Let me start off by saying that I am very very out of the demographic for this Japanese hair salon. I am a white, blonde woman. Who had gotten absolutely fed up with the hairdresser I had loved and been faithful to for more than 12 years in Burbank. Although she did great work, she overcharged for everything and was supremely late for every appointment. And I'm not talking 5 to 10 minutes late. I'm talking 35 to 40 minutes late. So after suffering for all this time, I finally decided to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. Amity Hair salon happens to be just a couple of blocks away from where my son and his partner live on Sawtelle. They had both recently gotten really great haircuts there so I decided to try it. And man, am I ever glad I did. As many of the positive reviews here say, Hidemi is pretty much the best stylist and colorist ever. I was really nervous walking in as a white blonde woman because I don't think this Japanese hair salon handles many of those. But my first experience and my second have convinced me that , this is my new go-to hair salon. The first time I walked in, I noticed the sense of peace, relaxation and minimalist decor that this hair studio, tucked away in the corner of a shopping mall, offered. But it wasn't until I had my haircut and then washed and styled by Hidemi that I fully understood what a Japanese hair salon is all about. Hidemi is honestly one of the kindest, loveliest, most caring, and professional people I have ever come across. I think my son and his Chinese American girlfriend for referring me to this wonderful place. Both of them have gotten their hair cut here before, so I knew that Hidemi could handle both white blonde American hair as well as coarse Asian hair. Hidemi is sweet, kind and accommodating as well as an absolute master of her craft!! I felt almost kind of guilty coming into a Japanese hair salon, where I did not speak Japanese. But Hidemi made the process so smooth and lovely. The first time I went for a cut, the second and third times I went to get color because I trust her that much. She has done a beautiful job and I am very satisfied. And P.S. The shampoos and scalp massages Hidemi gives are absolutely beyond compare!! I defy you to find anyone better. read more

So happy to have found my new go-to hair stylist in the area! Hidemi is amazing--she has excellent communication, a gentle touch, and a great eye for detail. She takes the time to fully understand what you want before starting, and she works efficiently without compromising on quality. Plus, her head massage during the hair wash is a bonus! She's incredibly kind and talented, and the prices are reasonable for the level of work she delivers. I wish I had taken "before" pictures, but my hair originally had brassy, bleached highlights with very grown-out natural black roots. I asked Hidemi to even everything out into a darker, neutral/ashy brown so it wouldn't look so segmented. The result was perfect--natural-looking, ashy without being too cool, and not too warm either. She also trimmed a few inches, and it's genuinely the best haircut I've ever had. You can't really tell in the photos since it's curled, but she gave me the perfect U-shape cut that I requested. My hair usually feels very dry and dull after coloring, but this time, it looked so shiny and healthy. I couldn't be happier with the result! read more

The second I walked in, I was warmly greeted. My hair stylist, Yayoi, really took the time to know my hair and hair type before beginning. The consultation was in very in depth and Yayoi made sure she understood what kind of cut I was asking for. I asked for long layers, face framing, and a v cut from the back. I came here because my boyfriend recommended this place after getting his hair done by Kazuma, and I LOVED how his hair turned out. I originally wanted to book with him, but I don't think he was available, so Kenji did my hair instead. I was honestly nervous at first because I have extremely long hair, but WOW my experience was amazing. Kenji paid so much attention to detail and was incredibly gentle throughout the entire appointment. He listened carefully while I explained the vision I had for my hair and executed it perfectly. The haircut, wash, and blow dry were all amazing. The way they wash your hair here feels SO good!!! they really massage and scrub your scalp gently and even use a hot steam towel. It was genuinely one of the best salon experiences!!! I also appreciated how kind and professional Kenji was. He noticed some dryness/breakage in my hair and kindly recommended using hair oil, which I thought was really thoughtful. I also liked that he didn't force conversation the whole time because I wasn't really in a talking mood (I was really tired and I'm an awkward person), and he still made me feel comfortable and cared for. Throughout the entire process, it was very comfortable and great! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I'll definitely be coming back. I really do not like to leave bad reviews, but I hate looking at myself in the mirror after my haircut. I was looking for a new hair stylist after moving and saw raving reviews for Hidemi. I came in for a haircut and showed her two pictures, and told her I wanted a lot of layers and layers that were long, gentle and had a long distance of gradation (running at least several inches apart from top to bottom). The end result was nothing like I had showed her; the layers were choppy, stubby, my hair not nearly thinned out on the bottom and remaining too voluminous, and too few layers, and layers too close together (starting and ending within less than an inch of each other total). Basically my hair looks like a triangle which is very unflattering. I should have known because I'm pretty sure she did not look at the pictures I showed her at all. Near the end when I had asked for her to thin my hair at the bottom more she was rushing to get me out because her next client was waiting. Paid $85 or so dollars plus like 20% tip (I always tip out of principle despite the service because it's a hard job) totaling a bit over $100. Now I have to go spend another $100 for someone else to fix my hair. Would not recommend for young girls with a lot of hair. read more

I cannot say enough great things about this salon. It has been years since I have had a regular hairdresser. I've tried other places and they are just so expensive and so underwhelming. My sister and I have now been coming here to see Masami for about a year now. She is amazing. The first time I took her multiple pictures and showed her what I liked and didn't like about each and she gave me a haircut that I absolutely love. The employee on the phone was really kind and helpful and once I arrived at the salon the employee was also kind at the front desk. The interior was super clean and gave a relaxing vibe.
