I feel compelled to share our latest alarming experience with Anchorstrong. An employee, Joe Essy, threatened us via email, stating that he might file false reports against us unless we removed our honest Yelp reviews. He also suggested that he might leave negative reviews for a kind handyman we've worked with and file false reports against him, despite never having used his services. We also asked Joe to provide the permit he claimed to obtain for our project, as required by our contract. Several weeks have passed with no response, leading us to believe he never secured it. Rosie (Office Manager) and Steve (owner) were copied on our email, and we forwarded Joe's threatening email to them as well, but they have not responded. I also have serious concerns that Joe may have created multiple accounts to post fake reviews, including negative ones for others that reflect the threats he made in his email to us, as well as positive ones for his own business and employer. Yelp has removed several reviews based on these issues, and I have documented evidence to support my claims. Believe it or not, Joe has done more shady things, which we've documented. To keep this more concise, I'm highlighting just these examples but there are many more. In my opinion, Joe's behavior is not only beyond unprofessional but also seems unhinged to me. Who engages in such extreme, dishonest tactics against their customers simply because they left honest feedback? Providing feedback is our right as customers and a key purpose of Yelp. Multiple individuals who interacted with Joe raised serious concerns about his questionable honesty, erratic temperament, and disrespectful behavior. The emails I shared from Costco are just a few examples of this (see photos I posted in this review). Instead of simply addressing valid feedback, Joe resorts to intimidation tactics. His actions made me feel unsafe enough to install a security camera, especially since Joe said he lost the key to our front door. It's deeply disturbing that Joe has threatened to unfairly target us and this handyman--who has nothing to do with this situation and doesn't even know Joe--in what seems to be retaliation for our honest reviews. This handyman is genuinely kind, hardworking, and excellent at his job. He does not deserve this treatment at all. Since Joe mentioned he provides handyman services himself, Joe's threats also raise serious concerns about a conflict of interest. Based on our experience, it seems Joe is willing to go to very extreme lengths, including unethical tactics, to silence honest reviews, suggesting serious issues. His intimidating behavior has been completely unjustified and, in my opinion, it's shameful. Anchorstrong has failed to meet their contractual obligations, leaving us with substantial damages and financial losses, and refusing to refund us or work with us toward a fair resolution. After we paid them over $34K, we've faced intimidation, which we have proof of, instead of accountability. As paying customers, it's disheartening to experience such unethical treatment. If you work with them, be prepared for the same treatment. Also, ensure all permits are actually secured. I didn't want to write this update because this company isn't worth anyone's time, but their intimidation has led me to warn others and I hope it helps someone make a more informed decision. We've never encountered such appalling treatment from a vendor before. To Anchorstrong: We have every right to post honest reviews. Stop trying to intimidate us. While we've accepted that you won't provide the fair refund we are owed after taking our money, we simply want to be left alone--and for others to be left alone as well. The photos of Joe's shoddy work and the damages he caused speak for themselves. We face significant expenses to fix these issues, in addition to the $34K+ we already paid you and the other losses we incurred due to your failure to meet your contractual obligations. This review is tied to my wife Bianca's review, and together we feel compelled to share our dreadful experience with AnchorStrong. I don't usually leave negative reviews, but our experience with this company, especially with their contractor Joe, was so abysmal that I feel obligated to warn others. If you're considering hiring them, do yourself a favor and read this review first and the other reviews from 1-4 stars. From my experience and reading other reviews, there seems to be a pattern of substandard work and communication that warrants looking elsewhere for your contracting needs. We hired AnchorStrong for a fairly straightforward renovation project, which included: - Kitchen demo and installation of new cabinets and countertops - Installing new appliances and fixtures - Minor repairs and painting throughout our condo - Various other small tasks, like stabilizing our washer/dryer and installing screen doors The total cost was $35,200, with an estimated timeline of 4-6 weeks. Simple enough, right? Wrong. What was supposed to be a quick job turned into a 10-week nightmare. We paid AnchorStrong and Joe $34,390, but the images included in this review show the state of the work when we exited the contract early--believing Joe couldn't deliver a professional