Really difficult to review a place like this. I don't live there but I have a dear friend who was…read morerecently placed there by his doctor and daughter. When I first heard he was there I was immeasurably sad. I thought this would be the beginning of the end for him. He's fiercely independent and has lived in the home he and his wife built for more than 50 years. He loves his walks and our beautiful neighborhood. However - several months in I am now very grateful he is there. He has some pretty significant senility issues and forgets what he told you ten minutes ago. But his cognition has greatly improved since being here. I think having people around him and folks to talk with has made all the difference. He's so much more lucid, it's amazing. The facility itself is not bad, as these places go. There is the odor of urine, as you might expect, but it's not pungent - I get the impression they work hard on keeping it clean so smell is not an issue. They have a lovely, quite large bird cage with lots of finches. It's fun to watch them and brings a sense of lighthearted life to the place. There's also a beautiful fish tank for residents to enjoy. There's an outdoor area with a walkway around a lovely grass yard and benches all around, as well as tables with chairs and umbrellas. Apparently they have barbecues out there fairly regularly in nice weather. Last time I stopped by to take him to lunch, he was listening to a live violin concert. It was really lovely. I don't know the deeper details because this is my friend and not a family member. But he is quite happy there and I'm so glad his daughter chose this place. Thumbs up!

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW A LOVED ON TO BE SENT HERE. My mother went for 10 days of…read morerespite, 5 days paid by hospice and 5 days self pay. It was chaos when we went there. Open boxes of supplies were sitting all over - in the lobby, the hallway, at the nurses station. We had a 2:00 appointment, but we waited 2 hours to talk to a nurse. Meanwhile one patient's "device" became dislodged, and he was shouting from the other end of the corridor that he was in pain. In the smoking area outside someone fell out of their wheelchair and other patients were going up and down the hall shouting to have someone come and pick her up. There was no non-smoking outside area for my sun loving mother to go to. Hospice provided her medications for the entire stay at the beginning of the program. The hospice nurse went over the medications and when to administer them. I filled out paperwork with the admissions office and the business office making it clear that she would be staying 10 days, and what level of care she needed. While I was there, I noticed their monthly charges on the wall, which were $3000 more per month than friends pay for good quality care in other facilities. On the 4th day, I got a call that my mother had fallen in the bathroom and had a bump on her head and a small cut on her elbow. I was later told that the facility staff picked her up, removed the jacket she had been wearing so it could be laundered, and put her to bed without cleaning the cut. Hospice personnel dressed the wound and replaced the bloody sheets on the bed. The jacket then disappeared for 4 days. On the 6th day, I got a call asking if she was staying there or going home, when she was going home and where she was going. I don't know what happened to the paperwork I had filled out. At some point her medications, which were all in order and paid for, disappeared. They ordered new medications from their own pharmacy and sent us a bill for them. And they did not get the prescriptions right. They did not give her the prescribed diuretic and when she had trouble breathing they dosed her with morphine and put her to bed. She spent a great deal of her time there drugged and in bed, when she had been quite active before. When it was time for her to come home they could not find her wheelchair, which had been clearly marked with her name, or the oxygen concentrator the equipment provider had delivered. They put her in a wheelchair that they told the transportation person he had to bring back. I told him and them that we would get their wheelchair back to them when they returned ours. She was almost comatose the first two days she was home and fortunately does not remember much of the experience. The wound on her arm was weeping and the bandage was dirty. It was a different dressing than the hospice nurse had put on. She would not have survived if the hospice aide had not stopped by every evening on her own time, gotten her out of bed, cleaned her up, eaten dinner with her and put her to bed.

It is a shame you cannot give negative stars. My husband was admitted to this Genesis facility…read moreafter suffering from a stroke. At the same time my mother was in hospice for metastatic breast cancer. I had to divide my time between both facilities. Half the time there was no one at the front desk to allow me entrance to the facility. We would have to wait for someone to notice us standing at the door. On one occasion I was there early enough to actually see the "physical therapist " in his room. She placed a weight in his right hand and told him to lift it. He was paralyzed on the right side so she just removed the weight and said ok for today. The next day I was told that he had fallen out of bed during the night and found the next morning. The head nurse told me that they placed a mat next to the bed in case he fell out again. There were no rails on his bed and they could not explain why rails were not supplied. After I filed a second complaint about the lack of care I received a call about 5:00 am to be told he was being transferred to a hospital because he was unresponsive. They could not tell me which hospital he was being taken to. After multiple phone calls I located him at Lovelace downtown. When I arrived he was receiving CPR. He passed away at 9:11 am after several attempts at resuscitation. I was told that he was heavily sedated that might have been a contributing factor. I was not given an option of nursing homes when he was released from his initial hospitalization, but Genesis' reputation is terrible. Please don't allow your loved one face such irresponsible treatment.

I had to wait long times for help to get to and from bathroom. Doctor and PT said that I was to have help getting into and out of wheelchair. Even when they came, they only watched, didn't help. At one time I was told to just do it myself - not to bother them. The worst was the private Care Conference scheduled for a conference room. The previous person overstayed, was not told she had to leave, and so my meeting was held in the hallway - most likely against HIPAA. Private information was openly revealed where others could hear. And, little if any suggestions were valid for when I was to go home. One suggestion was just to sell my house. Food was ok, but usually cold. Twice when I ordered ala carte, I got the standard meal. Breakfast was ok, but often not what I ordered. A number of times a nurse tech woke me from sound sleep to ask how I was doing. I arrived on Tuesday after four days in bed in the hospital. I asked for a shower - told not today, but tomorrow. Asked every day and finally got a shower on Friday. Had to "beg" to get a shower twice a week. Staff allowed roommate to have loud company one evening to nearly midnight. I had to ask for a bill. I messaged, emailed, and called. I finally got one that showed I was 120 days past due. I had not even been at Manzano Del Sol 120 ago when I got the bill -- and my insurance paid the first 20 days. Also - if I pay by credit card they will charge me over $100 extra. I would suggest trying another facility for your rehab if you have a choice.
