I'm glad they lock the drug users out of the bathroom so ticketed passengers who happen to be menstruating women can sit in a pool of their own blood ahead of boarding the train - as the code for the bathroom can be given to you by the nonexistent agent behind the constantly closed front desk :)))))) No other nearby bathroom, had an emergency, now I'm a biohazard. I don't see why some people are upset but if you are taking Cascades this is a pretty cool station. I went to Salem by car but returned to California from here via Coast Starlight. This is a pretty cool station if you are trying to look for somewhere off the grid to ride the train. I run offices in Portland and some times I come to this station because I need to ride the train down south to Eugene. There should be 0 need to complain because this station is not cramped, noisy or full of tough people who refuse to leave. This is a really calming train station. Do not allow persons aboard that have filthy clothes and Body odor from months of not bathing. It is not fair to the people that have to sit close by a nut like that. I was told he would be taken off the train but he remained. So disgusting. I will be flying home. read more

Is there a rate less than one star? That's what I would give this for customer service! I was told that there is no printed schedule for a southbound train that travels every day out of this station! She's completely ignorant of amtracks policy and had no interest in solving the problem she helped create. Rude , ignorant, unhelpful. Big, open, uncrowded -- big parking lot right next to the building! Lots of great things about this Amtrak station. And a beautiful piece of property. The people running the desk and station area were friendly and helpful in every possible way. Can I just suggest an awning or covered area outside? Just a tin roof or something.... As we waited for the Pacific Coast Starlight to take us to L.A. -- the icy rain (which started as a light drizzle) overtook us. By the time we waited for passengers to de-train (lol) and for the conductors to figure out which cars had seats still available -- we were soaked! And so was our luggage. (!) The train was sold out, and it was a crowd of wet rats that finally made it into that train. The guy waiting in front of us, hand-carrying his Stratocaster to a gig in Martinez CA, got the worst of it People were holding their coats over him to keep the guitar dry. I save my serious bagging for Greyhound, which I can do a twenty minute stand up about. Amtrak is still a mess, but I can happily report the inner state carrier that suppliments Amtrak makes getting from, say, PDX to Salem is pretty doggone swell. $25, which includes my backpack and Clarice the Wonder Bike one way..well, gosh, that's gas money. FYI, I paid $5 to take my bike. If you *must* travel with your pets, add $25/per beastie. We have not reached perfection, which I assume, dear reader you would expect, but it's getting there. The bus that I took down, must have been luxurious thirty years ago, though it should be sold and shipped to Bangladesh. As I head home, our ride is more like the fancypants busses one might take to the casinos . As for the station itself, both money and care have been taken in the restoration. Salem is semi-bike-freindly and the station is a quick walk or ride into Salem's cool old town as well as the capital. The governor was not in--I had hoped to give her a piece of my mind and stiff her for the price of lunch. I look at travel like this as a fun adventure. If you are looking for a Virgin Airlines experience, you will be badly disappointed. Another big sell to me traveling by ground is there really isn't any pesky security to go through. I suppose buses and trains are considered small potatoes to Evil. If you look at this with your Greyhound/Amtrak glasses on, I think you will be happily suprised. read more

This is a rating of Amtrak incompetence, not necessarily this location. The train despite its timing has been a long time cherished alternative for a ride from WA to OR and vise versa but will never be trusted again. Despite the accident, their dependability, reliability, communication, and solutions are utter garbage. I waited all day for the arrival of my bf from Olympia, which originally should have been 1pm in Albany OR. Instead the train pulled over for 4 hours and never made the connecting train in Portland. Early on In an attempt to beat the train at its own perpetual late game, I drove from Albany to Salem to wait. However once they finally arrived to Portland at 4pm, with no connecting train and no bus alternate my bf was absolutely stranded for the start of the holidays! This after they had the nationally recognized crash and had to use the original route for continued travel. Even still it's entirely unacceptable to strand passengers for the holidays. No communication to the passengers in advance of the potential connections being missed was made and I had to face the horrid traffic to Portland at 5'oclock on the Friday before Christmas which made us beyond late to our family gathering we had already being postponing based on the arrival times. If you need a way of travel, use bolt bus! read more

Nice and clean. Friendly attendants more than willing to help and offer assistance. Historic building that has an old town feel to it. Lots of benches outside to sit at. Only downside is you need a coin to use the restroom. read more

