Stopped by to satisfy nighttime sweet tooth cravings and glad that we did! Amy's Donuts offers a large variety of specialty donuts (and some very cutely decorated), ranging from the classics like glazed and cake donuts to maple bacon, Nutella crumb, and Cookie Monster donuts. We decided to go with some classic options - strawberry frosted, old fashioned glazed, blueberry cake donut, and a cinnamon glaze twist donut. The strawberry frosting was sweet but not too overwhelming, and the cinnamon glaze twist had a nice balance of the spice of cinnamon and the sweetness of the glaze. Since we got 4 (and the twist was pretty big), we decided to have 2 that evening and save the others for a morning breakfast treat; the cake donuts did well overnight and did not get stale. Comparing the different doughs, the strawberry and cinnamon glaze twist dough had a fluffier and lighter consistency (which I preferred) than the cake and old fashioned donuts which were denser, sweeter, and more filling. For COVID precautions, there are separate entrance and exit doors to create one way flow and markings to space 6 feet apart (it was not crowded at all when we went in the evening). Fun little donut shop to check out. Tucson mural is cute. Love the local touch. I also appreciate that they provide field trip visits from Tucson kids! Awesome. Follow their Facebook to see adorable pics of their field trips. The inside of the building leaves a little to be desired. Not sure if something else will be going in? Seating maybe? The drive through has no posted menu, you have to know what you want or just ask for an assorted dozen. Hard to know what you want when they have such a vast selection. We asked for a menu and they gave us a weird tattered thick copy of what seemed to be their recipe book? I am not in love with the donuts, really sweet. All the same glazed base with different toppings. They are fun though! And still good. As I end my days in Tucson my sweet coworker ordered and paid for specific donuts for us to enjoy this morning. She ordered them and paid for them yesterday 11/12/19. She picked them because she knows what I like and wanted to go above and beyond. She let them know the time she would be there. When she arrived they were not ready and was told it would be another hour. She gets up at 3am everyday to prep for her family and get to work. I've never been more excited for an opening than when Amy's came to town. Donuts make up the base and peak of my food pyramid. There was so much social media hype on Facebook and Yelp, I had to actively stop myself from thinking about donuts the week prior to their grand opening. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with this shop. I've come by 3 times, and the first two times the line was out the door. Since I don't like crowded spaces or waiting in line, I've pushed it off twice until the queue was finally manageable today, almost a month after their opening. Their strength is their creative and varied toppings. It looked like they had close to a hundred lovely sounding flavors like Nutella fluff, homer Simpson, creme brulee, and chunky monkey. Any favorite chocolate candy bar you might have is probably a topping on one of their donuts. Other than that, the presentation was very sloppy. Icing was loose as a goose and leaked all over my hands and chin. The dough had a decent bite was run of the mill in terms or spongy texture and taste. Also very expensive, about $2 per donut or $13ish including tax for a half dozen. I'm glad I tried it just to try it but I think I'll stick with Estrella donuts. read more

Man, Amy's donuts is really good! I mean reeealllly good! We've tried all of the classics and I'd say the chocolate frosting of the chocolate frosted leaves a bit to be desired, but every other flavor is dead on perfect, especially the maple frosted and the Bavarian cream. The glazed is perfect, the Samoa is a dream, powdered sugar and all of the filled donuts are so yum. The donut dough recipe itself is as perfect as it gets. I'm gonna call it four stars in hopes that they workshop that chocolate frosted flavor and - and this is a big AND- please work out your online ordering portals- the store never matches the website never matches Door Dash never matches any other delivery hub and it's such a drag. About 50% of the time I put an order together we end up just going in and picking it up because donuts we like aren't showing up for delivery, and about 20% of the time we just do something else because we aren't able to pick up. If this was a more straightforward process we'd probably order delivery donuts all the time! So maybe it's for the best??? Deeply adore this place, keep up the great work! read more

