I would never bring my shoes or handbags anywhere else. Have been coming here for 15+ years. They always fix my handbags, usually straps are too long. I buy high end shoes and would not trust fixing them in any other place. I don't live nearby and have asked Gary and Angel to fix my items while I wait and mostly they were able to do it for me. Balenciaga referred me to Andre No. 1 Shoe Design and I am thrilled! One of my hand-wrapped handles had disintegrated and needed to be replaced completely. Andre replaced both handles and matched the leather to my bag perfectly - no small feat considering my bag is emerald green. It looks like it's brand new! Plus, instead of charging me to recondition the leather, they sold me the potion they use for reconditioning so that I can clean and maintain this bag and my other Balenciaga bag as well. THE BEST! Such a great place for all your shoe repairs, stretching and even cleaning!! I had a couple of beautiful new high heels stretched out. And an old favourite pair of wedges that had a hole in them stitched up like new and they even re-inforced for no extra charge a few other areas where holes were developing - they looked brand new! And i had a pair of suede wedges cleaned and brought back to original condition. They were also so nice to not charge me for a boot sole to be glued back on. They are really popular and you can see why! So just be prepared to be without the shoes for a few days to a week. But it will be totally worth the wait! read more

Not your typical local "shoemaker" kind of place. These folks are cobblers and practice the long lost art with precision. These are artists who take pride in their work. I am always fascinated by all the devices,leathers,hardware and paints they implement. It is remarkable, really. I've been to all the other places in town that profess to do this kind of work: Pasquali's, Arturos...and they all pale in comparison. I have many vintage shoes and bring Gary and his crew some tough assignments and they have never failed me! Just looking at the other customer's shoes is a treat! Go there and see for yourself. Lots of celebrity clients doesn't mean that all is well at this shop. A simple boot-heel repair has come undone more than once. They guarantee all their work, supposedly, and as I was assured on the phone before coming back. I was unpleasantly surprised to hear that somehow the record of not one, but two different repairs on the same shoe mysteriously disappeared. All they had on record was a different shoe I had repaired ages ago, before I even bought the pair in question. Bottom line is, buyer beware. They repaired something, it came undone, repaired it again, it came undone again, and now are claiming they can't do anything about it unless I pay for a new repair. Had new heels done, taps, treds, new soles, leather cleaning, suede cleaning and strap making all on shoes, and everytime I was impressed with the work. I went here on a recommendation from the Alexander McQueen shop on Melrose. I run an online vintage store and sell high-end clothing and I have some celebrity clients, mostly musicians. I had a rare 1998 vintage Alexander McQueen supple lambskin leather skirt that was valued in the thousands. It was buttery soft but it smelled of perfume and had hanger marks.They assured me they could get (most of) the smell out and that it would look fine. I should have trusted my instincts, but they were recommended highly, so I left it there. It took about 10 days and after pre-paying them 60.00, I went to get it. It felt not-so-soft and it still smelled, so I let them try again. Long story short, after 3 tries and 1 month later, I went back to pick up, and it didn't smell, but it looked like they cooked it in boiling water. The leather felt like beef jerky, the hem was uneven, it had horrible stretch marks throughout, and had marks from hanging it over a roller ( so much for the hanger marks). They steamed the inside of it to death and RUINED the label (one of the important parts of designer vintage resale) to where the label went from white to blue-black, the writing smeared and illegible. The inside of the leather was no longer black but GREEN, and some of the green showed through to the outside of the skirt. I was shocked. They acted like "oh, well" and never even offered to refund the fee. I left the store not really knowing what to say because I was dumbfounded and I knew that if I started talking too much I'd probably start yelling. When I got home I regained my senses and called them and asked for a refund, which I shouldn't have even had to ask for. I guess the moral of this story is don't take clothes to a cobbler, and don't bring shoes to the cleaners. I'm out a lot of cash on this one and if I were more aggressive or had time to waste I'd demand they pay what the skirt was really worth, but not sure it's worth the agony or my time to get into a legal battle over. They should have told me that the leather would not be the same but they did not even allude to that. I put my total trust in them and they f*$cked me over. Don't be fooled by all the celebrity photos on the walls (most of them from the dark ages)...Maybe they do shoes well but don't leave your clothes there. I am completely disappointed and angry. If they'd just shown a little remorse or even said sorry I probably wouldn't have written this but after thinking it through I thought I should, and I'll certainly warn any of my clients about this place. I've been a client for about 2 years now and had 4 pairs of shoes and boots custom made (for medical reasons). Gary and his experienced craftsmen are the greatest! They won't let you go until your footwear feels perfect. Gary is very creative and the nicest, most patient and calm guy imaginable. The store is full of inspiring designs. Bring in your own drawing or photo and they will make it for you. For the first time in my life I can dance for hours without pain. They brought the fun back in my life! It's a miracle that such a store still exists and is obviously doing very well. Quality and personal service obviously pay off. It's not cheap. But well worth every dollar. read more

This review is long overdue. I LOVE Andre No. 1 Shoe Design. I have had a bag that I wanted recreated for 10 years. I went to one person who made the bag but not at all to specifications, it was too small, details were incorrect and was just an overall disappointment. After having gone to Andre's for repairs to shoes I finally brought my bag to them (a faux leather version which could no longer be repaired). My new leather bag is AMAZING!!! it is exactly what I have been trying to recreate for 10 years. They kept me in the loop through the whole process of making the pattern, picking the hardware and then production of the final bag. I truly can't say enough about them. Gary and Angel are great!
