The Peninsula Ophthalmology Group in Burlingame are the ones taking care of the health of my 88yr old mother's eyes. Normally, they are great, but today they had some issues, namely being way overbooked and understaffed. Our appointment was for 11am for an eye exam and checkup/followup for my mother's macular degeneration/cataracts/and overall vision health. Front of house: 3 stars. Very crowded and long wait in the waiting room. At least it was clean, but they clearly did not have enough chairs for the throngs of patients waiting for their eye exams. The receptionists were pre-occupied gossiping & chatting instead of greeting patients. When we finally were able to check in, the receptionist was pretty cold and unwelcoming. Over the phone, they are all very nice and attentive, but in person, they seemed to care more about their personal lives than helping their patients. While waiting, I did walk around and browse the very expensive eyeglasses. I found one that I liked for myself and I was stunned at the cost: $550 just for the frames. Add lenses and extras and it would be $800-1000. Nice, quality, attractive stuff, but no thanks. The designer stuff from Oakley, Maui Jim, etc was all around 2x the retail price from what I know about their costs. But I guess this is Burlingame, and people will pay those premium prices, just because they can afford it? Not me. Anyways, back to the service... Technician/nurse/first assistant: 5 stars. A lady named Donna was the best part of this clinic. Her chair side manner, patience, attention to detail, efficiency, care, and thoroughness were very impressive. She really took great care of my mother as she guided her gently through the process of the eye exam, x-rays, and tests. She was wonderful and I can tell that she loves her job helping people at this clinic. She was very clear, very sensitive, took her time doing all the procedures, and her professionalism & kind spirit are top-notch. We spent the most time with her at the screening machines, then later in the exam room. She is single-handedly, the best part of this clinic. The doctor: after such a pleasant and fantastic experience with Donna the technician, Dr Chern made us wait approximately 45 minutes only to come in, mutter a few quick words, then quickly ran off to deal with other overbooked patients. He was professional, but very short and cold. He seemed to care more about moving on to the next patient, not really interested in listening to or answering my mother's questions. I've never seen a doctor who seemed so rushed and preoccupied with moving on with his day. This is probably prof the they are indeed overbooked here, and as other Yelpers have said, this place does feel like a mill or conveyor belt. Anyways, he saw us for all of about 1-2 minutes and quickly disappeared. When we asked to speak to him about other questions, the receptionist said that he was already with his other patients. Oh well, at least we got to meet him. One star for his rush and inability to spend a little more time with us, despite making us wait 45 minutes for his surprise appearance. All in all, the clinic is ok. The phone call and the technician were the best aspects of their operation. The reception and doctors were pretty cold, rushed, detached, and focused on other things not about us. Donna gets 5-stars for saving this overall experience. She is real, genuine, caring, gentle, efficient, professional, and engaged in her job. The clinic does suffer from overbooking, long wait times, rushed appointments, and cold doctors. The eyeglass center suffers from extremely high & unnecessarily inflated pricing of not even the highest end of designer glasses. The office is clean, crowded, but conveniently located near 101/Millbrae/Peninsula Hospital. Ample parking, and a nice modern building. I only wish that the front of the house and the doctors here were as stellar as Donna the technician. That would indeed create a 5-star experience, but today, they only got 3, and that's because of the incredible exam that was administered by Donna! read more

Never go here. The service is unbelievably bad -- even if someone were trying to give the worst, most disrespectful service possible, they couldn't match what this business does. They don't answer the phone. Or they answer and put you on hold for 20 minutes, then never pick up. If you do manage to get a human, you get a different answer and a different runaround every time, but no resolution. They've got some strange rigid procedures that are geared toward inconveniencing patients. It's always "I can't do that. There is only one person here who takes care of insurance, or prescriptions, etc." We tried for a month to get a copy of a recent prescription, and after a month of calling every other day, we never got it. We just gave up. This is a negative five stars. read more

Patient wait times are horrendous. They don't care that you show up on time for appointments. You'll still wait anywhere from 40 minutes to 1.5 hours before being seen. Patients aren't the priority, high volumes of patients seem to be the priority. Front office staff are pleasant but clearly overwhelmed. The doctors are efficient with their exams, almost robotic, and you can tell they are working in a patient mill. read more

