Maybe my expectations were set too high from all of the hype, but I didn't find this to be the mind blowing experience I was expecting. Hats off to the servers though; they were quite good and patient working with me at ~9:30PM when tumbleweeds were blowin through. My ratings: Oatmeal Lace - 8/10, Ooey Gooey Buttercake - 7/10, Pistachio whatever - 7/10, Salted Caramel Crack whatever - 5/10. Generally I wanted the ice cream to be sweeter and even creamier (if you can believe it). I think I Moose Tracks due to their fudge swirl, which is 1/3 the price. As a resident of the San Francisco Bay area, I come from the land of self-titled ice cream "connoisseurs" who are generally weary of the ice cream other cities have to offer. And frankly, we're pretty spoiled out here as far as ice cream goes (Bi-Rite, Mr & Mrs Miscellaneous, Humphrey Slocombe, etc). The ice cream at Ample Hills initially comes across as a well-edited mix of simple flavors + toppings picked for you by the man behind the curtain. The more I ate though, the more impressed I became. The ice cream was the right amount of creaminess and was also a pretty cold temperature (the best. If i want melty ice cream I'll take my cone outside on a hot summer day). The ingredients mixed in, such as the salted crack cookie, are superb. As I tried more flavors, they began to remind me of things I loved as a child.. pb&j, peppermint patties, gummy bears... as well as flavors I grew to love as an adult, such as salted caramel and honeycomb. When I finished the ice cream, I began to wonder if the man behind the curtain was much more of a mastermind than I initially thought -- tweaking knobs and proportions until he achieves the perfect flavor combinations that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. I look forward to coming here when I'm back in New York, as my "non-SF" ice cream skepticism has been thoroughly put to rest. I have been a fan since they were just a cart. And now that they have a full blown location, how could I not love them? Here's my breakdown: The store itself: it's wonderfully decorated. I love the old-styled furnishing makes it feel like it's been there forever. The staff: always kind, friendly, knowledgable and fun. And of course: the ice cream: WHAT? Amazing! Not only is it all from local farms, it's churned right there on the premises and it's AMAZING. Original and tasty! They even use compostable spoons and containers. What delicious, decadent ice cream! Ample Hills has an array interesting flavors too, several of which I sampled thanks to the personable guy behind the counter. I settled on a shared, single scoop of Mexican hot chocolate and peanut butter chocolate. For a shared scoop, my ice cream was surprisingly huge and all the more enjoyable. I enjoyed the hot chocolate, but the peanut butter is almost beyond words! I had no idea chocolate peanut butter ice cream could be so good! Not only was the chocolate richly flavored as it should be, but the peanut butter was soo good! I never felt so strongly about peanut butter before either. There were these big chunks of it too. You know what a perfect summer afternoon looks like in Brooklyn? A stroll through Prospect Park, through Grand Army Plaza (make sure to dip your feet in the library fountains), and a trip to Ample Hills Creamery. This place is ridiculous, in the BEST sense of the word. The woman in front of me in line was talking about how the last time she was there, the line stretched halfway around the block, and I can now say I see what the hype is all about. Of the 24 flavors of ice cream and sorbet, I wanted probably, oh, 24 of them. I tasted two (yes! they let you taste more than one...awesome), Salted Crack Caramel & Toffee-Fudgi-Frost, and while both were amazing, I went with the caramel. Everything everyone has said about it is true - it's the best caramel ice cream I've ever had. So delicious...creamy salted caramel with flakes of caramel crackers. The workers were friendly and accommodating, there were adorable kids and puppies outside, and the tables in the booths are decorated with cool pictures. I'll be going back ASAP. read more

Delicious! Had the salted crack caramel. It was as good as everyone says.... at least I think so. After my raves over the salted crack caramel, my girlfriend ordered a cone... she thought it was so disgusting that she actually threw it away. I had 2 other friends taste my crack caramel... my guy friend said it tasted like someone put pepper or hot sauce in it, and my girlfriend said it was bitter and tasted like cyanide.... WTF!?! I think it's delicious, but apparently it's a good idea to try it before you get a full cone. I have been to amany ice cream joints in NY and can't believe it took me so long to stumble upon Ample Hill. I've heard that the lines is always very long when it's above 70degrees out. I went tonight at 10pm and there line was about 15 people. The staff was extremely friendly and I got to try 5 flavors before settling on the salted crack caramel. The caramel taste was strong, but a good balance of sweetness and saltyness. I also liked the Mexican hot chocolate (sweet at first with a kick at the end), the ooey gooey (very sweet but addicting). The stout & pretzels was bitter and tasted too much like alcohol for my taste. So many more flavors to try! read more

