I recently traveled by train from Chicago to Seattle to San Francisco then returned to Chicago. ALL, and I mean ALL of the staff were smiling, cheerful and so helpful. Some had quite a sense of humor :-) I had a sleeper car which was very clean. The food was great! Met some very nice people in the diner. The scenery was relaxing. This is a street side bus stop for the Amtrak Connector Bus. The address to this location is: 401 Mission Street, with Fremont Street as the cross street. So you can give your Uber or Lyft driver this pickup or drop-off info. This bus stop has no shelter, so it's totally uncovered. But, it faces across from the Salesforce Transit Center, that's within walking distance. There is a small seating area that's about 20 feet away, but it's more like a block of concrete you can sit on. It's a one-way street, but traffic is very busy in this area. MUNI buses also runs on the island right across from this stop. There can be some transient folks around, but it's the nature of the downtown area. Never taking this ghetto bus/train Amtrak again! Taking Amtrak from Oakland to Reno was a complete nightmare! On the way back, they cancelled on two different days. The third day was filled with a 5 hour delay. But that's not all: a $83 dollar ticket suddenly jumped to a $468 ticket for those who wanted to ride on the third day and go back home. Completely disorganized and price gouging to say the least. And no, this wasn't just a "weather" issue. As I said... they gouge prices after cancelling on two consecutive days (cancelling at the last minute). How can you rationalize a $83 ticket jumping to $468?? Besides that, someone was really concerned (rightly so) when they noticed the bus having completely bald tires (no threads) and the bus was old and worn out. The electrical did not work on the bus... and no wifi... this is what I paid for? The least you can do is not price-gouge after people get delayed for two days and then have to wait over 5 hours on the third day. Also... after I got the phone notification and phone message on the first day that my trip was cancelled... I called, and the lady had no idea what I was talking about... I had to call three times, and finally, they sorted out that, yeah, indeed, there was a cancellation. They are completely incompetent. read more

Greyhound buses are so comfortable, and they have an odor - a combination of desperation and sadness, and of course nasty body odor. Go to the Salesforce Gondola further down on Mission towards downtown. The Amtrak bus no longer stops at 555 Mission. And if you should happen to require the Amtrak bus to SoCal, don't do it. It's a white unmarked bus with claustrophobic seats. Every time the bus turned to one side or the other, the unlocked overhead compartment doors open on the opposite side of the bus and slam shut. So much for continuous sleep on a 7-hour bus ride. Oh! And on the highway! Hold onto your health insurance. It rattles and shakes at highway speeds. Better to sleep if you can. During Covid Amtrak, the taxpayer funded RR, failed. I had to cancel my reservations due to medical doctor said I could not travel. The manager at Amtrak charged me a cancellation fee, while my airline, car rental and Hotel allowed no charge or total refund. Also at the station I was to leave from required that I showed my PCR Test, but did not allow a printer be available to print it. My phone does not have data plan. read more

I started my trip on Friday and I was supposed to get into my destination on Sunday. My train has been breaking down the whole time with engine problems. We were an hour late leaving Albany, an hour and a half late leaving Chicago because it did not get in on time, we had to wait for the food delivery to get there and unloaded before we can leave. The staff members are not friendly, one of them also had the audacity to make fun of my son and disrespect him in front of my face. I love Amtrak. Great way to relax and see the country. If you are in a rush, fly. Consider the view a part of the vacation. I always get a room for privacy, comfort and meals and beverages included. The staff are very nice and the porters are helpful since I am handicapped. The only complaint is all the $$$ is going to east coast runs and the western trains suffer. I am advising that you NOT spend $1 with Amtrak. This has been the unsafest trip I've ever taken. With the storm the just hit New England on 8/4 they informed me that I could take the train the next day. 5/6 HOURS into my train ride the notified the passengers we must get off the train in New York without any explanation and we must figure out our own accommodations. I am currently going through an absolute nightmare with Amtrak. My Wife and I had planned a cross-country trip for our 25th Anniversary. Purchase in March for September 2020. I put the deposit down with our debit card, then immediately removed/changed to our CC to add additional trip protection etc. as well as purchasing their own travel protection plan. By Late May we realized it would be in our best interest to cancel this trip until things may or might settle down with Covid-19. I called and canceled and figured that was that. Yesterday afternoon they wiped out our checking account and over drafted us by thousands of dollars. They are now actually fighting us on this, saying they have no record of the cancellation. I said fine then cancel us now. They stated that we are not entitled to a refund. That we are only eligible for future travel vouchers. This is despite all of their advertising, emails and website stating that there will be "No Hassles Refunds with no fees" for all trips booked before April 20th due to Covi-19. I have spoken with several agents who are telling me that they never give money back, only travel vouchers. We currently filing a dispute with our credit union as we have run out of options. We currently can not pay our bills, and we have been robbed of any alternative vacation plans as we have absolutely no intention of traveling with Amtrak ever! Thieves and Liars! read more