Went for a cataract consult today, and left feeling lousy. The only nice person on their staff was the receptionist, everyone else (technician, optometrist and ophthalmologist) were so rushed and insincere, they didn't seem to care for my questions and concerns. The optometrist who conducted the eye exam on the machines seemed really scripted and didn't really listen. She barely explained what was going on or what the machines were for. During the eye exam, she just had me read but didn't do an exam. Next the ophthalmologist, he came into the room, spoke really fast, and just kept writing. He barely even looked at me, didn't do an exam either and the visit was less than 5 minutes. I even told him I was concerned with how rushed it felt, he said I had to come back for another visit for them to explain the cataract surgery process. No thank you, not after you barely cared. I get that they're busy and have lots of patients, but if they would just slow down to be courteous they wouldn't make us feel like numbers I mean it's our eyes after all. read more

Had a new patient visit with Dr. Koo, who spent less than ten minutes doing the sloppy crappy sorry excuse for an assessment--he totally phoned it in and acted like he was doing us a favor. Couldn't get a single straight answer out of him. Outsized ego. They charged my insurance for a SIXTY minute--yes, one HOUR--appointment! Insurance paid hundreds of bucks. This is ethically/morally questionable! No wonder our health care system is messed up. read more

I have visited the Burlingame office twice now. The front staff is very friendly and helpful. My first experience with one of the doctors was not very good. I spoke with Eileen after the visit and she couldn't have been more empathetic or accommodating. She is an asset to that office. She sat with me for about 10 minutes to hear my grievances and to assist me in getting an appointment with a new doctor. The new doctor was such a relief compared to the first. I called the schedule an appointment for new contacts. I told the receptionist that I have double vision insurance. Gave them all my information and I get an appointment. Upon check in at my appointment, I am informed that I owe money for the contact lenses appointment. I confirm that I have two VSP plans. They don't know that, so we rectify the situation. All is good and I wait to be seen. The nurses and optometrist were amazing. The doctor, very rushed, but I have no eye health issues so perhaps that is standard. Here's why the review is 2-stars. I check out and want to order contacts. Apparently the person checking out can't order contacts. She tells me they will call me this afternoon to order contacts. I wait, no phone call. The next day it took three calls to order contacts. Get them ordered and we are ok. This was on Friday. On Wednesday I get a call from the ophthalmology group telling me they need to order my contacts. I inform them I ordered contacts on Friday. The caller says NO, only he can do it. And I now owe $500! I said NO I have insurance. We argue and he puts me on hold. Comes back on the line to say he's sorry, I'm correct. No cost to me. Yesterday I get a bill for $396. I called today to dispute the bill. Jacqueline tells me my bill is incorrect and i now owe $280! Again, we disagree and she puts me on hold. Comes back and says I owe nothing. Um...OK. I asked to speak to the office manager. Jacqueline tells me the office manager Brenda is not available. I ask her to call me. I'm told the office manager Brenda covers three offices and she's not sure when I will get a call back. This is the first time I have left a negative review. I was told by multiple staff members they "were slammed!" Very disappointed. Honestly, absolutely worst customer service! I will not be a repeat customer. read more

Beware of Dr Zhang. I went in reporting that my right eye was slightly blurry. She looked at my eyes and told me that my optic nerve was swollen and I needed to get an MRI right away. She seemed to think that one just walks into the hospital to get an MRI. Then, without submitting an authorization to the MRI center, she left for the weekend. A week of frantic calling back and forth - do I have brain cancer? a blood clot? - I managed to get her office to authorize it and got the mri, which cost me $1000 out of pocket. Did she do an eye exam on me and identify what was wrong with my vision? No, she did not. Did she do secondary tests to check if my optic nerve is functioning? Nope. Just made me panic and cost me hours of my time and $1000. I went to UCSF for a second opinion. The ophthalmologist there found that my eye has a slight astigmatism and that there was nothing wrong with my optic nerve, but for being a tiny bit larger than normal. A competent ophthalmologist would have done those things before sending me to get an emergency MRI. read more

