The Amtrak network is split into six regions: California, Midwest, South, Northeast, Northwest and West. It connects over 500 destinations, including big cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and more. One time I thought I wanted to arrive in NYC by train from Miami Florida. It's the old romantic movies I had seen creating visions of glamour and excitement as you are welcomed in Penn Station. Even though I was being met by my daughter I anticipated the glamour of arrival. I also remembered my train ride from Florida to New York with my Mother when I was little. I had so much fun and my mother had motion sickness the whole way! As I should have known a trip of that length would be uncomfortable unless you had a sleeping car. The train was crowded too because I decided to attempt this in July. All the kids were out of school and going to theme parks. The bathroom became filthy in time and the children impatient with the ride. The parents impatient with the children. I sat with my headphones music blasting and looked out the window during daylight hours. My legs cramping and butt hurt but at night I tried to get a little sleep. The kids finally disembarked by then. The experience was miserable on the return trip also because I cried all the way back to Florida. I had plenty of time during that train ride to make a decision and a plan to move back to NYC. The experience is not one I want to repeat. We were held up in Florida by railroad crossings during Florida tropical downpours. In Washington D.C. we were held up by train problems and train traffic trying to get in and out. When I finally arrived my daughter greeted me with a look of chagrin because she couldn't find me. This was pre cell phones. By the time I arrived I was traveling a full 24 hours at least. From then on I took a plane! I'm not saying I wouldn't try one of their travel packages for a short excursion. I do think car travel is still my favorite! read more

Ok let's be real. Train in USA is outdated government don't put enough money to upgrade the train system, comparing to China and Japan. Train is very slow but comfortable and clean, if I would compare to car it fast. It took one hour to get from Philadelphia to New York. Staff was good so I would say great service Food inside the train expensive but tastes like a food. I would definitely will use Amtrak again and would recommend to others. read more

On our trip from Holyoke to Penn station, despite the fact that we had bought tickets, there weren't enough seats available until 2 stations later. For the trip from NY to Washington DC aboard the Acela line, although we had reserved seats we accidentally sat in the wrong car. The conductor for that car first yelled at us for talking in normal voices (it turned out to be the "quiet car" and then looked at our tickets and said "y'all are in the WRONG CAR' without any further instructions besides telling us to leave. Before booking my first Amtrak trip, I was a bit nervous because of all the bad reviews. However, my experience was smooth, and quite relaxing at that! Prior to boarding the train, I waited in the Amtrak waiting area at Penn Station. Passengers must show an Amtrak ticket to sit in this designated area. The boarding process was smooth. You can tell the trains were cleaned before boarding because it smelled extra fresh. I was a bit hesitant to travel on Amtrak due to Covid, but the cleanliness of the trains put me at ease. Also, almost all passengers had the whole row to themselves, which is another bonus! I was also surprised at how modern the train was. There was plenty of leg room to stretch out. My train left at the exact time of departure, and we even arrived a few minutes early to my destination. Riding up along then Hudson was such a peaceful experience! read more

I grew up in NY and recently moved to Boston from Florida. I recently had cause to cancel my flight and take the Acela from Boston to NYC and then back. Overall the experience on the train was good, however the experience at the Moynihan Train hall was exceptional. The staff was friendly and helpful which is pretty amazing for NYC. Anyone who has traveled through Europe by train can't help but conclude that America's national passenger rail system is anything but a bucket of bolts. Despite billions in government largess and a POTUS who believes our national train line is his personal model railroad, Amtrak is continuously kneecapped by antiquated equipment and inferior tracking. Oh, I like the train well enough especially in small doses (NYC to PHL or DC) but on longer hauls, I couldn't imagine the 30 hour slog to Miami in a dingy tube as the romance of the rails suddenly evaporates somewhere around Richmond when I realize Ingrid Bergman isn't meeting me on the other end. While flying in steerage certainly isn't a treat, that torture chamber is mercifully over in 2.5 hours. The problem is the idea of Amtrak is far more appealing than the reality of Amtrak. I'll always love a train but the line between nostalgia and delusion is thin and only goes so far, like to DC. What are we spending billions on again? read more

