Dr. Soss met me by appointment for an initial assessment. He is very professional, and gave me new insights (pun intended) into.my vision, and linked his findings to other aspects of my health. Mr. Soss responded to my reviews and refuses to admit that his employees act unprofessionally. Since he was not in the lobby when I arrived, he did not hear the unwelcome response when I arrived for the appoinment. He does not deserve more then one star because of the rude staff and also because he is a licensed physician who could have given me a prescription for my eye problem but instead told me to go buy over the counter eye drops. Thank God I ignored that. Over the counter eye drops have been recalled do to contatmination and people loosing their eyesight. I went to a competent eye doctor at stanford and got a prescription and solved the problem. And my comments were not racist. Other clinics hire latinos who do not act unprofessional or racist towards their patients. read more

My husband and I decided to have our annual eye exams, recently. My husband, a life-long eye glass wearer, and I, the daughter of a mother suffering from severe ophthalmic issues for decades, understand the value of finding an eye care professional who is all at once deeply knowledgeable, dedicated to their patients, attentive, and genuine. We were concerned about randomly finding such a person--as we have switched to a new coverage plan and did not have luck previously--but eventually swallowed our trepidation and booked an appointment with Dr. Soss. Preliminarily, during our first visit, we were unsure whether we had chosen well. Dr. Soss was clearly knowledgeable but we weren't sure he'd be the committed and personable professional we were looking for. As our joint appointments progressed, however, we were pleasantly surprised to see that he exhibited many of the characteristics we were looking for. Aside from being razor sharp in his field, we additionally found him to be sensitive and adaptable to our concerns, respectful in his communication, and extraordinarily thorough! We were impressed! As such, we dropped in to his office a couple days later so that I could ask follow up questions. He welcomed our impromptu visit, answered my questions, and thoughtfully told me that he would be in contact if further information became available. To my great surprise, he called the next day with an excellent solution to my problem! My husband and I feel extremely fortunate to have found what we were looking for in an optometrist in Dr. Soss! Dr. Soss absolutely insisted that my eyeglasses were not prismatic. He stated quite emphatically that they had a magnifier in the center of each lens. Soss can deny it, but that's exactly what he said. Additionally, he insisted, yes insisted, that glasses used for piano playing must be designed precisely for 24", even though I was very specific about my need for 18"; he completely ignored my request and dismissed my concern, even after I explained that 18" is because I have a physically disability. If he denies having insisted in 24" he's not telling the truth. Period. If he denies that my glasses were not prismatic he's not telling the truth. If he denies saying that there was a "magnifier" of some sort in the center of the lenses he's not telling the truth. I will not state the name of the doctor who referred to Soss as a quack, but it is absolutely true regardless of whether Soss believes it or not. I gave up trying to get his office to provide me with a proper invoice for insurance purposes. I was given a barely legible NCR copy that was not suitable for submission to my insurance company. I called his office twice, and each time I was assured that I would receive a proper invoice, although there was never any follow up. I stand by every comment I have made regarding Soss. His extraordinarily unprofessional response to my criticism is not at all surprising. I think the number of negative reviews regarding Soss speaks loud and clear. read more

I do not recommend this place, and I regret going there. Very arrogant and unnecessarily sarcastic doctor. He did not hesitate to comment and ridicule my physical appearance (commented on my eyebrows). Regarding covid safety measures: Did not check temperature, did not provide sanitizer (rather it is kept behind front desk so customers can not use it). What a joke this place is! It's like herding cats from the minute you walk in until you are rushed to the door. This office us like a throwback to the dark ages. And the door just keeps opening as way too many patients continue to come through the turnstiles as you wait in this small office. Too many people within such a small space during COVID! Reporting them onto San Mateo County Department of Public Health. This place is truly