Amtrak is a fantastic way to travel as long as you don't have to ride their buses. I went from Emeryville, CA to Union Station in Los Angeles recently and had to ride the Amtrak bus from Emeryville to Stockton and from Bakersfield to Union Station. These buses are terrible! They suck! The seats are small, the legroom is short, all around bad. No plugs, no Wifi. You may as well ride the big grey dog - Greyhound which has plugs and Wifi. And God forbid if you end up sitting next to a "large" person, you will be on the edge of your seat the whole trip!! Terrible experience! read more

Amtrak has a monopoly on passenger trains. But this isn't exactly a market companies are fighting to be a part of. Fortunately, Amtrak wears the crown with enough pride to continue making riding the train an enjoyable experience in 2016 and beyond. I can't fault the obvious criticisms leveled against them. The train is too slow. Too many stops. No direct train route from SF to the East Bay. Delays. But when taken as a whole, the negatives are just part of, well, riding on a train. Personally, I really enjoy the Amtrak experience. On my occasional weekday rides to the big city there is plenty of room to stretch out and move around, the view of farmland and the delta is wonderful and the wifi is always solid, allowing me some quality work time without worrying about the road. The occasional noisy or obnoxious passenger can easily be shut out with some quality headphones. read more

Ugh. The "Capitol Corridor" Amtrak reminds me of Cold-War-Era, Eastern-Block, 3rd Class passenger trains, like the dark, grubby ones depicted in depressing 1960's spy films. The railroad tracks for the Capitol Corridor route are just plain dangerous. As anyone with eyes can see (even in front of the stations, where you'd think Amtrak would have at least done some cosmetic maintenance), Amtrak has obviously neglected the "Maintenance Of Way" (aka: MOW, or track work). Far too many railroad spikes that are used to secure the huge steel rails to the wooden ties that have visibly worked their way up from their original position by several inches, no longer having a tight grip on the wobbly rails supporting each massive train roaring by. Amtrak's ancient, creosote-oozing 19th Century-style wood ties should be replaced with modern, 21st Century cement ties, and replace the old loose, rusty spikes with state-of-the-art rail clamps. You take your life in your hands just walking down a passenger car isle while under way. The Third-World track work causes the Amtrak cars to lurch dangerously without warning while running over old, uneven wooden-tie bound tracks with their loose spikes. The depressing, spartan interiors of the railroad cars are plastic and uncomfortable. As I found out, the seat trays are sticky with dirt, making airline trays seem sterile by comparison. The seats themselves are worn-out, butt-bustingly flat and hard. Think of a bench in the the crummiest bus station you've ever seen, and you get the picture. Some passengers treat the seats like it's their living room. It's all-too-common to see passengers hog empty seats with their backpacks or by putting dirty feet up on the empty facing seat. The train staff does little to remedy this anti-social behavior. As for the hygiene of some of the more pungent fellow riders, the less said about them, the better. It's hard to imagine Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint (of "North by North West" fame) enjoying a Martini in a 1st Class Lounge on this train - 'cuz, see, their is no lounge. There's only a galley staffed by one person working a microwave oven and selling junk food. In an Amtrak incident last Thanksgiving, our train hit a farm truck at a crossing, causing a four-hour delay (BTW, there are dozens of uncontrolled farm road R.R. crossings on the route). Luckily, there were no injuries, or we'd still be stuck there with the ensuing NTSB investigation. Gone forever are the glory days of the luxury "Super Chief" (along with that Politically "Incorrect" name for that classic Streamliner passenger train). What a way to run a railroad. read more