Took Amtrak while traveling with my family upstate. All riders had on masks, conductors were courteous and directed riders to the appropriate ticketed carts. Train arrived on time at Penn Station, but seemed packed and overbooked. Although, I don't know how that would happen but a rider was unable to find a seat for her and her little baby. Conductor told her to sit in business class instead, since there's a few seats available there. The ride itself was smooth and arrived at my destination right on time. I do enjoy the scenic view across the Hudson River Valley, that was a pretty nice touch. read more

After 16 years of frequent travel between Connecticut and Virginia, our most recent trip on the Northeast Regional 171 has convinced us that we will consider no longer using Amtrak. The cars are rundown and filthy--stained carpet, scratched windows, weak AC, doors that don't work, and useless Wi-Fi. Announcements are garbled, rushed, and unhelpful; conductors are rarely visible and give vague directions, leaving passengers confused about where to disembark. The worst part was the one conductor between NYC and DC: she was openly hostile, rude, and aggressive to passengers, creating an atmosphere where people felt afraid to ask for help. In contrast, one conductor named David was excellent, but he was the exception. Tim in the Cafe car was extremely friendly & professional. For the prices Amtrak charges, this level of service is unacceptable. Air travel is now cheaper, cleaner, and far more reliable. Sadly, after years of loyalty, we will no longer recommend Amtrak. read more

For anything outside the New York -- Washington section it's better to take a plane. Most schedules are highly unreliable. When services are delayed they provide zero useful information and don't give you a chance to find alternative transport (I am writing this past midnight about 200m outside a station where Amtrak have been holding several hundred people for hours, most of whom could have taken an Uber home). read more

I went to Penn station which I hate to visit ,to pick up a family friend via Amtrak and I must say , many improvements..The waiting area is bright and clean with plenty of seating and space. Plenty of security roaming around and that's important and the arrival and departure electronic message board is accurate and easy to understand. Plenty of places to grab something to eat and drink as well. Amtrak has made many upgrades and service advancements and someone like me who has not used Amtrak for travel is impressed by the changes. read more

Can get you where you want to go. Pretty mediocre in most other ways. The iPhone app barely works. Wi-Fi on the train doesn't work. Announcements over PA system are hard to hear. Inconsistent policies between the many trains and stations they have. Some support checked luggage, some don't. Some allow pets, some don't. Takes some work to find out which is which. Passable for trips under 200 miles. More than that, I'd rather fly--much faster and you don't need to deal with Amtrak's issues. They really should automate their ticket scanning process. read more

NEXT TIME I WILL RENT A CAR AND DRIVE MYSELF ** I booked a round trip ticket from NYC to Boston mostly because their web site had a fierce mask policy and even a spot you had to check confirming you would wear a mask before you could purchase the ticket. My question is why bother with all of this when the policy is not enforced at all?? No one around me on my train to Boston wore a mask; even the conductor had his down. The Covid-19 pandemic is easing, but it's not over and some of us chose Amtrak because we thought it would be safe! It's not safe. These trains are not safe if you are looking to not breathe in everyone else's germs. Plus the train was boiling hot and of course that is incentive for everyone to tear their mask off. Why why why was the heat on full blast in May?! What a nightmare. The train back to NYC was ripe with people coughing and sniffling and making tons of noise in the QUIET CAR. (I managed to sit alone and did not see if they had masks. I was afraid to look. I wore mine plus a scarf.) Finally I asked the conductor to do something about the noise and she did, but why did I have to do her job?? She could plainly see and hear for herself. Both trips were AWFUL. I didn't get the names of the people working at the Amtrak customer service desk today (5/22/2023), but they were absolutely amazing and I wish I could thank them again in person. My original train was 2 hours delayed, so Amtrak switched me to another that was running on schedule. Of course, I thought I had the foresight to plan ahead for my new 7:00pm train, but forgot to take into account NYC's unpredictable downtown traffic. I missed boarding by what was probably seconds, and I was sent to the help desk to switch. At the desk, they were able to get me back on to my original train and out of the station in less than 10 minutes. I don't know if it was divine intervention or what, but I am so thankful for their kindness, which kept me from being stranded alone at the station. Thank you Amtrak! read more