concerned with volume & $$$$ profit. To top it off the poor receptionist(s) are berated by the doctor with repetitive negative remarks and telling them to hurry up, hurry up! It has been six years since I've written my first review of this business, and Mr. Soss has contacted me twice regarding my post. It almost feels like a very uncomfortable, unwanted reunion. What Mr. Soss seems to overlook is the fact that my chief complaint is the quality of the very thing that brings in patients, customer service. I've called a handful of clinics whether for a primary care physician, dentist, or optometrist and before any appointment is confirmed, the receptionist is capable of verifying whether they accept my insurance or not. If Mr. Soss was able to provide me with this information during my first call to his practice, my review of his office would never exist. At the time, the receptionist told me "to just come on in" and we can go through the process. Poor advice. Mr. Soss has just now made it clearly apparent that his business is not or never was contracted with United Health. Thank you. For all you current holders of UH, now you know. It took 2.5 years after my visit for Mr. Soss to first contact me, which seems to have been motivated by his concern of his children's peers reading his reviews versus rectifying customer loyalty. Dr. Soss is an outstanding optometrist. He has been our family optometrist for many years and the care we have received has been excellent. He takes his time during appointments, never rushes and answers any questions or concerns. The office staff, Eileen and Elizabeth, are kind, helpful and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. One time, I called the office due to an issue with my vision. Dr. Soss was on the phone very quickly, arranged for an emergency appointment and was waiting for me at the office 15 minutes later. Dr. Soss made a discovery that potentially saved my life (or the quality of it) and it started with the loss of my glasses. Needing a new pair of glasses, I went to my optometrist, Andrew Soss. I was way overdue for my annual eye exam. Shame on me. After a friendly greeting by the front office staff, my wait was short. Dr. Soss performed my exam and discovered excessive pressure in one of my eyes due to hypertension. A couple of months prior was my annual physical. I told my primary care doctor that I thought that my blood pressure numbers were high, but they dismissed my concern. I shared this information with Dr. Soss. He ADVOCATED for me in a well composed email to my doctor regarding his discovery. Within 48 hours my primary care doctor was in a mission to get my pressure down. Before coming here, READ THE REVIEWS! A lot of them are from long-time established patients! I had been coming to Dr. Soss for 16 years. Dr. Soss is a skilled professional. However, his office staff is the face of his practice and because of this, he has lost 3 patients today. Each visit I would brush off the rude customer service from Eileen (who has been there since I've been going to him). It's kind of odd that he has so many negative reviews about her, yet he still keeps her around. I went in for my eye exam about 2 weeks ago, and paid extra for my contact lens exam. When he wrote out my contact lens prescription, he recommended a brand that did not carry my written base curve size. Of course, I didn't find out until I tried to purchase them online. When I called the front office, Eileen argued with me. I simply asked her to verify with the Doctor if he mistakenly wrote down the wrong brand or the wrong Base curve measurement. I was out of contacts and my prescription had changed so I needed them asap. After several phone calls, she finally screamed at me to purchase the brand Dr. Soss wrote down (in the wrong base curve size) and she would approve it in the office end. I received my contacts last week and of course, they do not sit well in my eyes and cause blurriness. I called the office back and got Eileen. I told her my issue with the contact lens and she, of course, blamed it on me again stating "Well, the Doctor wrote your base curve size on the prescription". I reminded her that he also wrote down the wrong brand that didn't carry my size, but she had told me to purchase them anyways! I asked for a call back from Dr. Soss (who never calls you back personally) and his office staff called me back to schedule a contact lens check up to see how the contacts fit my eyes. They said they would charge me $40 for the visit if they find that it was my fault in anyway that my contacts didn't fit my eyes. UNBELIEVABLE!! I called this morning to cancel my appointment and told Eileen to remove myself as well as my fiance and son, as patients, with Dr. Soss. Eileen happily exclaimed "OK, BYE!" and hung up on me. After being an established patient for 16 years and bringing in my fiance, and son as patients to their practice, this is how they treat me. You are literally better off at any other Optometrist's office. They will treat you with more respect than his office staff does. read more

