Like many native Houstonians, I have a long history with Andy's Home Cafe, and the recipes of the Morales family. Originally founded around 1977 and named after their youngest son at the time, Andy, the restaurant was taken over by the siblings in the 90s. And most recently they were allegedly forced out of their famous location on 11th St. That location was to be a French bakery that bowed out and the location is still empty and sometimes I joke that Andy's should move back in after negotiating a really good lease with the leasing company. But at any rate, they are now located on North Main in a lovely new venue. Back in my punk rock days, Andy's was the place we would go to hang out in the early hours after clubbing at the island downtown. The jukebox was always wonderful. The food? It was good, classic , historically significant, and we did have concerns about the cleanliness and hygiene front of the room and even back of the room. But their new place on North Main is lovely. It has beautiful paintings on the wall. And there are great T-shirts for purchase. And so today I came in for the number six David's combo and Carnegie Saleh (that's what spell check does when I say carne guisada) to take home. They preface their Carnegie Saleh with the word "famous" and that catches my attention immediately and I know that I will have to try it. We shall see how it stacks up to Sarah's Mexican restaurant in San Antonio's Carnegie Sada or the ones that I'm comfortable making on my own. Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Bill Withers playing on the sound system. Great salsas, the red one full of tomatoes and served hot. Classic Tex-Mex combo. Red tortilla for the enchilada. Great arroz y frijoles (big portions of them). As the taco and chalupa fell apart I just combo'ed the combo onto my plate. Empty plates, see photo. (I wish they would continue the dying Houston tradition of puffy and crispy tacos. That would be icing on the cake.) I am so damn happy here today. Everything is great. I used to be one of those people who shunned Andy's for hygiene issues. NO MORE. I'm leaving with a big smile on my face. read more

It's a solid place here. The food is not oversalted for Tex-Mex. If they use lard, which I think they do, it's not as heavy as other places. The food and salsa are also not spicy at all. My colombian enchiladas, cheese enchiladas with eggs on top, was a large portion. At $16, I thought it was high for the area. The restaurant is not that big but I came after 1pm on a Saturday so there were not that many customers. The restaurant shares a shopping strip parking lot so you may have issues finding a spot even when the restaurant is not busy. It makes me hesitant to check back for breakfast when I suspect everything is busier. read more

The service was great but the cheese enchiladas were not to be ordered in the future. Who uses velvetta cheese in and on their enchiladas. The sauce was nothing but tomato salsa. There was no spice or chile in the sauce. Going back to Sylvia's where they know how to make enchiladas read more

After seeing pics decided to try it for brunch! Small & quaint about 10 tables & a small counter area. Great customer service from the moment you walk in! The Queso was fantastic, was a bit disappointed in the eggs & Guisada. Not as tender as I would've liked and definitely lacking in the flavor department! Menudo was good but also lacking flavor. Way overpriced and they charge you 2.25 for a tablespoon of cheese. Charge for every refill on the drinks. Chip tasted like they were out of a bag and cold. read more

Let me start off with the food was great. The service was awful! I walked in looking for someone to greet us and escort us to our table but I received no such greeting. There was a lady behind the counter and another one standing at the jukebox looking for music to play. They both looked at us and said nothing so I had to initiate the conversation by asking if I just seat myself. A slight nod and "yeah," was their response. We sat at our table for like 5 mins and no one had come to greet us. I had to get up and grab our own menus. Finally a server came to take our order but it seemed like her attention was elsewhere because she kept looking away. Our food arrives and everything was so yummy. I ordered menudo but had to get up and ask for some cilantro at the counter. I was fine waiting for it at the counter but they told me that they can bring it to the table. I never received my cilantro. The menudo was the actual thing that I came here for and I couldn't even enjoy that. I had to ask for a to go plate because I couldn't take it anymore. Nothing about that place was welcoming but their food was legit. It's just a shame. If you're starving, then this is not the spot to go to. You'll be waiting forever just to get a menu. read more

I used to go to go the old location once a week or so, I was glad to hear that they reopened. First of all the prices have gone up by about 30%, so its not the tasty and affordable neighborhood place it once was. Its prices are now in line with pricing at the bigger Mexican restaurants, the ones where you can also get a margarita with your meal! Plus this location is tiny and just doesn't have the same "home" feeling or vibe as the old place and they could certainly fix that but have apparently chosen not to which is sad. Another problem is the parking, it is horrible, the parking lot is always full from the loan office next door and the Edger barber shop with a packed house full of kids getting an Edger cut. I would also be a little careful of that area at night, definitely pretty ghetto and right in front of the Metro Tram Line. Missed Andy's sooo much! So excited to hear of the reopening! Came from Woodlands/Spring area and did not disappoint! Parking was easy in and out. Friendly service. Famous Carne Guisada was so tender and yummy! And my personal FAVE are their cheese enchiladas which I feel are the best in the Greater Houston Area! And of course HOMEMADE FLOUR TORTILLAS! We will definitely be back!! Oh, and my Fiancée was in disbelief at how good "real" tex mex (non food chain) food was, with his to-go order I got! 1st time he'd ever had carne guisada! We've enjoyed the original location for many years so decided to give the new spot a try. For starters we will continue to support Andy's as there are a few items that we really enjoy, and we are all about supporting small businesses. I will admit we were disappointed in the size of the restaurant, the parking, the new tortilla chips and the watery red salsa. Hopefully some of the new downfalls will be corrected. read more

I was a customer of the original Andy's for decades. I visited their new place tonight longing for their good food. I'm so sorry to say that the food portion is much smaller as well the plates, the food was cold, and tasteless. No seasoning at all. The chips are from a bag now, tortillas are horrible, not the same and the salsa is watered down. At least the salsa was warm. Limited drink selection. Only one waitress for the whole place, and looked so stressed! The food quality and price are not worth another visit from me. I suggest they get a bigger place and serve the food hot at least. read more

So missed Andy's on 11th. So very happy we have Andy's back! 2121 N. Main St. Great location to eat at and also to stop by on way home from work (downtown) for food to go. The food is authentic Tex-Mex / authentic Mexican American food. Always so good. Truly the best menudo in town! The enchiladas are always amazing! Our families favorite place to eat. Get their dessert of the day too! The different cakes slices taste just like my momma used to make. Lastly, they have Big Red! Nothing like having Tex-Mex with a cold Big Red - a San Antonio staple! I can't believe people wrote ugly reviews the first week in a new place. The crowds have obviously been huge, new waitresses, need a little oil before it all runs perfectly, but the staff is smiling and warm and happy and the food tastes exactly the same as always. I went opening day (yep, it was a little crazy) and I'm headed back now. If you're really a loyal customer, don't let one bad experience on opening week make you want to never come back. This place is so small! It's a shame because they have a big following. We stopped by today Thursday around 3 pm thinking it would be a good time during the off hours. Well, wrong, the place was packed with people waiting on their food. The cashier came up to us to tell us to wait outside because the food service was running behind. No wonder we saw so many hungry faces. The parking is very tight with no where to park! Only one handicapped space. We just couldn't get over the fact that the place is very small and tables were too close to one another. We left and won't be back. read more
