I was referred to his office from urgent care for my 5 year-old daughter who cut through the tip of her finger. The office and care team were condensencing and dismissive as I tried to establish what would be timely and effective care. They refused to see her until after the period where anything could be done to repair the finger. Rather than help me find someone in the area who could help my daughter they put me on a series of holds, promises to call back and finally told me they couldn't help since everyone went home. They said I could go back to urgent care (who refered to me to them in the first place and were not able to repair the finger). I should have made more calls to other providers earlier in the Dr. Butler's care team showed complete incompetence and once I was in the vortex I couldn't get out. Pamf's system is also clearly broken and they are not able to provide quality care for childern. This was my last child still at PAMF and I will now transfer her to another system as well. read more

This Doctor botched a surgery to repair a ruptured finger tendon and then took no responsibility for it. What else can I say,

Dr. Butler is the VERY BEST hand surgeon there is. All the visits and procedures have been very positive experiences with Dr. Butler. Below are my issues over the years. 1. He initially operated on my left hand to remove a pyogenic granuloma on my left hand - something that was bleeding and hurts every time I held a golf club - which is my favorite past time. I had full anesthesia, and Dr. Butler worked carefully to remove that annoying granuloma. I have been fine for some time, and back to doing every day things and also playing golf - all thanks to Dr. Butler. 2. A few years ago, I had suffered from de Quervain's tenosynovitis, a condition that brought severe pain to my left wrist - esp. every time when I swing a golf club. I went to several other orthopedic surgeons but no one can help me. Dr. Butler patiently administered not 1, not 2, but 3 cortisone injections, and after the 3rd injection, the problem went away. 3. A few months ago, my left ring finger started to click when I would wake up, and as it turns out, this is a symptom called Trigger Finger. Dr. Butler first tried a few cortisone injections, but they didn't work. Dr. Butler then recommended surgery, which worked well. 4. Left wrist tendonitis: Dr. Butler asked me to get the wrist brace, and use it in concert with Volterran, and both are working. When other doctors were not effective, Dr. Butler always finds a solution. If you need an excellent hand surgeon, look no further than Dr. Butler. Thanks. read more

Dr. Butler is extremely knowledgeable yet discusses diagnosis and treatment options in easy to understand terms. I never felt rushed. He is thorough, knowledgeable and caring. Maybe he's a good surgeon, but for my issue he was lame. Easy diagnosis (saw him for about 5 minutes), passed off to his PA who made a painful temporary splint and then wrote the wrong referral so I had to get them to write another one. Since they were gone for the holidays, this delayed treatment by about 3 weeks. Seems like a nice guy, but needs to get his office sorted out. read more

Dr Butler came in exam room for about 5 minutes tops and suggested surgery When asked about recovery or any other cons he said well I can guarantee it will not get worse, as his only response. Asked about other alternatives other than surgery his response was I am not a candidate, other responses to another alternative doesn't work.. appointment felt rushed and he didn't even see X-rays or anything to determine the severity of my injury. I strongly urge you to be cautious in your dealings with Jaret Butler MD. I initially met with Jaret when I went to Sutter Health San Carlos urgent care with a hand injury. I initially received X rays from my urgent care doctor, Mr Butler was called when the xrays revealed I had a broken thumb. He told Me that he felt surgery was necessary, that I needed a plate surgically implanted that week, otherwise my thumb would not heal correctly....he said it would be a 12 week recovery along with the associated potential risks of infection that are inherent with surgery. I was at the time fearful, hands are of course very important and I want mine to work effectively for many more years, and thought I could trust the doctor, and so I initially scheduled the surgery. However a gut feeling told me to get a second opinion. And I'm glad I did. After seeing first a Physicians Assistant, and then another orthopedic hand specialist , they were both shocked that anyone suggested I get surgery, as the break was "perfectly" aligned and would heal fine on its own being in a cast for 6 weeks. Not only That, they said it was odd that Jaret Butler MD had made no mention of the surgery I had scheduled with him on my medical records, BUT he had written that in his opinion the thumb would heal fine on it's own.....WHAT?! Seems extremely shady to me. It is my opinion, especially after reading some of these other reviews, that Jaret Butler MD, wanted to perform unnecessary surgery on me, and I can only imagine that's because he wanted to get paid for the operation I didn't actually need. I cut my thumb flexor tendon and Dr Jaret Butler performed a repairing surgery. As I understand this is a technically challenging kind of surgery and it was done perfectly! First (most important), my thumb functionality and flexibility are fully recovered. Second, the traces of the surgery are hardly recognizable, there is no scar tissue. So, I would say Dr Butler is highly skilled and professional. Also he is very friendly and positive. read more

