We are first time travelers by train. Our train arrived to a cold, rainy night in Salt Lake City Union Station. The walk from the train to the station was long especially for those who have difficulty walking. There wasn't a cart to pick people up but one to pick up luggage. There seems to be a lack of concern from the conductor on the train who was ready to get going. Our attendant was very helpful with my husband who got very sick on the train. Personally, train travel might not be good for older folks like us. Perhaps those who travel a lot might have a better idea how to navigate railing. read more

Every single interaction at this specific amtrak station has been plagued by OVER 4 hours of delays. Every single trip involving this station. Amtrak does not compensate customers for delays (unless you count getting some free snacks, which they're required by law to provide since they hold you captive during multi-hour delays). The trains... seriously disgusting; there was menstrual blood on my "bed" in my sleeper cabin. This was just the worst/most recent item. There are MANY disturbing maintenance issues on these California Zephyr trains. I could go on and on about the experiences and failures on Amtrak trains, but I can summerize it all as follows; Amtrak doesn't care about quality, service, cleanliness, or adhering to its commitments. Amtrak also doesn't cars about its customers. If it did, it would provide more than $0.99 snack items for delaying peoples trips by 10.5 hours! The only thing Amtrak cares about as a business, is taking your money and never giving it back when it fails to meet commitments. read more

Salt Lake City should be embarrassed by its cramped, ugly, dilapidated station. Especially when the unused and once majestic Rio Grand station is two blocks away. At the transit hub it goes to they even built a plain but decent station except it is not actually close to where the Amtrak stops so it sits locked during the wee hours Amtrak operates. While the urine soaked slop hole of a station greets and sends off visitors. Maybe people would care more if the only trains didn't arrive at 11:05 PM and 3:05 AM. That is when they actually arrive on time, which is never. All this to say that it is a shame because once you are on the train the ride in either direction is quite scenic and pleasant. If not more of a land cruise than a mode of travel you can set your watch to. read more

Did you know Amtrak ships? I forgot who it was that turned me on to it but what a deal! We shipped 209lbs of stuff from Champaign, IL to Salt Lake City for only $153! When shipping, everything must be in cardboard boxes or luggage and nothing can exceed 50lbs. This was fine, we just focused on keeping the boxes relatively small. When it came time to pick up the boxes is when the headaches started. There is exactly one train that comes through Salt Lake City and it doesn't arrive till almost midnight. The train station is only open from 10pm to 5am and you only get 48 hours to get your things. When the first part of my shipment arrived, I decided to get it right away. Let me tell you this was a mistake! This area is NOT the kind of area a single female can wander around lost at midnight and feel safe. Its just a block from "homeless junkie" hangout. Most of them are harmless but as a woman, avoid it! The next time I decided to wait until right at 10pm the next night and the vibe was much different. People are still waiting for their train and you feel much safer. Also, the landscape is confusing here. The Amtrak station is on the far south side and its a tiny isolated building. read more

I have taken the California Zephyr from the Bay Area a few times, either to Denver or all the way to Chicago. That has also included a stop in Osceola Iowa so that my folks could pick me up for a visit. The first day's travel takes you up the Sierra Nevada mountains (and under the Sugar Bowl Chair Lift) and past Reno/Sparks just before nightfall. And upon waking up in the early morning, I am here at this Salt Lake City Amtrak Station. It's small and sadly separated from the old historic Union Pacific and Rio Grande Depots. 2 stars is only due to the 5 stars service our cabin attendant, Marquita provided. This was the 1st time we traveled any distance via train. We departed from Emeryville, CA and destination was scheduled to arrive at 3AM in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our true arrival time will be 8 hours later. This is after several mechanical breakdowns. Throughout the trip, in car 633, our room #15 experienced many stinkbomb incidents. My 11 year old described it best when he said "It seems like every 15 minutes, someone blows off a stinkbomb in here". Really a remarkably uncomfortable method of transportation that we had a hard time enjoying. Marquita did provide excellent service with a very positive attitude. After this 1st and only experience, Amtrak travel definitely not recommended, especially room 15 of car 633 unless, you enjoy the smell of sewage. Blechht... read more

Its a train station. What can I say. Busy, helpful staff. Pretty clean. Crowed, a very small station and happy that I was there when the weather was nice. Most everyone needed to wait outside and if it had been cold that would have not been good. The station (in SLC) was hard to find. I was from out of town and grateful the Uber driver knew how to get there as it was down a lot of dark back alley type roads. Not good access at all. Signage was poor. Bottom line is that it's functional, but not much beyond that. read more