Amtrak is Amtrak, meaning it is what it is: Public transportation. I'm used to being in a cramped, crowded, and loud area..this is quite the opposite. First, it's very open and quiet when I went there, so much so that I thought it was closed lol. The Greyhound bus stops there as well, so extra points for that. Overall, this place is pretty cute and feels like a trip back in time (in a good way). read more

This little train station is so cute! I remember when they did the renovation and I have to say it looks great! Lots of history in this place. This is the first time taking the train since I was about 9. I had downloaded the app and I'm glad my mom told me that my ticket was actually the bus to Portland and then the train from there to Seattle. The facility is clean and the employees are very helpful. The bus arrived on time and it even had wifi! Really had a great experience with my first bus/train ride. I got to see a lot of the countryside. The only downfall is that I thought since it's around Christmas time that the trains and employees would dress up to look like the movie polar express but they didn't :/ regardless it was a great experience and I'm looking forward to taking the train more often when I visit. read more

This is a review for mainly the train route that stops here, not the station itself. Station was clean, had several interesting pictures of the history of the station, and the employees were friendly and helpful. Amtrak in general needs to have its own tracks like systems in Japan and China do. I usually drive from Salem to Eugene, but thought I would try Amtrak's $14 round trip coupon, as that saved me $30 in gas. I took this train a total of 6 times, all being positive up until the most recent trip. I arrived at the Salem station on time, and waited for the train, which also arrived on-time. About 10 minutes after the train departed, we stopped for maintenance that was being done on the track. Understandable, but still frustrating. The workers moved their equipment, and in about 15 minutes, the train was moving again. But about 5 miles before the Albany stop, once again, the train stopped. MOST RIDICULOUS planning I've ever seen. There was a freight train PARKED on the tracks, with no conductor, or anyone else working on the train. The Amtrak conductor explained the situation, and that we would be waiting for about 45 minutes for Union Pacific to come move the train out of the way. WE WAITED THERE FOR 4 HOURS. Finally, 6 hours after leaving Salem, we arrived in Eugene. No apologies, no refunds or coupons offered for next trip, just "have a great day"?! I tried FlixBus a few months later, which stops in Salem right across from the Downtown Transit Center, making it easy for those who don't drive. It arrived in Eugene at the exact minute it was scheduled to! Not taking Amtrak anytime soon, not until they run on their own tracks! read more

Our experience was poor after being YELLED at by one of the employees named Lisa in Salem, OR (wears glasses, brown hair) for not knowing what we were doing (haven't ridden the train in years). Lisa needs to find an outlet for her anger and for Amtrak's sake, it probably shouldn't be released on the customers. read more

On Tuesday, August 14 I rode the Amtrak back home from Bellingham with my 11 month old and 10 year old. It had been a really long day. We were scheduled for the 10pm mtr/Oregon point bus from Portland to Salem. Tom was our driver. He was immediately very helpful and informative. We also used Amtrak for the northern route. And of the three bus trips we had, Tom's was the only one where the driver addressed us before the trip started. Explaining the bus and the onboard wifi, restroom and safety features. When we arrived in Salem, I'd already decided I was going to write about Tom. It was nearly midnight and I couldn't wait to get home. But, the train station downtown anywhere at that time can be a little intimidating. A drug dealer walked by while I was loading bags and kids into the car. Within a minute, Tom appeared. He explained that he was a retired Marine and Police Officer and that he'd just like to stay with me while I finished getting the carseat back in, bags loaded and baby buckled in to make sure we were safe. I honestly cannot say enough about how much this meant to me. Tom went out of his way to make sure we stayed safe, and especially at the end of a long day of travelling it was such a breathe of fresh air and a relief. I will recommend your company and line, in hopes you recruit more drivers like Tom. read more

A huge thank you to Lori and Scott at the Salem Or Amtrak depot. Lori helped us so much with explaining carry on (which we had too much of to start) . Since Centralia Wa station was closed we couldn't check our bags which was the original plan. So she offered us several options, We chose to condense down our bags, let me tell it wasn't easy, but we did it. Thank goodness we arrived two hours early. We also observed Lori and Scott helping others who arrived and with kindess and understanding helped an elderly gentleman, direct folks to the Greyhound window and generally keep us up to date with the late arrival of our train. read more