Riding The San Joaquin route is a risk to your health during COVID!! They don't even do the MINIMUM required by public health mandates. The conductor today wore ONLY a face shield--no mask over her face and nose--which permits her breath to be freely shared throughout the train. A convenient announcement reminds passengers to wear a mask except when eating or drinking. But it's not enforced unless you ask a conductor to do so. WHAT?!! I boarded to find a woman at a table looking at her cell phone with no mask at all. Two other passengers boarded with no mask and a third was sleeping with no mask. The conductor reported back to me that "they were eating." Not when I walked by NOR when the two boarded the train. Surely it would be possible to monitor when people board plus a reminder at that point to "keep the mask on." As it is, if you sit with a bag of peanuts on your lap, you can ride the entire route with no mask. I was desperate and have had to take the train, but no more!! read more

Worst train company! I booked a trip with Amtrak 5 months ago Portland/Seattle/ Vancouver. 2 weeks prior to board the train I received an email that the train from Seattle to Vancouver won't run on 8/20 due to construction issues. Then the supervisor gave me an option to reschedule the train ride for either 8/19 or 8/20. I chose 8/19. Therefore, I was forced to make phone calls to rebook my accommodation accordingly. A couple of days ago I called back Amtrak from Portland to check the status of that ride and I was told that everything was running as scheduled in case I would not be notified. Therefore, this morning at 5h30 AM I called Amtrak and spoke to Miguel to check if the train was on time and was told that the train ride was cancelled by two Amtrak employees. I almost fainted since I wanted to ride that piece of ride by train since it is scenic. I started rebooking my accommodation accordingly and when I called back Amtrak to find out what was the reason, I was told by the guest relations Yashida that the train ride was indeed never cancelled. Again I almost fainted. I got wrong information from Amtrak employees. Amtrak refused to compensate me for Seattle accommodation by refunding me the cost of that trip or giving me another free trip. This will be my last trip with Amtrak. I won't recommend that train transportation to no one unless you have time to waste. read more

Would be a decent way to go except for the passenger lottery. Today's jackpot was a group of railroad employees who filed into the last car on the train and, one of whom, an apparent regular here, treated the car as if it was his own living room. Unable to zip it for even the briefest of moments, and unable to turn the volume of his voice down below 11, he went back and forth between holding marathon conversations on his cellphone and with the few passengers around him unwilling or afraid to pick up and try their luck in a different car. Conductor couldn't do anything other than apologize. No code of conduct expected or enforced on the train. The previous jackpot was a foursome of aggressive beer swilling gang members. I think my Amtrak days are over and I'm just going to rent a car next time. read more

Terrible experience. Train was delayed 24 hours with no heads up of notification. They did not send out an email or text message when they knew the train was delayed. So everyone drove all of the way to the Milwaukee station and had to get rides back or stay in MKE. I advise other means of travel I'd possible. read more