People make repeated pilgrimages for the salted crack caramel, but I'm going to put myself out there and say don't order it just sample it. Don't get me wrong, it's delicious - it's sweet, salty, rich, and more than any of that, deeply SMOKY and so unique, but for that reason, one spoonful is seriously enough. Obviously Ample Hills is recognized for its creativity, so you can always get your spoonful of Crack, and still walk away with a flavor you love. As long as the line's not too too crazy they will humor you, because the options are always changing. Regardless of which flavor I choose, I always walk away from Ample Hills buzzing with a sugar high. All of their ice cream is a dense, intense flavor bomb. If you're looking for a casual dessert engagement, DON'T get the sundae. But then again, do. It comes with two flavors, a gooey, warm brownie, and hot fudge or sprinkles. Just know that once you've put down your spoon, you'll definitely be rendered speechless from a sugar crash, so be warned. read more

Now that I'm over my silly decade-long-lactose-intolerance-thingy, Ample Hills just got like a ZILLION BILLION TIMES BETTER. Wow. First of all, I can't go there and not sample every single flavor. And the employees don't really mind if you do it either. In fact, they let you sample as many flavors as you want (because you REALLY won't be able to make up your mind), even if there is an insanely long line. And on a summer night, there will be an insanely long line. It's okay though. You'll get even more excited while you wait, and it will also give you time to narrow down the ridiculous menu even a little bit. On my most recent trip, I opted for a kids sized combination of Crack and PB&J ice cream. I don't think I could have handled more than the kids size of these intense flavors, but it was a great flavor experience. I was pretty thirsty afterwards, but that's what the free water is for. I'm also just so happy that they had a "There's Always Money in the Banana Stand" flavor this weekend. Ample Hills, I love you. read more

Iced Crack would be a more appropriate term for what they sell, but I dont think that would fly with conservative types. (plus, they cover the crack angle with their "salted crack caramel iced cream") There's always a rotating list of iced creams here, and you can basically try them all - as long as you're willing to wait in line - and there will certainly be a line. I've seen the line go out the door. When this happens, I usually steer clear, but if you;re waiting inside, you wont be waiting more than 30 minutes - and the staff is really accommodating once you're up there. I recommend getting at least a large cup of iced cream with 3 different flavors (while trying out at least another 2 flavors). read more

The beau and I finally decided to give this place a shot, after two hours of handball playing, as fuel for the next portion of our date night (contra dancing), which was to be followed by a movie called It Follows (go see this!) Anyway, we both got small cups, which came with two scoops... I'm told it's supposed to be 6 ounces of ice cream for this serving but I'm not too sure about that - the large comes with 4 scoops, the kid size comes with 1 scoop for $3, and then there's this tray for $7.50 that gives you 6 really small scoops. I got the gowanus and the snap, mallow, pop, and my bf got the peppermint and the salted caramel. I tried his peppermint and it was so flavorful, the salted caramel was ok but not my favorite ever. My boyfriend loved both his choices though and called it the best ice cream he's ever had. I have to give that title to the candied ginger at van leeuwen, but I did enjoy my two flavors immensely. Next time, I would definitely try other flavors. Can I just say how packed this place was on a cold evening? We were certain we'd be the only ones with ice cream on the brain but there was a line and all the tables/chairs were taken. We ended up eating at the counter behind the servers, which was totally fine. The line can move a little slow because you are allowed to sample any flavor you want and there are so many flavors it's hard to make up your mind. Our server was very friendly, helpful and patient with us and our grand total was $10.50 - I think that would give you 2 pints of ben and jerry's or hagaan daaz but it was nice to eat in and observe everyone in their happy places as they ate their ice cream. The sugar cone is free (all other cones you have to pay about a dollar extra for) and I saw some posters advertising a movie night, as well as an upstairs area where they host parties (it was in use while we were there). The only minus I would give this establishment is that although they make their ice cream on site and have a cookbook, for some reason you still cannot find the nutritional information for their staple flavors. Very disappointing! To wrap things up, the reviews are high for a reason and this place isn't going anywhere anytime soon regardless of the trek it takes to get there. 4 stars! read more