My daughters original depart time from S C was at 4 am had a delay of 9 hours. 9 hours later she leave to arrive to Virginia where there was another delay over 4 hours. Stating that there is a crew change. No updates after that. She will never travel Amtrak again. They are very irresponsible and unreliable. read more

Amtrak gives off a complete "I couldn't give less of a F". We were early for our train and waited by the board diligently. Track number then came out but board continued to say standby, unsure we asked an Amtrak personal about it and was told that means the train isn't here yet. So we kept waiting while other trains started to indicate neon boarding letters but ours continued to be standby. 5 min later, our train disappears completely. We rush to the same lady only to be told now it's left...but HOW??? Our train never said boarding or last call. We tried to plead our case but only to be told it's 180 to change our ticket. It's hey you want to waste the money you already spent? If not, pay the difference. You want to get to DC or not? If so, pay the difference. Only option was to completely lose out or to pay up. But the board! we insisted and no one cared. Oh talk to the manager, who said oh call this number, who said back to the manager, who said call this 1800 number. Should we be punished for the faulty board and have to pay 180?!? Rather the train should be apologizing to us for faulty equipment, and compensating us for wasted time and added stress. Really bad service. Always hours late getting in from DC to NY... whether it's Acela or on of the regional trains. should have been in NY at 8:27. It's now 9:20 and I am sitting in a train stuck at the Newark station with no update on when it's going to move. This service will get folks fired from their jobs. It is far from dependable. There's an engine at the station and the whistle calls my name, unfortunately without the storied call of "All Aboard", which I had so anxiously hoped to hear. Boarding was quick and easy as I sallied forth to take an unassigned seat. Not exactly the first class rail carriage like I had quickly daydreamd about, more of a twenty plus year old rail car that should be reaching mandatory retirement age. With seats large enough to accommodate the corpluent, not I of course, they begin comfortably enough, but that changes. It's as if they're hardening with each new town and add in the relatively unsmooth entire nine hundred mile ride and they become quite a nuisance. My frequent trips to the Bar Car was a self inflicted financially poor decision buying rounds of Dogfish Head 90 Day IPA at an individual price that would fund a day at the picture show. Self inflicted poor decision of further consumption came next with a microwaved cheeseburger that is still haunting my innards seven hours later. A 5:51AM Penn Station depart time gets me in Charleston (in scheduling theory) at 7:19PM. It's now 9:01 PM and we just entered South Carolina, I could have flown to South Korea by now. This old clanker gets no respect because it rides upon rails owned by the freight companies and therefore --- must heed way. This is a problem when track repair is being done leaving only one rail line to share. But I guess lumber and seed trump birthdays, holidays and other inconsequential life matters I'm too tired to complain anymore, but. Hey AMTRAK, here's an idea. Create a system where when a new conducting crew boards, (we had three new crews) they do not have to raise their voices loudly to wake up sleeping passengers to see their travel documents. Unfortunately my experience riding AMTRAK has really been more of a nightmare than an enjoyable experience since 2016. Fares have increased, they no longer accept the AAA discount and prices are now close to airfare ! My last two trips were nightmares because the commute to North Carolina felt like a voyage to the motherland ! The Palmetto/Carolinian is always delayed returning back to NYC. Returning home at 4:00 a.m. after you were told your train would arrive after midnight. There are never any LIRR trains running from Penn Station after 1:00 a.m. Imagine being stranded in a station filled with 1/2 the homeless population in NYC. You're now exhausted from traveling on a train with no air conditioning in the summer and you just want your bed. Imagine traveling with a child and having to keep their spirits up and entertain them throughout all of this ? Unfortunately this has been the only way to travel "more affordably " with my daughter to North Carolina but enough is enough AMTRAK. Why not create a different route ? With less stops ? Better food available ? Functional train cars. Why not put the high fares we pay to good use ? The experience is so subpar for the hefty price we pay. read more