finish. In my opinion, Joe displayed a level of incompetence that made the process unnecessarily difficult. He often blamed external factors--particularly Costco and their delivery service DCC--for issues that were clearly within his control. For example, Joe cut a hole in our cabinets after asking DCC to install the microwave, causing the fan to break due to debris. He also blamed scratches on our flooring on DCC, even though they were likely caused by drywall debris he left behind and the lack of protective material used on our floors. Additionally, he blamed a crack in our new cabinet on DCC, even though it was located far away from the microwave. At the time, we believed Joe and submitted a damage claim with Costco. However, more concerning behavior came to light. Joe attempted to alter how the installer issued the settlement check for the damage claim, requesting it be issued directly to him without our consent. Costco reached out to us because such requests are often not legitimate. This only deepened our concerns about Joe's integrity and trustworthiness. After 10 weeks of delays and subpar work, we returned from our vacation to find our condo still incomplete. Despite Joe's assurances that the project would be finished, little progress had been made. When confronted, Joe offered a long list of excuses, but the condition of the condo looked more like a high school shop class project gone wrong. When we finally brought in other contractors for quotes, Joe's behavior turned bizarre. He showed up unannounced during our meetings with other contractors, barging into rooms uninvited and sloshing paint on our floors. He even told my wife not to speak to the other contractors--truly unprofessional and, in my opinion, downright creepy. Joe and AnchorStrong offered us a "reimbursement for any losses" if we took down our negative reviews, which, in my opinion, only proves they know their reputation is at stake. After nearly 2 weeks of back and forth, nothing has been resolved--they claim to be reaching out to Costco but haven't even asked us for contact information. We requested an itemized breakdown of the contract to compare the contracted work with what was actually delivered, but they haven't acknowledged our request. My advice? Stay far away from these clowns. They don't deserve your time, money, or trust. If you do work with them, show up often, unannounced, and be ready to walk away the moment you see red flags. I was fortunate enough to qualify for the California earthquake rebate for both embracing my home. They provided a list of qualified companies that could perform the work. I called two of them and got proposals and I chose Anchorstrong Construction. It was interesting how the two companies that bid approached the estimating visit. One company looked underneath the house gave me a quick price and said it was easy to do blah blah blah. Anchorstrong's representative went under the house took photographs and spent quite a bit of time understanding the current situation at my home. From that point on it was easy sailing I hired them I worked with Eric with the manager and Rosie who are both fantastic and project was done very quickly. Our little 1920 Craftsman bungalow had needed foundation work for a while. Floor sinking in 2 or 3 places (the worst was 3-4 inches) and perimeter concrete had cracks/holes in a few spots; just to mention the main issues. We were finally in a place financially where we could get some of the work done, so we did a ton of research, read countless reviews on various platforms and contacted the top 5 companies in our area to get some quotes. Anchorstrong was one of them. And after meeting with all the companies and getting quotes from them, we decided to trust Anchorstrong with this (very important) job. We hired them partly because their quote was very competitive, but mostly because the prompt, thorough, kind and communication, as well as the extensive knowledge of our contact person (Eric) made us feel very taken care of. He took the time to reassure us and answer every single question patiently. That changed the minute we signed the contract. I could go on forever, describing in great detail the reasons and situations that left us feeling extremely disappointed and constantly frustrated, but for the sake of the readers, I will condense and summarize. Eric remained our contact person through the duration of the job, and he flat out lied to us. Repeatedly. So much so that at one point we refused to communicate via phone as we wanted everything he said in writing. Just to give an example: we flew back from a trip because the work was scheduled to start the following morning (after being rescheduled a couple of times already), and reached out to Eric at 7pm to confirm since we hadn't heard anything. His response: "Oh, I was just about to reach out to you..." Then he said another job was taking longer; that he could send another team, but really wanted his best foreman for our job, and he would only be available in a couple of days. The foreman never showed up for that first round. The whole time it was just the same 2 worker guys (for this big job). Very disorganized too. The first day my husband had to lend them a shovel because the