Seats are comfortable, plenty of leg room. Staff is pleasant and helpful, but that is where the good ends. This trip from Sacramento to Seattle was the worst ever. Yes, there was bad weather and delays from that are expected, but what was supposed to be a 20 hour ride turned into 30+. Stupid delay after delay that could be avoided. Waiting for 4 hours for another train and a handful of passengers was very irritating,( planes don't wait hours for more passengers who are delayed) being made to wait while cargo trains get the right of way is wrong. Not having access to good food, unless you are in a sleeper car is also just wrong. Some people can't eat microwaved, crap frozen food and shouldn't have to. People took off their masks and no one said anything. I was in the business car ,lower level and a porter came around only twice in 30 hours, so people took advantage and took off masks. No respect during the supposed "quiet time ", rules were not enforced. Bathrooms were not maintained very well and toilet paper wasn't on a holder in any of them, so everyone handled them. Yes, you can wash your hands but it's still gross. No sanitizing between passengers, not even the headrest covers which were not changed out, great way to get head lice. Don't think anything could make me want to travel by train again unless some changes are made. read more

My Amtrak experience On December 22nd me and my husband headed out to the Orlando Amtrak station ( destination Miami). I had my son dropped us off in my car at 12:30pm because our train was scheduled to leave at 1:30pm. Once we arrive the train station reeked of must and urine. of course I am inside the building. I approach the window and a young man stated to me that I was all set after I showed him my E ticket. He also stated that all I needed to do was to have a seat and wait for them to call my section to board the sleeper carts. So me and my husband proceeded to seat in the disability seating area due to my atrial fibrillation ( heart condition) After waiting several minutes an announcement came on stated that the train was 2 hours late and would not be arriving until 2:30pm. Cool no problem. Then one of your fellow employee's walked over to me and my husband and stated to me and my husband that due to the crowdedness in coach that we should check our luggage. I than let her know that we our in the sleeper cart and there was not a need to check our luggage. She than rolled her eyes and waked off ( I do not want to say this was traveling while black. I will just say that this was traveling while dealing with ignorant people) Yes the employee was a white American. After waiting for about n20 minutes I thought about how small the sleeper cart were so me and my husband took the advice of the Amtrak employee and check our luggage At about 2:45 the announcement came on for the passage to repots to there assigned gated. Crazy thing coach was called first then the sleeper carts was called to go to the Letter (E) so me and my husband went to the assigned letter and waited. As the train slowly pulled up than he it. Coach was asked to walked down to letter (l) and board the train. Now me and my husband was still standing at letter(E) and no one came over to check our tickets ( yes coach was still boarding) at this point my husband walks off the under path and was then stopped and redirected back to the letter and also told that someone would come and check our tickets we just needed to wait. So that is was we did we waited and guess what happen the train left without us on it ( yup ) I than immediately call the 1800 number and spoke to a lovely lady who stated to me after explaining to her what happen she herself stated that something like that should have never happen. And to talked to the person at the window they are suppose to accommodate me and my husband well that could not happen because the window was closed. I also explained that to her. Now all while I am talking to her my husband was talking to an female employee whom tried to lie and say she came over to check our tickets. I than cut her off and said if you check our ticket since this is your area why are we not on that train then/ How can I be standing her taking to you if you check my ticket. She than changed her story and stated well how come you did not walk up to the train when everyone else was walking to the front. I than stated to her while pointing to a male employee and said that man told my husband to get back on the under path and someone would be over here to check our tickets and those people that walked to the front was coach were are in the sleeper cart and again was told to go to the letter (E) and someone would come check our tickets. The lady than walked of after say call the 1800 number they will help you ( really) . So I am still on the phone with the Amtrak employee frustrated as all get out. Mined you my luggage is headed to Miami on a train. So I than had to call my son to come back and bring me my car because now me and my husband have to race to get to the Miami train station before 9pm. The nice lady refunded me my point but that is not enough. I endured expenses because of this ordeal Tolls $40.00. food 25.00. parking at valet $112.00 ( for 2 hotels) carnival parking $154.00 ( for 1 week) Gas $72.00 and my sons uber $54.00 which is a total of $457.00 Please note that this was money I intended to use on my trip and these expenses would never have happen if your employees did their jobs correctly. (South bound) While waiting on my son the north bound train also came and the same announcement came on all sleeper cart go to letter (E) and everyone was there and guess what happen? Someone came and check their tickets . How is it that the north bound people can do their jobs correctly? but the south bound cannot. Never again Never again read more