I've gone to Peninsula Ophthalmology for many, many years and was quite taken aback when I read some of the negative reviews. My experience has always be positive, from making an appointment to having my eyes dilated and examined. I managed to miss my scheduled appointment on Wednesday and when I called to apologize, the receptionist could not have been more pleasant and helpful. Rather than chiding me, she said that she totally understood and worked to slip me in the very next day. I was seen by Dr. Partida who has seen me before. I found her, as in the past, to be very knowledgeable, thorough and extremely client focused and pleasant. I would enthusiastically recommend her and the practice. read more

Though I had a horrific appt. With Dr. Edward Koo, it might not represent this opthalmology group. I had to call a couple of times to get an appt., and when I did, it was a few weeks out; this is not unusual and can live it. But what I can't wrap my head around is this: after my visit with Koo (and before I realized I would not be ultimately go back to him), when we went to the front desk to make a follow-up appt. the front desk would not let us make it! They said they'd call us in a few days. Okaaaay? I'm standing there, have my calendar, ready to organize ... yet they need to reach out to me. I've never seen this protocol. They're also disorganized, e.g. when we asked where the surgery would happen, they did not know! Fumbled around, asked someone else, who turned around and asked a second person ... and finally found someone who knew, and replied, "Mills." They were clearly confused. So confused and disorganized, we could not trust this information. They clearly have a much larger volume of patients than they can keep up with. They have to adjust, e.g. accept fewer patients or hire more doctors and become an even larger group. But how can their business practice be sustainable and maintain a quality of excellence for patient care? They cannot. Their entire team need overall, comprehensive front end and back end training. Btw., they did call for a follow-up--16 days later! By this I time, I'd already done five things: 1. Gotten a second opinion by a cornea specialist. 2. Got an appt. with retina specialist. 3. Made an appt. for cataract surgeon assessment. 4. Scheduled the surgery date! 5. Scheduled two follow-up appts. In sum, this Peninsula Practice might have excellent physicians, which I was not fortunate to have seen. They might be better organized, which again, I did not get to experience. Maybe they have more streamlined processes, whichI was not privy to. For other patients, I hope they do better. To be fair, I did have one excellent experience. When they finally called 16 days later for the follow-up appt., and I refused to maker one, telling them that I had a terrible experience and did not want to, the woman was very kind, very sweet and genuinely sincerely caring, wanting to know if there was anything t=she could help me with. She sincerely was interested in helping. By this time, though, it was too little, too late. I wish I would've gotten her name because she was the only bright shining star in that entire medical group. read more

Impossible to get an appointment despite the fact I've been a patient/customer for 15 years. Not accommodating whatsoever.

I had cataract surgery for both eyes (a month apart for each eye) last year and just had my semi annual checkup. I had very bad nearsightedness (I couldn't even read the big E) Dr Koo thoroughly went over all my options under Medicare and how much was covered and what my estimated co-pay would be. The surgery went very smoothly and I was in and out in no time. I'm extremely pleased - thrilled with the results. For the first time since I was a young 6 year old, I can see distance without glasses or contact lenses. Since I've always been active , skiing, biking, swimming and scuba diving, it is wonderful not having to worry about my contact lenses popping out ! Thank you Dr. Koo. read more

I was concerned about some 'floaters' that recently appeared in one of my eyes. This is usually a benign condition but there is always the concern regarding any possible retinal damage. Tina F., who was so personable and helpful when I called, arranged a 'same day' day appointment for me! The office was very conveniently located for me. The staff were all friendly, professional and efficient. Both Dr. Kirschner, who I had seen in the past, and Dr. Zore who examined me today were thorough, professional, friendly and very efficient. Very disappointed in how my 94 yr old mother was treated. My mom had an exam with Dr Chern several weeks after my 95 yr old dad died who was also a patient. When Dr Chern breezed in my mom told him about my dad having just died. Dr Chern had his face buried in my mom's file and muttered an " I'm sorry" then asked her if she wanted to get her other cataract removed . When she declined, he closed the file and flew out of the room. Completely insensitive and rushed. They rush you and can't wait to schedule surgeries . I called in and booked an appointment for eye exam and eye wellbeing check up. When I checked in, the receptionist said the doctor who I am going to see is not the right type of doctor for my visit. He only does surgery not the eye exam or eye health check up. So no appointment for me. I ended up wasting a trip in the rush hour for nothing! If they knew they booked the wrong doctor for me, why didn't they call me before the appointment or make another arrangement! This is a very disappointing experience. read more