Since the only train that comes through here anymore is the California Zephyr, and both directions only stop here in the wee hours, this station keeps the odd vampire hours of 10 pm to 5 am. Show up prior to 10 pm and you may have issues as the Intermodal station next door has very limited non-Greyhound seating space (meant for Frontline and the city light rail) and the security might decide to be dicks about you being in there without a Tickie since SLC is one of those places where War On The Homeless is more important than basic human consideration or customer service. Anyway. If you're walking up in the dark it's a little confusing as the Amtrak is in its own little building on the opposite side of the light rail platform from the Intermodal / Greyhound station. Once you're on the right side of the light rail platform the sign is highly visible but from the other side you can't see it at all. "Station" itself kinda reminded me of military temporary field buildings but it's actually an OK basic place to wait with restrooms and water as well as plenty of seats. Staff was really on the ball. I passed through here twice. Once at 3am in the morning when i arrived and once at 3:30am when I left 4 days later. Outside, there were 4-5 taxi cabs waiting around the circle when the Amtrak California Zephyr came through. Getting off the train, you could either go into the station or bear left towards the circle. The station itself is small but well kept. There was a bathroom setup which helped. Kind of felt off the beaten path but so are most Train Stations these days. I was worried about it being pretty much empty this time of the night, but there seemed to be around 20-30 people plus the attendants and the train support people. It was good. I would not feel bad about using it again sometime in the future. read more

For us travellers, there are plenty of small and large (enough space for a large backpack if the contents of your pack are unloaded) lockers which charge by the hour. There is no information here for those new to the city. Fortunately, the station is part of a transit hub and the traveller can easily get from here to the airport via public bus. The Temple and the two historic train stations are all located w/i walking distance and the neighborhood seemed safe at night. read more

I took the train from salt lake city, ut. To charolston,w.v . The ride there was ok i only had to take a bus for about 50miles , The problem came when I first arrived at the train station. 1.They insulted me by asking if i should be traveling alone-you see i have a service animal 2.They comp me a free room with all my meals free so that meant dinner and breakfast. (For insulting me) By the time the train pulled into the station it was past 11ay night so i had to go to bed hungry. 3.They promised me a red cab every stop i needed to switch !!trains which i didn't get and the one time i yell at them i was yelled at to shut up or wanted to catch my train id better run now you tell me if you run with bad lag surgery on hand. This station can be hard to find, it is in a portable building at the central hub by the light rail line, not in the greyhound station. You do not need to check in at the desk if you have the etickets, they rude girl behind the desk will tell you this if you did not realize it. You can get straight on the train by having the conductor scan your ticket. If you have a sleeper the walk is pretty far. You can park for free in the lot directly across from the station, we left a 10 year old suv there for 3 days and nothing happened to it. The employees, greyhound, and trax/frontrunner customers all park there. You do not need a pass to park there. It is first come first serve and only is full on nights when the club on the corner has concerts, so check ahead. Use the amtrak app, the trains run late a lot and the app is pretty accurate. The staff on the California Zepher were all pretty nice. We had a family room and a roomette. The family room is spacious (relatively), it was clean, but the train is older so there were scuffs and worn marks everywhere. The family room comes with a narrow full size bed, pretty comfortable about 6 feet long with the option to overflow onto one of the kid beds for another few feet for tall people. The bunk above is a very narrow twin and another narrower kid bed. The kid beds are short but doable for a shorter adult, kinda like sleeping on short couch. The roomettes have one narrow twin and one even narrower twin above, the above bunks in all rooms are quite close to the ceiling. The family room has places to stand, change clothes, stack stuff, but the roomettes do not, you will have to change laying down or in the changing/shower rooms. The view is better on the second level, family rooms are only available on the lower level. A porter helps you change your room from day to night and makes your dinner reservations, lunch and breakfast are first come first serve. The food is very very good and included when you get a sleeper, I reccomend the steak it was fantastic. Stay away from the chicken apple sausage at breakfast it is pretty gross though. The dining staff is good but not super fast, luckily you are in no hurry. My son fell asleep at dinner so they brought me mine in my room, very nice. The sleeping is possible, but on the 6 train you are closer to the engine in the sleeper so the train horn is more audible. It is similar to sleeping in an motorhome as it heads down the freeway, you are in a moderately comfortable bed but it is rocking and creaking and bumpy. Your porter will wake you for your stop. The barhrooms are similar to airplane barhrooms but a little bigger, I didnt use the shower. There is a comforable observation deck through the dining car for the good views. Remember to tip you free meal as if you were paying for it and to tip your porter. This is not the best way to travel if timing is important. The trains run hours late pretty regularly and we spoke to a man that was running 12 hours late on his trip from one line in California to the Zepher. Our train was ontime on the way out (the 5) and 2 hours late on the way in (the 6). I felt like the passengers in the sleeper section were polite and courteous. We had fun. It wasnt a bad way to travel. Drinking your own alcohol is allowed in sleepers only, you can buy drinks at the snack bar or at dinner too. Keep in mind amtrak stations are usually in the bad neighborhoods, the one in slc is a really bad spot bu Utah standards, but we felt safe for the short trip from the car to the train, I would not wanna hang out for hours here though. read more

