I would most definitely book Judy again! And there was a beautiful young woman getting an updo in the chair next to me and it was magnificent! I was impressed how gorgeous it was so they definitely do great work here! They have an online appointment portal that seemed easy to use and I'll try it next time - but I was hesitant initially bc the prices seemed quite exorbitant and wanted to be sure I wasn't mistaken so I sent an inquire instead. Turns out, yes, their prices are shocking imo - for just a tiny trim of my hair and bangs (less than an inch off) it was $70!! And that's not including the tip! No shampooing or styling even! So that was quite jarring for me - but the prices seem to pretty standard in this part of Monrovia. Be prepared for sticker shock lol. But to their credit, the shop is in an excellent location, is clean, modern, and chic and the stylists do great work. However, this whole appointment and the end result was too unpleasant for me to ignore. Tony was the one who did my perm and Tony was unprofessional. Please avoid having Tony do your hair. To start, Tony showed up to the appointment 15 minutes late (and his coworker was telling him his 11 o'clock was there) and then seemed very disinterested in trying to get the service started. Then, after briefly glancing at my reference photo and finding his own- Tony told me that my hair needed to go shorter and proceeded to give the most careless haircut ever. Total hack job. During the perm, Tony rolled each hair extremely tight that he even had to pause to massage his hands. The overly tight rolls bruised my scalp and Tony was so careless with placing the spacers between the rollers and scalp that I actually was tearing up because the pain was so unbearable. And even though I mentioned that it hurt Tony lowkey just ignored it?? To top it off- Tony ran out of rollers HALFWAY throughout the process so I had to wait with the crazy tight rollers for around 30 minutes (I am not exaggerating). And Tony's not the one that informed me about it- Tony's nice coworkers were the ones that continued to check in and keep me updated. Also, the whole salon had 3 digital perms going on (including mine) and they kept grabbing the rollers coming off from another client and directly using it on my hair. I don't know if that's normal but I thought every tool was supposed to be disinfected prior to using it on another client. If the digital perm turned out the way I wanted- I would not be so upset but the curls were MUCH MUCH tighter than I asked for. But mostly the experience sucked. And it sucks because I had come here previously for a regular perm and had such a great experience that I trusted the salon for another appointment. I will not be visiting this salon again. (And clearly I am very upset towards TONY for screwing up my hair and being a total incompetent asshole throughout the whole appointment. He was luckily free and immediately took me in an hour later. He explained options on how he can safely fix my color and ultimately did a good job. This last visit meant more to me than he probably knows. I had just been laid off from my job and had an important interview the next day. I felt overwhelmed and stressed and knew I needed a haircut to feel even a little more confident going into it. Even though Leo was fully booked for days, he offered to see me two and a half hours after his normal closing time. After a long day of work, he still welcomed me with kindness, patience, and warmth and took incredible care of me without ever making me feel rushed or like an inconvenience. I'm pretty picky about my hair, especially because I'm originally from Japan and I have a different hairstyle expectation that you usually cannot get at a U.S. hair salon. That's been said, if you have a typical Asian guy with hair traits like mine (thick & straight), I highly recommend you give it a try at this hidden gem in Monrovia. I cut my hair every 3-4 weeks, and I get a perm once a 3-4 months at Yumi's place. Yes, you read it right, I get a perm. I know getting men's perm is not common in the U.S, but the truth is it's such an undervalued thing here because permed hair is incredibly easy to manage, which is usually not the case for a typical thick straight Asian guy hair. Additionally, Yumi's place has very low covid risk as it's an individually owned salon, and the only person you meet in person is Yumi. She is very careful about maintaining covid sanitization and I feel safe each time I go there.