Our whole family has been patients at this office for years, and every visit has been a good one. Taking our son here when he was very young was nerve wrecking, but the doctors were very good at alleviating his anxiety. We've had exams with Dr. Ken Chern, Dr. Zore and recently, Dr. Angela Yang. I like how thorough they are in their exams, and how I don't ever feel rushed - I usually ask lots of questions and basically, they are good teachers. They take the time to explain things to me in a way that I can understand. The front desk is a bit of a hit and miss, I had one experience whether they booked me for an entirely different type of exam and I had to come back a few weeks later. (Kind of a waste of time!!!) But the quality of the doctors and the care has me coming back. They are amazing! read more

I was struggling suddenly with vision issues and learned through an eye exam that I had developed cataracts and needed to be seen by an ophthalmologist. Peninsula Opthamology, and particularly Dr. Kenneth Chern, was an excellent choice for me. The office is conveniently located in Burlingame with plenty of parking in a covered high rise garage. The entire staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I am now seeing well without glasses after two cataract surgeries and very happy with the results. read more

I will not recommend this clinic to anyone; 1: The front desk person will force you to leave your SSN; They kept pushing until you tell them the numbers; They don't need this but they still want this which caused a data leakage risk; 2: The front desk people are not responsive at all; They will put you on a 'brief' hold, when they say 'brief' it will be at least 10 or 15 mins; and they never call you back if you hang up. 3: The equipments are dirty; They didn't clean or defect the machines at all and you will see foundations and black dirt which had been on that machine for quite a long time; It took me some effort to remove that using wipes; 4: I ordered a pair of glasses and want to follow up with the order since it has been a month and they told me someone would call me but actually no one called; Not responsive at all even I spent at least 1 hour today to contact them; I would request them to delete my information forever forever. and I will also cancel my future appointments with this clinic. read more

I have been going to Peninsula Ophthalmology group for over 20 years. All the doctors are great. My review today is about the office staff. I had laser surgery on Monday, 10/28 and was prescribed an antibiotic eye drop. I did not receive the prescription on checking out at 5:50 pm. I realized I did not have the prescription when I got to my car and when back to the office but it was closed. 6:00 pm. I called the office on Tuesday to see if the prescription was sent in to a pharmacy and if so which one. I found out it was sent to CVS Caremark, mail order pharmacy. I told the person I spoke to that I did not think that was right because I assumed I was to start taking the antibiotic drops right away. The person said she would have it resent to a local pharmacy. I never heard from the pharmacy that my order was ready so I went to it after work on Tuesday 10/29, and was told they could not fill the order because my insurance would not authorize it because Caremark had already started processing my order. Please note I NEVER received information from either Peninsula or Caremark, what my prescription number was so I could not follow up with Caremark. I then called my insurance and they said I had to call Caremark. At least my insurance gave me a phone number for Caremark. I called Caremark and was informed that my order should arrive on Saturday 11/2, 5 days after I should have started using the antibiotic eye drops. I call Peninsula Ophthalmology group on Wednesday 10/30 and ask to speak with my doctor to see if I still needed to take the antibiotics since I was already on day 3 since the laser surgery. The person said they would pass my message to the doctor. I also asked that the office manager call me because I had an issue with why they would send my prescription to a mail order pharmacy and not a local one since I am sure I should have started using the drops on day one. To this day 10/31/24, I NEVER received word from the doctor or the office manager. Also note, POG still uses paper forms for almost everything. I guess they are afraid of computers. Maybe the office managers will call once she reads this post. read more

Let me start by saying that if you're looking for a doctor just to maintain healthy eyes. This place is not for you. First they overbooked, meaning there were 2 different people scheduled at the same time as you. Then after the assistants do their job well, after an additional 30 minutes of waiting the doctor comes in, and does the quickest consultation he is ready to get you out of here. And if you ask about the retina scan, he looks at you like you are crazy for taking his time. So they make another appointment for it. Thus this brings me to today. Again overbooked, did my ratina scan 40 minutes ago, took less then 5 minutes. Still not seen a doctor. So again if you want to be treated as a human being and a patient whose eye health is important, before it's too late. This place is not for you. read more