I was referred to Dr. Butler after suffering a wrist fracture from a bicycle accident in November 2019. The injury was classified as a "comminuted intra-articular fracture distal radius" and required tricky surgery to restore the distal radius surface and install a titanium plate with screws. Dr. Butler was friendly but direct on the severity of the injury. He had me into surgery the next day after some bloodwork. Everything went smoothly for the surgery without any issues. There were several follow-up visits to x-ray the joint to assess the alignment and healing. I regained full mobility of the joint after weeks of re-hab without any problems. It has now been three years since the surgery and I am happy to report that the wrist is doing great - 100%. I have been meaning to write reviews for Dr. Butler for some time, and have finally gotten around to it! Dr. Butler was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable in his field of hand-and-wrist, and clearly very skilled at surgery. He was highly regarded by multiple doctors and staff that I spoke with during my care and recovery, so I always felt that I was in good hands. Dr. Butler gave me a cortisone shot in the tissue, not the joint, which I later learned had little or no chance of being successful. His previous shot in the joint was unsuccessful, for which I do not blame him. Worse, Dr. Butler said that since the shot would murky up the area, I could not get an MRI for a month, which meant I had to endure pain for that period. I later learned from the MRI technician that the shot had no effect on the MRI reading. I eventually had surgery, which corrected the situation, but Dr. Butler's successive shots, with the wrong info on the MRI, delayed my relief by several painful months. read more

I just recently just recently had wrist surgery by Dr. Butler. I had a complex fracture. I have a personal history with Dr. Butler. He performed surgery on my mother 8 years ago. I found him to be extremely personable, caring and professional. My recent wrist surgery went very well. He made me feel very comfortable and explained thoroughly what the procedure would entail. 12 months and 2 thumb surgeries later, I have at least as much pain as before my CMC joint surgery. The first surgery fixed one problem but created others and left me with what is apparently permanent nerve damage in my dominant hand. The second surgery (to repair the nerve damage) did nothing to correct it and created yet more problems. I agree with other reviewers that Dr. Butler is very nice, but I feel he grossly understated how difficult and painful the recovery from this surgery would be. Please, please, please: before you even consider this surgery, exhaust all your non-surgical options. Hand therapist Denise Vetter at PAMF Occupational Therapy in Sunnyvale is outstanding and very realistic. I can't recommend her highly enough. read more

Dr. Butler is amazing. I broke my wrist in two places snowboarding and saw him shortly after the fracture. He was patient, discussed surgery vs. non-surgery options, didn't pressure me into one or the other. I opted for a cast and it's been healing very smoothly. I am post-op for a football injury -- the middle finger of my left (dominant) hand. One doesn't need to like one's surgeon; confidence in his or her skills is what matters most. After breaking my finger in several places while playing football, my primary care physician referred me to Dr. Gutow and then ultimately Dr. Butler. Then, after getting a second opinion from another doctor who also recommended surgery, I scheduled surgery with Dr. Butler. Dr. Butler and the PA Lisa Ryder were professional and answered all of my questions. They gave a realistic assessment of my recovery and suggested that I should recover roughly 90% of my range of motion and that sports would be at least 3 months away. I didn't ask about how much physical therapy would be required, but should have. I was later surprised to find out I would need to do substantial physical therapy, and needed to rearrange my work schedule. The surgery was mostly uneventful -- which is about as good as you can ask for. The hand therapist Wendy Levine also was highly professional and helped me work through the three months and roughly 20 hours of physical therapy. After about three months I could start doing light sports that involved my hand. It took another few months to build back to full strength in my hand. And now a year later, I barely notice anything unusual about my hand. I can play tennis and lift dumbbells. There is only minimal scarring on the 50mm incision. It is light enough that nobody notices it unless I tell them what it is. Thank you Dr. Butler, Lisa Ryder, and Wendy Levine for all your work. In July, an unlucky slip and fall left me with a broken left wrist in several places. I was referred to Dr. Butler after another Orthopedist told me I would need surgery. I've never had surgery and was terrified at the thought of it. During my initial consultation with Dr. Butler, I grilled him on every possible thing that could go wrong and borderline insulted him for one, less than 4 star rating I had seen on another site. He assured me the surgery was the best thing for me and how it would help my wrist heal quickly and prevent more issues down the road. With hesitation (and some tears), I booked the surgery. The day before my surgery, I had done one too many Google searches and called his office in a panic. Not only did a nurse on his team call me to address my questions and concerns but Dr. Butler also called me to help calm my nerves (and tell me to put the internet away). Day of the surgery, I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the facilities were in San Carlos + the pre & post-op teams were amazing. I was in minimal pain post surgery (0-3) and started PT 10 days post-op. Its been 6 weeks and I've already gained ~90% mobility back and my scarring improves a ton week over week. Dr. Butler is truly talented at what he does. I'd highly recommend him to anyone! read more