As you have seen, they have a lot of unique kind of doughnuts. The problem is that the actual doughnuts taste/flavor/texture is nothing special. In fact, I actually prefer some of the big chain doughnuts. They aren't bad, just nothing outstanding. On top of that, they are pricey. I got 3 doughnuts and a cola and it was over $12. Ordered online through DoorDash. Very happy with the DoorDash experience. When it comes to Amy's Donuts though I'm just not sold. I ordered online, so at least one donut that I ordered was substituted (perhaps two, but I haven't 'seen' the donuts in person before so maybe not but al least one definitely was). This was likely done because I ordered donuts at 7pm and so I really don't have an issue with the substitution. That's just a note (maybe don't order online?). Donuts arrived and the box that contained 6 donuts had 4 round donuts and 2 'bar' (what my family called long johns) donuts crammed into the box. I say crammed because this box can easily hold 4 rounds and 1 bar but once you try to cram the other bar in there I ended up with 1 bar donut broken in half (and lemon filling spilling all over) and one bar stuck to the top of the box (the chocolate is mostly on the top of the box now). This leaves an impression with me because when you're charging 2-ish dollars per donut the presentation matters. If this were a gas station, whatever. But these are "premium" donuts and when they arrive they really should be presented well. I would note: this is not a delivery issue. This is someone put too many donuts that clearly didn't fit well into one box instead of spacing them out in another box. I love donuts. So I picked several different types of things to try. Here is my experience: the cream filling and the lemon filling in the two bars were both really good (you can scrape it off the box, sort of). I thought the lemon filling was the perfect amount of lemon taste and really liked that filling. Lemon filled anything is normally my favorite. The four other donuts were 'fancy' donuts. Here is what I honestly believe: the top of the donut (the goodies they make the donuts pretty with) is good. Nutella top, yum. Oreos and peanut butter, yum (although a weird combination I wouldn't necessarily endorse, but it was fun for a try). There was one with almonds and caramel and something, again, yum. But the donut itself.... the dough is not my favorite. In fact, it seemed a little 'under baked' and therefore was a bit chewy, a bit heavy, the donut dough was a bit pale. So this has left me very torn. The goodies on top are kind of 'hiding' the fact that the donut itself is not great. In fact, I would argue the best part was the toppings or fillings but the vessel which is supposed to be the star (the donut!) is really not great. On the positive: we ordered a set of old fashioned donuts (as singles) that were actually a bit better than the donut. They're not the best old fashioned we've ever sampled. They're also kind of closer to average, but they're definitely a bit better than the donuts. I love supporting local business and realize that you often have to spend a little bit more to support those businesses. Happy to do that! But when it comes to donuts then you must make sure the presentation is still good (can't have broken donuts and donuts stuck to the boxing because you crammed them in) and you must make sure the donut itself tastes great. I am not certain that I would try Amy's out again -- just because I'm not convinced the toppings were the star (not the donut) and there are better, more affordable options around town. I'd definitely buy a vat of the lemon filling though.... read more

Tucson really needed a special doughnut place like this. There are so many choices, free samples drinks, but no seats inside. I bought 4 doughnuts, two blueberry fritters, one strawberry shortcake and one strawberry filled glazed. The items are fresh and inventive. There's even a drive thru and they're open 24 hours. Who needs seats, I say! The only thing that I would change would be to switch out styrofoam boxes for paper boxes with a logo on it, the presentation is better, they keep better in the fridge they're better for the environment and it's free advertising. As I walked in there were about 10 people in line but several friendly people behind the counter. I had to let some go in front of me because there are so many choices. Seems to be Tucson's answer to Portland's Voodoo Donuts. The pricing as explained on the video monitors is a little confusing - we ended up going for an assortment of half-dozen gut bombs for $11 (plus tax). My wife is a connoisseur of fine cake donuts - she had a plain one so she could evaluate the donut flavor. She judged it Excellent! I ordered several of the candy-bar covered yeast donuts - an excellent donut with candy bar pieces on top. Didn't see any donut artistry like you would at Voodoo, and none of the high-end ingredients and flavors you see at Blue Star in Portland, but they make a damn good donut. Be prepared for a line - ours stretched to the door just before noon on a Sunday, but it moves fairly quickly with 3 people taking orders when we were there. read more