I left a tote bag on a California Zephyr train. Calling the Amtrak general number was not at all helpful. I'll spare you the amazing details of that. I determined when the train was in Salt Lake City and called the local number. A gentleman named Russ was so polite, helpful, and professional. He was as helpful as could be. At first I heard the bag was not found. Russ called me back and had the bag in hand. He arranged for it to be taken to a station where a friend can pick it up. I am very impressed with Russ and the crew on that train who easily could have dismissed my concern but instead they went out of their way to be helpful. Thank you a million! read more

This is not a review of the station as much as the personnel on the California Zephyr. We rode from Martinez to Denver and, a week later, returned. Both times the Amtrak personnel and customers were remarkably rude in Salt Lake City. Keep in mind that it was the middle of the night (3am one way and 1:30am the other trip). Yet employees talked as if it's noon, volume raised, thoughtlessly waking passengers. It created an atmosphere that welcomed the boarding passengers to do the same. Amtrak needs to review its protocols and train its personnel better. It was awful. Won't travel on an overnight train again, I think. read more

The place is alright. It's totally fine for what it's supposed to be. But there is one employee there who is very rude. My friends had never traveled on Amtrak before and every instruction she gave was so vague that they didn't understand, and when they would ask for clarification, she would act dramatic and sigh and generally behave like a bitch. A man came in, with a ticket, well dressed and clean cut, except his face was covered in blood. He walked up and before he could say anything, she said, "I can't talk to you until you go wash your face. Go wash your face." He tried to ask for help, saying he had just been jumped after parking his car, (not surprising, given the neighbourhood), and she proceeded to interrupt him and tell him she wasn't interested. If you ever wondered What it would be like to ride a Soviet-era Russian State Railways passenger train of about 60 years ago,boy do I have an Amtrak train waiting for you! Recently,I took Amtrak's California Zephyr from Emeryville California,wich is principal stop for the San Francisco Bay Area,to Chicago,as a round trip. Perhaps with the pleasure of meeting friendly and chatty fellow passengers on both legs of the trip,the Amtrak stations in both Emeryville and Chicago were the ONLY OTHER highlights of the trip,since BOTH stations were clean and pleasant and staffed with good-natured Amtrak station agents! However,most of the on-board train conductors and car attendants were RUDE and Despotic,compared to trips that I have taken across the country going way back to 1983! Since this train was practically empty,I considered myself very lucky when I had THREE young handsome male passengers join me for companionship in the lounge car after we pulled out of Sacramento,Ca. They rode with me all the way to Chicago,and one of them waited with me in Beautiful Chicago Union Station until it was time for us to go to our respective trains. We agreed to stay in touch and swapped contact info. Meanwhile,back on the train before reaching Chicago,we were all subject to having our conversations frequently interrupted by BLARING announcements warning about NOT WEARING A FACEMASK,LIGHTING A CIGARETTE ,ILLEGAL NARCOTICS,or BUYING ALCOHOL for a MINOR,or you could be TOSSED OFF THE TRAIN at the NEXT STOP! All throughout the trip,we were treated like TWO YEAR OLDS by POMPOUS AND SNOTTY Train Crews,who GLARED AT US almost every time that they walked the aisle! I am sure that at least a few of them were wondering what my much younger male "seat buddies" saw in this 71 year old guy,and why did they like hanging out with him? I will note that,so far,I can not recall anyone ever wanting to chat with me on an airplane flight,but my ONLY TWO favorite airlines,Southwest and Alaska,treat their passengers FAR BETTER than Amtrak! Amtrak still has some nice Train Conductors,mostly in the Western States,however about 99% of the female Conductors and Car Attendants are a bunch of man-hating KARENS,who have NO SENSE of humor...or HUMANITY! On the return leg of the trip; while we had a 45minute layover in Salt Lake City,I checked out the nearby UTA light rail station,and fantasied about ditching my "Soviet-era" train,and noticed that,with just a simple across-the-platform free transfer at nearby Temple Square,I would be at SLC Airport in no time at all. As I headed back to my coach,one of the "Karens" screamed at me to PUT YOUR MASK ON! I yelled back: YOU SHOULD BE WORKING FREIGHT TRAINS! She then ordered me off the train,but this KAREN did me a favor: I got to know Salt Lake City for the FIRST TIME and LOVED it! Southwest cheerfully changed my ticket from Oakland to the next flight out from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas McCarran airport. I gave this two stars for the actual location and building, NOT for Amtrak. I have ridden Amtrak several times (probably 30-40 times in varying parts of the country) and have never had a bad experience. As long as you are not in a rush when traveling the long-distance routes (trains are almost always on time on the Northeast Corridor whereas they could be anywhere from 15 mins to a couple of hours behind in the middle of the country), then the experience will be worth it. And even if the train is running slow, the views are still worth it....Anyway, I caught the Zephyr from SLC at 3 am. I arrived early because I had to drop my rental car, so I was there at 6 pm. The area is a dump and it is not safe to just hang around, especially since the Amtrak station doesn't open until 10 pm. There is a "tent city" for all of the homeless just a block away and while I was there, I witnessed a man walking around and yelling with a hypodermic needle in his hand. So after waiting for about 20 minutes and realizing how unsafe it was and how miserable it would be killing 9 hours in the area, I booked a hotel room downtown, before catching an Uber back in time for the train. Do not arrive earlier than necessary if you are taking a train from SLC, especially if the station building is not open. read more

