Despite the late hour (past 10pm!), there was still a bit of a crowd here which is always a good sign. I ordered, paid and a moment later, was handed the custard. Mrs. K. is a classicist and so we were with the regular chocolate custard. It doesn't need anything mixed in to improve. I mean come on it's Andy's can they get anything less than 5 stars?! It's just the iconic walkup/drive thru ice cream spot. Endless options and they're all good. One of the few places I order a double strawberry shake and they really get it right. I have to give big kudos to this location. We were picking up ice cream for someone with a nut allergy, I have never seen any place work so hard to make sure there was no cross-contamination and pass the information to every employee along the way to make sure that the right thing was done with the order. Driving through were told by hotel clerk we had to try Andy's Frozen Custard and boy am I glad we did. This was by far the best frozen custard I have ever tasted. This place is must-go if you are in the Springfield area! I ordered their Ozark Turtle and finished it in no time that I almost ordered another one-I have the sweetest tooth though. The vanilla custard with the hot chocolate fudge and the pecans make it so yummy!!! The people working there are also really friendly and nice. I made my first pilgrimage to Springfield back in the 1980's. Someone back then introduced us to the original and at the time the "only" Andy's in town. I had never experienced anything so tasty in my life. For years afterwards it is never more than an hour or two after we get to town before we hit up Andy's. And of course it has to be the "original" location on North Glenstone near Evangel University. The original Andy's Frozen Custard is the very best for a late night treat. Frozen custard has a bit of a tough row to hoe. Everybody knows what "ice cream" is--but as a name, frozen custard doesn't have quite the same snap to it. I can't believe I haven't written a review about this place; it's only as famous as cashew chicken! This is the summer spot for anyone in the know. Especially during "Street Rod Nationals." You can get your custard and sit, and watch some awesome car's roll by. My usual is the Jitter Bug; minus the Jitter "espresso" and add peanut butter cups. But lately I've been on the James Brownie kick. But everything is so tasty you don't have to worry about just one favorite. Because banana, and cream soda shakes are in my line up too. We stopped here after dinner for some dessert. I had the turtle sundae regular size which was pretty good. I loved the toasted pecans with chocolate drizzled on top. Also, there were some cherries on it too. I wished there was some seating inside but that's okay. Custard. So much better than regular ice cream, sherbet, or that gross fro-yo nonsense. Why, then, is it such a rarity? The flashing spinning lights at the original location urged me to find out more, which I quickly did. I'm so glad I found this place so we didn't get stuck at Braum's (I love Braum's, don't get me wrong, but we have those all over Texas). The smiley girl at the window made me happy we chose it. I had to make a snap decision so as not to hold up the drive through line, and made out with an eggnog shake ('tis the season!) that was thick yet still slurpable. I would've liked for them to have more flavors than just chocolate or vanilla. My favorite custard place in Texas has at least 20 different flavors, which is half the fun. Then again, I'm a purist and tend to look over the mix-ins and toppings. I like my creamy custard straight up! It was a snap decision between Andy's and Braum's. My wife made the choice. Braum's looked dirty and run down, Andy's was vibrant and clean. We chose well. I had the "Jackhammer", which is a concrete hollowed out and filled with fudge. It's wonderful! My wife had a concrete. I can't remember which one, but it was also wonderful. Without really know what I'm talking about, I'm going to stick my neck out and say that ice cream, by definition, IS frozen custard. The incredients are milk, cream, eggs & sugar... so..... I asked the server, who said it's different than soft serve in it's lower percentage of whipped in air. She gave me a sample. Guess what? It tastes like ice cream : ) I had a MARVELOUS turtle sunday.