Which has been bookmarked for a while now. 5 stars just for the unique flavors and ways to try them, the cute sitting area(s) inside and out and the pleasant staff. A true ice cream parlor. Then I tasted the ice cream ... sweet goodness! I had the pistachio and oatmeal flavors in a chocolate chip cone (which I could have done without - but would not effect the rating). Both flavors were rich and had nice sized chucks of the brittle and oatmeal cookie pieces respectively. And the second to smallest size got me two very nice sized scoops. Very satisfying. Best ice cream in New York, hands down. I've had Ample Hills twice in my life (at this location and the one in Gowanus), and both times rocked my world. You'll be greeted by a long line, but it's worth the wait! They have the most interesting and incredible flavors, and lots of them. Fun flavors and really good service is what makes Ample Hills stand out. Before I ordered the Salted crack caramel they adviced me to sample it, because some find it too salty. I like a LOT of salt in my caramel so this was perfect for me, but before I even tasted it the gesture gave me a great impression. While I loved the creative flavors, the actual ice cream wasn't really done the way I personally like it. The mix-ins were way too big, so it was more like eating plain ice cream with a cookie on the side, while I prefer having a little bit of cookie in almost every bite. It also made me notice that on its own, the ice cream became a bit one-note after a while. I also prefer a creamier ice cream, while this one was more watery. Really 3.5 stars. I appreciate their use of local sustainable ingredients, compostable materials and their inventive, original flavors. The staff were all really enthused and helpful, always letting everyone try multiple flavors, always smiling and polite - often a rarity in some of the more hipster-y parts of Brooklyn. The ice cream was no doubt good, but didn't knock my socks off, save for the root beer flavored one. That was amazing. I had a scoop of Banana Hammock and Vanilla Malted, and both were good, but...just good. Also sampled the Peppermint Patty flavor, and again...good. But alas, no ice cream orgasm for me. I first sampled Ample Hills at the Dirty Projectors show in Prospect Park a few weeks ago. I chose the chocolate flake and wasn't disappointed--the vanilla ice cream was delicious, balanced by the dark chunks of chocolate. And then I ended up in Prospect Heights, at Soda Bar for drinks with friends. I stumbled out of the bar after having been inside all afternoon, and was directly faced with Ample Hills across the street. I had a long walk home, so I decided to fortify. I was blown away by the sheer variety of flavors on offer. I wanted one of everything! But standing in line, there were so many accolades for the salted caramel crack, I had to try it. I have to say I was a little disappointed with the flavor itself--the caramel ice cream has a slightly burnt flavor, which is unique, but not my thing. However, the chocolate covered bits of saltines were worth digging for, and there were plenty in my scoop to keep me happy. My companion got the Bananamon and it was delicious. I don't even like banana-flavor, but it wasn't overwhelming, and had a sweet cinnamon undercurrent. It's a good thing Ample Hills is not accessible at all from my apartment, otherwise I think I would be there every single night. As it stands, I think I'll take the opportunity every time I'm in Prospect Heights. read more

I love this place and am SO GLAD it is far away from my apartment. If it was nearby I would weigh roughly 533.9 pounds. And I'm only 5'2"! The employees are very friendly and helpful, and seem to actually enjoy their jobs. I would gladly come back even if their only flavor was cinnamon because it is that good. Dare I say even better than Van Leeuwen's cinnamon ice cream? That's a pretty tough standard to beat, but they have. I recently bought a whole pint of it and ate a crapload of it in my first sitting. Thank goodness for lactaid pills. I also have had the ooey gooey, which was only pretty good in my opinion, although I could see why others would love it so much (including the employee who recommended it to me, his eyes lit up while he described it). Their sweet cream and cookies is great too. I can only assume their other flavors are as amazing as the ones I've been lucky enough to try. I'm sure I will stop by when I'm in the area, and perhaps I will go out of my way to try a new flavor when I'm only kind of nearby. read more