The physicians and practitioners are great. I highly recommend them. This review is for the eye glass shop. They are overpriced, poor service and they don't honor their products. I will see these doctors because they are excellent bout not the eyeglass portion. Terrible. The fact that they tried to charge me $375 for Oakley frames that are $175 retail was terrible. When I told them I saw them at Oakley for $175 she seemed surprised that I showed her the Oakley retail price. After that they reduced it to $175. Clearly overcharging me and got called out. Then the lenses didn't work and they basically said too bad. read more

For the past two-1/2 years I have experienced the worst possible service imaginable. Waiting on hold for 28 minutes only to be disconnected. Making an appointment with my doctor only to show up and get someone else entirely -- and my doctor was there. Have tried for two days top get an emergency contact lense replacement and have had to call 4 times to find out what was going on. Moments ago was the last straw. They had done nothing for two days. They weren't missing information or anything, they just didn't do anything. I was willing to cut some slack for covid but frankly this bad service occurred before covid and is now continuing. I'm finding a new doctor and group. This is horrible. read more

Horrible horrible customer service. I have been calling since Wednesday and every single day since then to try to make a simple appointment to check my prescription. And each time I call they have told me that they would return my call. Plus I cannot believe how difficult it is to make an appointment just for a prescription. They give me some lame excuse that their ophthalmology prescription Department doesn't have their schedule up and is not up on the computer so they can't even make an appointment. They can at least call me back to explain this like they said they would but now it's Tuesday and still no call back or anything. Very unprofessional. Dr.'s Chern and Kirshner were completely dismissive after a botched cataract surgery, in which one of my pupils became permanently dilated. Both doctors acted like it was a result that "had never happened before" and implied that it was no big deal. I paid the premium price for cataract surgery and ended up with the dilated pupil and still don't have anywhere near 20/20 vision in either eye. Don't bother with the premium package. It is just marketing. I"m now with a different practice who are taking me seriously and am going to be spending more $$ to mitigate the after effects of the permanently dilated pupil. read more

I've been coming to this clinic for more than 10 years. It's mainly because of Dr. Koo. He's kind, warm and helpful. I gave the score of 1 because the medical assistants are not helpful and not really nice. I ask for the copy of my previous prescription because they have limited selections for eyeglasses and pricey too. I was told that I'll get it in the email in the afternoon. Another day had passed and I still didn't get it. When I called again, I was told that I'll get it in the afternoon. Nothing was sent. I was about to walk in to get it in person but I was told that they only do it via email. Then the last person I talked to, said that it would take 24 to 48 hours. Today is Friday (my initial request was Thursday) and I would get it on Monday. I spoke to three different staff and I don't like to name them here. The third staff was the one that sounded like she wasn't helping me today, "PERIOD" You know who you are. Please change the way you talk to people. I was frustrated and I said, if this is the way you treat me I'm not coming back to see my doctor. This person told me that she is cancelling my next appointment with Dr. Koo. So I said, cancel it then. My last message to her was, "you're so mean!" and I hanged up. It is too stressful to deal with them and felt like I was pushed away. It's not worth it to see Dr Koo again because the front desk staff are not helpful. I don't like write bad reviews....I'm not an unhappy person that complains too much. However, this case, I have to..... it's not about not getting what I want but it's the way she talked....I believe that healthcare facilities should provide a patient/client positive experience. Addendum: Minutes later I received a call from Shalimar, business manger. She was kind and validating my frustration with the last staff that spoke to me. She was offering a resolution to send what I was asking for. I don't need it anymore. I already found another doctor. I asked her to print my feedback and have the staff read this. I try to not make judgements. Please have your medical assistants read the feedbacks of the clients. I'm just one of the very many patients of the excellent doctors there. However, I don't mind getting a different one just to avoid a bad encounter like this. read more

One of the worst experience in my life.. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Kenneth chern but some other doctor came to see me. During the eye exam, she poked in my right eye so i started having the pain so called their phone number for on-call doctor (because it is after hours). They called me after an hour and i was away from phone so they left a voice mail with phone number. When i called the number mentioned in VM, it went to VM with a message saying that i should go to emergency in case of life threatening. So I again called to make another request for on call doctor I would never return again.. Update: Its been more than 12 hours, the oncall doctor has not called me yet. read more