Literally the worst experience I have ever encountered. Your one job as an Amtrak employee is to direct customers to their correct destination and I got NOTHING of the sorts. I was told to get on the wrong train and then once on the train the conductor told me I needed to get off on the next stop. As someone that isn't familiar with the area and genuinely needed guidance it was really scary to be put in a position where I was stranded at the fault of an Amtrak employee. Being gay and biracial in an unfamiliar unsafe area being left at night was frightening and being told it was quote "not their problem" - left me feeling very sick. I would strongly recommend that any traveler NOT to take Amtrak unless it is a last resort. I booked an Acela round-trip train from NYC to Wilmington, DE for a long weekend. Beginning the morning of departure, I received dozens of automated text messages, pushing the departure time later and later every 15 minutes. The train leaving NYC left 90 minutes after scheduled. It was insanely frustrating watching the schedule board, seeing trains scheduled to leave after my train actually leaving before it. Meanwhile, there were virtually no Amtrak agents to be found at NYP, until it was finally boarding time. And when he instructed the passengers to go down the correct escalator, he was joking about how late the train was, as if we didn't have actual value or stakes in being on time. The return trip was way worse. The train left Wilmington approximately 30 minutes late. At the stop in Trenton, NJ, we received a message over the PA that, due to "rain in New Jersey,' all trains were being held and were unable to travel north to NYC. That is unfortunate but understandable; nobody can control the weather. The conductor then announces that passengers are free to leave the train if they'd like. To make sure I made the right choice, I called Amtrak's 1-800 number to see if I would be reimbursed for out-of-pocket costs due to the train's stoppage. I was told by the representative that I would be, and she provided me with a phone number to call in order to receive reimbursement. I ended up taking a rideshare service from Trenton to Queens (a 2-hour car ride). I called the phone number the next day and was denied reimbursement, despite the fact that I was told it would be provided. Longer story short: after speaking with several reps at Amtrak CS, some have transferred me to voicemail, one was a booking agent who pretended to be CS and lied "to save time," and others simply show no interest in helping me reconcile the fact that I was lied to. They take no accountability or interest in helping their passengers. Bottom line: Amtrak is frequently late, and will not lift a finger to help you with any issues. AVOID IF YOU CAN! read more

Mrs. and I paid $105 per person for coach seating. There was a specific waiting room with sests in the Moynihan Train Terminal for Amtrack customers only. Two sets of dedicated and clean restrooms were available in this area also. However, the Amtrack broading process was chaotic. The display broad in the waiting room did not show what track to broad the train. We had to ask an Amtrack employee in the main lobby. By then, the broading line was super long. There was no TSA on site for clearance before broading. The seating of the coach was similar to a small budget airplane, tight leg room and uncomfortable seat. My butt was hurting two hours in. In fact. Southwest Airline seat was more comfortable. There was plenty of overhead space for luggage. We would do Amtrack again because the Amtrack terminals are conveniently located in most East Coast cities. No TSA also adds to the convenience. Prices are competitive with low-budget airlines. read more