I came here after dinner this past evening, and let me tell you, this place is worth the trek! This is some of the best ice cream I have tasted in a long time and the flavors are simply wonderful. I ordered a milkshake with Sweet cream and cookies and chocolate milk and cookies. Let me say this, the shake was stunning! It was thick and very flavorful, just as a good shake should be. I was sort of peeved that the line was so long when i walked in but I realized that it's because they don't rush you when you get up the the counter and they let you try the flavors first (though some people really abuse this courtesy). I tried the Mexican Hot Chocolate but it was too rich for my taste. Ended up going with Salted "crack" caramel and Mocha Flake. Both delicious and creamy. You can taste the quality in their ice cream. I think I may still prefer Blue Marble but this is just a matter of texture. If you're in the area, definitely stop by! The ice cream here is creamy with unique flavors. I got the Salted Crack Caramel ice cream and the Ooey Goey Butter Cake ice cream. I also tried a bit of my friend's Dark Chocolate ice cream. The dark chocolate ice cream was... well, really really chocolatey. It was rich and so delicious, a perfect scoop for any chocolate lover. The Ooey Gooey Butter Cake was really good. It was basically vanilla ice cream with chunks of gooey butter cake. I loved the chewy texture of the gooey butter cake chunks with the smoothness of the ice cream. The Salted Crack Caramel had these awesome chunks of the "crack cookies," which are made of saltines, butter, sugar, and chocolate. The flavor of the salted caramel is really intense in this ice cream. It wasn't too salty, in fact I would of liked if it had been a little saltier. Yes, call me crazy. The caramel flavor was akin to a burnt sugar. It had a really dark deep caramel flavor. I am dying to try the Chocolate Brownie Sundae. It looked absolutely amazing. read more

As I was driving down Vanderbilt one day I had this sudden sweet tooth which craved some ice cream. I remember having this place in my bookmarks for sometime so it came to mind to just stop by Ample Hills since I was nearby. As I went inside the smell of SWEETNESS HIT ME RIGHT IN THE NOSE! It was like I was a kid in the candy store along with the throwback jams playing. I must say the line was pretty long and as I got closer to ordering I realized that they had menus handy but I kinda already knew what I was getting from the menu photoed on Yelp... Thanks Yelp. So I finally got up front to ordered and was greeted by two very attentive and friendly young men. I decided on a small cone which came with a choice of two scoop (mix & match if you'd like) with a flavor cone. I choose the flavors PB wins the Cup and Snap, Mallow Pop on a Pretzel cone. PB Wins the Cup was a chunky peanut putter flavored ice cream with peanut butter cups and a fudge swirl. Snap, Mallow Pop is a marshmallow flavored ice cream with crisped rice. Both were really good but PB Wins the cup was my favorite. Ample Hills gets my vote as some of the best ice cream I've had yet and I will be going back to try other flavors. read more

Oh...it's good. If there's one place I miss in Brooklyn, it's Ample Hills Creamery. After dining across the street, my inner fat girl said, "Hey, you - I would like some ice cream despite the fact that I just completely over-ate at dinner." Needless to say - I kindly obliged. The line was almost out the door, so clearly I knew it had to be good, and I stuck it out. Once I made it to the front, I ordered a scoop of Vanilla Malted (vanilla ice cream with malt essence...oh my gah...) and my then-partner, now-husband ordered the Breakfast Trash, which is essentially breakfast cereal in an ice cream. Both were delightfully fresh (due to their being made on site - which you can view while waiting in line), and were some of the best ice cream I've ever tried. I've gone back many times to sample additional flavors (salted crack caramel...chocolate malted...brunch...), and they've all been scrumptious. Truly great stuff. If you find yourself in Prospect Heights and your inner fat girl is crying for ice cream, appease her with some Ample Hills. She'll reward you greatly. read more

Luckily, the staff is super nice, and you can try as many flavors as you want before committing to just one (for this visit, at least). I've come to realize that there are two types of ice cream fans out there: those who like chunks of stuff in their ice cream, and those who do not. I fall into the latter category, preferring nothing larger than chocolate shavings, mini yogurt drops, or possibly some honey-granola sprinkled among my choice. Ample Hills offers options for both ilks, ie.: Breakfast Trash for the chunk-bent and Pure Sunshine for the smooth-choosers. I've had the pleasure of discovering several flavors that I really love, and also tried some that weren't my favorite, but at least they were creative and a break from the mundane. It's a great addition to the neighborhood.