Positive: I was accommodated the next day and hoped for a pristine experience. Negative: Front desk staff ~ dry, unwelcoming, unfriendly, untrained. No privacy. Dr. Andrew Soss rushed the appointment when I attempted to explain my vision history and ongoing concerns. Dr. Andrew Soss FAILED to respectfully educate and warn me that the dilation eye drops would STING!! He lacks patience to prepare you and ensure comfort. He sloppily placed a scrunched tissue paper on my face in between his speedy numbing and dilating drops. Do they not train in medical school to communicate efficiently and patiently?!! I WAS NEVER PROVIDED THE PLASTIC DARK SUNGLASSES TO PROTECT MY LIGHT SENSITIVITY EYES OR OFFERED TO WAIT UNTIL MY FOCUS RESUMED PRIOR TO LEAVING. He displayed negativity complaining about various work aspects to staff loudly and how his work chair squeaked. Dr. Andrew Soss conveyed sarcastic, inappropriate, ruthless, immature and arrogant comments to me; making me feel demeaned and unintellectual. One of the most horrendous vision facilities visited. I have been to Soss a total of three times over the years. The first two visits were fine. He was nice, his mother was nice, and his services were professional. The third time was a different story. I had lost my insurance, so I just needed a prescription to take to a discount optician. When I told him this he was rude, smug, and condescending, and he ridiculed the simple question I had about my eyesight. I guess the markup on the specs is pretty hefty, hey "Doc"? I took my prescription to a well-established optician who said the numbers didn't make sense. He called Soss' office and the office told him that I could make another appointment at no charge. Really, we just needed him to check my chart, but he wasn't so inclined. Even the optician was shaking his head in disbelief. There is no way in hell I was going to subject myself to that experience again. I now get my eyes examined at Lenscrafters in Colma where the folks are courteous and seem to get it right the first time. read more

Dr. Soss is a caring, knowledgeable and completely professional eye doctor. I feel compelled to write and make a clear statement of the quality of service Dr. Soss provides. Yes, it is a mom-and-pop operation, but if that means years of caring service and commitment to individual customers' needs -- mom-and-pop is for me. Dr. Soss has been my eye doctor for years, and I have only received very professional, hands-on and caring service from him during this time. He has a significant background in treating glaucoma and other eye diseases, as well as maintaining up-to-date and ongoing resources and educational services for local eye doctors. I have more than usual eye issues and have needed to drop last-minute on a few occasions and was treated promptly and with concern during those times. For those who have had poor experiences getting new glasses - definitely go to Lens Crafters. They are not eye doctors, but a shop set up to provide fast and courteous service, and a huge range of frames at good prices to select from. I have had experiences trying to get 'discounted' designer frames from various locations in San Francisco and was met with stressful parking, unhelpful staff and a poor selection of frames. Lens Crafters was a good, inexpensive and fast solution -- similar to Costco. I have actually purchased frames from multiple locations over the years, spent hundreds of dollars and went both "designer discount" to highly fabulous Palo Alto land -- and in the end found my perfect frames at Dr. Soss' office. However for those of you who want top-notch, professional eye exams and ongoing eye care, I highly recommend Dr. Soss. His staff is does their best, they are always efficient and caring, however there is a "youth factor" with one individual who is still being trained and needs a bit of patience at times as she gets up to speed. ;-) There is plentiful parking with inexpensive hourly rates, and my favorite bakery next door, Le Croissant, with the best croissants I have had in San Francisco. And yes - they are open on Saturday mornings which is extremely helpful. read more