This is an outrage. I was on an Amtrak from Sacramento to Emeryville and the engine broke down. After 30 minutes of waiting they fixed it. But then the Amtrak in front of us hit a Semi-Truck. Today I got on Amtrak and Jim an attendant asked me if I had a ticket I expressed I needed to purchase one. He seemed upset and replied well your supposed to buy one inside, I stated I just got off work and didn't have time to purchase before hand, also explaining I only carry cash. Furthermore he state you do this all the time, trying to get a free ride. I stated wait sir I'm not interested in a feee ride I'd like you to charge me accordingly. The price is $7.5 I've purchased tickets all the time on and off the train and they've all been $7.5. Now he begins to yell and say you just want a free ride so pay me $11. I'm not sure if he thought I was someone else but whoever he was referring to was not I and I felt very disrespected and discriminated upon based on my ethnicity! Outrageously disgusting! read more

If you need to be on time, just don't even entertain the idea. And I don't mean a few minutes or a few hours I mean 1 - 2 days...

On all four trips, I have never experienced such rudeness, unprofessional, insensitive staff and attendants... customer relations does not care about the feedback you provided even if it will help their business. Not only did I experience horrible attitude and services or lack of, but several disabled individuals dealt with the same and we get the same feedback from customer relations, being "well, sorry to hear this, we will document it."... end of story, they do nothing to show their empathy for your unpleasant experience. Also, the train has always been dirty, even looked like vomit caked onto the carpet and the bathrooms are disgusting. When attendants are asked for assistance, they give attitude and walk away, hard to watch - especially for those with disabilities. Amtrak, you need to get your #### together. There are many options for transportation, one of these days you are going to be out of business for the reasons mentioned above and for others that you have ignored. Here's a tip, hire people that are actually nice and friendly rather than rude and condescending. More so, do something about the complaints that are made rather than just say "I'm sorry". Really?!! My business colleagues and myself are done with your horrible services and lack of concern. Not to mention, the train is never on time... My first trip was six hours delayed landing me in a city very late at night with no transportation to get to my next destination, again - nothing was done. read more

Having traveled the world on various long and short train transport services, Amtrak by far has the worse customer service, reliability of its arrival and destination and even their internet train location schedule of estimated arrival time, off by 2 hours. Amtrak's status app has never once shown me an up to date status on their app's status report. I spend hours going to that station only to find out the train is delayed or cancelled and upon arriving. So then I sit there and look at all the delays on the board and type them in to the app to see the status and all the trains (showing delayed on the board) say they are on time. My 5:27 train was cancelled on the board at the train station yesterday at 5:00. At 6:00 the status on the app still said on time. They cancelled all trains yesterday due to weather and there was absolutely no way to get to customer service on the phone. I left my phone on hold for 1.5 hrs before giving up. I get that a lot of people were calling but why not have an option online to modify the trip. It is a usual option that you can use anytime but no one can use it in the case of hundreds of cancelled trains? It specifically says I have to call them for that even though they clearly don't have the resources to take the calls. read more

I love taking Amtrak from Davis to SF but, they really need to rethink the time they alot when they pick-up in the afternoon and evening to head back to Emeryville. Traffic is gridlock getting to the bridge due to all of the construction activity,vehicles rushing/blocking the bus onramp and too many vehicles riding the bridge. We have had so many near misses and missed trains too many times. Do you realize that many of us have a 1+ hour commute home once we get on the train and have to wait an additional 50 mins for the next train if the driver cannot get us there in time for our scheduled train? They should pick up from their stops 50-60 mins (not 40) to allow adequate time to get through the heavy traffic and to deal with the additional time needed when the driver has to pick up at another spot for another driver or during baseball season which causes additional traffic delays. Either that or you need have your trains wait for more than 5 mins if a driver calls in that we are running behind. Remember your customer base Monday-Friday includes mostly commuters who spend a lot of time commuting and we would appreciate this consideration. Thanks. read more
