We were in town for a wedding. School was not in session so the area was quiet. Lovely grounds and an easy walk into town for morning breakfast, coffee, ice cream or even dinner. This is a review for Samuel's, a reopened restaurant in the Andover Inn. Since their renovation and reopening, they aren't taking reservations so went early before 7pm and got a table immediately. The menu is standard with daily specials. Had the Pork Belly starter and the Crab Cake entree, both of which were excellent! On our table we also order the burger and turkey sandwich, both excellent as well. I was very seduced to try the steak special, but we were making steaks at home the next day so will have to come back to try it here. The server was very knowledgeable about the bar selections for beers and wine and also about the menu and specials. We got here early, at 5:30, to beat the 7pm crowd and already the parking was filling up. It was the week with the below zero temps, so even the short walk was brisk. If you find yourself looking for a place north of Boston consider Andover Inn. Quaint beautiful a stones through from down town shops and breakfast places. The Inn is supper clean the bed was very comfy and very quiet. The only draw back is no food in August, restaurant closed July 31. read more

This is a beautiful Inn and the building/location is perfect and historic in the heart of Phillips Academy. I live in this neighborhood and have been going to Samuel's Restaraunt and the Inn itself for functions and dinners for many years (including my Wedding Reception in the 80's). We went here today for Easter Brunch and the venue itself had been remodeled since the pandemic and it looked fantastic. That being said, the food was so-so. The seafood bar had decent shrimp but the clams on the half shell were gritty and my daughter almost broke a tooth. They had advertised oysters as being included (in the $75.00 prix fixe) but there weren't any. The donuts and pastries looked stale and unappealing and the creme brulee french toast looked like a sugary, fatty mess. The crabmeat risotto was outstanding and the neverending Applewood bacon was an A+++. I think the biggest disappointment was the quality of the meat was abysmal. I looked at the ham & the ribeye and it was so fatty and tough looking that I gave it a hard pass. I gave the lamb a chance but it was stringy and fatty and wished I could bring it home for my dogs but that wouldn't have been polite. I'm guessing they're buying lower grade meats and trying to present them as better as they are due to inflation, and I feel for them but--yuck! I had given up meat for lent and this awful selection made it easy to imagine sticking with that program for a while longer. The dessert bar and the lovely and attentive staff were fantastic which is why this rating isn't lower. If you want to go to a landmark of a place with spectacular ambiance and pay a lot for unappealing food this is a top choice. It was a beautiful Easter Sunday and it's nice to be able to walk there from our house so I don't regret going to this brunch but temper your expectations if think you're going to get excellent food. read more

My son goes to school there. When they reopened, they were always out of entries but I thought it was just a rocky opening. Now, whenever I try to make a reservation, the restaurant is never open because they are booking private events, weddings, etc. . . . so if they have a restaurant that is never open . . . why do they have a restaurant at all? Have eaten here twice and it was excellent, but the third time was NOT a charm. They were out of half the entrees. It was explained they had a large banquet there earlier, and some of the food they served us was clearly left over from that event, such as the short rib and polenta. A steak ordered medium rare was like shoe leather. The crab cake ordered to replace the shoe leather steak was a mushy, nasty, mayonnaise mess. Truly awful, insulting food at those prices. They should have comped the bill but we just wanted leave. Be better, Samuels. Be much, much better. read more

Great restaurant in the Andover Inn. Food was spectacular and the service was unmatched! We started the meal with the bread service which was excellent. It came with warm mini baguettes made in-house and 3 dips. One of them was an olive tapenade and it was the best I've ever had! The burgers and lobster roll were amazing as well. I felt very fahnceyyy eating at this restaurant. I initially thought that the portions would be small especially for the price. I ordered the ribs, brussel sprouts, and spinach. The portions were just right. Almost like the chef peaked out in the dining area, spotted me and said, "yeah.... this will be enough for her." Everything was cooked to perfection. Sprouts were perfectly seasoned and cooked with the exact texture that I liked. Spinach was same. And ribs were tender and full of flavor. I don't know which stole the show: ribs or sprouts. My cousin ordered the apple crisp dessert and let me try some. It was good. Everything was fresh. The server was very knowledgeable and all of her suggestions were spot on for my cousins concerning wine to food choices. An overall pleasant and flavor filled experience. read more

Pros: Hotel was very nice. Hotel was very clean. Front desk staff was very nice and helpful. Complimentary coffee/tea bar in the lobby was hot and tasty. Cons: The smell in the lobby is terrible after a fish dinner in Samuel's or a 1st floor conference room. The inventory control on food and other restaurant items is sparse. They were out of many menu items. They are out of several teas, sides for menu items and a few specials. The business center which is just a computer on the garden level is in need of a tune up. Was unable to print a boarding pass for JetBlue from this pc. The printer was also flashing low toner. Great News!!!! This is a 31 room ( I think) hotel and is situated on the campus of the prestigious Philips Andover Academy. The grounds are so nice anytime of the year and the hotel looks so pretty with the architectural lighting outside. The rooms are rather current, nice linens, nice and soft towels. They have Directv in each room and a very clean and crisp picture hosting a great selection on channels. We felt very safe at this hotel and plan to host a brunch here in a few months. It is the choice hotel in this area in my opinion. read more

The food was fresh and delicious (chicken piccata, Cesar salad, pasta Bolognese, garlic bread, artisanal cheese display) and the room set up was attractive. Jodi made everything easy. I cannot explain how perfect the Andover Inn is for any occasion. There is two function rooms that you can have a intimate bridal shower / dinner rehearsal in. The bedrooms have Modern New England charm & are perfect for a weekend trip. All staff at the Inn are very professional. Each room ( there is also suites!) is perfectly clean, tidy, and modern. Samuel's (restaurant located the Inn) is a combination of high end food, beautiful New England Charm, and excellent service. Samuels at the Andover Inn is a go -to for any romantic or professional dining experience. The wine list is to die for & the food should be featured on a cooking show. I am getting married at the Andover Inn this summer, and I cannot wait for my family and friends to experience the food from Samuel's. read more

This small hotel is far and away the nicest place to stay in the area. Located on beautiful tPhillips Academy campus, the inn has comfortable well appointed rooms. One warning, the bathrooms are small with showers not tubs but perfect for short stays. The staff is exceptional, always helpful, courteous and genuinely concerned about the guests. Right across the road is the superlative Addison Museum, which has to be one of the best small museums in the country -- hard to believe it's a high school's collection of art. Have stayed here many times and am always delighted. The Inn's very noisy restaurant Samuel's is probably worth skipping as there are many better places to eat in Andover, but if you don't mind the excruciatingly slow service and below average foid, it is convenient ; it must have different management than the Inn. read more