I have been very satisfied since I started seeing Dr. Soss about 7 years ago. It is very obvious that he cares very much about doing things the best way, including making sure his patients choose the best options for contacts and glasses. He has a great selection of eyeglasses and convenient hours (open late Wednesdays & open Saturdays). Dr. Soss and his staff are very friendly, but he is not the type to allow his patient to order something that isn't right for them without a debate. Some people may be put off by this, but he ultimately allows the patient to make the decision and he only states his case because he wants what is best for the patient. I saw the review where someone mentioned that the older admin was very unfriendly. I have to disagree strongly with that statement. She has always been nothing but friendly every time I've seen her. I have no clue about the insurance issue because I don't have vision coverage (I didn't know people actually had vision coverage these days), but his prices are pretty reasonable. read more

Dr Soss is the best optometrist I've ever been to. Totally nice. Explained everything to me. Didn't rush through the exam. And even answered some random/stupid questions I had. He was so good that he "fixed" a bad prescription my last optometrist issued me. I never knew that my eye sight was that bad or could be this clear. And where other eye doctors stop... he's just getting started. Not only does he write up your prescription, but he helps A LOT with choosing the right frames for your face. Style, shape, color. He gave me great feedback and opinions. I've NEVER had a doc do that before. If they don't have the right size or color of the frame, no worries, they are more than willing to order the perfect frames for you. No settling here! I've been going to Dr. Soss for more than 5 years and have always found his demeanor, professionalism, and courtesy to be impeccable. Unlike chain stores, he takes time to do an eye exam thoroughly, and he is trained to diagnose glaucoma. (He does way more than that bullshit puff-of-air screening test the chain stores provide.) My family of 4 have been patients of Dr. Soss for almost 15 years. Whenever we get our annual eye exam, we feel very well taken care of by a true professional. Not only does he do the traditional vision tests but because he also treats patients with glaucoma he looks for other eye health issues and educates us..we always learn so much from him. If you can't find a frame you like with him, you can buy elsewhere and he will still do the prescription lenses at a better price than fine optical stores. WOW. Just, WOW. I am almost speechless. ALMOST... :) I haven't posted in ages, but there's nothing like an idiotic response to one of my reviews to get the good ol' Yelp juices flowing again! Oh, yeah? Bring it! You don't scare me! :P So I wrote a review about my experiences with Burlingame optometrist, Dr. Andrew C. Soss 6 YEARS AGO in 2009! Yes, that's right people! 6 YEARS LATER I receive a response from Dr. Soss. Apparently, Dr. S has only now discovered this newfangled thing called the interwebs & social media. Evidently, this new social review concept isn't going so well for him. If you search optometrists in the Peninsula, Dr. S is one of the worst reviewed optometrists out there. Shoot, even CostCo, Target, & Sears Optical have better ratings. So I suppose Dr. S realized this is not good for business & decided to attack all the low-star reviewers the last 2 days. Gee whiz, Dr. Soss! Life was so much easier when prospective patients could just let their fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages & pick you at random, wasn't it? My original review was actually fairly tame, but now I'm about to get REAL. So let's rip apart his response, shall we? * "Your perception of events and reality are clearly 2 different things" I posted my review long after my 3 visits to Dr. S, so that would have been well OVER 6 YEARS AGO. Am I to believe he actually remembers me & my situation? Additionally, is HIS perception the only one that matters in the world? The one that truly represents "reality"? Nice show of compassion there, doc. * "I don't insist on what type of contact lens a patient wears" Oh, but he did. I told him I had good experiences with my disposable Acuvue soft contacts & he convinced me that hard lenses were way better for my eyes. He was very persuasive & as everyone else has mentioned, condescending. Made me feel stupid for liking soft contacts. But he's the pro, right? Despite my serious doubts, I trusted his opinion. The contacts were so unbearably uncomfortable, thick, dry, & full of irritating bumps. Compounded with Dr. S's dismissive "that's normal" attitude and zero concern for my comfort, I was spurred to go elsewhere. FYI - it was my new optometrist who couldn't believe someone would prescribe such contacts. He never heard of them before & even looked them up. He joked they must be some obscure brand. So, not my words - but nice try on insulting my knowledge of eye care products. I wasted money & months of good eye health on Dr. S's