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE SERVICE! First of all I was warned of the 7 hour layover, I figured it wasn't that bad. The layover turned into A NINE HOUR WAIT! Reason? They said no one came to work. Second, just an in general dirty place. Bathrooms smelled like pot, employee Joe, was putting luggage on the buss with a lit cigarette in his mouth. Floors were slick with dust. Lastly, employee Jessica would not explain to us the reason for our delay. She also threatened several people to move them to back of line for complaining about the wait and not knowing why they're waiting. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND MY WORST ENEMY TO RIDE WITH GREYHOUND. read more

In March 2016, due to my flight being cancelled with blizzard conditions, I opted for a seat on Amtrak. I did not have experience riding a train since childhood. I do say that the Amtrak building in Salt Lake City, UT at night, although it does not appear to have a well lighted signage outside, I did walk to the building from the Express Shuttle and as I walked toward what I thought was the station I was correct, and the signage on the door is clearly stated. The representative behind the glass panels, Grant, was very helpful, professional, courteous, concise and answered every question I had and was gracious about 'all my questions'. I do say that although technology and newer trains are in place, the train experience is not so far from 'yesteryear', as the train still stops at stations, still has separate cars linked together, still has conductors, with their uniform "pretty much" the uniform as year gone by, which, in a way, was nostalgic. My AMTRAK experience was one that the service was consistent and their staff, this ride, on the California Zephyr, was professional, and courteous. The people onboard are diverse, and a few were patient with me, as, yes, I asked questions, and even "got lost a few times". A couple of people even gave me tours of the train, as they were seasoned train riders. Of course, I thanked each of them, and apologized when I got lost. I pleasantly and unexpectedly saw parts of Colorado Americana that I would not have seen via airplane, ice fishermen, wild deer and wild rabbit in the pure snow, beautiful Colorado mountains, lovely homes and more. I truly enjoyed it, along with the enjoyment of meeting other people and conversing with them, some of them, literally from all over the U.S. and diverse lifestyles as well! I actually look forward to being on AMTRAK in the future. An AMTRAK ride is an experience and for those desiring a land traveling experience, perhaps you may wish to include an AMTRAK ride! read more
