Recently retired USAF, never went to a 'Barber' shop for anything other than a high and tight haircut, for 24 years, until a couple of days ago, as I needed to get a handle on my out of control beard. Recommend: Absolutely and without a doubt! Backstory: Had to visit San Diego for a training convention and found this Barber shop with a few hours in between schedules. I paused at the door thinking there is no way they'll accept a walk in, and, I was wrong. I poked inside and gently asked if they accepted walk-ins and Granger, without missing a beat said, (motioning her finger to me to come in and sit) "Come on in, I can take you right now". Granger immediately presented her name to me, asked me mine, and welcomed me like a family member to her chair. (I have to take a moment and share, the personable, enthusiastic, welcoming attitude is mind boggling and warm to see in a post Covid era. I have rarely had women in this industry work my haircuts, only because that's just been my experiences throughout the military but I certainly don't care WHO cuts my hair, just that they listen, guide and communicate through it!) So, again, I needed a beard trim... In speaking with her, she presented an immediate, well communicated plan on taking my horribly kept beard and how she would transform it. There are two different styles of beard cuts available and I went with the quicker option though I always wanted to try the steamed version, I just didn't have the time. I was beyond impressed at the interaction experienced today in being that her personal skillset, approach and charisma was the charm and reason, you need to visit this Business. If she was a corporate business woman in a Boardroom, she could swoon anyone who lived in the desert to purchase sand. Her personality was fresh, her attention to detail was spot on and I enjoyed the visit and experience - hands down. Granger shared that this shop was a family business in which her father, Andy, purchased 31 years ago. I hope those that read this visit this location as you are mutually welcomed with free coffee, sodas or water, magazines and a wonderful overlay of personal photos and items covering all the walls. The decor accouterments are a wonderful touch and encapsulates a distinct, long time business personality here. My other half has been going to Andy's nearly weekly (he is a Marine, after all) for over 10 years. Andy and Chemene (and now Granger!) have provided a reliably wonderful experience during those hundreds of visits. The Marine in question has extraordinarily thick, luscious hair, which Andy meticulously shapes and keeps looking dapper. On the rare occasion that Andy doesn't have the availability for his haircut, he has easily been able to schedule with Granger and has been equally pleased with the quality and experience. This shop is such a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere, that even my 7 year old daughter loves to tag along and visit with Chemene. Any time the Marine is forced to get a haircut elsewhere out of necessity, he laments his misfortune and immediately makes an appointment with Andy to fix it. I'm sorry I'm posting a not-so-good review about this place, specially when I'm reading the ones they've already got which seem to be mostly good ones but this was my experience with them: So, this was my first time going there and there was this woman doing a haircut. No other customers were waiting so I was next. She greeted me and informed me the price was 36 dollars (expensive, specially when I have short hair and all I needed was a buzzing) followed by asking me if I was ok with that to which I said yes. Next thing, she tells me that there was one more thing which was that while she was doing her job I was not allowed to talk! I sat down in the waiting area but then it struck me that was rude and I changed my mind. First of all I don't go to a barbershop to talk, and even if was a talker. for her to set it as a rule was so unprofessional, so I got up, made a phone call and left. Never going back, that's not how you treat customers. Plus, her vibe was negative. read more

The way Andy is able to cut my hair so exact to my preferences, so consistently, time and time again, is almost superhuman. And he is so pleasant and fun to chat with. My old barbershop used to have a sign up that said "Good Price, High Quality, Fast": Pick two. I had never given it much thought until coming here several times, where you only get one: fast. Andy and his family seem very friendly. I was hesitant leaving a below average review after seeing all the positive reviews, and especially the snarky, defensive, comments left by the business owner, so I decided to give this place 3 tries before coming to my conclusion. I live in the area and get my haircut at many different locations as I'm not really picky about my hair. It's a standard crew cut that's hard to mess up. The only thing you have to watch out for is that my hair will begin to stick up instead of laying down if you cut it too short. With that being said, my wife is always the one to tell me when it's time for a haircut. She's generally very pleased with the result afterwards. Every time after I came back from here, she gave me the rare look of disapproval. After each cut I asked for a slightly different variation to try and fix the issues my wife described from the previous haircut. Which brings me to my next point, consistency. This place is nothing if not consistent. Despite asking for something slightly different each time, I got the same haircut every time. And it takes Andy about 10 minutes every time. I'm not one to sit here and time how long you're giving me a haircut, but if you're cutting my hair in 10 minutes, when I'm usually there for probably 30 minutes, I'm inclined to conclude that the consistent and quick haircut leads to carelessness. Reading through similar reviews, it seems like this is an common thing that people have pointed out. The crowd here seems like it's mostly much older folks and kids. Which makes a lot of sense to me. All in all, if your priority is getting in and out as fast as possible, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend Del's which is very close and has solid reviews. The demographic is more young professionals and middle-aged folks. read more

My wife has been suggesting I visit a barber and not the normal commercialized places. So today...I said screw it. Located just west of Broadway on Grand, lies nestled in the old town strip mall is this little barber shop. Walking in, I was greeted by walls adorned with pictures, setting a feeling of the 50s and 60s. The ceiling adorned with hats of all sorts. Old nostalgic barber chairs lined the middle of the floor, each of them turned slightly this way and that. Behind the middle chair stood the Owner's Daughter, Granger. Granger being talkative was trimming up a customer's hair. She told me she didn't have time right that second for a walk in and I said that's fine. Scheduling was easy as can be for a same day appointment. I got back to the barber shop about 15 minutes ahead of my appointment time. She finished up her customer and then sat me in the seat. Taking her time to understand how I wanted my hair, she then wasted no time getting the cut done. Enough talking between her and me to make the time an enjoyable experience. Haircut: 5 out of 5 Personal touch: 5 out of 5 Atmosphere: 5 out of 5 Price: 5 out of 5 Let me be clear. This is not your bougie man salon. This is no sports clips. This is a barber shop. My regular hair stylist was out of town and I'm usually terrified by new barbers. I've had a few horror stories so I don't like going to new places for a haircut. Andy's has a 50's feeling to it. Everyone was friendly, they have drinks & snacks for you to enjoy as you wait. Setting up my appointment was extremely easy. They ask you to show a little early which isn't a problem, especially since they have snacks. :) The barber did an excellent job cutting my hair as well as trimming and shaping my beard.