recommendation. He was WRONG in my case. Get over it. * "It seems from your statements that you are a demanding person" I'm not known to be a demanding or unreasonable person, so it's hysterical that Dr. S has made that determination based on my negative reaction to his rude office staff. The receptionist said she'll fax a prescription "right now", I took that literally. When 3 hours pass & I call just to check the fax wasn't lost at work or didn't go through, I was shocked to get my head chewed off by a crotchety old woman. Did I DEMAND to be taken care of before anyone else? NO. So it's funny Dr. S is making accusations about a phone call he wasn't even on. I politely asked a simple question. No patient deserves to be yelled at & told all the reasons why their call is not a priority. But no, Dr. S and his staff don't see the value in good customer service. * Funny how Dr. S has the arrogance to deem my statements "false". Again, MY EXPERIENCE. I could not, for the life of me, get an answer on the date of my last eye exam. Of course Dr. S thinks the best way to defend himself is to discredit & demean me: "Clearly, this is a thought that only a person such as perhaps yourself would conjur up." LOL...so now I'm a liar. Interesting how all the low reviewers had similar experiences & some WAY WORSE. We can't all be demanding liars making stuff up. Just look at his responses. Not a single good remark. Clearly Dr. S is an unhappy man with severe anger issues. With all the options available in the Peninsula, there are far superior optometrists who will treat you nicely & with respect. What a concept, eh? Dr. Soss - since you're obviously new to this whole review process, let me give you a piece of advice: retaliating online with patients like a psycho egomaniac is NEVER A GOOD IDEA. You just end up validating everyone's point that you're a world-class, pompous jerk. You're digging an even deeper hole for yourself and not doing your reputation any favors. I tried to get a basic eye exam here, for a new glasses prescription. Turns out they didn't accept my insurance, which is fine, but in the process of figuring this out the admins weren't very helpful, and Dr. Soss was flat-out rude. The office itself looks like it was low-rent back in 1996 -- it did not inspire confidence that they had to wait for an ancient, flickering CRT monitor to warm up before they could check insurance websites. Given the advances in medical equipment in recent years, I can't imagine what they're using for examinations. By the time they informed me, unpleasantly, that they wouldn't take my insurance, I was ready to walk out the door regardless. read more

Dr. Soss is an excellent ophtalmologist and a glaucoma specialist. My brother has a very difficult severe case of glaucoma, and dr, Soss helps him constantly to maintain the normal pressure of his eyes. Excellent doctor. Took mom into see him after the ophthalmologist at PAMF said that she had done her annual vision check up but couldn't really do much to improve mom's vision and that she "didn't check prescriptions" so mom needed to go see an optometrist for that. But that she (the Doc) didn't see mom's vision getting better for a while till she decided she needed cataract surgery. Dr. Soss checked her vision, indicated that her cataract was mild and had a long way to go, and wrote out a new prescription. What a simple solution! read more

I moved here in the mid 1990s, and since I made my living (retired 2 years ago) with my eyes, proofreading and copyediting, eye care is still a priority. Glasses have to have the right prescription and the right fit because I spent my workday reading. Dr. Soss's office is near home, so one day about 20 years ago I walked in, and I've been a patient ever since. Visiting his office is always a bright spot in the day. The negative reviews puzzle me. Can we be talking about the same person? I've never had the sense that the staff was inept or rude. They're friends. Someone commented that it was like a Mom and Pop operation. And that's bad? Whatever happened to Mom and Pop anyway? I miss them. Once I tried out a new restaurant in the neighborhood and had one of the best meals ever, served by a friendly, attentive staff. When I got home I decided to look them up on Yelp. First post I saw: "This was the WORST meal I've ever had, and the worst service I've been subjected to. Avoid this place at all costs!" I laughed a lot. Of course there were plenty of positive reviews as well. For me it all boils down to the fact that these comments often tell us more about the poster than about the business. Maybe the customer had a bad day, maybe the staff had a bad day, no two people have the same perceptions. So my advice, based on my experience, is go see Dr. Soss and decide for yourself.