What to expect ; * A feeling of neglect * A front office staff that will misinform you * An unsettled sense when you realize you viewed as another dollar towards a paycheck rather than a patient My experience; I went to Dr. Butler on a recommendation of my physician after I had a snowboarding injury to my finger. It was a small injury that left my finger bent and crooked but regardless I thought I would have it looked at. Upon arrival at the office, at first it went as expected; I waited a good bit and then once in the room, met with a nurse. The nurse upon seeing me, stated I should get an x-ray (not mentioning how much additional it would cost) then immediately ushered me over to the x-ray lab. After the x-ray, I went back and met again with the nurse, who prepped for Dr. Butler's entrance. He met with me for only 2 minutes, informing me that the x-rays taken could not provide any useful information. He then recommend me to try a splint for 6 weeks and mentioned that they did not have my size in the room. He left to go grab a split that fit and he stated that he would be right back. Dr. Butler never returned, instead he sent in another nurse, leaving several of my questions that I had unanswered. Prior to leaving, I checked with the receptionist to confirm that I could leave and would not expect any other bills. To my surprise, 2 months later I received 2 bills totaling close to $500 for the visit. I normally would never go out of my way to write a bad review, but do to the rushed urgency to receive an x-ray followed by the detached abrupt actions by the Dr. Butler, I realized I would not recommend this clinic to a friend and this would be the first location to receive a bad review on my behave. From my experience at this location, if you want to go to a doctor that will leave you feeling neglected, a front office staff that leaves you misinformed, and unsettled by the fact that that you are just another dollar towards a paycheck, I recommend searching elsewhere. read more

I'm basing this review purely on an experience I had meeting with Dr. Butler when I was postpartum and had had numbness in three of my fingers for a couple of months. After a cursory check Dr. Butler declared I had carpal tunnel (mind you I didn't have any actual wrist pain, weakness or limited wrist mobility). His suggested solution was either a steroid shot or surgery. When I suggested perhaps physical therapy or that it might be nerve related and perhaps caused by a pinched nerve as I had a lot of neck pain and rib cage pain from being in uncomfortable positions while breastfeeding for extended periods of time, he just brushed off my feedback and told me that I was wrong that it could only be carpal tunnel and that he would not do any other tests and that those were my only two options. While Dr. Butler was not outright rude, he was patronizing, condescending and didn't seem to understand my situation or my personal preferences. He treated my input on the situation as if I had no idea what I was talking about and proceeded to explain carpal tunnel to me like I was five years old... trust me after two months of not feeling my fingers I had already googled carpal tunnel syndrome many times and knew all the details and didn't need someone treating me like I had no clue what it was. Also, the fact that he would suggest a steroid shot to a woman who is actively breastfeeding seems downright negligent as steroids linger in the body and that is not something I wanted getting into my newborn baby's milk. Besides which I had had a steroid shot many years ago for a shoulder injury and I knew for a fact that a steroid shot was a quick fix for pain, not a long term fix, and since I was not actively feeling pain but was in fact feeling the absence of ANY feeling in my fingers, the shot seemed like it would do more harm than good. However, Dr. Butler was not interested in my opinion or my prior experience with the steroid shot and therefore I was done with him. Thanks for nothing Dr. Butler. This visit was a complete waste of my time. I left feeling frustrated and hopeless. I would not recommend Dr. Butler to anyone if just for the simple fact that he is a poor listener and does not seem to care about the patient's preferences or experiences but only seems to care about his own opinion. Ultimately, I sought out care from a very good osteopath and I also went to physical therapy (I was able to get a referral from another primary doctor) and within a month and a half I had regained feeling in my fingers and had no lingering numbness or pain issues with my wrist or any other part of that hand. I am SO thankful that I did not give up after my horrible meeting with Dr. Butler as he would have had me believe that there were only two options to solve my problem and clearly he was very WRONG. It turns out my problem WAS nerve related and once the osteopath and PT specialist was able to loosen up the area in my shoulder and neck that was causing the problem my fingers immediately started to regain their feeling. read more