one they had was too long to work in our crawl space. They also asked to use some pavers we had on our side porch to lift the house against. They didn't seem to have a plan. We refused. Not the right materials or way to do it. Another day hubby had to run to Home Depot because they didn't have the materials for what needed to happen. COMPLETELY UNPREPARED. It felt like we had hired a couple of guys from the Home Depot parking lot, NOT having a professional and reputable company working on our home. The person giving the workers orders/instructions was Eric, and he had never even seen the work site. Never been to our house. We contacted Eric's boss, Steve, to try and get things moving in the right direction. We were told he was the owner of the company (even though another name is listed on all public records), and he too was very nice. But didn't seem to care at all that we were having issues because he (admittedly) never read any the emails we cc'd him on (said he saw them, but didn't open them). If it were my company, I would want to read/hear what my clients have to say... They did a decent job on the retrofit since that's the part they got a permit for (and would be inspected), but even that was missing a few components that were listed in the contract. My husband noticed it when he went under the house to check out their work and called them on it. We also had them do 4 underpins, which we "think" were done fairly well. But no way to verify once the concrete had been poured... They saved the floor leveling part for last (which was our MAIN concern and the reason we contacted them), and basically added a short girder beam and then tried to jack the house against mud. Got about ¼ inch of lift and it sunk right back down. Then they came out and said they were done with the (whole) job. We gave them each a hefty tip and I even baked them cookies to say thank you. And then my husband crawled under the house again... He is in the building/construction business and does a lot of his own work, so he knew exactly what needed to happen... The job was NOT DONE. At all. We could tell even from inside the house as our bedroom door frame was still super crooked and the door still didn't close. Basically no change on that aspect. And several other things listed on the contract were either not done or half-done. Finally, after making major waves and insisting the job be completed properly, a foreman showed up. On the very last day of the 2nd round. He did get things moving; and they were able to lift the house (only in the worst spot) about an inch - not the 2-3 they had mentioned. My husband had to crawl under the house a total of 3 times. That last day he saw there were still 3 loose posts that were supposed to be replaced, some holes/cracks in foundation wall, and a bunch of dirt piled up against wood in many areas (will create rot) -- (SEE PICS FOR REST) read more

Letting me know exactly what Anchorstrong was proposing. We modified a couple of things and by the end of the conversation I felt very comfortable with Anchorstrong's transparency. The materials were delivered the day before but the materials foreman came about 20 minutes later than Eric said he would (he told me traffic was bad, will give them the benefit of the doubt). (READ MY WIFE'S (Magda, below) REVIEW AND ANCHORSTRONG'S REPLY FIRST FOR MORE CLARITY) Since Anchorstrong / Steve (the "owner") clearly tried to discredit the review my wife Magda Molina wrote on 4/24/23, I thought I'd chime in myself. Even though I was the one doing the communication, she and I are a team and went through this experience together. She took the time to write OUR review and every word is true. She did leave a lot of stuff out though... Clearly Steve took some time to write a reply to our review. We only wish he had taken half as much time to read all the emails I cc'd him on explaining how the work was not being done, or not being done properly. When I talked to him on the phone he said "I saw the emails come through but didn't read them." That really does sounds like a "customer-focused company" doesn't it...? We completely understood that the job needed to be pushed back because of rain (twice), which is why it was never brought that up in our review. But we got rescheduled 3-4 more times (NOT rain related) and lied to about it. They gave the excuse of their best foreman needing to be there (before any work started), but he didn't show up until the very last day. When they didn't complete the job on the first round (NOWHERE near completion), they took days to return our messages and said the guys were now on another job and we would have to wait. We always knew we wouldn't get the house up 3-4 inches. Of course we weren't expecting our floors to be completely leveled like "a brand new structure", and never said anything to that effect. We were actually worried about damage to our (fully) tiled bathroom near the sinking point, but their inspector who came over to evaluate the scope of the work was the one who told us we could get 3-4 inches. And Eric confirmed it in our initial phone conversation. What we also knew (I am in the construction business) is that things must be done at least to minimum code. After the first week and