We arrived on time for a morning appointment. Had to wait 22 minutes to see the doctor. Waste of our time and shows little emphasis on customer experience. They force you to use insurance credit or pay a hefty fee out of pocket if you have contacts. This is a because VSP does not cover a "contact lenses exam". This place is a mill. Showed up on time and told to wait outside on a chair in the hallway and I'd be called. 15-20 minutes later they called in two people simultaneously to see the same doctor for which I had an appt. Half an hour after my appt no one said anything to me and I knew it would likely be at least another half an hour until I was seen because of the two people who had already gone in in front of me. Doctor's time was obviously much more valuable than mine because they didn't care about me. Hour and a half wasted out of my day. Wish I could bill them for that. read more

You have to be really persistent for them to listen to you - it's really annoying and they take forever and a day to check you in despite having all the symptoms, consultations and check ups. They don't listen to you or care about what's happening it's just really frustrating. 3 stars because my surgery for my bottom eyelid went well read more

Thank you, Dr. Koo for making me feel 100x better about my recent procedure! I had a mole on my eyelash line, which I had removed 6 days prior to my visit to POG. I freaked out because my eyeball was still super red - 3 days after the procedure, and the area of the removal was still hurting. I was worried that the doctor I went to botched the job and ruined my eye, but after Dr. Koo checked it out, I felt much more at ease. He said she did a good job and kept most of my lashes. He gave me some tips about aftercare, followup and game me some ointment to prevent infection. Yay for Dr. Koo! read more

Peninsula Ophthalmology Group - Optometrists Near Me - Burlingame, California

I "heart" Dr. Koo. I really do. I have him to thank for figuring out what was wrong with my eyes (and my contact lenses). The discomfort started in November of last year. I could barely stand to wear my contacts for more than a few hours. They were getting red, teary and sensitive to light. I started having to wear sunglasses just to work in front of my computer. My reglar eye doctor couldnt figure out what was wrong. My wedding day was approaching and I was getting panicked that I'd have to walk down the aisle in my wedding dress, wearing glasses, because I couldn't stand my contacts anymore. So I went to Dr. Koo because his reviews were fantastic. I figured he would know what to do. On my first visit, he swapped my brand of contacts to Acuvue Oasys. Still no results. Then he figured out that the curvature of my eyes had actually changed slightly, so I needed a slightly wider lens. This was unusual. He says 80% of people will do OK with any contact lens curvature, but my eyes decided to become sensitive all of a sudden. Within a day in my new lenses, my eyes felt fantastic. No more tears, no more sensitivity to light, no more redness. I can't believe my original eye doctor couldn't figure this out himself! Needless to say, Dr. Koo is my go-to guy from now on. I should also mention that Dr. Koo is not in my vision network (They take VSP but I have Blue Shield MES Vision). But he is so great I was willing to pay $60/visit just to see him. When it comes to my vision, I don't want to take chances so it's worth every penny. Besides being a great opthalmologist, Dr. Koo is really quirky and funny. He made me feel comfortable and relaxed in each of my visits. He took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained what was going on with my eyes at every step. I never thought I'd actually ever enjoy going to the eye doctor, but with Dr. Koo I know with 100% certainty tat I am in the very bestofhands. The staff is great, too. This business doesn't want you. Period. I called 4 times to find out if they have frames that I wanted, they hang up on me multiple times.

Went to Peninsula Ophthalmology as we love Dr . kirschner. However, the medical assistant that took care of us was the rudest, most unprofessional person I have ever met! Spoke harshly to me and prevented me from accompanying my husband into the exam room for a procedure as he was anxious and wanted me with him. She promised to come get me after he was settled and she didn't! Told him that he couldn't have me in the room with him as it was too small! There was a chair in the room for family! My husband had to speak with his doctor that he wanted me in the room in order to get me. The doctor had to come out to the waiting room to bring me back! If their office protocol is to make this facility available and friendly for patients and their support systems (family) they are really dropping the ball! read more

This is a factory type of environment. The assistants don't seem to know what to do and the whole vibe is one of trying to process as many patients as possible. I would go here in an emergency but not for any long term care. The doctor I met with was cold. read more
