I'm a happy loyal customer since June 2019. It's been almost 2.5 years since I moved to LA from SF. I have to say that the quality of hair cut & perm you get here is amazing and consistent every single time which I feel very grateful for. I'm pretty picky about my hair, especially because I'm originally from Japan and I have a different hairstyle expectation that you usually cannot get at a U.S. hair salon. That's been said, if you have a typical Asian guy with hair traits like mine (thick & straight), I highly recommend you give it a try at this hidden gem in Monrovia. I cut my hair every 3-4 weeks, and I get a perm once a 3-4 months at Yumi's place. Yes, you read it right, I get a perm. I know getting men's perm is not common in the U.S, but the truth is it's such an undervalued thing here because permed hair is incredibly easy to manage, which is usually not the case for a typical thick straight Asian guy hair. Additionally, Yumi's place has very low covid risk as it's an individually owned salon, and the only person you meet in person is Yumi. She is very careful about maintaining covid sanitization and I feel safe each time I go there. I've been searching a long time for a stylist who is able to cut and tame my frizzy, wavy, thick hair. And I can finally say that I don't have to look anymore because I found Yumi! This was my first visit to Yumi after reading all the wonderful reviews. Before my visit, my hair was a very blunt straight cut. My ends were very dry and my bangs were overgrown. Yumi gave me a wonderful long layered cut as well as very fluffy fun bangs with some accent in the front layers of my hair. I love my haircut and it looks very cute when I curl/wave it (I have very fine straight hair). Yumi is also incredibly kind and lovely to speak to as well. Guys!! If you need a good haircut, please come to Yumi! First thing, privacy. She works in a single room by herself so it's not noisy at all!! This is an update review for Yumi and her newest location in Monrovia. I absolutely love her private studio she has now! I always thought it was so awkward when there are other people getting their hair done next to me but now she has a private studio and it is very top notch. There's also a whole lot of parking since it's in a shopping plaza. I can always trust Yumi to give me a haircut that suits me and she is extremely careful in making sure she knows what you want. Today I told Yumi to create a style in whatever way she wanted and I am extremely happy with my haircut! Yumi gave me the cutest short haircut I have ever had! I have been going to Yumi-san for like 8 years. My mom is also a dedicated customer and goes to her every month for a haircut and sometimes for color or perm. The way Yumi-san cuts hair is wonderful because when it grows out, it grows out beautifully. It does not get awkwardly uneven where you have to get it fixed. I have received a cut, perm, and color from her several different times. I have been more than satisfied every time. I show her a picture of what I want, and she gives me exactly that. When I ask her her opinion, she gives it to me and it is really helpful, so that I do not end up with weird looking hair that does not match me. She is an expert at hair including what looks good and what does not look good based on face shape, ethnicity, hair thickness, etc. She is fun to talk to and I she is the one I go to when I want to get my hair done! read more

I wish I could give her double, triple, quadruple, etc of the highest rating on yelp because Yumi is the most professional hairstylist I've ever had in my 20 years. I'm very picky about my thick, wavy hair and I have particular Asian hairstyles that I like to match, but because of my hair type very few hairstylists are capable to work out good results. Yumi not only matches what I want, but she's THE only one I've met who understands design (which I've NEVER met any other hairstylist do); therefore providing advice for how/why my haircut would match with my face shape. She's definitely a professional with a knowledge that many "hairstylists" lack and has the skills to back it up. Plus she genuinely cares for her clients' happiness as well.