the guys said they were "all done", I went under the house and realized they had set the piers on mud! NOT dug a hole, put gravel in, poured concrete and then set the piers. They just jacked the piers into the mud. The house didn't go up, the piers went DOWN. So I (literally) begged them to redo it. Properly. Anchorstrong says they recommended a brand new foundation? That's another lie. They never recommended replacing the foundation. Neither did any of the 4 other companies we received quotes from. So clearly our home didn't need it. Even though it's over 100 years old. There was also a ton of work that was in the contract that was NOT DONE: existing posts still touching earth, cracks not strapped, blocking missing, Simpson ties missing. Also they had piled dirt up past the foundation so that it was covering the Sill plate! They used no epoxy in the cracks even though it was in the contract, and as Magda stated, 3 posts were not replaced, although I did ask for, and received a discount for those thanks to Rosa. During this whole process, I sent multiple pictures and videos and CC'd Steve & Rosa with Eric our contact. Steve said himself he never read them. Or saw the pictures/videos. Of course I don't want Anchorstrong back at our house. Who would want guys back that while talking to their boss (from under the house, in Spanish, which we could clearly hear and understand) called me names and disparaged my house. All this could've been avoided had Eric done what he said he'd do: communicate with the workers how to do the job properly. Eric and I, over several clear conversations, had decided that to avoid damage to the interior tile they would jack the house slowly, incrementally. Over a period of a few days. That didn't happen. Eric assured me that the girder system would be to code. There's still one post they installed (girder system) that is set on a piece of wood they found in my yard! Yeah, that's to code... Most days the (reluctant) workers knocked off at noon. The first day they knocked off at 11:30AM then hung out and drank beer on our parking strip in front of the house... til we got home around 4PM! Omar, the "Foreman" who finally showed on the very last day did great. And his kids would know because he brought them with him... his poor daughter stayed in the cab of his truck all day. That was the last day the workers were at our house: Feb. 20th. The inspector came on March 20th. I was initially attracted to Anchorstrong because of the strong reputation they have. The price came in right around the middle of the five others I got. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. Eric was awesome he was always there to answer any questions I had. Anchor Strong made participating in the California Earthquake Brace and Bolt program easy. I have never done anything like this before so the entire process was new to me. I reached out to multiple contractors for estimates through the EBB website. One never got back to me and when I followed up with them, they wanted to charge me 100 dollars to come out to give me an estimate. Red flag! Rosie from Anchorstrong reached out to me the same day that I submitted the request. She scheduled an appointment for me to have a technician come out to inspect and provide a quote for the work that needed to be done. Rosie also informed me of the process, what would be need, and typical timelines for a project like this when participating in the program. When the technician from Anchorstrong came out, he was on time, he took the required pictures, and noted details required by the program. While I waited for the estimate to be generated from Anchorstrong, two days later I had the third company come out to give me an estimate. The person that came out from this company didn't even go under the house!? The quote was also ridiculously high compared to what I've seen others being quoted online. When I got my quote from Anchorstrong, it was detailed in the scope of work and extremely competitive based off of what I was seeing. They recommended additional services that I may need however I didn't go with those during that time. They did not pressure me or make me feel as if my job was not important. Rosie's responsiveness, the professionalism of the team, the online reviews, and the price made this an easy choice for me. Anchorstrong took care of getting the permits, the work done well ahead of time, and the final inspection a breeze. They also uploaded all necessary pre and post pictures to the website so I didn't have to worry about that. They were on time, every time, which made everything go smoothly. I've used Anchorstrong for the retrofit of my previous house in Glendale, and used them again for my new (1926) house in Pasadena. Anchorstrong's team worked with me to bolt my house after I was accepted for the State's EBB program. They were great! I filled out an on-line form for the EBB program and appointed them as my contractor and they took care of almost everything else from there! I had to call EBB once for an extension but only because there were delays dealing with the City of LA Dept of Bldg and Safety. Once all the ducks were in a row, they scheduled the actual work and were at my house early and finished quickly.