Dr Butler is a fantastic surgeon! Not only is he extremely patient with all my daunting questions, but he thoroughly answers them to my satisfaction. At first I went to him for carpel tunnel for both my wrists, and a ganglion in my thumb. I was afraid of surgery, I heard so many horror stories. I would talk to him, he would smile, and explain fully, and never push me to do anything I wasn't sure about. It took me a few visits with cortisone shots in my trouble areas to relieve my pain before I realized it was time for me to trust him and have the surgery. He was so kind, and attentive to my surgical and patient needs before, during, and after surgery. It went well and immediately fixed my numbing issues, and pain in thumb. He must be an artist because my wrist shows no signs of a scar, and my thumb looks beautiful. I now have a bone spur in my thumb area causing me a great deal of pain, and I had finally decided it was time to do the surgery. He is my choice!! But I am moving out of the area and will not be able to have Dr. Butler perform the surgery for me in time, I can't tell you how sad that makes me. It is a long and difficult process to start with someone new and trust that they will do the quality job Dr. Butler does. I believe in him! And really only want him to do the surgery. Maybe he can squeeze me in before this Thurs yet... hope so, I trust him to do a quality job, and be there for me after (I am willing to drive 10 hrs to do follow up with him, he is that good)! There is no one else as good as he is on all fronts, seriously he just makes you feel so at peace with his demeanor and you feel safe with the quality of his work. I feel like Dr. Butler swooped in and rescued me from a very bad situation. I fell on to a sharp dried plant that stabbed me and broke off inside. After 1 surgery elsewhere that pulled just one small foreign body out and a diy removal of another piece.. I was desperate for relief and wanted an expert. I lucked in to finding Dr. Butler, board certified in hand surgery. Dr.Butler and his staff really listened to me like I hadn't been heard for over a month with foreign things stuck in my infected hand. They rushed me in and got me in for a consult the day after I called. 2 days later Dr.Butler had me on the schedule in the OR and removed 3 more items. They even me lined up with hand therapy the very next day. I'm finally on the road to recovery. I truly can't thank Dr. Butler and his professional team enough for helping me. I finally felt heard. I've learned how valuable this quality is after over a month of pain and suffering, calling surgeons' offices trying to explain what had happened to me. Dr. Butler had the gift of being really good at what he does yet being kind and accessible all at once. I'll be singing his praises to anyone who'll listen. read more

Dr. Butler is an outstanding surgeon. I saw one orthopedic surgeon who said it looked like my broken wrist was a complicated case and recommended that I see Dr. Butler, a hand specialist. Dr. Butler didn't push me to have surgery, but answered questions and explained that if I did not have surgery, I might have about 60% use of my hand in the future and if I did have surgery, probably 80-95% use. It was exceedingly obvious to my husband and me the first time we met him that he is extremely skilled, experienced, and thorough. He is also a genuinely nice person! I am very glad that I had the surgery because when the surgery began the extensive damage to countless bones became apparent. I am delighted with his work and highly recommend him. read more