I have ridden Amtrak a few times in the past and enjoyed it. Most recently, my husband and I decided to use it to get to NYC for our 10th wedding anniversary. We don't love to fly, we love the idea of lowering our carbon footprint by exploring alternative forms of travel, and we had the perfect opportunity in taking the Carolinian from Durham, NC straight through to NYC! We loved the spacious seats, and the ability to get up whenever we wanted to use the restroom, stretch our legs, or go to the "cafe club car." For the most part the staff was amazing- so friendly, chatty and helpful. We loved watching the scenery as we traveled through NC, VA and the northeast. Another great thing about Amtrak is that we were able to bring quite a bit of luggage and quite a bit of food! I brought cans of soda, cut up veggies and dips, and even sandwiches. We ate some food from the cafe club car, but it wasn't really worth the money for the microwaved cheeseburger or whatever. The train is not necessarily your most economical choice, but it's not too bad. Since there's wifi, plenty of plugs, and no real rules regarding electronics you do have your fair share of rude people talking on speakerphone, or watching shows really loud, or mistakenly thinking they're the next Whitney Houston. But you can always get up and switch seats (there were tons of empty ones on our train!). My husband spent a lot of time in the cafe club car working on his laptop with a lot of table top to himself. Meanwhile, I was able to sleep across our two chairs. It was a win-win! Our experiences at Penn Station in New York with the Amtrak employees were all very pleasant, too. I was nervous about how we would know where to go and everyone had a very upbeat and calming personality and helped us so we didn't miss our train. Another great part about taking Amtrak to Penn Station is you can just walk out of the station and you're in the city- no long commute from an airport. Our hotel was a 10 minute walk (or a 4 minute Lyft ride, or 1 subway stop) from the station. I really enjoyed my time on the train and would do it again in a heartbeat! I only wish there were more places to go directly from our city, so we didn't have to transfer. read more

Dangerous during Covid times! Despite announcements at each stop that face masks covering the nose and mouth were mandatory, the Conductor did not enforce mask wearing at all in the Business Class car. Instead, he permitted those without masks to do as they pleased. Several men were without masks for the entire 4 hour journey, while others wore them below their noses and chins! Why pay extra for Business Class when the risk is as high in the more crowded Economy Class sections? Their website is non-functional on mobile. So I called. Jumped through 15 minutes of Q&A with "Julie" only to get disconnected at payment. Called back and went through the entire process again, only to be given a two-hour wait time for callback. Connected to callback at 2:20, and told I would now have a 1 minute wait time. An "unexpected extended wait time" has kept me on hold for 25 minutes..,and counting. (Yes, I'm typing this while on hold.) Honestly, this is not worth the hassle. If you hadn't already taken my money, I'd be riding Metro North instead. There is nothing about this train that's magic. read more

We took the train from New York City to New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to my partner's health issues we had the handicap accessible accommodations. The room was very spacious and had adequate sleeping for both of us with me on the top bunk and him on the pull out sofa bed. We sat side by side and talked and looked out the large windows along the way. There was a separate bathroom with commode, shower and sink. There were many safety bars to hold onto. We are foodies so the food they served was not very tasty to us but is definitely better than airplane food. We chose to get the continental breakfast each morning and order extra of everything off the menu to eat for lunch and dinner. We recommend bringing your own toilet paper!! The one provided was extremely thin! Our attendants were pleasant, attentive and helpful in both directions of our journey. The 30 hours flew by for us. read more

I am giving Amtrak a 5 star review here because of the superb service at the Metropolitan Lounge. Everyone there gives great service, especially Christian! Thank you! All that said, it is kind of head scratching to walk into the new Moynihan Train Hall and not be a bit taken back that unless you can get into the lounge, there is basically no place to sit while waiting for your train in the hall. I personally ride Amtrak often enough that I can now get into the lounge with just a train ticket thanks to Select status. But without that I would either need a free pass from Amtrak, a first-class Acela ticket, or $50. So it kind of feels that tax payer money went towards further dividing the haves from the have nots. I don't mind there being a nice lounge that may cost a little extra to get into but I honestly don't see why there can't be seats in the main hall for everyone to use. As for the trains itself, I use Amtrak to get to and from New England, and for that I vastly prefer it over flying. I live much closer to the train station than any airport so it's quicker for me to get to and I don't have to go through a bunch of security. read more
