed to be cylindrical, packed tight with ingredients and flavored with Mexican seasonings and spice, bursting with ingredients the moment you cut into it. The wet sauce is this watered down tomato based concoction that was poured over the flat enchilada and the thing was sitting in a pool of... something. And upon cutting into it... ground beef. I swear I told the lady chicken. I saw her write down chicken. What comes back in my enchilada, is beef. Low grade, extremely salty, ground beef. I don't know what she communicated to the kitchen but clearly it wasn't, "Wet burrito with chicken". Strike 3... That was the brunt of my experience with that place. The burrito was heavy, greasy, poorly constructed food, poorly seasoned, poorly set in presentation, and just an overall disappointment of a Mexican place. Another chance for Downriver redemption... gone. The only redeeming factor here is the staff... minus the sweet server lady who can't hear worth nothing. Needless to say... You can try it... but don't say I didn't warn you. Perhaps it was an off day... but aren't first impressions the thing that make or break your experience moving forward? I have been going to Amigo's since I was a young child, and I'm almost 30! (Yes, it's been around that long). My favorite thing about Amigos, and what keeps bringing me back, is simply their salsa! I don't know how they make it, but it sure is tasty! Their food is okay, nothing out of this world, but not terrible either. If you like Mexican food, you will like this place. Much of their food is very similar, just served in a different way. Their prices are pretty affordable too, with most meals being under $10. As other reviewers have said, their food is VERY Americanized, so if you're looking for real AUTHENTIC Mexican food, drive on down to Mexicantown in Detroit and take your pick from several restaurants! read more

All of my friends and extended family seem to LOVE this place. Amigo's has great, friendly service and their food isn't prepared poorly, or anything, its just not good (or authentic). In case you've never been here, Amigo's serves what I call American-idealized Mexican-style food: 1. most dishes covered in red sauce and shredded cheese 2. canned refried beans as a side to every dish 3. warm (bagged) torilla chips and fresh salsa C'mon, I've had better stuff in a shopping mall/airport food court/amusement park.
